>> i'm kenny choi. a win here in california topped off an historical moment for the democratic presumptive nominee. clinton winning 56% of the vote in the golden state. reporter craig boswell is live in washington with where the presidential race goes now. craig. >> reporter: kenny, good afternoon. this is a pivotal time in the race for the white house. hillary clinton has claimed her place in history as the presumptive democratic nominee but i spoke to an operative who is very skeptical that bernie sanders is going to step aside so quickly. he has millions of supporters that hillary clinton needs. hillary clinton picks up wins in four of the six states that voted tuesday and broke barriers in the process. >> first time in our nation's history that a woman will be a major party's nominee. [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: in an emotional speech, she remembered her mother who was born the day the 19th amendment was ratified allowing women to vote.

she then spoke about donald trump. >> when he says, let's make america great again, that is coated for, let's take america backwards. >> reporter: bernie sanders wowed his supporters with promises to fight on. >> and we take our fight for social, economic, racial and environmental justice to philadelphia, pennsylvania! [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: but sanders is flying home to vermont today where he says he will assess the situation. he has a meeting with president obama at the white house on thursday to talk about how to advance the agenda he has pushed throughout the campaign. >> hello. >> reporter: donald trump delivered a more subdued primary night speech using a teleprompter. >> i will never, ever let you down. >> reporter: trump is still taking heat for questioning a federal judge's ability to preside over a lawsuit against trump university because of the judge's mexican heritage something even house speaker paul ryan denounced as racist. a san diego-based lawyers

association just put out a statement condemning trump for those comments about the judge. live at the white house, craig boswell kpix 5. another historic race we're watching closer to home, state attorney general kamala harris the former d.a. in san francisco edging out orange county rep loretta sanchez. harris was in san francisco last night and two democrats are vying for barbara boxer's u.s. senate seat. they will face off in november in a runoff. it's the first time a republican has not been on the ballot. the work isn't over for election staffers in san jose atoday. not even close. kpix 5 reporter kiet do tells us ballots are being counted around the clock by hand. that's quite a task. >> reporter: yeah. check it out. a couple of dozen employees now going full tilt. the hard work now begins counting the tsunami of mail-in ballots that will be coming in over the next couple of days. this looks to be the future of elections in this county and that's why they will work 24

hours a day until it's all counted. in the modern-day democracy of sillicon valley, this is how the sausage still gets made. one envelope at a time. fact, the vast majority, three out of four voters in santa clara county don't go to the polls. they mail in their ballots. so for the first time ever the registrar of voters pulled an all-nighter to get them counted quickly. kathleen roger worked 17 hours straits from 4 p.m. yesterday to 7 a.m. today. >> your adrenaline flows. elections going on so you feel that excitement wondering how the outcome is going to be. >> reporter: the rush of democracy. >> yes. exactly. >> reporter: this election cycle they will receive a quarter million mail-in ballots. normally they count until 2 a.m., break and then come back in the morning. but with anxious candidates and constituents, democracy cannot wait. >> santa clara county is 72% vote by mail and so we have

788,000 voters. 72% is a substantial amount of votes statewide and for a local county races. and we obvious want to provide the results fast. >> reporter: this machine helps with the grunt work. it scans and compares signatures, sorts by precincts and slices the envelopes open but it still takes a person to remove the ballot and flatten it for counting. kathleen says when working these long hours, it's a fine line between being quick and being sloppy. have you hit that point yet? do you think people are tired and making mistakes? >> not at this point. no. no. because -- because pretty soon, we'll be breaking to go home. >> reporter: so again they are take the ballots out by hand to feed them into the machines where they will be counted by a machine in another room. but yeah, check this out. this is part of the quarter million ballots that will be coming november the next couple of days and over the past couple election cycles they have seen the number of mail-in ballots increase by 5% each time and they don't think it will slow down any time soon.

penalty for three counts of sexual assault. the sentencing itself has become controversial. many call it too lenient. >> the judge really bent over backwards in order to give this young man a light sentence. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands are calling for the judge, who handed down the punishment, aaron persky, to be removed from the bench but others say he was fair. in an interview for the probation report last month, the victim herself said i want him to be punished but as a human i just want him to get better. he doesn't need to be behind bars. >> judge persky did a tremendous job in this sentence. >> reporter: the public defender knows persky well and says he doesn't deserve the backlash he is receiving. >> the fact that people are calling his courtroom and threatening him and his family, hoping that he dies badly, i mean, that's just ridiculous!! >> reporter: persky received at least 39 letters from turner's family and friends advocating for the 20-year-old. his sister wrote a series of alcohol-fueled decisions will

define him for the rest of his life. turner's sexual assault conviction stems from a 2015 fraternity party on stanford's campus. witnesses describe the victim as lying on her back motionless while turner, aggressively thrusted his hips into her in the grass near a dumpster. >> she was unconscious. i checked her and she didn't move. >> reporter: when the victim read an emotional laetner last letter in court last week she was disappointed to his lack of remorse or responsibility. >> outrage, social media on fire. people are angry. they are frustrated. they want to find a place to direct that energy. >> reporter: the stanford campus newspaper the daily stanford reports that a demonstration is planned for commencement day. that is sunday. john blackstone, milpitas, california. developing news in oakland, police say a possible kidnap victim is safe and another

sharapova has been suspended from competition for two yes -- for doping. new at noon, five time grand slam tennis champion maria sharapova has been suspended from competition for two years for doping. the decision handed down this morning by the international tennis federation. sharapova tested positive for a banned substance in january. she was unaware it was a banned substance and she will appeal. thousands of free tickets

to muhammed ali's memorial are gone. kenneth craig reports. >> reporter: for emma and her 8- year-old great-grandson, muhammad ali's funeral isn't just any event. >> thank you! got my ticket, yay! >> reporter: it's a moments in history. >> i'm a fan of muhammed ali, the greatest man in the world. >> reporter: the louisville native arrived it the downtown arena 10:30 tuesday night and made friends with strangers in line sharing her memories of him growing up. >> he would always say i'm pretty, i'm pretty. i'm going to be the world's next heavyweight champion. >> reporter: thousands of others lined the streets of louisville for a chance at some of the 14,000 available free tickets. organizers are expecting to fill the arena friday. for those who don't get a ticket, the service will be shown on big screens outside and streamed online. regina thompson says she wouldn't miss the chance to say good-bye to her hometown hero. >> being able to see a home
