(applause) >> welcome back. now ladies and gentlemen, our next presenter is very nervous as it is his first time at the tonys, please get behind him. give him a warm welcome, it's neil patrick harris. >> it gives me great pleasure to be here tonight. i'm currently working on a project in vancouver, not "the king and i: live!" but as a member of the community, i couldn't pass up the opportunity to come back to new york to be a part of this amazing night. this season, work by the men nominated for best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical has been fearless, inspiriational, groundbreaking. the nominees are: alex brightman, "school of rock - the musical." danny burstein, "fiddler on the roof." zachary levi, "she loves me."

i thank god for the calling on your life. there has been a lot of talk, deserved talk tonight about the cabinet, about those four brilliant men who pushed us higher, who pushed us to greatness, deserved talk. but i want to talk for a second about my cabinet which was this brilliant company of actors. i wish i knew which camera to look into. i know you are off in a room on the side but i want to tell you something. you are extraordinary in every way. don't ever let anybody ever tell you otherwise. you are limitless, boundless. i thank you for the fiddlity of your friend shivment i almost didn't make it here. i almost fell. and everywhere i looked, there was a renee, there was a phillipa, you are a lion, there was say sash ra, ephraim, an oak, a daveed, an anthony, a jasmine, a john, i can't say all of your names but i thank you so

oh, my god. >> massacre in orlando. >> this was an act of terror and an act of hate. >> a gunman opened fire in a gay nightclub. >> there was blood splattering. >> and carries out the deadliest mass shooting in american history. >> no one can tell me where my son is. >> the gunman killed in a hail of police gunfire after he pledge allegiance to isis. now we know he has been on the fbi's radar twice before. >> when are we going to realize we need to address the gun violence. >> from the bay area, across the country, tonight america

stands with orlando. [ singing ] >> and i am juliette goodrich live in orlando, florida. 24 hours later after the deadly mass shooting. i am a block away from the nightclub. it is now blocked off. we can't go further. tonight we learned 50 victims in all of this, 53 injured, many critically injured and we are learning more about the shooter killed by police, he is 29-year-old omar mateen, an american citizen. we are getting more information on him and also the victims of the massacre. family members cried and held each other after finding out about their loved ones. they gathered waiting for news, for many the news was devastating. police say omar mateen took an ar-15 rifle into pulse nightclub in orlando and opened

fire around 2:00 a.m., the club closes at 2:30 a.m. [ indiscernible ] >> no specific purpose. just shooting anybody and anything. >> reporter: among the victims a 34-year-old, a 23-year-old. omar mateen called 911 to pledge allegiance to isis and took several people hostage. three hours later a s.w.a.t. team went in. omar mateen was killed. one officer injured. his helmet is credited for saving his life. he just visited friends in the hospital. >> i have been in the hospital, my friends are okay right now. they are all shot. yeah. yeah. >> reporter: did they tell you what happened? >> they see this guy with a gun shooting everybody from a corner. >> reporter: omar he was

supposed to go -- he was supposed to go to the nightclub last night but didden. >> reporter: do you have friends inside tonight? >> yes. three friends inside there. dead. >> reporter: sorry. >> reporter: he was a security guard, born in new york, his family moved to florida. his ex-wife said he was short temped and abusive. >> mentally ill. that is the only explanation i could give. >> reporter: friends and family searched hospitals for people who were in the club. but many know their loved ones aren't coming back. and tonight we are seeing the text messages from the people inside the nightclub. one party sent a text message to his mother, mumpy, i love

you, he is coming -- mommy, i love you, he is coming, i am going to die. cell phones could be heard ringing in the pockets of victims who didn't make it. as you imagine tonight cities across the country are paying their respects and mourning the loss of the victims and what happened here in orlando and especially thousands of miles away from me is joe vazquez in san francisco where they are paying special tribute. joe? >> san francisco 80 is -- city hall lit up tonight. a crowd held an emotional ceremony. francisco's lgbt community. >> we are here today to recommit our selves to the fight, to honor the survivors, to send good energy to the family and the friends who had been left behind. >> reporter: they are here it mourn the events in orlando and express their shock that it could even happen.the crowd was peaceful and angry at times, mayor ed lee had to speak through a chorus of boos. >> we are here in unity so we could stop this violence and we want it make sure that san francisco leads the way. >> reporter: many came to be close to the community to try to understand how they are still targets. >> i thought this kind of violence was in our past and this was definitely a wake up call telling us it is not and there is still a lot of fight ahead of us and i am just glad

to see we have a huge number of people who are here willing to fight for that. >> reporter: there were a lot of tears tonight. a lot of resolve as a lot of people said they are determined to make sure that something like this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: joe vazquez live in san francisco. back here in orlando, florida, we can't go past this area, we are a block away from the nightclub. there are coroner's vans lined up as many bodies are still inside. the hospital is a block and a half away from here. one of the leading trauma centers in the area. surgeons and nurses working over time to help those critically injured. coming up i will have more on what the orlando residents are doing help out. they showed up in thousands today lined up in 90-degree

weather to give blood, tonight blood is desperately needed. back to you. >> juliette goodrich, thank you. >> this is the first week of ramadan. some groups use it to stage brutal attacks but tonight one message of peace at a bay area mosque. >> dozens of people in san jose gathered for a vigil to send thoughts and prayers to the families of the shooting victims. >> the lgbt community has a slogan called betted together. -- better together. it is us better together with the community. >> they are still in shock but there to mourn in solidarity.

and. >> the flag was lowered to honor the shooting victims. president obama ordered flags half-staff till sunset thursday. president obama took to the airways today. >> this is a reminder that attacks on any american, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation, is an attack on all of us. on the values of equality and dignity that define us as a country. >> the presidential candidates are weighing in. hillary clinton saying this was an act of terrorism. we can say we have to redouble our efforts to defend our country from these threats. >> donald trump tweeted i said this was going to happen. i am trying to save lives and prevent the next terror attack. we can't afford to be

politically correct anymore. more about the gunman. in the middle of the shooting omar mateen called 911 and pledge allegiance to isis. while isis is claiming responsibility investigators will look for any terrorist ties. >> they will look for cell cell phones, computer devices, they will dissect those, see who he had contact with, when he had contact with them, the websites he visited to find out if the websites had -- >> omar mateen was interviewed by the fbi in 2013 after making terrorist comments to co- workers and in 2014. a scare this morning near west hollywood gay pride parade when a man was arrested in

santa monica. the suspect had assault weapons and explosives and he told police he was going to the parade. police are not sure what he was planning on doing. security was beefed up but the gay pride parade went on as planned. 46 years ago we took to the streets to march against violence and we are doing had same thing today. -- the same thing today. i encourage everyone to support the community and be part of this. >> police say there are no known connections between him and the orlando shooter. still ahead a new fall out from a police department sex scandal. another bay area officer taken off the streets and protesters at stanford university granduation ceremony, their message for the -- graduation ceremony, their message. >> and time for a cool change in the bay area, before a big warm up. details coming up.
