city. captioning funded by cbs it's monday, july 4th, 2016. this is the "cbs morning news." a suicide bombing near a u.s. diplomatic mission in saudi arabia follows a string of deadly weekend terrorist attacks. the fbi interviews hillary clinton, as the investigation into her private e-mail appears to be coming to a close. and more than two dozen wildfires burn out west, eating up acres and burning down homes. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green.

we begin with a new bombing attack overseas this morning. this time near a u.s. consulate in saudi arabia. a suicide bomber parked his car about 65 feet from the consulate in jeddah and then set off the bomb. the explosion injured two security officers nearby. no u.s. personnel were hurt. so far, there has been no claim of responsibility. today's bombing comes after a series of deadly attacks in recent days all with possible links to isis. the latest yesterday in baghdad killed at least 142 people. a deadly attack in turkey last week was connected to the islamic militants. isis claimed responsibility for another attack in bangladesh. but one government official in bangladesh says a local militant group is to blame. johnathan vigliotti reports. >> reporter: the first explosion rocked baghdad central business district engulfing an entire shopping mall in flames. against an orange sky, dazed shoppers and first responders sifted through twisted and

charred wreckage for any survivors. the attack happened shortly after midnight sunday morning as families were eating dinner after passing during the day for the holy month of ramadan. police blamed the carnage of a massive bomb in the back of a pickup truck. people wouldn't recognize their families who were engulfed in the fire, said this man who managed to escape. police said many of the victims were children. the islamic state was quick to claim responsibility. it is the third attack in three countries linked to the group in less than a week. on friday in bangladesh, the islamic state claims their militants struck a popular restaurant and took dozens of foreigners hostage. three students studying at an american university, including abita kabi, from miami, were among the 30 people who were

killed. in istanbul's airport, killing more than 40 people. 13 suspects were arrested in raids and taken to court today, as police unravel what appears to be a growing terror network. just over a week ago, isis lost the city of fallujah to iraqi forces in what was seen as an embarrassing blow. this week's violence suggests that while the islamic state may be losing on the battlefield, they are still capable of inflicting major carnage in cities around the world. johnathan vigliotti, cbs news, london. sources tell cbs news the fbi is nearing the end of its investigation into hillary clinton's use of a private e-mail server while secretary of state. agents questioned clinton for hours over the weekend. hena daniels is here in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as the fbi reaches its final phase into the investigation, clinton's likely opponent donald trump is attacking her honesty or a lack thereof according to him with the american people.

this, of course, comes days after the controversial tarmac meeting between bill clinton and attorney general loretta lynch. hillary clinton broke her silence over the weekend, hours after speaking with federal investigators about the private e-mail server she used during her time as secretary of state. >> i never received nor sent any material that was marked classified. i will continue to, you know, be as forthcoming as i can. >> reporter: the voluntary meeting, which lasted three and a half hours on saturday, took place just days after the controversial tarmac meeting between bill clinton and attorney general loretta lynch in phoenix. >> no one wants to see any untoward, you know, conclusions drawn and they said, you know, they would not do it again. >> reporter: in a series of tweets yesterday, donald trump blasted his likely democratic opponent, saying, quote, crooked hillary knew her husband wanted to meet with lynch to work out a deal.

other democrats came to clinton's defense. >> she understands she has got to earn people's trust and she is going to work very, very hard to do that. >> reporter: the latest quinnipiac university poll shows registered voters find trump honest and trustworthy than clinton. both have their sights sets on the battleground state of north carolina this week. clinton will appear at a rally in charlotte alongside president obama for the first time tomorrow. while trump holds a rally the same day in raleigh. attorney general lynch said she would accept whatever recommendations prosecutors and fbi investigators bring charges against clinton in connection to her e-mail scandal. >> hena daniels in new york, thank you very much. donald trump is facing criticism this morning for a controversial tweet he sent out over the weekend. the presumptive gop presidential nominee posted this image featuring hillary clinton that showed a six-point star

resembling the star of david on a pile of money. the image appeared earlier on a white supremacist website. trump has since deleted the tweet. trump also tweeted it's impossible for the fbi not to recommend charges against clinton for her use of her private e-mail server. it comes as former president bill clinton and attorney general loretta lynch say they made a mistake when they met privately last week. the two say the meeting was innocent but regret it amid the fbi investigation into bill clinton's wife. we will have much more on the investigation into hillary clinton's e-mails coming up on "cbs this morning." there are a nearly 70 wildfires now burning this morning across several western states. there are at least a dozen major fires in california alone, including one fire that has burned several homes to the ground. mireya villarreal reports. >> reporter: in a matter of minutes, flames raced up the side of this hill in san bernardino, destroying at least four homes. this man and his girlfriend managed to escape before their

home went up. >> she ran up to the window to see what the dog is barking at. sure enough, flames are rattling the windows. >> reporter: nearly ten acres of drought stricken land were scorched before the firefighters were able to get the fire under control. taylor owens home was in their home for three generations. >> yeah, it sucks. we are upset. obviously, i'm not going to be able to get back a lot of the memories and stuff like that. >> reporter: farther north in curran county, the deer fire has burned 1,700 acres and threatening 300 homes. officials are worried the fire will intensify as it approaches an area filled with dead and dying trees. this is the same county that lost 150 homes in a devastating wildfire nearly two weeks ago. as 4,800 firefighters continue to battle 12 major wildfires across california, safety officials are warning about the dangers of illegal fireworks. more than 300,000 pounds of illegal fireworks have been

confiscated in los angeles county alone. l.a. city fire chief says fireworks could add more fuel to these fires. >> with us being in the fifth year of a drought, we are extremely concerned about the potential for brush fires or other types of fires caused by fireworks, so we urge you to please attend a professional fireworks show. >> reporter: more fires are reported on the fourth of july than any other day out of the year. nearly half of those fires are caused by fireworks. mireya villarreal, cbs news, los angeles. flood warnings remain in effect this morning in central and southern kansas after heavy storms this weekend. several inches of rain caused flash flooding saturday and sunday. in wichita, firefighters rescued two adults and their child after their vehicle was swept away off a road and ended up in a creek. a teenager is recovering this morning in the hospital after being injured by a

firework in new york central park. the virginia teen stepped on the homemade explosive sunday. it happened as he and two friends were climbing rocks in the park. the teen's grandmother says doctors amputated his leg from the knee down. >> this is terrible. but for his birthday next week, he wanted a long skateboard. well, he won't have a leg. >> investigators say they do not believe the explosive is linked to terrorism. holocaust survivor and nobel laureate elie wiesel passed away this weekend. a private funeral service was held yesterday in new york city and was attended by friend and family. a public memorial is being planned. marlie hall looks back on the man's extraordinary live. >> reporter: elie wiesel's mission was to shed light on jews.
