out. flames take over a home. neighbors rush to help but a 5-year-old boy doesn't make it out. >> betty yu is live with the investigation and frantic moments. >> neighbors on this street are just devastated that their efforts to save this child were not enough. it was simply too late. tonight vallejo police are here on the scene and crime tape now surrounds this house as investigators search for a cause. >> reporter: you could see heavy smoke billowing out of the back bedroom road and from the front of the house you could see flames. trapped inside was a 5-year-old boy. on the outside, his mother

desperate for help. >> the house is engulfed in flames. she's yelling for the neighbors and everybody to just get her son out, please just get my son out, he's in there. >> reporter: velma jones was next door and dropped everything to help. another neighbor shot this cell phone video of people trying to battle the flames even as firefighters arrived. >> the fire department was met by many neighbors trying to assist in getting the one victim out who was found in a back bedroom. >> reporter: by the time firefighters found the boy, he was dead. >> she was frantic. she was burned really, really bad. her face was just black. >> reporter: fire officials say the boy's mom went to the hospital with second and third degree burns and her teenaged son has minor burns. >> it's really traumatizing. it's very sad. very sad. and he was getting ready to start school. he said i'm going to be in

kindergarten, ms. v. >> reporter: ms. v says she called the boy little man. >> he was a very smart, respectful little boy. he would always say how is your son doing? and how are you doing today, ms. v? that's what he would say to me every day. >> the neighbors say this boy just turned 5 years old and as recently as last week she bought him a birthday present. tonight we understand the mother is still in very bad shape at the hospital. firefighters say the house behind me is a total loss. live in vallejo, betty yu, kpix 5. right now more than 100 firefighters are trying to contain a wildfire in monterey county. it's burned 3500 acres about 25 miles south of salinas and it's sending up thick smoke. the fire started about 3:30 this afternoon. no injuries have been reported and no homes threatened. firefighters are worried about transmission lines.

they say if those go down, it could mean a major power outage. people are posting photos of the fire on social media. this picture of the dark clouds and smoke. ruby boyd posted this picture of the wind blowing the fire eastward. right now the fire is about 20% contained. a santa clara county jail guard has injuries to his face and head after an altercation with an inmate. the sheriff's office says they were later released with minor injuries. now san francisco's acting police chief wants people to know he's ready to make changes. joe vazquez is live with the chief's latest message to community leaders. >> the new chief says it's time to start tearing down the walls between the police department and the community. he told community leaders in the western edition that he was going to be the first one to

begin moving bricks. >> reporter: three days after he was appointed san francisco's new acting police chief, tony chaplain went to church. third baptist church for a meeting of the naacp. >> those in charge and those on the floor need to do more to respect all lives. >> reporter: he faced questions from the community and promised he'd work hard for reform. >> there's a lot of officers out there wanting to do the good work. we're talking about the small minority out there doing things they have no business doing. that's what we're going to isolate and identify. those are the ones we're going to send with commission with recommendation they be separated from the police department. >> reporter: mayor ed lee appointed him thursday to the post of acting chief after another officer involved shooting. an officer shot an unarmed 29-year-old african american woman after she was driving aggressively in a car. there's resolve that a new regime could pick up where suhr pick off. chaplain says he can't elaborate

on reforms that are in the works. >> we're exploring a lot of alternatives and we've got some things working on. i'm not at liberty to speak about it right now but we are looking at alternatives to our officer involved shootings or o.i.s.s to make sure the public understands it's clear, transparent, and they don't think anything is being covered up. >> toney chaplain is the acting chief while city leaders are conducting a nationwide search for the next full-time chief. he said he's not sure if he wants to put his hat in the ring for the full-time yard. but some of the community lead ers we spoke to today agreed. the summit is being hosted by the public defender, who's

been highly critical of the department saying it's out of control. wednesday's event will include a panel discussion on whether san francisco police should be equipped with tasers. stolen guns in the hands of criminals. tonight police are investigating a smash and grab heist at a gun store. it happened at imbert and smithers gun store in san carlos. the suspects raided the inventory. owner of nearby shops say they're trying to secure their businesses as best they can. >> if somebody would have the gall to do that, drive a vehicle in to the glass window, that's a little nerve-wracking. >> all you can do is protect yourself the best you can. >> investigators have not said how many weapons were stolen. a popular san jose bakery goes up in flames. the fire broke out around 3:00 this morning at dick's bakery. it started somewhere in the back of the building. crews kept the flames from spreading to nearby businesses but smoke and water damage will

likely put the bakery out of commission for days if not weeks. the owner is vowing to rebuild. >> it's been a blessing. i love this place. our employees are like family. our family works here also. all of our children have worked in the bakery. >> the bakery is known for its burnt almond cake. and dick's bakery has been at the same location since the shopping center first opened in 1957. to the race for the white house now. bernie sanders took his campaign to southern california and held a rally today in vista. that's in san diego county. sanders continues to concentrate on our state ahead of the upcoming primary on june 7th. at the same time sanders supporters hope to get a voter boost by suing to extend the registration deadline. tomorrow is the last day to register or change your party affiliation. but plaintiffs want to push that back to primary election day, june 7th. they say some california election officials are not making it clear to unaffiliated

