they cheated a little bit, eager to get in position. >> the purpose of the parade is to put on a party for the town of danville. >> reporter: there's certainly worse problems than throwing a party everybody wants to attend. for more than 30 years, james has been making sure his family has a front row seat for the fourth of july parade. >> people always try to get in to your spots. that's why i stayed here. if i didn't stay here, this spot would be taken right away. >> reporter: celebrating the 4th has become serious business in danville. families take out prime real estate hours, sometimes days before the first marching band cues up. >> they have that spot for so many years and they like the spot. >> reporter: it doesn't take long for those new to town to get schooled in old ways. >> if you don't stake out a spot, you'll be standing in the back, holding your kids up over

your head most of the parade. >> reporter: in recent years the city has frowned upon people chalking out or putting tape to reserve spots. the cleanup was too costly and wasted too much water. they've tried with admittingly mixed results to make sure the sidewalk doesn't get clogged with chairs. >> at 6:00 officially they can claim their spot. they can put their chairs out a little early if they sit in the chairs and wit till 6 p.m. -- and wait till 6 p.m. that's become tradition. >> reporter: a tradition in danville as american as apple pie, fireworks, and the fourth of july. >> securing your position and securing your chairs is pretty serious business. we have seen people chaining up their chairs just to discourage any mischief makers from moving them overnight. the parade itself is scheduled to start tomorrow at 9 a.m. with an estimated 40,000 people in attendance. in danville, devin fehely, kpix 5. >> what people will go through for a front row seat. pleasant hill's independence day parade will proceed as

planned after a sinkhole nearly forced a last minute reroute. city workers had to scramble to repair this mess. a water main broke leaving a gaping hole in the middle of contra costa boulevard friday night. some nearby businesses had to close saturday because they didn't have any water. crews worked around the clock to patch the pipe. they filled the hole and finished up about an hour ago just in time for the parade to march by tomorrow. three people were hurt when two ride share cars collided in san francisco this afternoon. police say one of the drivers turned in to the path of the other near eddie and franklin. both were carrying passengers. one of the drivers went to the hospital to be checked out but we're told all of the injuries are minor. the holiday weekend is off to a deadly start on california highways. the chp has already responded to at least seven deadly accidents around the state. officers will be out in full force through tomorrow, looking for speeders and drunk drivers. they'll also be keeping an eye

out for seatbelt violations and people texting behind the wheel. 26 people died in crashes on california highways last independence day weekend. another 339 were injured and more than 900 drivers were arrested for dui. students and staff will gather at uc berkeley to remember a classmate killed in friday's terror attack in bangladesh. a vigil will be held for 19-year-old tarishi jain. she was interning in the capitol of dhaka for the summer. she began her studies at cal last year with the intention of majoring in economics. those who knew her say she was smart, ambitious, and that she had a big heart. two other victims of the terrorist attack attended college in the u.s. as well. hussein was a junior at emory's business school. abinta kabir was visiting family when she was killed.

it left 20 captive dead and isis claiming responsibility. tonight we've learned a man who drowned off the coast of massachusetts last night lived part-time in san francisco. he's been identified as 32-year-old jesse lubier. he was visiting family in quincy when a boat ride took a tragic turn. police said his boat was just 100 feet offshore when a mechanical problem prompted him to jump in the water. witnesses say he was trying to free the boat from some kind of entanglement but after a second attempt he never came back up. mountain view police are trying to figure out what led to the stabbing of a young man in a city park. here's a look at the crime scene last night. it happened in the park just before 10:00. we're told the victim was a juvenile but no word yet on his exact age or current condition. >> when we responded, we found a juvenile male victim with at least one stab wound.

he was rushed to the hospital where he's currently being treated. >> so far no arrests. police in oakland are investigating a pair of double shootings that have been deadly. it all started yesterday afternoon when a man and woman were shot and killed near mcarthur and 35th. about six hours later two men were fatally shot on sunset court. so far no arrests in either case. the oakland city council is set to vote this week on expanding renter protections. the proposal would require landlords to petition for certain rent increases. it would also expand the powers of the city's rent board and provide relocation assistance when a tenant is forced out. the meeting starts at 5:30 on tuesday at oakland city hall. meanwhile, one marin county woman says she's got a solution that can help ease the bay area's housing crisis. kpix 5's mark kelly shows us her idea might soon become state law. >> reporter: a tour of rachel guinness' apartment takes about 10 seconds. >> i love it.

