your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. now at noon, a north bay high school closed while police search for three murder suspects. this after two students were shot and stabbed in novato last night. good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. one of those students is dead and the other is in the

hospital. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us live from the school, where a press conference just wrapped up. anne. >> reporter: this is a small community. so a lot of questions about these two students shot and stabbed. we don't know their identities, nor the identities of the attackers. >> this is an incredibly tough time for our community and i know novato will pull together. >> reporter: at about 5:30 last night, a teenager called 911 to report he had been shot and stabbed near the end of fairway drive. as he was rushed to the hospital, officers combed the open space nearby and found a second teenager shot dead. the only description of the suspects, three hispanic men. neighbors say they saw a white sedan speed from the scene. >> a lot of people are providing us information. we are able to put these pieces together, which is painting a better complete portrait of what took place. >> reporter: officers are

combing the trails for more evidence. a spokesman says he doesn't know the attackers' motive but he will say -- >> there's no further threat to the community at this point. >> reporter: novato high school remains closed today. >> the length that we know about with the students were right here at novato high school, so we have some concerns about what might happen with that. >> we can expect more news on this case this afternoon according to the sheriff's department that might include information on arrests. live in novato, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> new at noon, the chp revealing for the first time it's made five arrests in the east bay shootings. that's all they are saying. kpix 5's da lin says the shootings prompted an emergency meeting this morning by fire mayors -- by five mayors whose cities have been impacted. >> reporter: five mayors are asking governor brown for money to stop freeway shootings on i- 80. they signed it today. they want to get it to the desk today if possible.

the mayors would like to install cameras at freeway on- and off-ramps stretching from el cerrito to hercules. there have been close to 30 freeway shootings since late last year many of those on 80, some on 4. now, there are existing cameras on parts of i- 80. some mayors believe the on- and off-ramp cameras would capture license plates and help police track down the shooters. >> i would like to see this done as soon as possible. i firmly believe that the state has the ability to enhance their freeway cameras to get reporting. that's the first step. we have to tell the public more importantly the gangsters that, hey, what's going to happen on the freeway is going to get recorded. >> reporter: police believe many of the recent shootings are targeted and gang-related. but innocent people have been hurt in some of these shootings. the mayors say they have to do something to make people feel safe driving on the local freeways. hercules mayor dan romero will

hand deliver this letter to the governor. i'm da lin, kpix 5. oakland police are asking the public to help them solve a murder. it's been more than six weeks since brian bowl was found dead walking to his home on richmond boulevard. the 30-year-old data scientist was shot in the head and now crimestoppers is offering a $10,000 reward and the fbi is offering an additional $20,000 for information leading to an arrest. presidential candidate donald trump has just reached the threshold of delegates needed to clinch the republican nomination. it takes 1,237 delegates to win the nomination. trump has reached 1,238. today trump poked fun at democratic front-runner hillary clinton for not being able to close the deal. right now, clinton is in san jose for a campaign rally as recent polls show her lead in california over bernie sanders shrinking. kpix 5's kiet do is live in downtown san jose and had a

campaign signs negatively affected the campaigns of local city council candidates violated the trust of our community and negatively impacted the reputation of santa teresa high school. the principal says he doesn't believe it was campaign sabotage, just a senior prank. a mission abort aboard the international space station. astronauts have been trying to release air into an experimental inflatable room. after two hours of trying, the orbiting bounce house had expanded only a few inches. mission control told the crew to stand down and they will try again tomorrow. after years of heartbreak the san jose sharks are finally celebrating a trip to the stanley cup finals. the san jose sharks are headed to the finals! they earned a spot in the finals for the first time in its 25-year history. they beat the blues 5-2 to win the western conference

in testimony before congres the head of the t- s-a says- ime your summer travel plans may start with a frustrating wait at the airport. in testimony before congress the tsa head says don't expect relief anytime soon. mark albert explains why this is happening. >> reporter: airport managers told congress this morning that lines at security checkpoints are long. and the problem is only getting worse. >> passenger wait times are consistently 60 minutes or more. airline passengers have reported wait times as high as 120 minutes with thousands of passengers missing their flights. >> reporter: many americans say they are planning to skip those long lines this weekend. a new poll shows more than 20% of people planning to fly before labor day have changed or canceled their plans because of concerns about long lines at airports. the problem stems from a frustrating mix of more people choosing to fly combined with fewer people to screen them at these checkpoints. for the first five months of

this year, the tsa has screened 449 million travelers. that's up 12% or 57 million passengers compared to last year. with 5800 fewer tsa screeners than 2011. >> it appears tsa did not adjust the staffing model after screening protocols were changed. >> reporter: kerry with american airlines says in addition to angry customers the long lines are causing carriers to lose money. we're committing millions of dollars for things so tsa can focus solely on screening customers. >> reporter: airlines recommend passengers show up two hours before leaving to get through security. mark albert, cbs news, arlington, virginia. new information about security breaches at sfo. one year after the "associated press" reported it, it was the worst in the nation, officials there insist that they have had no more perimeter breaches but in march 2015 the ap reported that a woman got on the tarmac

>> reporter: once a month , steve holmes pulls on his waders and his ball cap and heads to los gatos creek in search of trash. >> what we had was pretty much a dead river. >> reporter: semi-retired, the fisherman-turned- environmentalist was inspired three years ago when he discovered a chinook salmon in los gatos creek struggling to make it upstream to spawn. >> trying to go over a cement barrier unsuccessfully. it tugged at my heart. >> reporter: it inspired him to create the nonprofit "south bay clean creek coalition" because what he called a dead river turned out to be a manmade problem. >> we had probably eight major encampments along los gatos creek. we had 225 people that were living in the close proximity to the waterway. >> reporter: and with them, trash, tons of it. >> we'll need more bags. >> reporter: the coalition relies on volunteers like carol and george szymkiewicz. >> the fishing are coming back. the beavers are coming back.

the whole eco-cycle is coming alive again. >> reporter: yes, beavers. this night vision video shows one at work along the creek two years ago. >> the fruits of the work, you can see in the creek right here. it's nice clean, clear water going into the bay. look at you, man, awesome. >> reporter: there are now more than 500 active volunteers working with steve, expanding from los gatos creek to include clean-up of the guadalupe river that runs through downtown san jose. and the trash collected has become a visual message. they make artwork from batteries, syringes, even the shopping carts that become fish. >> we have moved a waterway from a complete mess to something that's starting to look like it's healing. >> reporter: so for helping restore the natural habitat and beauty of creeks and rivers in the south bay, this week's jefferson award in the bay area goes to steve holmes. allen martin, kpix 5.
