captioning funded by cbs it's friday, july 8th, 2016. this is the "cbs morning news." breaking news. snipers target police officers in dallas during the city's protest over recent police shootings. this morning, at least five officers are dead and six others injured. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with breaking news

in dallas, texas, where at least five police officers were killed when they were ambushed by at least two snipers. the shooting began near the end of a protest over the fatal police shootings of black men in louisiana and minnesota. six other officers and a civilian were injured. police are questioning at least three alleged suspects and manuel bojorquez is in downtown dallas. what is the latest? >> reporter: some breaking news now. we are learning that the fourth suspect, a man who was hold up inside a parking garage not too far from we are has died of self-inflicted gunshot wound. he had apparently been exchanging gunfire with officers but we have learned he has now died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. as you mentioned, the gunfire erupted in downtown dallas with no warning, turning this place into a war zone and still very

much resembling one right now. officials say the intent of the shooters was to kill as many officers as possible. >> reporter: what was a peaceful protest by about 800 people turned into chaos. people marching at city hall ran for their lives as dozens of shots rang out. >> i was screaming run, run! active shooter, run, run, run! >> reporter: police say this was a coordinated attack. >> at least two snipers from elevated positions, as the protest rally march ended, began firing upon our officers. ambush style. >> reporter: as the gunfire rang out, police used their patrol cars for cover as they moved in to help wounded officers. >> we believe that the suspects

were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers from two different perches in garages in the downtown area. and planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could. >> reporter: the search for the gunmen moved through downtown from buildings to restaurants, businesses, and hotels. several of the wounded are in critical condition. one of the suspects is a woman taken into custody at the same garage where the shooting began. two others were grabbed during a traffic stop after they threw a suspicious package out the window. >> i ask everybody to focus on one thing right now, and that is dallas police officers, their families, those that are deceased, those that are in the hospital fighting for their lives. >> reporter: downtown dallas still very much an active crime scene. that is because that final suspect who apparently has shot himself now did tell police,

"the end is near." and that there were bombs scattered throughout the city. police still trying to clear all of this up right now. four of the fallen officers are with the dallas police department. one was with dallas area rapid transit. >> manuel, in the video there, you can hear the gunfire quite loud. i know you were blocks away. what did you hear and what did you see? >> reporter: i can tell you i live not too far from here. from my balcony, i could see the protesters. this was during the peaceful part of the march. several hundreds of them just marching. and then just a few minutes later, what i heard was one police car after another and it wasn't just crowd control, it was very clear that this was something else. that's when i went downstairs and immediately started trying to see what was going on and we were learning that several shots were fired. what witnesses have described as a barrage of fire, what sounded like a war zone. at that point, police were still very much not only trying to

attend to the wounded officers but trying to do crowd control and get people to safety and kept moving the perimeter back more and more once they engaged with the one suspect holed up in the parking garage and continued to exchange shots with officers. at this point, as we understand it, that suspect has killed himself, but the situation is still very fluid here in downtown dallas. >> just a massive crime scene there. manuel bojorquez in dallas, thank you so much. among those wounded by sniper fire, a woman who was with her children at last night's demonstration in dallas. her sister was waiting at the hospital where she was being treated. >> her and her boys were down at the rally. said it was a very peaceful rally and they were enjoying it and the rally was just ending. as the rally was ending and they turned to leave, they were one of the first crowds to leave, they began to hear the first gunshot and didn't think much of it, or it was just like what was that? and after that first gunshot, she heard the second gunshot and

after that, it was just a lot of gunshots. so they just came so fast and they wouldn't stop. they all began to run, scatter. she said as she started to run, she caught a bullet in the back of her right leg. she immediately jumped on one of her boys, the 15-year-old. she jumped on top to cover him on the ground as she pushed him in between two cars and the curb. her other three boys scattered and ran in opposite direction, so she lost three of her boys, didn't know where they were. she laid there. she said it was about five minutes before cops even got to her and pulled her from the area where she was because the shots were coming so fast. not even realizing she was really shot at the time. >> reporter: she was shielding her son for five minutes? >> for five minutes before anybody got to her and was able to pull her away. >> reporter: what did she tell you about that moment where she was covering her child and the shots were being fired? >> all she could think about was her other three boys, where are they at.