are already underway in one area c it may be independence eve but fourth of july celebrations are already underway in one bay area city. sharon chin is live at the red oak victory ship in richmond. what's on tap for tonight? >> happy 3rd. the ship is decked out in red, white, and blue. they're starting with dinner and ending with what they hope will be a great view of the fireworks. about 400 to 500 people are arriving to celebrate independence day onboard the ship. typically richmond marks the holiday a day early so there's less competition with other bay area events. after a barbecue dinner tonight the crowd will catch a rare display, a flyover by a p518

mustang, a high performance version of the world war ii fighter plane. today's festivities help restore it to operation status. it's the last surviving military ship built in the kaiser richmond shipyards during world war ii. >> this is our way of saying thank you to the country. we're trying to preserve the ship. celebrating the ship and the country and all that comes with it on this day is why we're doing this. >> later tonight the crowd can stay and watch the fireworks. this morning we caught up with the folks who are preparing the boat for the evening spectacular. i'm told the best spot is right there on deck, however, we'll see if these clouds clear out. in san francisco crews spent a lot of today setting up for the fireworks celebration. this morning they brought tubes

business today and customers think the products they sell aren't the worst part of the holiday. >> i'm not too crazy about guns getting fired off on the fourth of july and new year's eve. these here, i think it's kind of ridiculous to not be able to buy these all over. >> san bruno, pacifica, union city, newark, and dublin also allow the sale of safe and sane fireworks but you could face a thousand-dollar fine and even jail time for setting them off in cities where they're not allowed. no surprise we're going to transit to fire danger. a brush fire that brushed up a hillside near san bernardino ripped through several homes before firefighters finally got that under control. three of the houses were destroyed. two others heavily damaged. firefighters doused the remains of smoldering homes. three people including two firefighters suffered smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion and they don't know what caused that fire. here in northern california firefighters are trying to prevent another blaze from spreading to homes in calaveras.

the appaloosa fire has burned 400 acres since yesterday afternoon. that one is 15% contained tonight. no evacuations in place but the fire has knocked out power to more than a thousand homes. officials say it started when somebody working on their breaker box produced a spark. the spark ignited a fire. that person could face up to a year in jail. evacuations still in place in el dorado and placer counties. the trailhead fires burned 4,000 acres since last tuesday. this one is 12% contained. no homes or structures have been damaged. containment lines did hold overnight but the fire is moving east along the middle fork of the american river. no word yet on what caused that fire. a bay area congressman wants to make it worth your while to earthquake-proof your home. mike thompson has coauthored a bill that would make the money tax fay. california's so called brace and bolt program provides small grants to help homeowners pay for seismic retrofits such as

adding to the foundation and bracing. right now homeowners who qualify are taxed by the feds. representative thompson hopes by easing the tax burden, more people will take advantage to strengthen their home. a young mountain lion got a little too comfortable in this orville neighborhood friday. soon after neighbors noticed the furry tail dangling from a tree, officials were called in. they shot it with a tranquilizer. but it kept moving. after it eventually fell asleep, officials watered the mountain lion down to keep it cool before releasing it back in the wild. >> they're cute when they're asleep. when they wake up, look out. cloudy skies only by the shoreline and ploest -- and most of the bay area at this time. sunny skies. but not here. you're looking at the clouds coming toward us. heading in to san francisco and fairly light traffic heading to the viewpoint in the opposite side. right now the number is 82

