way involving 2 lawsuits regarding the arena. kpix 5's anne makovec reports. >> reporter: this is the latest in a string of challenges to that project. the mission bay alliance once again trying to call a time- out. [ sirens in the background ] >> reporter: the piece of land in question is now an empty lot in mission bay across 3rd street from the ucsf medical center campus. this is what the warriors want to turn it into. a complex featuring a new 18,000-seat arena to house the nba champion team. >> it's going to be a disaster for san francisco. >> reporter: the mission bay alliance says the arena will create a traffic nightmare around the hospital especially if there are simultaneous events at the arena and at at&t park a few blocks to the north. >> all the noise and shouting and the music and the loudness, this will really create havoc on the patients being treated. >> reporter: the lawsuit alleges san francisco overlooked important environmental regulations in a

rush to approve the project. >> that's ridiculous. it's been a well thought out project. >> reporter: san francisco's city attorney is ready to defend it. >> that the city has come up with a traffic management plan and public transit strategy to make sure that the -- that the impact on the hospital and the patients and minimize it. >> reporter: they are asking the judge to set aside the permits and delaying the arena set to open in 2019. >> we'll win the fight. >> reporter: the judge's decision in this case is expected by july 18. live in san francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. warriors fans are still getting over yesterday's frustrating loss in cleveland to the cavaliers. but to add insult to injury, today we're learning that the nba has fine the steph curry and coach steve kerr $25,000 apiece. he was automatically

ejected for tossing his mouthpiece into the game after fouling out. kerr was fined for his remarks about how the game was officiated. the series heads to oracle arena in oakland for game 7 sunday. the team that wins that game on sunday will be crowned nba champs. warriors fans can buy tickets to the game online starting at 5 p.m. scary moments for a san francisco neighborhood and crews rushed to cap a gas leak. just before 10:00 neighbors reported smelling gas on juanita avenue in mira loma park neighborhood. chopper 5 was overhead as officials assessed the damage. four homes were evacuated as a precaution. crews stopped the leak about an hour later. another person added to the growing list of oakland police officers placed on administrative leave. sources tell kpix 5 that the new investigation involves sergeant michael gantt accused of having his girlfriend write

up his police reports and they are supposed to be confidential. this is the latest scandal plaguing the police department. the investigation is under related unrelated to the case -- unrelated to the case involving 18-year-old celeste guap who says she had sex with over 20 bay area officers and of those 20, three she said were opd officers and was a minor when it happened. >> it is disgusting and disturbing that this type of behavior could go on or be tolerated and i'm committed to rooting it out and holding people accountable who engage in it. >> this comes in a week when libby schaaf has swapped out three different police chiefs. her office says the it can't discuss the details of the scandals but that, quote, this is an effort to reassure the public that we are taking swift action to address every instance of misconduct. oakland residents and the good

men and women in the oakland police department who noblably serve this community deserve nothing less. the sfpd is weathering problems of its own. in a short time, civil rights attorney john burris will file a claim against the department for the killing of a homeless man that was caught on camera. back in april staff at a homeless shelter called police reporting that luis gongora was wielding a kitchen knife. cops shot him with bean babs bags. they then opened fire at him when he came at them with a knife. the lawyer says they violated policy. this is the first step toward a civil suit. the man accused of killing sierra lamar was in court today in san jose for a hearing. antolin garcia-torres was joined by his attorney as he faced a judge today. he is accused of kidnapping and killing the 15-year-old on the way to school in morgan hill in 2012. her remains have never been found. the judge is pushing to start

the murder trial august 1. a frighteningly close call for friends at a santa clara home. kiet do says they were catching up when their conversation was interrupted by a suspected drunk driver who slammed into the living room. >> reporter: this could have been ended tragically here in santa clara but this story has a happy ending. patrick paul says he was just on the other side of the wall enjoying wine with the best man from his wedding looking over the wedding album when they heard a crash and see headlights coming through the window. they cheated death. >> there's no way to explain, but, you know, lucky is the only thing we can say. >> reporter: at 10:30 last night a driver lost control on the corner of lafayette and lewis streets and crashed into another car. it sheared off a light pole plowed through a metal fence and headed straight for the house. once the car reached the thousands slowed down enough so that the car just came to a rest on the porch. santa clara police say the drive was under the influence

of alcohol when he got into the crash. the two friends called it a miracle. >> maybe one good deed we did in the past now we're kind of, you know, kind of reasoning the karma from it but, ah -- it's -- it's -- it's tough. it's surreal. >> reporter: paul just got married and lives here with his wife and son. he says the driver's bad choices endangered his family's life. >> definitely very, very angry, um, you know, i -- with all the things these days, even options like uber and lyft, at least definitely no reason for it. >> reporter: the victims were cut by flying glass and had cuts on their feet when they ran through the living room barefoot. the driver tried to leave the scene but paul kept him there until police arrived. the man has been arrested and charged with dui. the landlord warned the family this happened one time before where a car plowed up onto the property. kiet do, kpix 5. >> the suspect faces dui and

