michelle griego. this is all happening near pacific avenue and powell street in san francisco. gets get to jackie ward live at the scene -- let's get right to jackie ward live at the scene. jackie? >> reporter: anne, as you can see, we're just kind of waiting to see what happens next. behind me you can see that the area of pacific and powell is blonde to traffic as police continue to negotiate with the suspect. he is in a flat on the 900 block of pacific. police know exactly where the suspect is and are trying to get him to come out without incident. police say the suspect fired a single shot and officers did not fire back. the safety of everyone in this area is police's main concern right now. >> the primary concern in this case is that when officers arude at the scene and attempted -- arrived at the scene and attempted to take the person into custody. a shot was fired by the suspect. now we're dealing with burglary

with a suspect with a gun. >> reporter: a break-in call came in at 9:20. they believe the suspect went in through the roof. someone was home at the time. they escaped unharmed. police are asking those who work or live in the area to "shelter in place" and for everyone else, you're asked to avoid the area until further notice. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. one of the officers shot in a standoff in fremont is improving. it started with a traffic stop on wednesday. the suspect opened fire on two officers. he then fled and barricaded himself in a home. officers fired tear gas inside, which sparked a fire that burned the house down killing the suspect. both officers are in the hospital. one officer is still in critical condition. hillary clinton's campaign is making a swing in southern california. this morning, the democratic front-runner, she appeared in culver city with celebrities. clinton will also attend events in westminster, santa ana and

san bernardino. clinton's democratic rival bernie sanders is in the golden state in fairfield this afternoon. the weather wasn't going to deter his most fervent reporters from feeling the berne and the burn from the sun. people lined up at 10 a.m. the heat goes up as it gets later. >> hottest day of the month but it's okay. the weather doesn't matter because we're here to support bernie sanders and represent ourselves and the weather couldn't keep us from it. >> the event in fairfield is scheduled to start at 2:30 and from there sanders will be campaigning in cloverdale with susan sarandon, actress. a trump rally violence on the streets as protestors got physical. last night was a spectacle one that we have seen before outside trump rallies but the most vicious one we have seen here in california. kpix 5 reporter jackie ward

explains how the mayor is responding. >> reporter: it wasn't san jose's proudest moment. [ protestors yelling ] >> reporter: as people threw punches and screamed. mayor sam liccardo is appalled and tweeted out this morning, quote, there's absolutely no place for violence against people who are simply exercising their right to participate in the political process. donald trump wasn't thrilled with what happened either. today he said, rally last night in san jose was great, tremendous love and enthusiasm in the hall. big crowd. outside, small group of thugs burned american flags. >> assaulted several times while inside the anti-trump protest trying to get out to the street to get picked up by my parents. >> reporter: trump protestors chased supporters to parking garages. a few arrests were made and an

an officer was assaulted. details of the arrest will come later today. >> trump is getting ready for a 1:00 rally in redding today. doors open at 10 a.m. this morning at the redding municipal airport. a spokesman for the airport said that traffic is expected to be heavy as a result. it is definitely feeling like summer in parts of the bay area. some areas inland may be hitting the 90s today, possibly even triple digits. kpix 5 reporter kiet do has more on our heat wave. >> reporter: to give you some idea of just how hot it is in san jose already, by 8 a.m. it was in the mid-70s. so if you are lucky you'll find yourself sitting by a pool heading into the weekend. for the rest of us who aren't so lucky it's all about prehydrating. this person drinks water the night before and tell us his foreman when he needs a break. staying home from work because it's too hot, no way. that would cost him a day's pay about $200. >> why not tell your boss it's hot to work?

