supporters saying he'll help prevent donald trump from ever stepping foot in the white house but stopped short of endorsing hillary clinton. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. orlando is preparing to bury more victims from the pulse nightclub massacre. president obama paid his respects yesterday and made the case for new gun-control measures. and new video emerged from inside the club as the attack was underway. marlie hall is in orlando. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as people here in orlando continue to pay their respects to those who died, new graphic details are emerging about the horrifying moments in a nightclub when a gunman opened fire and took 49 lives. this grainy cell phone video showed more than a dozen people packed into a bathroom stall as omar mateen went on a deadly shooting spree inside the pulse nightclub in orlando.

miguel leiva was shot multiple times. >> we tried to keep everybody calm and quiet so he wouldn't come back and the shoot at us. >> reporter: president obama and vice president joe biden left 49 white roses to honor the dead at a memorial. >> we will not be able to stop every tragedy. we can't wipe away hatred and evil from every heart in this world, but we can stop some tragedies. we can save some lives. >> reporter: nearly two dozen victims are still hospitalized. one is angel colon, shot six times and one of the last to get out. >> my name is officer omar delgado. i'm one of the ones that helped you get out of harm's way. >> reporter: thursday he met his hero, omar delgado. the officer who risked his life

and pulled him to safety. >> i saw him with his glasses -- like, help me, please. >> reporter: funeral services for the victims will continue throughout the weekend. >> marlie hall in orlando, thank you very much. the orlando gunman, omar mateen, contacted his wife during the attack. as jeff pegues reports, concerned employees at one gun store contacted the fbi after mateen tried to shop there but didn't know his name. >> reporter: gun storeowner robert able says in the weeks before the orlando shooting, omar mateen tried to buy body armor at his gun shop. mateen was told the store didn't sell body armor. >> at this time, he pulled away and got on to the cell phone. when he was on his cell phone, he had a conversation in a foreign language that was more concerning. then he came back and was requesting ammo. >> reporter: able says his

employees were so concerned they called the fbi. authorities say the gun store was not able to provide them with a name. on the night of the shooting, an official familiar with mateen, he said he was active on social media before and during the rampage. he posted on facebook prior to the shooting "alliance to isis leader baghdadi." then after the shooting began, he paused and searched for pulse orlandoand shooting, perhaps to see if the massacre was trending on line. he also called 911 and to a television station about the ongoing shooting. investigators are focusing on what role mateen's wife might have played in the attack. she has been cooperating. officials believe she had some knowledge of an attack and will likely face some charge. school records show that omar mateen was a troubled child and

a disciplinary problem. he was suspended for 48 total days while in high school. most were for fighting and other rule violations. in an application for a college criminal justice program, mateen wrote that he wanted a career in law enforcement as far back as 2004. he wrote that in ninth grade, "i got into a fight with a fellow student in class. i was expelled." he admitted he had been arrested and the subject of a criminal investigation but did not elaborate. he also admit to using marijuana and steroids. in 2007, mateen was dismissed from a job at the florida department of corrections. it is unclear why. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. the state department is reviewing a cable signed by 51 mostly midlevel diplomats sharply criticizing u.s. policy in syria. the cable urges air strikes against the assad regime to force the syrian government into accepting a cease-fire. as many as half a million people have died in the syrian civil war. a section of the cable quoted in "the new york times" reads, "the moral rationale for taking steps

to end the deaths and suffering in syria after five years of brutal war is evident and unquestionable." overseas, the first member of the british parliament to be killed in a quarter century is being remembered. jo cox was a lawmaker who campaigned for britain to stay in the european union. the critical vote is scheduled for next week. investigators are trying to determine whether it played a role in her death. jonathan vigliotti with our report. >> reporter: police tackled the gunman identified as 52-year-old tommy mair and retrieved the gun. jo cox's purse and shoes were left in the street. british media quoted witnesses that claim maher rushed cox shouting "britain first." other witnesses said cox got caught in a fit between mair and another man. >> i saw him pulling the begin out. then he went live with it and fired one shot.