>> we are going to hear more from this woman and her sister. her sister has a very special message for police. one of the wounded officers is a six-year veteran of the city's transit police force. misty mcbride is being treated for two gunshot wounds at baylor university medical center. she is expected to survive. her father and her 10-year-old daughter visited her there. >> i was just happy that she was okay. that she can live on to tomorrow and that i'm just glad that she is alive, really. >> reporter: what did you say to her? >> i said that, "i love you and that i'm glad you're here." >> reporter: sir, again, tell us what happened again. >> she just realized that when she got shot, that she fell over

and turned around and started crawling back toward the car and the other officers got her and put her in the car and brought her over here. >> reporter: where was she shot and what is your daughter's name? >> it's misty mcbride and she was shot in the arm and it broke her shoulder, and she was shot in the abdomen and went in one side and out the other side. >> reporter: sir, how is she feeling? after hearing that, how is she feeling? what did she tell you? >> i don't understand what you mean. >> reporter: is she okay? >> oh, yeah. she is fine. they gave her a bunch of medicine and i'm sure she is asleep by now. she is just waiting for surgery, to go into surgery but they said a lot of people worse off than her so they are waiting until they can get in and get a room opened up for her, i guess. >> reporter: can you tell me how it was that you heard about what had happened and what had happened to your family member? >> one of her partners called my wife and told her what was going on and that is when we came down here.

>> reporter: how long has she been with d.a.r.t.? >> five, six, seven years. >> reporter: has she ever been in any scary situation like this before? >> no. just your normal stuff. few fights and stuff, but nothing like this. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will have continuing coverage of the deadly dallas sniper shootings targeting police. demonstrations against this week's deadly police shootings in louisiana and minnesota took place from coast-to-coast. in minnesota, officials say the crowd outside of the governor's mansion in st. paul grew to more than 2,000. no violence was reported. officials in new york city say yesterday's demonstration was peaceful. protesters carrying signs and noise makers marched from a square in lower manhattan to mid-town. in oregon, a former portland mayoral candidate defused a potentially dangerous situation.

he persuaded a man who was pointing a gun at demonstrators to give up his weapon. a gunman was arrested and no one was hurt. demonstrations were also held in many other cities, including atlanta, chicago, denver, newark, philadelphia, and seattle. graphic video following wednesday's shooting of a minnesota man has emotions running high. marlie hall has that part of the story and, of course, a warning for you. some viewers may find this video disturbing. >> reporter: people across the country are demanding justice, after police officers shot and killed two black men in as many days. the latest happened in falcon heights, minnesota, where a police officer shot philando castile during a traffic shot in minnesota. his girlfriend calmly live streamed the aftermath as his officer kept his gun drawn. on tuesday, baton rouge police officers shot and killed 37-year-old alton sterling in a convenience store parking lot

where he was selling dvds. they responded to a report that a man had a gun. president obama urged law enforcement to address bias in the criminal justice system. he says all americans should be troubled by the shootings. >> i just ask folks to step back and think, what if this happened to somebody in your family? >> reporter: the shootings sparked demonstrations in new york city, dallas, chicago, and philadelphia. >> enough is enough! where hundreds gathered to remember castile to where he served lunch to 500 children every day. protesters made their way to the governor's mansion. governor mark dayton vowed justice will be served. >> would this have happened if the driver or the passenger were white? i don't think it would of. >> reporter: the u.s. justice department says it will monitor the situation. marlie hall, cbs news, st. paul, minnesota. for a third straight night, people gathered in baton rouge, louisiana, to protest the police shooting of alton sterling.

the shooting happened outside of a convenience store. this morning, "the daily beast" is reporting that police allegedly confiscated the store's surveillance video without a warrant. a lawyer for the store's owner i'm jeff glor. >> good morning. president obama is here in war saw to tackle a number national security issues here at nato, but for the second time in less than 24 hours, he is going to be addressing the violence back home. it was last night, immediately upon arrival, that he first spoke out saying he was deeply disturbed by what is recently happened in baton rouge and minnesota. and called on americans to really self-search here and look at some of what he called racial disparities embedded in the american criminal justice system. hours later, that violence in dallas erupted. so when we hear from the president shortly, he will be addressing those police shootings for what seems to be a developing situation that he has been briefed on throughout the night. now the president is currently in a meeting with some of the

heads, european heads of state here to talk about some of the national security issues, but there is violence back home has followed him. he said just last night that he was on the plane, posted a facebook message, then felt that he needed to directly speak to the american people. he came to reporters' cameras and delivered some lengthy remarks, speaking without a teleprompter, and speaking in many ways of what seemed from the heart, saying that he hopes that some of these racial disparities can be tackled in the lifetime of his children but, right now, he said americans really need to look at this not as an issue for african-american communities or for minorities, but broadly as an american justice issue. jeff, we will be waiting for the president in his remarks shortly. >> margaret, thank you very much. to recap what has happened over the last eight or nine hours, if you have not heard about it, in dallas last night, there was a protest over the police shootings that happened earlier this week in baton rouge and also just outside minneapolis.