degrees at concord. oakland, 65. livermore at 84. plenty warm inland. along the shoreline, san francisco, it's just 60 degrees right now. and a beach hazard statement that was posted by the national weather service yesterday is in effect through monday night for a rip current hazard. despite the fact there aren't any big waves building out there, nevertheless there are hypothermia concerns for people getting pulled out in the ocean. with water temperatures only in the 50s. that advisory is for the entire shoreline. all the way down to santa cruz county. unusually cool temperatures will continue in some spots. 10 degrees below average. for this, the first week of july. high pressure well to our south. low pressure well to the north. but in between, that's giving us a pretty good onshore push of the fog, low clouds, and sea breeze. so the forecast is calling for cool to mild weather in the bay area. 83 degrees isn't cool. but it's relatively cool. and where we were a week ago when numbers inland were well

over 100 degrees. not going to be true for a while. with a stronger onshore flow it will not be as warm with temperatures shaving a degree or two off tomorrow. nothing dramatic but it's going to remain on the mild to cool side. the giants are taking on the rockies tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. the weather, fair and breezy. 62 degrees at game time at about midday. futurecast shows low clouds pack in the shoreline and penetrate well inland, through the carquinez strait. going to be overcast tomorrow morning. then the clouds pull back to the shoreline. plenty of sunshine except right at the coast. we'll go with stratus quo, the usual low clouds in the morning. the clouds thick enough and low enough that we're squeezing out some drizzle and you'll wake up to wet decks and sidewalks during the shoreline. temperatures remain about the same. coastal clouds for the fourth of july. but if you go inland, there's

kind of explosive in central park. explosion was heard two blocks away where mourners were arriving for the funeral of holocaust survivor elie wiesel. the 18-year-old man from virginia was climbing on rocks with two friends when something he stepped on suddenly exploded. >> it was a very loud explosion. it sounded kind of like a canon went off, like maybe a fourth of july festivity. and out of respect to the young gentleman there, he had a very, very severe leg injury. very severe leg injury. it's a very graphic scene. >> just walking down the rocks and stepped on something. there was a divot in the ground. looks like a divot where there was an explosion. >> investigators don't think the explosive was terror related. they're looking in to wther the device may have been a home

a nearly 26-hour sit-in to protest the lack of congressional action on gun control in the wake of several mass shootings. they're saying it doesn't go far enough. despite the opposition, the gop majority is expected to pass the bill. ahead of the vote, bay area congresswoman jackie speer will lead a sit-in tomorrow. outside the fox theater in redwood city. speer is no stranger to gun violence. in 1978 she was shot five times during a fact finding mission in to the jonestown cult in guyana. her boss, representative leo ryan and four others died in the shoot ing. oakland could soon be a step closer to creating an independent police commission. the move stems from a sex scandal involving opd officers and an underage prostitute. it would also have the power to

hire and fire the police chief and the authority to discipline and terminate officers. but voters would have to approve it first. the city council is set to vote tuesday on whether to put a charter amendment on the november ballot. if you live near the oakland international airport, get used to hearing that a lot more. the airport will be closing one of its runways for about a week and a half to get some maintenance done and that will change the approach pattern overhead, sending a lot more air traffic over the surrounding cities. across the bay at sfo, they're working on getting flights moving faster. on tuesday the airport commission will get a briefing on new technologies aimed at improving on time performance for arrivals and departures. trucks like these will be taking aim at mosquitos in the south bay this week. they'll be fogging in santa clara county starting thursday night to try to cut down on the pests carrying west nile virus. there were nearly 800 cases of west nile in california last

the bot purchase tickets on retail websites like stubhub where they can be marked up many times the original price. >> the secondary ticket market is like the wild west. >> reporter: new york attorney general eric schneiderman helped lead the charge. ticket bot violations were handled with a fine. >> we're talking about thousands of dollars worth of fines for people who can make millions of dollars. >> if governor cuomo signs the bill in to law, offenders could face jail time. >> white collar crime, you can deter. these people do plan ahead. they don't want to be slapped with an indictment. >> ticket bots are only one piece of the puzzle. promotional giveaways and even artists holding back tickets to inflate their prices also contribute to a lack of available seats. >> one good thing is if you wait till the day of the concert or the day before, ticket prices collapse. it works often. they've shown it works often. maybe not to hamilton but neil

