under heat warnings and advisories. good afternoon. i'm michelle griego. >> and i'm kenny choi. let's get a look at the high temperatures here. roberta? this morning at 9:00 in the los angeles area, it was already in the low 90s and the air quality has taken a hit n and around our bay area, we're not going to see the record heat as they are to the south. it's already 80 in fremont. it's the mid-80s in concord, clayton, walnut creek and fairfield approaching 90 degrees. along the seashore, temperatures in the 60s and 70s and topping out later today into the 90s and 70s and 80s to the north. we have more details and we'll up the temperatures considerably. we'll talk about that later in this newscast. as temperatures creep up, the threat of wildfires is becoming more of a reality for many communitys throughout the state. kpix 5's kiet do on why the el nino storms earlier have

created a challenge for firefighters. >> reporter: it's the first day of summer at cal fire headquarters at morgan hill. it's been so dry for so long that the way they see it, fire season never ends, and fire season now is pretty much every day. the sherpa fire in southern california is nearly 8000 acres and 54% containment. over the next couple days, crews from northern california will be getting ready to deploy to help in southern california. cal fire said after years of drought and one season of heavy rain from el nino has added to the amount of fuel that can burn. they have already seen bigger fire this is year. >> we are seeing activations and fires that go well beyond 3 or 4 days, and that tells me that we're later into what we consider a normal season and that has a lot to do with very significant dead components that we have to the wildland right now in california. >> reporter: jim crawford with

downtown orlando as the names of each victim were read allowed. people said that it helped them focus on healing and moving on. following the shooting in orlando, the senate is set to vote on legislation aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of terrorists. democrats have a proposal to stop people from buying guns if they're on the no fly list or terrorist watch list as well as expanded background checks for firearm sales made online and at gun shows. republicans worry that people could wrongly end up on the list. their plan would require the fbi to get a court order to stop the sale of guns to a suspected terrorist. >> provides due process for the good people and gives law enforcement the ability where they can conduct the investigations, and it won't blow when they're doing. >> how deeply embedded are members of the senate and the house to the national rifle

the public due to security persons. a push from san francisco businesses and community leaders to reconfigure the bus only transit lanes. the sf mta created bus-only lanes to keep the bus routes on time. but the businesses say this is hurting their bottom line and they want the city to make a, quote, radical shift in the program. santa clara leaders are calling for a $950 billion bond measure for affordable housing, geared to people in the county who are low income, homeless, or disabled. the board of supervisors is set to vote to put the measure on the ballot. a bay area city is on track to boost minimum wage to $15 an hour to account for the high cost of living.
