that's what we got to remember. >> for washington dc to the bay area, thousands are spending the memorial day honoring veterans and those who have served and fallen. i'm michelle griego. >> dozens are gathered to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. kith is there live with a look at the service that's underway. kit. >>reporter: it's going on right now as we speak, and the mother's jest received a reef. the mothers lost either a son or daughter who serves in the military. we're expecting 5,000 people and they think that many people are here right now. today's meant to celebrate the veterans still with us, remember those who are not, the mood here is somber, but proud >> what so proudly we

held >> the united veteran -- veterans buried here back to the civil war. they said it was heartfelt to -- especially the younger generation of citizens. >> events like this educate those who may not have known this or think about what has been given by people who worked their age one time and were in service. >> a lot of people say young people don't get it. that they're ungrateful. >> they can say that. some kids are that way, but i feel like those like me, as an individual, it's important to support -- they served for you. >> [indiscernible]. he was only 27. so -- it was a good life, a sweet

life and he loved every minute in the service. >> i lost so many people that i feel like i owe this to them. >> and that was walter davis who did two tour in vietnam and one in korea. we thank him and the veterans to the service to our countries and the united veteran's council ask those who were lucky enough to have a veteran in their life to have them tell us about their service as painful as it might be. they say it helps them remind us why they're special, and why we're so lucky to have them in our lives. live in san jose, kit pit, kpix. the memorial day ceremony in san francisco was marked by a 21-gun salute, a grand march and a special visitor. presidential candidate sanders showed up. he toured the event.

it's the largest bay area memorial day tribute to veterans and service men and women. >> the fire department paid tribute to our vets this morning. they hosted a pancake breakfast. let's say they're proud to serve and in some cases joined the military and it's a life changer. >> military [indiscernible]. probably always in trouble, but not that deep. >> all the donations from the pancake breakfast will go to local vfw. president obama marked his final memorial day as commander and chief laying the reef at the unknown soldier and highlighted the importance of remembering. >> the americans who rest here and their families, the best of us, those from whom we

there's a couple of big events in san jose. the fap center will be open for a viewing party. ticket was $5 and the money goes to charity. a rally taking place at plaza cedar chavez. here's a look at the schedule for the first four games. games 1 and 2 in pittsburgh. today and wednesday, games 3 and 4 will be in down downtown san jose saturday and monday. in two hours, presidential candidate sanders will campaign in oakland. they'll, he'll host two different events. first -- a rally at franklin plaza. tomorrow, sanders stopped in emeriville, santa cruz and monterey. wednesday, he's expected to be in palos -- clinton will hold several events throughout the state before the primary. no details on where she'll be stopping has been

no swimming today at corona del mar beach. beaches were shut down as crews search for a shark. a woman had large bite marks on her torso. a rescue boat was able to reach her in time in -- >> i go to the life guard and say what's going on. he says there's blood in the water. >> the woman does have serious injuries, but expected to survive. more than 1,000 passengers trapped in line when an internet server crashed on sunday evening. it happened around 4:00 p.m. on sunday. and the air brought down computers in terminal 7 of jfk. boarding passes had to

after rains unleashed devastating flooding. >> those who live across the street from me, their whole front yard is underwater. >> those in texas have given up the hope of rescuing a 10-year-old boy swept away in the process river. >> we have the family here, and they need closure and we haven't been able to give it to them. >> there was forced evacuations in texas. >> i have lived in spring creek for 50 year and this is the highest i have seen the creek. >> the cbs station was struck by lightning and temporary off the air sunday afternoon. wichita county, firefighter was looking for the body of an 11-year-old boy who fell into a jip son river. you can see how close the rivers are getting into this texas home. the rivers in southeast texas prompted the evacuation of two prisons.

the river is expected to reach over 53 feet later this week, which is the highest recorded here. manuel, cbs news, rosenburg, texas. severe thunderstorms are also expected to hit the central plains and the mid-atlantic and they're bracing for tropical storm bonnie. it's moving up the east coast. let's get our forecast. a lot of people headed outside for memorial day. >> i was out there, outside, outside our studio in san francisco and it was feeling down road bombe. the skies are blue this afternoon. a few, thin clouds. let's take a look at that again one more time. we wanted to jump ahead to the forecast. temperatures, wow, 77 degrees. 76 to the north and santa rosa to the east, 81 degrees and livermore, our weather watcher is in brentwood and concord reporting temperatures in the low and mid-80s. here's what you need to know on this memorial day.

cool on the coast. and 50s and 60s at this hour. warm and hot again in our inland air. steady temperatures all week, and we begin to spike by the end of the week, and every forecast for the weekend -- our computer models suggests we're going to return to a wet model, but another model suggests triple digits. you can clearly see the clouds are still tied to the coast around san mateo. those clouds -- a bit of a wind because of the departure that's low. so we'll see southwest -- currently, going up to 80. around the beaches, 65 degrees in monterey bay. capitola topping off at 70. grab your sun block. 60 degrees is the coolest. 91 in fairfield.