felony hit-and-run charges. he has been identified as 21- year-old francisco cortez cruz. a passenger riding with him was also arrested. the raging "sherpa fire" in santa barbara county is not slowing down. this photo was taken by the noaa satellite from space. you see the white smoke streaming across the santa barbara coast. officials say the fire more than doubled to 4,000-acre overnight driven by 40-mile-per- hour winds. the flames went from the mountains to the 101 freeway. they dropped water on cars to keep them from burning. >> it's insane. it's nothing like i have ever seen. it's terrifying. >> very dangerous. >> hundreds of firefighters are battling the fire using half a dozen air tankers and helicopters. as of this morning, it's only 5% contained. an american airlines flight bound for los angeles makes an emergency landing in san jose. the flight had left san francisco this morning when the

pilot reported mechanical issues. it was diverted to san jose. the plane landed safely about 7:00. no word on the cause of the mechanical issues. microsoft is breaking into some marijuana business. the company has partnered with kind financial to provide a tracking service that helps government officials keep tabs on legalized medical and recreational marijuana. kind has been selling its tracking software for three years. but the partnership will allow kind to work on microsoft's cloud system. facebook will start tracking which stores you're shopping in. businesses will be able to include a map of the closest store in their ad and then facebook will use the phone's location to see if people went there to shop. coming up, a major breakthrough in the egyptair plane crash. where crews discovered the second black box. >> authorities investigating the orlando shooting now focusing on the wife. the text messages exchanged between them during the shooting. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

the orlando terror attacks zeroing in on the shooter's wife. reporter craig boswell tells us: it could be just a matter of time before noor the investigation into the orlando over it. >> reporter: attacks is zeroing in on the shooters wife. reporter craig boswell tells us it could be a matter of time before noor salman faces charges in connection with the nightclub massacre. >> reporter: there is growing evidence the wife of the orlando shooter may have helped him plan the rampage. law enforcement sources confirm he and his wife were texting when he carried out the attack. the words i love you were exchange. sources say she purchased ammunition with him and was in the car when he cased the pulse nightclub. the terror inside the club was captured on cell phone video more than a dozen people in a bathroom for three hours. not everyone survived. >> there was a guy that he was

choking on his own blood and he wanted water so bad. so we just were trying to comfort him as much as we could. >> reporter: some people were freed when a s.w.a.t. team broke through the bathroom walls. when it was over 49 people were dead and dozens more wounded. the city of orlando is doing its part to help families of the victims. more than $7 million has already been collected to help with funerals, plane tickets and other expenses. >> it became very clear early on that there were families and individuals and victims that were in need and in need of compensation in a very quick fashion. >> 94 families of victims and survivors have contacted orlando' assistance center for help. craig boswell, cbs news orlando. >> as five of those victims are laid to rest today, tributes here in the bay area are planned for those who died. right now, there is a prayer vigil at miracles of faith church in oakland and at 4:00 a community vigil will be held at

the county center plaza in redwood city. a gathering in south carolina to remember the deadly church shooting a year ago today. [ singing ] >> they arethe community paid tribute to the nine killed at mother emanuel ame church. the man charged in the killing dylann roof goes to trial in november. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. new at noon, crews have found the second black box of the egyptair plane that crashed last month. the flight data recorder was pulled out of the mediterranean sea today just north of egypt. it was badly damaged but searchers say they were able to recover the crucial memory unit of the device. on thursday, crews found the plane's cockpit voice recorder. investigators hope these findings will help determine what happened. 56 people on board were killed.

here's roberta with the forecast. >> happy friday, everybody. good afternoon. this is a view looking out from the estuary towards the skyline of san francisco. hazy conditions. the area of low pressure is off the northern california coast. you can see the clouds slipping into the bay area and the rain gone. we have some light rain showers around the redding area. clouds will be going out. toward the evening commute some filtered sunshine around the bay area. there you saw a spotty shower just nicking the ukiah area. by saturday morning an offshore flow begins and we have sunshine with the coast it will be clear. 80s and 90s in the central valley. 60s in the monterey bay area carmel and pebble beach much warmer this weekend.

losing weight which will happen eventually. basically, the disease is because there's a nodule or tumor in the thyroid gland located in the neck and it can be benign or malignant although most of the time it's benign but untreated hypothyroidism will lead to death. it will spread and they will die. because it's treatable it's great to try to do something for them. you sometimes see increased water consumption, urination, vomiting and diarrhea as it is untreated. then it leads to heart disease and liver disease. >> how quickly does it progress. i would describe it as medium. once they have the disease owners will notice something in six months or so. always call of the vet right away if at least change. radiation treatment is the gold standard for getting rid of it. >> thank you, dr. jill. kona, thank you, as well. if you have any questions about
