[ laughter ] and it's decision day in the u.k. brits cast their vote in the brexit battle. bookies have made their bets. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. overnight an extraordinary, tense, and surreal scene played out on the floor of the house of representatives. a democratic sit-in entered its second day in a dramatic effort to force a vote on gun control. more than 200 democrats demanded a vote. the standoff, reminiscent of a '60s-style protest, included chanting and singing on the house floor. ♪ we shall overcome

♪ >> weijia jiang is at the capitol with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. unlike in the senate, filibusters are not permitted in the house. the democrats sat in for just about 16 hours. the republicans launched a plan to wrap up legislative business so they could move to adjourn the session which happened at 3:15 a.m. some democrats left, vowing to continue the fight next month. others remained on the floor, a sort of exclamation point to an already stunning day. house republicans sought to get back to legislative business overnight. despite the unprecedented democratic sit-in taking place on the floor. lawmakers shouted down house speaker paul ryan and continued to demand a vote on the no fly, no buy bill, aimed at prohibiting anyone on a terror watch list from buying a gun.

>> we'll be here all night, as long as it takes. >> rise up, democrats! rise up, americans! >> reporter: lawmakers led by georgia representative john lewis took over the chamber shortly before noon wednesday. >> newtown, charleston, orlando -- what is the tipping point? are we blind? >> reporter: speaker ryan called the sit-in a publicity stunt and said there will be no vote on gun legislation. >> we're not going to take away a citizen's constitutional rights without due process. >> reporter: the tv cameras inside the house chamber are controlled by the speaker of the house. as the sit-in started, ryan shut down the cameras. the rest of the contentious and emotional debate played out on social media. >> radical islam -- >> reporter: as the night continued, democrats dug in. >> if you don't think the bill is right, come down here and tell us why!

controversial e-mails had been hacked by foreign governments. >> we can't hand over our government to someone whose deepest, darkest secrets may be in the hands of our enemies. >> reporter: he lobbed personal insults. >> she's a world-class liar. >> reporter: he even accused her of crimes. >> hillary clinton has perfected the politics of personal profit and even theft. >> reporter: trump also criticized her plan for syrian refugees -- >> hillary clinton supports a radical 550% increase in syrian refugees coming into the united states. >> reporter: that number is correct, but some of his claims were questionable at best. for example -- >> she refuses to acknowledge the threat posed by radical islam. >> reporter: last week, she did just that. >> to me, radical jihadism, islamism, i think they mean the same thing. i'm happy to say either. >> reporter: chip reid, cbs news, new york. during a speech in north carolina, clinton responded to

trump with more criticism of her own. >> right away, he lashed out on twitter with outlandish lies and conspiracy theories. he did the same in his speech today. think about it -- he's going after me personally because he has no answers on the substance -- [ cheers ] >> clinton says trump hates it when anyone points out how hollow his sales pitch is. one of the original prisoners at the u.s. military prison at guantanamo bay, cuba, has been relocated to montenegro. he had been held at gitmo for 14 years. abdel ah-regadi was found to no longer pose a significant threat to the united states. 79 prisoners remain at gitmo. 29 have been cleared for rele e release. the body of a family member whose sailboat is missing off the coast of florida has been recovered. the family set sail sunday and

ran into a storm with six-foot seas about 30 miles to the south. they were traveling to ft. myers to repair their boat. the coast guard also recovered debris from the boat. ace kimberly, two teenage sons, and a teenage daughter were on the boat when it disappeared. >> we still have three persons out there that we're trying desperate three locate, and we still have hope for that. >> the family had lived on the boat for about a year. this morning, severe weather is making its way through the midwest. damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes expected. a funnel cloud was spotted in the chicago area. tornado watches are posted in illinois, indiana, and ohio. another tornado hit central illinois damaging at least four homes. and firefighters were a bate

san gabriel complex fire in southern california. the san gabriel fire is actually two adjacent fires. as of last night, it was 15% contained. and some evacuation orders had been lifted. no homes have been lost, but there have been a few close calls. overseas now, polls are open in britain for a vote on whether that country should leave the european union. britain has been a member of the e.u. for 43 years where people and trade move freely. if british voters opt out, there could be some serious economic ramifications affecting trade in europe and the u.s. mark phillips reports. >> reporter: as political battles go, this one started nasty and then got ugly. >> stop telling lies! >> reporter: stability had long flushed down the river by the time the battle of the thames took place between those who want britain to leave the european union and others who wanted to stay.

>> you're a fraud! >> reporter: those have been some of the polite exchanges. when some leave europe campaigners unveiled a poster showing imaginary hordes flooding britain -- >> it hasn't been project fair, it's been project hate as far as integration's concerned. [ applause ] >> reporter: somewhere among the na name-calling, an argument is taking place. britain does by far the bulk of its trade with europe. every major business group wants britain to stay in, along with every major international financial body and every ally britain has including the u.s. the outers say the e.u. is holding britain back with its stifling regulations, unelected bureaucracy, and high costs. the opinion polls say the result is too close to call. and lest you ask the bookees who are usually right.

democrats who staged a sit-in on the house floor over gun control say they've crossed just one bridge. congressman john lewis who led the protest and is a veteran of the civil rights movement talked about the ongoing battle. >> a little more than 50 years ago, i crossed the bridge not just one time, but it took us

on the cbs "money watch" now, a car recall is on the fast track after an actor's death, and how facebook's ceo likes to maintain his privacy. jill wagner's at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> reporter: good morning. stocks on wall street are in a bit of a holding pattern as investors wait for the outcome of today's referendum on britain's membership in the european union. the dow finished 48 points lower. the s&p fell 3. the nasdaq dipped 10 points. fee at chrysler is speeding up the recall of cars with onfusing gear shifts. on sunday 2015 jeep grand cherokee killed "star trek" actor anton everyone yelchin. his jeep was among those recalled in april after drivers complained they had trouble telling if the transmission was in park after they stopped. the electric tarmaker tesla made a $2.8 billion offer to buy solar city. elon musk is the largest shareholder in both companies.
