>> ninan: good evening, i'm reena ninan with a western edition of the broadcast. summer officially begins monday with a dangerous heatwave baking the southwest. temperatures are expected to top 120 degrees in some places. 116 in phoenix, arizona, where excessive heat killed 84 people last year. health officials are warning people to stay hydrated and if possible indoors. extreme heat is adding to the struggle to contain several major wildfires in the west. near santa barbara, california, a wildfire continues to threaten about 270 homes. fire officials are hoping the winds don't get stronger overnight. in central new mexico a huge fire has destroyed at least two dozen homes. the national guard has been called in to prevent looting in evacuated neighborhoods. meteorologist pamela gardner from our boston station wbz has more on the extreme heat. ord ecord heat will continue for monday and tuesday. notice how the jet stream is all the way up into canada where eali are dealing with severe

weather and also for the northern plain states. while in the desert southwest, unfortunately, the heat dome will continue to bring triple digit temperatures as well as wildfire threats. d flflag warnings are out around los angeles until tuesday. due to the gusty winds, the low relative humidity levels and those triple digit temperatures. so the scorching southwest, here we go. dvat advisories are out, excessive heat warnings out from las vegas, to l.a., phoenix and yuma where we expect temperatures to be in the triple digits. forecast highs monday, las vegas 109, tuesday, 108, 122 for palm springs. 124 degrees expected for death valley, california on monday with 123 degrees expected on tuesday. tharecord that will actually still stand though is going to be the all time death valley record of 134 degrees. that was set back in july of 1913. >> ninan: pamela gardner, thanks. it's been one week since 49 people were killed in an orlando nightclub.

won't hear a word about the shooter is at the hospital where 49 crosses line a waterfront memorial. s mourners walk by in near silence rosalie ramos stood in front of her son's cross. stanley almodovar iii was just 23. >> there was a shootout here. as reporter: when her son was heot, he gave a cell phone to a friend begging that friend to call his mother. >> he just wanted to call you and i'm calling you about everything that happened. >> she never answered. >> my mom's a doctor and knows what to do. >> reporter: today his stepfather played that voice mail. >> please call me back. >> reporter: rosalie ramos does not know who left that voice mail on her phone. today after spending an hour in front of her son's cross, she took his cell phone to f.b.i. investigators.

from republicans for expanding his proposal to ban muslims from entering the country. >> ninan: a fascinating interview that john dickerson had, julianna goldman, thank e u. : ohio gun store owner is dead a llowing a tragic accident during a gun safety class. james baker of the kay jay gun shop was killed when a student accidentally shot through a wall, he was just sitting in the wrong place at the wrong time. actor anton yelchin has died, his car accidentally rolled and pinned him against a wall in the driveway of his home in california. yelchin was best known for playing chekhov in the new j.j. abrams "star trek" films and had major parts in "terminator hlvation" and "green room." he was just 27 years old. we're learning more about the 12 girls who were rescued from a house of horrors in southeast, pennsylvania. uney were found living with a eastin the town of feasterville. demarco morgan is there. >> reporter: many neighbors say they were concerned about what ses happening inside lee kaplan's house.

lut this woman tells us she had no clue what was happening on the other side of her fence. playormal kids, playing, riding bikes. >> no, very sheltered. mainly i would see them in the front yard working a small garden in the front. they would sit down and work the garden. >> reporter: investigators came to the home on thursday and found 12 amish girls ranging in age from six months to 18 years old living with kaplan. he was arrested and faces charges including statutory sexual assault. the oldest victim told police she is the mother of a three year old and six month old both fathered by kaplan. ngplan told police he began having sex with her when she was 14. the girl's parents daniel and savilla stoltzfus told investigators they gave their daughter to kaplan as payment for a loan and daniel stoltzfus says he thought it would be legal after doing research online. the parents are also under ndrest. the girls are now in the state's custody, and lancaster county,

