as one of the last barriers of gender based service. and weijia jang on what happened when a planned drill on a military base led to a real lockdown. >> reporter: joint base andrews went into lockdown on reports of an active shooter on site. first responders rushed to the scene, thought to be unfolding at the base's medical facility. that's when the situation got confusing. >> we haven't heard reports of additional shots being fired or actually if any shots were fired. >> reporter: it turned out the base had a drill scheduled for this morning. a training exercise for dealing with an active shooter situation. for more than an hour, responders evacuated the facility trying to find out whether there was a real situation or whether someone had mistaken the drill for an actual emergency. even after the "all clear" was begin, several troubling

the force. a warning to people this independence day. anne makovec on how san francisco plans to keep illegal fireworks under control. >> reporter: as san francisco prepares for one of the biggest parties of the year, your fireworks options are limited. enjoy the pro show along the embarcadero because no other fireworks are legal in the city. not even those dubbed safe and sane. the danger firefighters say is real. >> including the loss of fingers, the loss of limbs, and the loss of life. >> reporter: selling or using illegal fireworks could lead to fines or jail time. the san francisco police want you to call them if see anybody lighting off any kind of fireworks. and they want to remind you that those reports can be made anonymously. the city sanctioned show starts at 9:30 with fireworks from barges near fisherman's wharf. there will be extra officers on patrol.

attacked in her richmond ho. betty soskin works at "rosie the riveter nation a 94-year-old park ranger honored by president obama is recovering after being attacked in her richmond home. betty soskin works at the national historical park in richmond. police say on monday night, a man broke into her home and punched her several times before taking off with some of her personal items. soskin says the thief took the commemorative coin given to her by president obama last year for being the oldest park ranger in the u.s. we are just getting word, east bay congressman mark desaulnier will work with the white house to get her a replacement. contra costa animal services is looking into how two dogs were mistakenly euthanized. one happened june 18 involving a pit bull. the agency says at the time, it was working with the rescue organization to help save the female dog. it's looking into the death of a dog named tommy. the agency will try to

are truant... and more parents are taking an active n well, today's tip of the day is going to be is with red nap cabbage. i like the color of this. more light purple than red. it's called red napa cabbage. selection and storage is very important. use it like regular napa cabbage. it's great in so many different ways especially in a stir fry. let's talk about selection. when you buy them, nice and white, they are supposed to be white and fresh. it's got to feel nice and fresh. now, the leaves get darker purple or darker red at the top. heavy for the size and give it a nice squeeze to make sure it doesn't break apart. where it's been cut, free from any browning what so far. at home in the refrigerator as soon as you can. storage not too long three to four days at the most. don't store them for too long. red napa cabbage, it's just a beautiful vegetable. and i'm tony tantillo, your fresh grocer. and always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy. fewer students are truant

and more parents are taking an active role in their children's education. it's all thanks to an oakland- based nonprofit. sharon chin introduces us to this the woman who leads it. she is this week's jefferson award winner. reporter: parents and kids learn computer basics at this family resource center on the campus of new highland and rise academy in oakland. it's just one example of how chris stoner-mertz empowers low- income families. >> for every family we can do that for, i have made a difference in somebody's life. it gives me meaning. >> this great partnership. >> reporter: chris, a licensed social worker, is the president and ceo of lincoln. the 133-year-old nonprofit began as an orphanage, but it's evolved into a more comprehensive program that builds strong families and keeps children in school. chris has led its transformation in the last decade. she moved the headquarters from the oakland hills to west oakland and put staff members in more than 30 schools and child development centers. >> we needed to be near where the children and families are

if we were truly going to serve them effectively. you love math? >> reporter: as chris added more programs in low income neighborhoods, lincoln tripled the number of children it served to 4,000 kids in alameda and contra costa counties. its wide ranging services for parents include support groups so mothers like shante abner can de-stress. >> i'm able to let it out, let it go and go about the day. >> reporter: for kids, field trips, tutoring and creative science classes changed jontae pace's view that school was boring. what did you think about school after that? >> that it was really fun. >> reporter: some students have jumped a whole reading level. another program saw 90% of the worst absentees improve their attendance. at the family resource center, coordinator annie flores says lives are changing. >> we have improved our truancy by about 5 to 6%, which might not seem large; but in urban