to take on the giants. if you're going to go to the game tomorrow, you'll find it fair and breezy at the ball yard. temperature, 62 degrees. futurecast shows low clouds blossom overnight. 8:00 tomorrow morning, more of us will wake up to low cloudiness than we've seen lately. it will also burn back to the shoreline fairly rapidly by noon. unless you're right at the shore, you'll start out the day with drizzle. it will be sunny, midmorning. nice day for the alameda county floor. marin county fair, sunny as well and 70 degrees by the time the doors open at 11 a.m. high temperature forecast, we're looking for things to be cooler than average. 61 in the city for the battle between the sun and the low clouds. 78 in concord. san jose, the same. 78 degrees. morgan hill, 80. numbers will be only near 60 degrees and drizzle the closer you get to the shore. in the east bay, numbers will by in the mid 80s in the warmer

spots. antioch and pittsburgh. brentwood, a little bit warmer than that. in the 680 corridor, nice day for the north bay. temperatures, upper 60s, lower 70s and low clouds start out the day but tomorrow sunny in ukiah, lakeport and clear lake. the numbers will be near 90 degrees. extended forecast, we're going to be looking for almost nothing but sun inland from now through next weekend. the numbers will be cooler than usual. we're just going to go with stratus quo, the usual low clouds in the morning, clearing in the afternoon and as for the fireworks, the better inland you go the more success you'll have. near san francisco, we'll see. ♪ to you

mo ting women finally tonight, it's no secret the nfl is predominantly run by men. but recently more pro teams are putting more women in the leadership lineup. >> one of the most storied franchises in the nfl. the 49ers. >> reporter: on the field the 49ers have 11 players on defense. but off the field, this woman, 34-year-old hannah gordon, is the one protecting the red and gold. she's the team's general council. >> i don't find it so much intimidating as exciting. >> reporter: anything that touches the team or the stadium has to go through her, and it's not an eight-hour a day punch the clock job. >> you spend a 9:00 to 5:00 in meetings then you have to start doing work. >> reporter: she was a sports writer for the daily bruin and carried on with jobs at cal and the raiders. >> at the time i thought i

wanted to go in to sports media. >> reporter: she found a men mentor with the general manager, amy trask. >> she wants to be the best at what she does which is what i wanted to do too. >> reporter: she graduated from stanford law in 2008 and went on to work in the nfl. her first big case, the nfl lockout. >> it's not a good place to be in collective bargaining but it's also a sort of once in a 30-year type of experience that you can get working on something that kind of complex and interesting. >> reporter: she earned the nickname queen of the lockout. >> it gave me exposure to a lot of different clubs. it gave me just a ton of experience in a very short period of time. and probably on some level led to him giving me a call one day to ask me if i'd like to come

interview here. >> people are going to look at your story like oh, my gosh, she came from graduating stanford lockout, -- graduating from stanford law school, queen of the lockout. you had your own share of setbacks. >> i was an associate and when they laid off 20% of the associates i was one of them. usually we only want to talk about our successes but we learn a lot from our failures and learn to be resilient. >> reporter: that grit runs in the family. her mother is the former president of the oakland city council. >> she once asked me at like 10 p.m., hey, do you want to get up at 2 a.m. and drive over to this street where the neighbors have been driving so we can see what it sounds like? i was like no, i have no interest in that. she wanted to experience for herself what her constituents were going through. she wanted to be able to empathize with people. >> reporter: she's a leader in

a league that doesn't exactly have a great track record with women. >> anything you have to say about these charges? >> in your line of work, dealing with the issues you're dealing with, some involve player behavior. do you ever, because you are a woman, and a lot of these issues sometimes involve domestic abuse, do you ever go, man, really, again? >> to me, i think it's a huge privilege to have a seat at the table to even talk about those issues and it's really an opportunity for all of us because these are the things we face in our team are the same things that all of our communities are facing, that all our families are facing. >> reporter: even though hannah is often the only woman in many of her meetings, she never once felt like she was there because of her gender. >> i want to be not the best female lawyer in the nfl but the best lawyer. >> reporter: elizabeth cook, kpix 5. >> the 49ers are trying to bring more women like hannah in to their organization. they recently started the fellowship which gives young women an opportunity to start
