has been shot and killed by san francisco police. they just started re-opening some of the roads here. this is in the bayview in san francisco. this woman was shot one time by one officer who only fired one shot. the confrontation taking place about 9:45 a.m. police were out looking for stolen cars at the time and they found one on elmira street where it dead ends under 280. officers tried to talk to her. they say she tried to drive off. at 100 feet away she hit a truck. officers approached the car and the police chief reports what happened next. >> we have one witness that says that there was a back and forth with the vehicle, with the officers moving about, at some point in this engagement, one officer a sergeant fired one shot striking the suspect. >> reporter: officers got her

out of the car. they performed cpr. but she died at san francisco general hospital. the chief says he is not yet interviewed the officers in this case to hear their side of the story. we also don't know yet if there were any weapons found in the week. that's going to be a big part of the investigation. and this is under investigation right now by the department of justice and the san francisco d.a.'s office. live in the bayview in san francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. developing news out of hayward, where someone was hit by a bart train this morning. chopper 5 shows crews walking around the stopped train between the hayward and south hayward stations. it happened about an hour and a half ago. the victim went to the hospital with unknown injuries. service was stopped between the two stations causing major delays on the fremont line. partial service is restored. more developing news. search teams have found wreckage after an egyptair jetliner crashed on the way

from paris to cairo with 66 people on board. tina kraus reports from london. >> reporter: family members rushed to the airport at paris and cairo after hearing egyptair flight 804 vanished from radar. the greece defense minister says it was flying at 37,000 feet on its way from paris to cairo when it suddenly dropped and spun sharply. search teams have reportedly found items floating in the mediterranean sea not far from the jet's last known location near the greek island of crete. investigators hope they can recover wreckage that will hold clues to determine what happened. >> if you analyze the situation properly, the possibility of having a different action or having a terror attack is higher than a technical error. >> reporter: the plane's black boxes will be found before they can reach conclusions. >> could it have been pilot issues or mechanical failure? could it have been a bomb?

all of these things will be revealed when we finally are able to find the aircraft itself. >> reporter: the last contact from the pilots came 10 minutes before the plane disappeared with 56 passengers and 10 crew. >> the greek controller radioed the flight crew to change frequencies and they never responded. and that was the red flag. that was what brought the attention of the authorities that this flight was not proceeding as planned. >> reporter: the fbi is assisting in the investigation and the u.s. has offered to send planes to help in the search. tina kraus, cbs news, london. >> this is the latest in a string of incidents raising concerns about egypt's aviation safety s back in march, a manmade it on a flight wearing what he claimed was an explosive vest. the 59-year-old demanded that the domestic plane headed to cairo be diverted to cyprus. investigators discovered that his motive was personal and not related to terrorism. he was arrested. no one was hurt. new at noon, a hiker and

his dog who went missing in placer county have been found alive! this is new video of cody michael and his german shepherd bower in placer county. they were camping near loch leven trail on monday but didn't return home as planned. dozens of volunteers aided rescue teams in helicopters in a massive search yesterday. officials say both are okay. the state senate approved a wide-ranging series of gun control measures today to tighten california gun laws. >> it deals with public safety and protects our children. >> gun ownership is a constitutional bedrock. we can't smash the second amendment and expect america to be as free and strong as it's always been. >> the measures included one that would require background checks for ammunition purchases. another mandating that people

get a state serial number before making a gun. another that requires reporting a lost or stolen gun within five days. it goes to the state assembly. a popular celebration in the bay area could be cut short. two brothers filed a lawsuit to stop next month's san francisco pride parade saying it's unsafe. they were injured in 2013 at the parade. the attorney says the violence has continued since then. >> our question for the court really is how many people need to get shot and how much of a nuisance does this event need before they shut it down? >> the organizers of the pride parade responded with this statement, quote, we will not be bullied by false claims and strongly believe the court will see this action for what it is. virtual reality is taking center staining at google's annual -- is taking center stage at google's annual technology conference. kiet do reports.

