throwing his supportings behind hillary clinton. good afternoon, it's tuesday, may 31. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. senator bernie sanders isn't accepting defeat in the primary race. today he is on the campaign trail stopping in the delegate- rich golden state. jackie ward is live in emeryville. >> reporter: bernie sanders wants to spend as much time in california as he possibly can leading into our primary next week. national nurses united filled a conference room at the hyatt in emeryville. today senator sanders focused on healthcare and how in his opinion, america is doing it wrong. he said we can't be satisfied with the affordable care act. he called american healthcare dysfunctional pointing to $50 billion in profits in the drug companies last year. >> the function of healthcare in a civilized society is to provide quality care to all

people in a cost-effective way, not to make billions of dollars in profits for the drug companies. >> we need a democratic process for people who actually vote their hopes and not their fears. >> reporter: the group says their views align with his especially with income inequality and guaranteed healthcare. unfortunately, sanders didn't take any questions from the media like we were anticipating. he had to head down to santa cruz immediately. in emeryville, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> this event was closed to the public. what about the ones planned for this afternoon? >> reporter: so in santa cruz, that's the next event that's on sanders' agenda. that's a rally. so the public is invited to that one and actually the crowds are already causing some traffic delays. if you drive in that area, be aware of the kaiser arena area because there will be some road closures. back to you. >> thank you.

democratic front-runner hillary clinton is due back in california starting thursday to make several stops before this state's primary. her campaign says she will be back in the bay area but so far there are no specifics. this comes as governor brown posted an open letter on his website to democrats and independent in california. brown said while he is impressed with the vermont senator, democrats should vote for clinton. california's primary is on june 7. 475 democratic delegates are up for grabs. a reminder for you today is the last day for californians to apply by mail for mail-in ballots to vote in the june 7 primary. if you don't make today's deadline, you can apply at your county registrar's office in person or you can call the county registrar's office for more information. on the republican side, after months of lingering questions, donald trump is addressing the controversy surrounding his donations to veterans groups. >> the money has all been sent. i wanted to keep it private

because i don't think it's anyone's business. >> he raised millions for veterans at a rally in january. details have been vague about how much was raised and who got it. the presumptive republican presidential nominee complained that the media is spinning his good deed into something negative. outside trump tower a veterans group with ties to the democratic party accused trump of using veterans for publicity. right now in palo alto, crews are responding to a hazardous materials incident. roads are blocked off. one person is taken to the hospital and 1 others are being evaluated after -- 14 others are being evaluated after being exposed to an unknown substance. check out cbssf.com for more. police are changing tactics in the search for pearl pinson. her friends and family remain hopeful despite parts of the search being suspended. investigators are looking for clues on social media.

they lost a big lead when santa barbara sheriff's deputies fatally shot alleged kidnapper fernando castro. police have not found a trace of the teen since she went missing last wednesday. pinson was abducted in vallejo on the way to a school bus stop. police say she is injured based on witness evidence. a fire gutted two units at 5 a.m. on arnold drive. contra costa fire says it caused $500,000 in damages. 7 unions had heavy damage in martinez. the fire was under control around 5:45 a.m. kpix 5 is told that one person was injured but is expected to be okay. today we are getting our first look at san francisco's budget. san francisco mayor ed lee just unveiled his plan for the coming fiscal year. >> it invests in answers to homelessness and housing. it invests in police reforms and public safety. and it invests in quality of

life in our neighborhoods and the well-being of our people. >> mayor lee said that homelessness was a top priority. he announced the creation of a new department dedicated to ending homelessness in the city. this department will get 8,000 people off the streets over the next four years. in just a few hours, san francisco acting police chief toney chaplin is expected at a community meeting as he deals with controversy surrounding his department. today's gathering comes after recent shootings of suspects and officer text messaging scandal and resignation of police chief greg suhr. it will be at the playland bar on polk street at 5:30 p.m. oakland city council's community and economic development committee plans to tackle the rising rent problem today after a sobering report from the national low-income housing coalition was released. according to hud people shouldn't pay more than 30% of income on rent but the new report shows that renters in oakland have to earn over $40 an hour to be able to rent a

two-bedroom apartment. today the committee is looking into affordable housing solutions. a first time home buyer's program is under consideration. energy leaders from the world's largest economies are in san francisco today to talk about clean energy. the meeting is piggybacking off the paris talks where 195 countries made a packet to limit global warming. leaders plan to talk with clean tech entrepreneurs from sillicon valley about new products that can elevate clean energy plans. meetings are planned throughout the week. the vallejo city council is considering moving forward with a plan to bring an electric car company to mare island. a company out of los angeles faraday future wants to build a plant on the former naval base in the north bay including an experience center where customers can learn about the company's products and technology. it chose mare island because of its proximity to sillicon valley. the company introduced itself

disappeared after taking off from catalina island this a developing story out of avalon. authorities have searching for a plane disappeared after taking off from catalina island this weekend. two people were on the single- engine plane. a student pilot and flight instructor. the cessna was reported missing when it didn't arrive in van nuys as planned. no one has been able to reach the pilot or instructor. both have experience in flying. >> it's too much real estate to

cover. the coast guard and faa are searching. it's too much for to us cover alone. the family is worried. many people that love him and many people adore him. >> the coast guard along with three helicopters chartered by the pilot's family are searching for the missing plane. a new report from the u.n. says sexual transmission of the zika virus is more common than first thought. the world health organization updated its advice for women trying to get pregnant. they now suggest couples wait eight weeks before trying to conceive if they have been exposed to zika. it takes about that long for the virus to clear. the previous w.h.o. guidelines recommended waiting only four weeks. part of texas is under way and the governor declared a state of emergency because of flooding. in fort bend, texas, the brazos river is overflowing after torrential rainstorms over the weekend. roads are closed and the mandatory curfew is in effect. officials are warning anyone traveling to fort bend to stay away from the edge of the

well, today's tip of the day is going to be is navel oranges. they are winding down. the season started months ago and around june they start to have every be dry inside in the market. so selection and storage is very important or otherwise, they're not going to be good. you select them right, they will still be sweet and juicy and loaded with flavor along with nutritional value. so here's your tip. when you buy them, make sure the skin is shiny all the way around, very important. they have to be heavy. and they cannot feel spongy. they have to have a slight give to them. but the weight is important. also what's important this time of year when you bring them
