,, your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. breaking news in pittsburg where two people have been shot. chopper 5 is live over highway 4 near railroad avenue. chp has closed down the westbound side of the freeway. and you can see that black sedan there out there. it's crashed. you can see a lot of the debris

littered around it and a number of chp vehicles. this was first reported a little over an hour ago. there is no estimate on when lanes will re-open. traffic is being diverted off loveridge road and no word on the condition of the victims but we know at least one was taken to the hospital. we have a crew on the way. we'll bring you any updates as they become available. new at noon, police say that a man went after his own mother with an axe and officers had to shoot. reporter matt bigler from kcbs radio is on the scene in san jose with the latest. >> reporter: this all happened at 7 a.m. here on lansing avenue. the scene is right behind us here. officers responded to a domestic disturbance. when they arrived on scene, they saw a fairly dramatic situation. there was a man chasing a woman out of the house. they went into the street and at some point he struck her with an axe. he was wielding either an axe or a maul, a large axe. she was struck in the head. the officers responded by opening fire on the man to stop

the attack. he was shot. and both the man and the woman have been taken to the hospital. we have just learned that they are in stable condition, both the man and the woman, who is his mother. they are in stable condition. we have heard from lieutenant tom sims with san jose police. he says officers had seconds to react to the situation. >> i'll tell you there's a big difference between responding to an event where you know somebody is chasing after somebody with an axe and having it unfold in front of you. so the few seconds that it took them to realize what was going on, it was over. >> i guess he's been having some problems, mental health problems, recently. i know he was at the mental hospital about a month ago. >> reporter: the update from san jose police is that both the 26-year-old man who has been taken to the hospital is in stable condition and his mother, who was struck on her body, is also in stable condition. this was san jose's third

officer-involved shooting of the year. from the scene in san jose, matt bigler for kpix 5. repairs are under way right now on a large sinkhole in san francisco. a family had to be rescued after their suv got stuck when a sewer main gave way under them. kpix 5's anne makovec on how long before the hole is fixed. >> reporter: there it is in the middle of mission street at new montgomery. traffic is now allowed to go around the hole but it's not going to be repaired until tomorrow night at the earliest. the hole is 12 feet by 5 feet wide and 9 feet deep. >> what's underneath is a collapsed sewer main. >> reporter: a sewer main dating back to 1875, made of bricks that broke open creating the sinkhole at around 5:30 last night leaving an suv sitting precariously on the edge, a family inside. >> everybody is freaking out of the. there's buses stopped. >> reporter: crews were able to put ropes around the vehicle and tow it away. nobody was injured.

but the hole remains. >> it's the size of a volkswagen bug. >> reporter: back to the old sewer line that broke underneath it. >> it's mortar and brick, old school. >> reporter: there are miles and miles of sewer lines just like it more than 100 years old under feet san francisco city streets. >> you know, it is a concern and that's why we need to keep investing in our aging infrastructure. >> reporter: san francisco is now trying to replace about 15 miles of sewer lines a year but has about 1,000 miles to go. in san francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. a major construction project starts in oakland today. it will change one route for the next two years. crews will rebuild the embarcadero bridge that spans the lake merritt channel. embarcadero between estuary park and fifth avenue will be closed. traffic will be detoured to the 7th street bridge until may of 2018. the new bridge will be wider and safer in an earthquake. improvements are coming for those who commute on the water. golden gate ferry is getting a $2.2 million federal grant. the money goes toward upgrading

family members say darosa had psychiatric problems. more violent thunderstorms could hit the central and eastern u.s. today this after tornadoes made a mess in western kentucky. jericka duncan shows us the widespread damage.