>> reporter: police would only say dock was shot and stabbed as she was wrapping up a meeting with constituents. she leaves behind a husband and two small children. her murder comes on the homestretch of a bitter referendum campaign over whether britain should remain in the european union. both sides suspended their campaigns today. elected to parliament last year, the former aide worker was an outspoken advocate of immigration. >> can the prime minister tell the house whether he thinks he has led public opinion on the refugee crisis or followed it? >> reporter: cox's husband, brendan, believes she was targeted for her politics. "we must all unite," he wrote, "to fight the hatred that killed her." now to politics in this country. in his latest video to supporters, bernie sanders pledged to make certain donald trump is beaten, but he did not concede defeat himself, nor did he endorse hillary clinton. adam may reports. >> reporter: hillary clinton will have to wait until the

the nba finals is headed to a seventh and decisive game. lebron james scored 41 points to lead the cavs to a 115-101 win over golden state. steph curry had 31 but was fouled out and ejected in the fourth quarter after cursing at the ref and throwing his mouth guard into the stands. another great performance by james. after the game, he threw the spotlight to veteran tnt reporter craig sager, fighting leukemia, who got to finally cover his very first nba finals game thanks to espn. >> a question -- how in the hell you go 30-plus years without going a finals game? that don't make no sense. but i'm happy to see you, man. much love and respect. and i'm happy i'm able to went this in front of the fans. thank you very much. >> thank you for entertaining me.

thank you. >> great. if cleveland wins sunday, they would be the first team to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the nba finals. and the united states men's soccer team paid tribute to the 49 victims killed inside the orlando gay nightclub. before kickoff, teams paused for a moment of silence. american captain michael bradley wore a rainbow armband reading "one nation." on the pitch, a nail-biter for the u.s. men's national soccer team as it took on ecuador in a knockout match in seattle. clint dempsey scored in front of his crowd in the first half. both sides swapped penalties and played a man down. coming up big for the stars and stripes getting the assist on the u.s.' winning goal in the second half. the u.s. is through to the semifinals of the copa america cup but face venezuela or argentina, both powerhouses in their own right. also out west, an out-of-control wildfire has forced hundreds to evacuate. the sherpa fire in southern california exploded, pushed by

40 mile-per-hour winds. it's burned some 1,700 acres and forced officials to close 20 miles of a major coastal freeway. about 400 residents and campers have been forced to evacuate. the fire is burning in an area that hasn't seen a wildfire in 60 years. so far no structures have been damaged or injuries reported. meanwhile, another wildfire in central new mexico has burned 25 square miles. that fire is moving fast. and in all areas that have been evacuated, the power has been shut off. the fire is fueled by gusty winds and 90 degree temperatures. dozens were forced to abandon their homes. a coroner says the toddler who was attacked by an alligator in florida died from drowning and traumatic injuries. 2-year-old lane graves was pulled under water tuesday evening while wading in a lake at disney world in orlando. disney will reportedly add a warning about alligators to its no swimming signs.

philadelphia passes a soda tax, and chicago is ramping up security. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the chicago tribune" reports that security will be increased for gay pride events the flex two weekends. hundreds of extra cops are being brought. in the attack on a gay nightclub in orlando prompted the upgrade. police are enlisting help from the fbi and private security firms for the event. philly.com reports that philadelphia will be the nation's first big city to tax soda. starting next year, sugar, sweetened, and diet drinks will be taxed a penny and a half per ounce. the city council passed it despite a big campaign by the beverage industry. the soda tax is expected to raise $91 million a year. "the new york times" reports that microsoft is the first big company to serve the marijuana industry. it will offer software to help states track pot plants from seed to sale. corporations have avoided the marijuana trade despite the recent wave of recreational and

here's another look at this morning's top stories. president obama traveled to orlando to meet the victims in the nightclub shooting. the president and vice president biden stopped at a makeshift memorial. during his visit, the president appealed for gun control. and the orlando gunman, omar mateen, communicated with his wife during the attack. the owner of a gun store said mateen tried to buy body armor at the shop a week before the attack. when told the store didn't -- when told the store didn't sell body armor, mateen on the on the phone and spoke in a foreign language. store employees became suspicious and notified the fbi, but they did not have mateen's name.

[ siren ] >> reporter: in virginia where the virginia tech shootings killed 32 people, there is no waiting period to purchase a firearm including handguns and so-called assault rifles similar to those used in orlando and san bernardino. a cbs news producer went to a gun store in alexandria just outside of washington, d.c. >> i would like to buy an ar-15. >> reporter: per virginia law, she provided a driver's license and voter i.d. card to prove residency, as well as her passport to show u.s. citizenship. she filled out these federal and state forms requiring her name, date of birth, social security number, and a few basic questions about any past criminal activity or current restraining orders. she also passed a brief electronic background check. >> did this go through? >> it did. you've been approved. >> reporter: 38 minutes and $1,030 for her to walk out of the store legally armed with this rifle, 100 rounds of