there was protesters walking down the streets, marching down the streets in downtown about a half mile from city hall and then this happened. shots erupted. the crowd scattered there and officers dived for officer while trying to stop what was happening there. as everyone tried to protect themselves as best they can. you can see there is an officer down there. three people were taken into custody. there was then a standoff and a negotiation with another person who had a long rifle. that ended just a short time ago, as that person apparently took his life. this happened, it first started at about 8:45 p.m. last night, as we said. the chief does believe four

suspects were involved. it is unclear exactly how many weapons were involved, but manuel bojorquez is also in dallas this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, jeff. we are keeping a close eye on the situation. it keeps evolving here. police are blocking this intersection. now the standoff is over, it seems they have moved their operation further into where the initial gunfire erupted and the parking lot where that fourth suspect was holed up and eventually killed himself. let's bring you back to how this all started. the gunfire erupted with no warning thursday evening, as that march was happening in downtown dallas. the downtown area turned into what can only be described as a war zone. there were about 800 people marching when it turned into chaos. official say the intent of the shooters was to kill as many police officers as possible. demonstrators marching not far from city hall ran for their lives as dos of shots rang out.

police say this was a coordinated attack. there is also video that shows one shooter randomly firing a rifle over and over towards unseen targets. police used their patrol cars for cover as they moved in to help wounded officers. the search for the gunman moved through downtown from buildings to restaurants, business, and hotels. dallas mayor mike rawlings spoke early and he talked about just the dedication of the men and women who were out here, as police officers and the distress the devastation the city is going through. jeff? >> thank you, manuel bojorquez, from dallas. we are waiting for the president to speak about what happened in dallas last my. he is in warsaw, poland. this is to address the police shootings that happened in baton rouge and minneapolis earlier this week.

what happened in dallas as far as we can gather right now the deadliest shooting of police officers since 9/11. dawn has not broken in dallas yet so we don't know what else may develop. we don't know what else police may find. we don't know what else they will assess. but that is where we are at right now. eleven police officers were shot last night by at least two snipers. what appears to be, right now, although this may change, four people involved in the shootings and it's our understanding that at least one bystander was hurt as well in this gunfire. margaret brennan is standing by in warsaw as we await for the president here. let's go back to you again, margaret. >> reporter: jeff, the president is just concluding a meeting with european leaders, as well as the secretaries of state and defense john kerry and ash carter. we examine the president to address the police shootings

last night. we understand on the plane here to warsaw, the president was watching news coverage of what he describes as disturbing images of baton rouge and minnesota and laying out what he called racial disparities within the american criminal justice system. he made those remarks publicly last night. since the dallas shooting which happened just hours after he addressed the matter, we haven't heard directly from the president, though, we do know he has been getting updates on this shooting, that is what the white house has been telling us. so we expect the president to make some remarks shortly. his reactions to these police shootings. last night, his appeal was a very emotional one saying and really making the case for what many protesters were out on the streets in dallas trying to lay out here a feeling that the american criminal justice system is somehow rigged against minorities and african-americans. the president has said this is something that should trouble all americans. hours later, this eruption of violence in dallas. so the president is going to be very careful here. he is going to give his

reaction, but we do know that this is something he feels very strongly about and has been monitoring. even coming here to this national security summit here in nato. he has been tracking all of this violence back home. so this will be the second time in less than 24 hours that the president has had to address some of these racially motivated, as he described them, frustrations so let's listen to the president now talk about dallas. >> let me begin by thanking presidents tusk and yonker for the opportunity to meet today. with your understanding, i want to begin with a few words about the situation back in the united states, specifically the situation in dallas, texas. my team has been keeping me updated throughout the morning and throughout the evening in dallas. i spoke this morning with mayor rawlings of dallas to convey

deepest condolences to the american people. i told him the federal government will provide whatever shins dallas needs as they deal with this tremendous tragedy. we still don't know all of the facts. what we do know is that there has been a vicious, calculated, and despicable attack on law enforcement. police in dallas were on duty, doing their jobs, keeping people safe during peaceful protests. these law enforcement officers were targeted and nearly a dozen officers were shot. five were killed. other officers and at least one civilian were wounded. some are in serious condition and we are praying for their recovery. as i told mayor rawlings, i beli

police have an extraordinarily difficult job and the vast majority of them do their job in outstanding fashion. i also indicated that we need to be supportive of those officers who do their job each and every day, protecting us and protecting our communities. today is a wrenching reminder of the sacrifices that they make for us. we also know that when people are armed with powerful weapons, unfortunately, it makes attacks like these more deadly and more tragic. and in the days ahead, we will have to consider those realities as well. in the meantime, today, our focus is on the victims and their families. they are heartbroken.

the entire city of dallas is grieving. police across america are a tight-knit family and feel this loss to their corps. and we are grieving with them. i'd ask all americans to say a prayer for these officers and their families and keep them in their -- in your thoughts and, as a nation, let's remember to express our profound gratitude to our men and women in blue, not just today, but every day. with that, i want to thank presidents tusk and yonker for our work today in warsaw. >> president obama is speaking and reacting for the first time to those fatal shootings in dallas. really trying to calm americans back home, saying federal assistance will be given to leader in dallas and was horrified and called the motivation of the killers of those five policemen twisted, saying there is no justification for any kind of violence,

particularly against the police, as they work trying to oversee what was meant to be a peaceful protest. so the president also trying to qualify the remarks he made ,,,