school now? i doubt it, kiet. looking at our dublin camera, skies are clear. it is getting hotter by the minute. let's go to kpix 5's roberta gonzales. she is joining us live from saint helena. roberta, how's it going? >> reporter: yeah. we have been in saint helena today. we have been in napa. now we are in oakville which is about 6 miles from saint helena. and i got to tell you, this place today is going to be one of the hottest north of the golden gate bridge. it is clear. it is sunny. it is hot. and it is dry! let's take a look at some of the hottest temperatures across the bay area right now. 94 degrees in walnut creek. it's also 94 hot degrees in pleasanton. six miles away in saint helena, low 90s. los gatos upper 80s. palo alto along the peninsula at 87 degrees. meanwhile, you want relief? you head to the coast. half moon bay is at 58 degrees. we are working a 36-degree temperature span at this lunch hour. as far as your high temperatures are concerned, for this friday, we will pan out to see the hottest day of this

warming trend today. mid-60s at the coast. 99 degrees away from the bay. but it will top off in the triple digits in brentwood, tracy, oakley, mountain house, and in discovery bay. we have changes for the weekend. we'll pinpoint which day to expect it. that's coming up a little later in this newscast. >> thank you. i'm impressed. you don't even look sweaty. go find some shade. former 49er dana stubblefield was in a santa clara courtroom today. he was scheduled to be arraigned on five felonies for the alleged assault of a woman at his home last year. but in court this morning, stubblefield's attorney asked the judge to recuse himself because they want him to get a fair trial in front of a jury of his peers. >> we think people in general are fair and once they are able to hear the evidence, they will make the right decision. >> the next court date is set for june 10. it's not the type of win the warriors or the cavs expected. but golden state is now one

barricaded himself in an apartment. jackie: let's get back to our breaking news in san francisco. jackie ward in chinatown where a suspect has barricaded himself inside an apartment. jackie. >> reporter: and the still very much a tense situation as this scene develops here on powell street. the area of powell and pacific still blocked off to traffic as police continue to negotiate with the suspect inside. he is in a flat on the 900 block of pacific and police know exactly where the suspect is. now trying to get him to come out without any incident. it all started when san francisco pd got a call of a break-in around 9:20 a.m. they believe the suspect entered the building through the roof. now, someone was home at the

time. that person was able to get out of the apartment unharmed. police are asking as you can see roping off this area as we speak, i'm actually being asked to move here, but they're blocking off more and more of the sidewalk here in chinatown trying to keep everyone safe. police say that that's their main concern because the suspect did fire a single shot. police did not return fire. that means we know the suspect is armed and dangerous. so that's why they are trying to keep people as far away from this scene as possible. that's the latest here from san francisco. >> thank you. at least part of i-5 near tracy will be back open today after a massive sinkhole popped up this week. investigators say that an abandoned old irrigation pipe is to blame for the sinkhole. it was spotted on tuesday forcing the closure of the northbound lane. then yesterday caltrans closed the southbound lane. caltrans says northbound lanes are expected to open at 5 p.m. the southbound lanes will be closed until tomorrow night at

8 p.m. the blue angels will not fly this weekend after yesterday's deadly crash in tennessee. the jet exploded into a huge fireball when it crashed just off the runway in smyrna, tennessee. the pilot was killed. he was practicing with the five other pilots for the airshow this weekend. that pilot was new to the elite flying team. he had flown in afghanistan before being recruited. the navy is investigate the cause of the crash. it is the warmest day of the workweek so far. highs approaching 90 around the bay area, 100 degrees inland. >> that's right. let's get back to kpix 5's roberta gonzales, who is live in saint helena today. roberta. >> reporter: we are in the saint helena area. we are at robert mondavi winery in the north bay. this is hot. we are here for a very special charity auction. i got more on that. but we got to get down to some business because this is the hottest day of the workweek. let's take a look at the

temperatures in the area. we have numbers in the 90s. walnut creek at 94. redwood city low 90s. oakland sunshine in the mid site of. in the city by the bay, the city of san francisco 74 degrees, we topped off at 77. oakland sunshine in the mid- 70s. a sea breeze right now that knocked the temperatures down. it's 85 in santa rosa. and nearly 90 in san jose. all right. here's what you need to know. today is the hottest day of the workweek. we do anticipate some cooling, kick-starting with tomorrow. and then gradual cooling next week. this is the reason why. let's show you our futurecast with our pacific satellite imagery. we have this area of low pressure. it's just hanging off the coast right now. it's going to be enhancing or marine layer and as it does so, high pressure is going to nudge up to the east and the temperatures come down five degrees inland. your high temperatures for today mid-60s at the beaches. high 90s inland. 100 degrees towards brentwood, tracy, oakley and discovery