google has been in rapid prototyping mode cranking out about two apps or projects a week. some good some not so good. the idea is that there will be a home run in there somewhere. what's more, devices like this 16-camera setup will be more common place as google makes a push to democratize vr and bring it to the masses. >> reporter: and you can expect these new apps or phones to be out by the end of the year. in mountain view, kiet do, kpix 5. southwest airlines just announced new routes out of sillicon valley. starting november 6, the carrier will offer daily nonstop flights from mineta international airport to baltimore-washington international airport. also on that date, it will offer twice daily nonstop flights from san jose as to salt lake city. >> this is important for a lot of companies. it's also important for a lot of jobs here at home. having more of that's long haul flights fills our restaurants,

takes a look at safer's illustrious career. >> american losses -- >> reporter: morley safer covered the world for over a half century in a way that not only touched lives, it actually changed them. his reporting from vietnam helped shift the way america thought about the war. >> just as the medevac came in, the boy died. he was 17. >> reporter: in 1965, he showed u.s. marines burning down a village sending terrified civilians running from their homes. >> morley safer, cbs news, near the village of cam ni. >> reporter: it was a new way every covering war, realistic and bleak. safer himself was canadian, but he settled in new york after joining "60 minutes" in 1970. >> did you ever hold up anybody? >> no, sir. >> reporter: in 1983, his report on la nell jeter became one of the show's proudest moments. safer and his team uncovered new evidence showing jeter had been wrongly convicted of armed robbery in texas. the report led to jeter's

release from a life sentence. safer also had a flair for the lighter side. he traveled the world covering everything from the tango craze in finland to the british passion for gardening. he documented good food, fine wide, great cars. in one of "60 minutes'" most popular shows he interviewed the muppets. >> i thought "60 minutes" was a high class show. >> reporter: and he took on the art world twice. in the '90s he questioned the value of modern art. >> it's a white rectangle. >> right. >> reporter: then again in 2012. >> cute, clumsy and incomprehensible. >> reporter: but safer himself was an artist. >> room service -- >> reporter: he carried art supplies when he traveled and spent his sleepless hours painting in his many hotel rooms. over his many years with "60 minutes," he picked up dozens of awards in journalism. for a man who enjoyed telling stories, he always said there

temperatures are cooling significantly, it's a more seasonal day. 25-mile-per-hour winds west- northwest in san francisco. 22 sfo. 13 in throughout the tri- valley. also in vallejo. 15 berkeley. you get the feel for this. these winds will continue to peak 20 to 30 miles per hour during the evening commute and the overnight hours. these winds are all increasing because of an area of low pressure that's pressing up against. high pressure ridge causing a pressure gradient and that's why we have windy conditions. it's cooler with the air drifting onshore 20 degrees cooler inland. it will remain cool through the weekend as the low goes south and east. this is our futurecast. i find this so interesting. we become mostly cloudy overnight and watch your friday. hit-and-miss showers to the north and south. and then also during the evening hours to the east. and then here comes your saturday. if you have little league

learning to live a healthy lifestyle. and some are even pursuing olympic-sized drea. sharon chin shows us... it'e work of this ard winner. thousands of low income children are learning to live a healthy lifestyle and pursuing olympic sized dreams. sharon chin reports on this week's jefferson award winner. reporter: more than 1,000 kids aged 4 through 18 parade into uc-berkeley's edwards stadium with their track club. they take the athlete's oath and go for the gold. dr. mark alexander created this track meet in 2002. it's part of the youth movement program he founded for the "100 black men of the bay area." >> we designed this program using track and field as a hook to get young children involved in embracing healthy lifestyles. >> reporter: as an epidemiologist, dr. alexander saw many children at risk for

health problems because they weren't getting enough exercise. >> many of these kids had never done pushups before in their lives. >> reporter: so he developed the youth movement program to improve the health and fitness of low income bay area children. it offers mentoring and year round cool clinic and -- it offers mentoring and year round school clinics and strength training, good nutrition and character development. dr. alexander developed the track meet as a celebration. and he named the events the tommie smith youth track meet after his olympic hero. tommie smith gave the salute while receiving the gold medal for the 200-meter race in the 1968 olympics in mexico city. >> because he was an amazing athlete and a courageous person we decided to name this meet after him. >> reporter: smith has attended all 13 track meets in support of dr. alexander's work >> you hear that in the background? that's joy, love, being part of something. >> reporter: as a leader and mentor, dr. alexander helps kids like briona rivera get a running start in sports and school. >> he is like a grandpa to me. >> reporter: how?
