grenades. it's not clear exactly how many hostages were taken. an official on scene says there are injuries on side and negotiations under way. some kitchen staff that managed to escape say that the attackers shouted, god is great. the restaurant is popular with locals and foreigners. the u.s. embassy has accounted for all its workers. we'll continue to monitor this situation and bring you any new developments. to the south bay now, where a little boy holding his mother's hand was hit and killed by a car in a mall parking lot. kpix 5's maria medina is live at oakridge mall in san jose with the latest developments. >> reporter: a couple of hours ago we learned the little boy's name was [ non-english name ] just six years old of san jose. the accident happened behind me where those orange marks are. state police calling it an accident. it happened around 9:30 last night here in the parking lot

of oakridge mall. police say a car moving slowly crossed paths with a family of three and this is what happened next. >> a mother was holding the hand of her 6-year-old son and they were walking in the parking lot with another sibling when a mercedes-benz came out and struck the family. police say the driver was cooperative. they don't believe that drugs and alcohol are a factor. the little boy whose name is aniket gadre, his mother was hit also and will recover. the boy died it the hospital. police are investigating. maria medina, kpix 5. a person in a wheelchair was seriously injured after a van drove on the sidewalk on a busy street in san francisco. it happened at 7 a.m. this morning. no word on the extent of the

injuries. police say that the driver of the van is cooperating with the investigation. new at noon, governor brown has signed the bulk of the measures in a sweeping gun control package. one of the bills bans high capacity gun magazines in our state. that includes any device that holds more than 10 rounds. another bill signed by the governor would require people to have background checks in order to purchase ammunition. the governor did veto five of the 11 bills. one would have limited people from buying more than one long gun in 30 days. workers in a handful of bay area cities are getting a raise going up to $13 an hour in several cities. jackie ward breaks down the numbers. >> reporter: this is just step one. as of today minimum wage goes from $12.25 an hour to $13. mayor ed lee says this is a reason to celebrate. >> we all feel for working

people because it's hard in our expenses expensive city to survive without a decent wage. >> reporter: thanks to prop j which was approved in 2014 minimum wage in san francisco is on the way to being $15 an hour. paul is a home care worker and will directly benefit from the raise. >> $15 an hour minimum wage increase will surely ongoing-ly help me do my endeavors. >> reporter: the owner of a business in the ferry building is okay with the minimum wage being raised but says it doesn't affect her business. >> yeah. i think it's fine. san francisco is an expensive place to live and we have always started people above the minimum wage anyway. our economy is doing really well so i'm not sure who it's going to affect, um, negatively. >> reporter: critics argue that higher wages may force businesses to increase the cost of products, give workers less hours or even lay some people off. step 2 goes into effect a year

from today when minimum wage goes to $14 an hour. it will be $15 an hour by the year 2018. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. also taking effect today california's stricter child vaccine law preventing school districts from admitting new students without evidence every vaccines or valid medical excuse. parents can no longer refuse to vaccinate their kids for personal or religious beliefs. arraignment today for a man accused of stabbing a stranger in a santa rosa movie theater. police delonte hart a homeless man entered the roxy theater wednesday night after staff let him in to use the restroom. they say hart sat behind a man and then stabbed him several times. the victim is expected to recover. no indication that they knew each other. hart is a person of interest in the homicide of a homeless man in santa rosa. that man was stabbed 50 times just blocks from the movie

theater. mountain view police found a world war ii era explosive this morning in an abandoned building. it led to a evacuation of several businesses on hope street but the bomb squad checked it and determined it is not active. this man is behind bars for allegedly burglarizing a laundromat in milpitas. it happened in the early- morning hours yesterday. police say that 36-year-old made a hole in the wall in the ventilation system and was trying to steal money from the coin machine. he was booked into jail for burglary, burglary tools and parole violations. new information about the man involved in the first-ever fatal crash with a self-driving car. joshua brown had posted several videos on youtube showing off his tesla's autopilot feature. tesla says he was in that mode when he hit a tractor-trailer that turned into his path last may. driving records obtained by the "associated press" show that he

had been cited for speeding eight times in six years. federal safety investigators are looking into the crash. tesla says the car's cameras failed to distinguish the white side of the big rig against a brightly lit sky and didn't put the brakes on. there's more fallout from brick meeting with attorney general loretta lynch. lynch will accept the recommendation of career prosecutors on whether to bring charges related to hillary clinton's email scandal. the development comes amid growing calls for lynch to recuse herself from the case. she has been under fire since her meeting with president clinton on monday. >> don't have a role in those findings in coming up with those findings or making those recommendations as to how to go forward. i'll be briefed on it and i will be accepting their recommendations. >> presumptive republican nominee donald trump said that he was quote, flabbergasted by the meeting. he called it sneaky and

in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. and it is not just the roads that will be crowded. an estimated 600,000 californians will travel by air. just in time for the holiday weekend, people hoping to cross the golden gate bridge will now have to pay 25 cents more. it's $7.50. if you have fastrak you get a dollar discount. starting today it will cost more to park at caltrain stations. the daily parking fees going up from $5 to $5.50. monthly permits are going from 50 to $55. and no more free parking at the belmont station. it will be $5.50 per day there. to new york now where preparations are under way for the macy's 4th of july fireworks display. they are setting up fire barges in the east river. this is the 40th anniversary of the show. it takes a year of planning to pull it off. some of your neighbors may be lighting off their own