voters that they can vote in the democratic primary. in other states sanders has gotten a boost from those voters. new polls show hillary clinton and donald trump in a statistical tie in their potential general election battle. >> reporter: as hillary clinton and donald trump prepare for a likely match-up in the general election, a new cbs news poll shows them in tight races in two key battleground states. clinton and trump are virtually tied in florida with clinton just one point ahead. in ohio the democratic frontrunner leaves the presumptive gop nominee by five points. 44% to 49%. >> i'm going to be the nominee. i think there will then be the obvious need for us to unify the party. >> i think secretary clinton is jumping the gun a little bit here. >> reporter: bernie sanders is also tied with trump in florida and in ohio he's beating trump by 9 points, helped by young voters and independents.

the polls also show both parties are unifying behind their likely nominee, helped by a sizable percentage of voters who are backing trump and clinton because they're against the other side. >> i will be running against donald trump in the fall and i do not want americans and good thinking republicans as well as democrats and independents to start to believe that this is a normal candidacy. >> reporter: on fox the billionaire businessman warned sanders' criticism of clinton has been tame compared to what he's ready to unleash. >> she shouldn't be allowed to run for president. she has bad judgment. she's a weak person. >> hillary clinton will be holding events in san jose on wednesday and thursday as her campaign swings back through california. former president bill clinton is holding rallies in southern california as we head toward the june 7th primary. tonight a police officer in massachusetts is dead and so is the man who shot him. officer ronald tarentino was

killed after making a traffic stop early this morning. investigators found his patrol car with the door still open. later police and state troopers tracked down the gunman and killed him in an exchange of gunfire. he's identified as 35-year-old george zambrano. flight 804 crashed thursday in the mediterranean sea. they've pinpointed the location of the flight recorders in the mediterranean sea. >> reporter: recovery teams were scouring the mediterranean sea again sunday for wreckage from egypt air flight 804. >> we've been recovering wreckage. we've been recovering human remains. and other parts of the plane and it's now in the hands of our army operation. >> reporter: the u.s., britain, and france have sent military ships and planes to assist in the search.

180 miles north of the egyptian port city of alexandria. the u.s. navy says its t3 surveillance aircraft has located 100 pieces of debris from the doomed airliner. a u.s. intelligence source tells cbs news that the black box data recorders were located by their pings. >> we haven't recovered them yet. >> search teams are narrowing in on a 40-mile radius. egyptian officials are using a submarine capable of reaching depths up to 10,000 feet. in cairo hundreds of family and friends gathered for a memorial who remember an air stewardess that died. the cause of the crash remains a mystery. while terrorism is the leading theory, egyptian officials said the investigation will take time. >> egypt air says recovering and identifying the bodies could take weeks. president obama is looking to boost commercial and security ties in asia. he's on a week-long trip. first stop, vietnam, where the country's president welcomed him

in a ceremony. president obama is trying to pass a trans-pacific trade agreement among 12 countries. it's currently stalled in congress and facing opposition from the presidential candidates. later this week president obama will head to japan for a g7 summit meeting. in the san bernardino mountains 20 people were sent to the hospital after a church bus overturned. two are critically injured and you can see here the bus was on its side. blocking the mountain road, about 60 miles east of los angeles. chp says it sideswiped the mountain wall, rear ended a car, then overturned. two people had to be airlifted out. 22 others were taken to nearby hospitals. the cause of the crash being investigated. a scary morning for hikers in burlingame. a coyote cornered them. the hikers say the coyote crept up on them and their dogs. police were called in to scare the animal away. no one was hurt. police are warning hikers to be

on alert and restrain any small animals they take with them. they suggest scaerg coyotes away with loud noises and bright lights. tourists aren't letting a chain linked fence keep them from getting shots of san francisco's iconic homes known as the painted ladies. this video shows visitors entering and exiting through a hole in the fence at alamo square park. the area is closed for renovation. tonight fans are saying what happened to the warriors? golden state suffered a stunning loss in game 3 of the western conference finals. the thunder thrashed the warriors 133-105 in oklahoma city. the warriors are now down two games to one. head coach steve kerr says his championship winning team was in a similar position against memphis and cleveland last year. >> both times got blown out in game 3, and we responded well. so we have that memory and i'm confident that we're going to come out and play a really good

game in game 4. we'll see what happens. >> just a bad flow out there. we couldn't stop it. that was basically it. 6 minutes in the 2nd quarter decided the game. >> we will of course have more highlights coming up at 11:30 on game day with dennis o'donnell. a beloved san jose bowling alley is closing its doors for good tonight. the owner of cambrian bowl says her rent has gone up by $10,000 and she can't afford to keep operating. the bowling alley has been in the same spot for more than half a century and people we talked to are sad to see it go. >> going to miss this place so much. it's so sad to see it all go away. >> cambrian bowl will close at midnight. hundreds of people came together for a pride celebration in concord today.

