after the home goes up in flames. i'm kenny choi. michelle griego is off. we are getting the first look at the suspect identified as gerald villabay area i don't. kiet do reports. >> reporter: a man from san jose has a long criminal history. crews on scene are waiting for the ashes of this burned-out home to cool down before they go and recover his body. firefighters found his body in a closet. somewhere within the charred walls of this burned-out home is the body of one of the most violent suspects fremont has seen in recent memory. >> to know we had a criminal in our city carrying a loaded firearm and ready to immediately start shooting at officers is just not acceptable. >> reporter: the cause of death is unclear. last night investigators tracked the suspect down to the home on roberts after.

they fired tear gas in the home when he refused to surrender. tear gas may have started the fire. it smoldered all night on the porch. it was too dangerous for firefighters to spray water at a distance. by sunrise the house burst into flames in a flashover. >> it's unlikely survivable. >> reporter: police made the call to put the flames out. when they went inside they found the suspect but it's not clear if they found a firearm nearby. >> he was given many opportunities to come out during that negotiation. he refused to do so. >> reporter: this ended with a car stop in fremont yesterday afternoon the suspect rammed the officer's patrol car and got into a battle. this video was shot as the officer went to the hospital in critical condition, the suspect

looked injured. >> i'm lucky that that guy didn't come into the restaurant shooting. >> reporter: ten minutes later he shot another police officer, that officer in stable condition. both officers are in regional medical center in san jose where a steady stream of officers has been showing up. the suspect died in the fire. do you think he got what he deserved? >> i don't know. who am i to judge? >> reporter: that officer who was in critical condition described as a hard working officer, a really nice guy brand-new to the force. buy on the department now for just about a -- been on the department now for just a year. the next 48 hours are critical for that officer. kiet do, kpix 5. we have team coverage today. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is at the trauma center in san jose where the injured officers are being treated. >> reporter: as kiet said they are getting a lot of visits right now from their coofficers

with the fremont police department. there are several fremont police department cars here in the hospital's parking lot. one was critically injured. that's the person who initially tried to make the traffic stop. the other officer, a detective, he was shot apparently as he was trying to locate that suspect about 10 minutes later. we got an update on their conditions from a police spokesman earlier this morning. >> i don't have a estimated time for when they will be released. even the veteran officer who sustained two gunshot wounds he has internal injuries so he could be, you know, out for some period of time. he still has progress to make. while he is stable, the injuries are still very serious. >> reporter: that officer she

is referring to is a 10-year veteran of the fremont police department. i'm sure we could use all the prayers you could send to the regional medical center of san jose for these officers this afternoon. live in san jose, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> thank you. now to another shooting in southern california. details on the deadly ucla shooting yesterday. we now know that the gunman 38- year-old killed the professor. a gunman left a kill list at his minnesota home that included the names of william klug, who he killed, another ucla professor and a minnesota woman who police found shot dead in her home. officials say that the other ucla professor on the list is okay. >> i support their belief he went to kill two faculty from ucla. he only located one. the second faculty member was

off campus according to the information that we have. >> police say that mainak sarkar was heavily armed with two semi-automatic pistols and lots of ammo. investigators are looking for his car for further insight into the deadly campus shooting yesterday. the family of the oakland muralist who was murdered last year is filing a federal claim against immigration and customs enforcement. the claim alleges that there is an agency-wide problem in which i.c.e. agents continue to have unsecured firearms stolen. last september 27-year-old antonio ramos was shot and killed while painting a mural. the gun used was stolen from the immigration agency. last week the family of kate steinle a woman killed on a san francisco pier last year announced a wrongful death lawsuit against local and federal agencies including i.c.e. investigators say that the gun used in her murder was stolen from a federal agent's car. happening now, the former stanford swimmer convicted of sexual abuse is in a palo alto courtroom awaiting his

sentence. last month, 20-year-old brock turner was found guilty on three felony charges stemming from the sexual assault of an unconscious woman outside a frat party. turner faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. now to campaign 2016. presumptive republican nominee donald trump set to speak at the san jose convention center tonight at 7:00. right now, streets around the center are starting to close down. the shutdowns include parts of market street, south, first street and almaden boulevard. 12,000 people are expected to attend tonight including protestors. kpix 5 reporter len ramirez on the concerns over security today. len. >> reporter: kenny, people are already starting to line up here in downtown san jose for this large trump rally. supporters have been here for hours hoping to get an early place in like. due to the problems in previously rallies, there's been a number of people on the

outside protesting his rallies and that presents a problem for san jose. san jose is short staffed with officers and the department had very little notice of the rally. >> it's frustrating to have events like this with a depleted department like we have. just to answer 911 calls on a regular day we have many, many officers here on our days off being held over past their shift. today everybody is working. all the detective bureau, investigations are stopped, people are working, you know, 16-hour days for an exhaustive police force. this is devastating. >> so the police department will be calling just about all officers available to be here with mutual aid from neighboring departments and the santa clara county sheriff's department will be helped. some roads will be blocked. market will be shut down for several hours and that is

low clouds and fog there. very slow to burn off. i was watching the flag on the fly some breezy conditions there but then look, just a matter of a mile, mile and a half away, kpix 5 studios looking towards the bay bridge, we have crystal clear skies, lots of clear conditions there. san francisco now supporting 60 degrees but look at the temperature difference from san francisco to livermore. 26 degrees, 86 already in throughout the tri-valley. i was mentioning the flag was on the flyer at the golden gate bridge. the winds are up to 11 miles per hour. 12 across the bay in oakland. 12 in san ramon. that's good to know because of the stagnant air in the atmosphere. dana in novato our weather watcher is saying it's a beautiful day there but a little bit of a haze east bay. that's where we have a "spare the air" day in effect for today. the first one of the season, particulate matter tracked close to the surface never a good thing when you can see the

air that we breathe. there's our satellite-radar. you can see that marine layer very deep extending inland a good 45, 50 miles this morning retreating to the coast. partial clearing there today. and temperatures on the cooler side. otherwise we'll peak tomorrow and saturday with triple digits right here in the bay area. and at least a good 40-degree temperature span. okay, speaking of the beaches. we have that beach hazard statement in effect until later on tonight because there's a strong rip current in this yellow high late area. all our beaches facing to the southwest, they have the possibility of sneaker waves. it's currently in the mid-80s going up to 98 degrees in the state capital. we are in the 50s going up to 68 in monterey bay. high sierra perfect conditions at 76 degrees. here you have our numbers. look at this span. 64 degrees in half moon bay, 30 degrees warmer in fairfield. by the time the sun sets tonight, we have temperatures again pretty much 60s at the coast, 70s bayside, 80s peninsula, 90s inland. hotter friday and saturday. boy, summer has arrived and with it, it's festival time!

[ speaking spanish ] >> reporter: before the giveaway, he teaches basic computer concepts in spanish and english, then helps family sign up for low-cost internet service. he has taught the free classes for 16 years, mostly in oakland during his time off.