home to a large amish community, afetr southampton public safety director robert hoopes says investigators will interview the girls tomorrow. >> the kids were living down in the basement on air mattresses. but they, i guess they were homeschooling the kids because there was homework found down there. >> reporter: hoopes told cbs news the children appear to be in good condition but authorities have not confirmed if all of the girls are related. >> ninan: demarco morgan in feasterville, pennsylvania, thank you, demarco. atkland california police department is investigating a sex scandal involving allegations of officers having sex with a minor. and now, two other internal investigations have surfaced regarding confidential information being shared with people outside the department. and racial text messages exchanged between officers, mireya villarreal has the latest. >> i want to assure the citizens nd oakland that we are hell-bent ti rooting out this disgusting culture, and holding those

accountable. responsible for their misdeeds. >> reporter: mayor libby schaaf is beyond frustrated with what she calls the frat house mentality at in the oakland police. after just two years, sean whent resigned amid a sex scandal investigation of several senior seficers accused of having sex with a minor. ben fairow replaced him after a week after being appointed and paul figueroa left the top spot. >> there are ten other officers .hat they knew from involved. >> reporter: this 18 year old who claims to be the woman at mse center of the sex scandal. toldtold our san francisco affiliate two years ago when she was a minor, she slept with at oaast three oakland police officers. she did not consider herself a victim at the time. >> these men in uniform, you know, giving me protection. >> reporter: she says she is cooperating with the internal

investigation sharing these text messages she claims were between thesand an officer. before that senate committee on tuesday. l be are you going to tell those senators that they don't already know about isis? >> well, the ideology of isis is quite complicated. many people have spoken about it. but i think i will try to convey kind of how the ideology plays out on the ground in syria and iraq. rather than just what books they t in and basically what inspires this group. and how this group recruits people. hahave spoken to dozens of isis members. i asked them about what books they read, what kind of-- what clerics they follow and how they view things. so you know, i try to pass on a sense of how that works on the ground. >> ninan: and c.i.a. director john brennan said last week that there is no direct link between isis and the orlando shooter. but does this orlando attack mean that the war with isis is heading in a new direction? >> absolutely.

has been troubled. in may kenneth shinzato an ex- marine who worked on the base was arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a 20 year old okinawan woman. also this year a sailor pled guilty to rape and another sailor was arrested for drunk ng ting after injuring two people. okinawans told us they are not anti-american, they just want the u.s. military which has been on this island since the end of world war ii, gone or dramatically downsized. cial military officials tell us they too are outraged by the recent crimes after the death of the 20 year old, they instituted a 30 day mourning period, banning drinking off base and imposing a midnight curfew. and while thousands of marines are in the process of being relocated off of the island, reena, this is a hard location to give up. okinawa is right in the heart of east asia. >> ninan: certainly an important location. adrianna diaz in okinawa, thank you. coming up next, meet piper, the wonder dog covering plenty of

killing the pilot in a small plane plummets on to a set of east bay b.a.r.t. tracks, killing the pilot instantly. now we're learning more about what may have brought it down. good evening. i'm brian hackney. >> and i'm juliette goodrich. the plane crashed just before noon in b.a.r.t.'s hayward maintenance yard along sandival way. devin fehely is there with the new details. >> the plane crashed a short distance behind me. the pilot was trying to find a safe place to put this plane down. he didn't find one and he didn't survive that crash but he did manage to avoid injuring anyone on the ground. >> having issues with your left engine? >> reporter: the radio traffic gives a window in to the

harrowing final moments of the flight. >> is there any field you could possibly land at? >> reporter: having trouble keeping the plane in the air, the pilot desperately skims the ground, looking for a safe place to land. >> we noticed he was really low. >> reporter: moments later the plane plunged from the sky, crashing near the b.a.r.t. tracks where it would burst in to flames. >> a big explosion, sounded like a big boom. >> we saw the plume of smoke. we called 911, let them know where we were at. my husband and my youngest son went and ran down there to try to see what was happening. >> reporter: but they weren't prepared for what they'd find. the pilot trapped, the plane burning. the would-be good samaritans powerless to help. federal investigators are now trying to figure out exactly what went wrong. witnesses say the plane appeared to be having mechanical problems. >> it was a two-engine plane. i know at least one of them was not working. >> reporter: the crash caused b.a.r.t. to shut down