about 300 people were at the plaza. they enjoyed live music, dancing, a food truck and beer garden. local businesses and agencies operated booths. people say one reason for this event is there's nothing like it in the castro district of the suburbs. >> we live far apart. it's really difficult to get to know each other. so this is the day where hopefully we reduce isolation and increase the sense of community. >> reporter: the rainbow community center has been organizing the celebration every year since 2008. the center provides support for lgbt people from across contra costa county. scientists are seeing more whales off the coast from years passed. crews teamed up for an expedition. for nine days they roamed the waters without disturbing wildlife. >> whales are here and they're feeding. that's a good sign that the

ocean is really productive. we're monitoring these things to determine what we may be seeing as a result of climate change and what may be a result of natural variability in the ocean. >> it's not clear why there are more whales this year. the results of another expedition coming up in july might paint a clearer picture. not many people say they can go in to work with the specific surface of saving the world. while their work may sound like the plot of a disaster movie, wilson walker shows us the threat and science are both very real. >> reporter: it is truly the stuff of hollywood. morgan freeman is the president. tayla makes good with her estranged father, and all of humanity is endangered by a threat from the heavens. here at lawrence livermore national laboratory, scientists

are working to prevent that very disaster. >> no one has really looked at meteorites in this way before. >> reporter: to save mankind from a doomsday collision, brooks is working with these relatively small meteorites. rock that formed at the dawn of our solar system drifted through space for billions of year then fell to earth. >> came a long way to get here and we're pretty lucky to get to use them. >> reporter: using them means destroying them. because the team is considering two possible ways of deflecting a killer asteroid. >> to either use a kinetic factor. >> reporter: basically that's a space craft that would ram the asteroid and push it off course. option 2 is a bit messier. >> standoff nuclear explosion. >> reporter: yes, a nuclear device detonated at just the right distance. >> just the uppermost layers of the surface are heated to high temperatures and blow off in a vapor and the rest of the asteroid recoils in the other

direction. >> reporter: you don't go setting off nuclear devices near asteroids without knowing they'll respond. that's where this stuff comes in. these lasers are powerful enough to create a high temperature plasma and annihilate the rock. >> results from this will feed directly in to the giant clusters of computers here at livermore to inform how an asteroid would actually respond to either a standoff nuclear explosion or kinetic factor. >> we do have more elegant options. the gravity traction, which uses a piece of it to pull it in to proper orbit. those take several years of planning then execution. if time is short, going nuclear might be our best option in what would be a pretty grim situation. >> we want to be prepared in the event there's an emergency. we need to act quickly and

advise the decision makers to the best of our ability based on high quality science. >> reporter: wilson walker, kpix 5. >> those samples come from different meteorites that fell in various places around the earth. they were donated specifically for this research. at 11:00 tonight clear skies in santa rosa, napa, concord, livermore, hayward, moffat field. that's good news because mars is up there at opposition tonight, meaning it's in an essentially straight line between the earth, sun, and mars. it will be even closer next weekend when mars hits closest approach, closest than it's been in 10 years. hard to miss that bright red star now rising in the eastern sky, unmistakably mars just as bright as jupiter tonight. come out and have a look. if you don't have clear skies tonight, no problem. it will be a great sight all week this week. tomorrow we'll have clouds. chance of showers in the north

bay. from the perspective of oakland, looking across san francisco, a day much like today. clouds, some sun. and the prospect for showers later in the day. we'll run the futurecast from a different perspective right on top of the bay area. watch what happens in the north bay. there's sunrise. right about here, midday tomorrow we have a few showers develop in the north bay then dry up. there's the potential for a little bit of wet up north. for the rest of the bay area, variably cloudy and sunny day. slight chance of an afternoon shower tomorrow. late in the week we'll begin to warm. but not abundant sunshine. like today we'll get a peek at it. tahoe or yosemite. sierra, rain tomorrow. mostly cloudy skies along the north coast. overnight lows, upper 40s, low 50s. sun up tomorrow at 6 minutes before 6 a.m. we'll continue cool for the next three days. a little bit below average as we head in to the latter part of may. 63 in the city tomorrow.

oakland, 65 degrees. south bay, some sun and some clouds. temperatures upper 60s, low 70s. pretty much the same in the east bay with a slightly elevated chance of a few showers tomorrow afternoon. in the north bay, better chances with temperatures in the mid 60s. and finally, not a bad bet for ukiah, lakeport, clear lake. wednesday and thursday we'll slowly begin to warm it up until finally we creep back in to the mid 70s inland. warmer than it has been lately in what's been so far a fairly cool may. don't forget about mars. great chance to show your kids real stuff happening in the solar system. chp officers are calling it the slowest pursuit ever. they followed baby geese off interstate 80 in berkeley. it happened this morning near ashby avenue. the geese backed up traffic as officers slowly but surely guided them back to safety. still ahead, a bay area

cowboys and cowgirls lassoed cattle in castro valley. it was all part the area looked more like the wild west as cowboys and cowgirls lassoed. >> the annual event has been going on for nearly a century now. it's meant to showcase the last remnants of the wild west. the rodeo kicks off with a parade and luncheon served by cowboys. great event by all. we'll be right back.
