[ laughter ] >> today we're talking about chronic urinary tract infections and what causes them. >> so the thing is a lot of dogs and cats have these recurrent urinary tract infections and when that happens it's important to diagnose it. we run a urinal sis and culture and would recommend doing an ultrasound of the abdomen for stones and polyps, worst-case scenario cancer. at the same time we can evaluate the kidneys because sometimes the kidneys are infected and they are seeding. they are sending bacteria down into the urinary bladder and so that requires, you know, sometimes long-term low dose antibiotics. and sometimes versus anatomical problems, female dogs specifically, that can lead to
12:23 pm
them collecting bacteria by their vulvar region and that's a surgical correction. so what you watch for is sometimes they are licking themselves a lot. sometimes they are drinking more water. sometimes they are urinating more. some dogs will -- what owners think are marking but in fact it's that they have to pee a lot so they are constantly squatting to urinate and only a few drops are coming out. it's true that about 50% of dogs and cats show no symptoms of a bladder infection. so the moment you see something that's a call of to the veterinarian. >> a urinary tract infection one isn't a problem but constant is a problem? >> today we're talking about chronic recurrent urinary tract infection. lulu is getting ready to have an ultrasound so we can check and see what's going on and check her kidneys at the same time. >> we hope lulu recovers and is okay. love the giants gear. say bye-bye! all right. if you have a question about your pet's health and well- being, just just email pets@kpix.com, and we'll have our pet expert give you an answer every friday right here at noon.
