9/11. >> this is a well planned, well thought out, evil strategy by these suspects. >> here's cbs reporter don champion. >> good afternoon, the usually bustling streets of downtown dallas have been replaced with crime scene tape and grief this midday. behind me is one of the scenes investigators are combing over in in atrocity. at least one gunman ambushed police officers just after a peaceful protest was ending in downtown dallas. the attack sent the crowd running for their lives. >> i was screaming, run, run, run, active shooter, active shoot ever! >> reporter: 12 officers were hit. fellow officers rushed to share sides. >> get down! >> reporter: five of the officers died. >> we're hurting. our profession is hurting. >> reporter: two civilians were

also injured. police cornered the suspect and negotiated with him for hours. he has been identified as 25- year-old former army reservist micah johnson who was awarded medals for his service in afghanistan. johnson told police he was acting alone. >> he was upset about "black lives matter." the suspected states he wants to kill white people, especially white officers. >> reporter: negotiations broke down with johnson and police got into a gunfight. officers then used a bomb attached to a robot to kill him. police have three other people in custody. much of the downtown area is a crime scene, a ten block area will be closed today as police investigate. in poland overnight, president obama called the shootings despicable. >> there's no possible justification for these kinds of attacks or any violence against law enforcement. >> reporter: the protest was one of several held across the country last night in the wake of two officer-involved

shootings of black men in louisiana and minnesota. the police ambush in dallas is the deadliest day in law enforcement history since the 9/11 attacks. >> this must as to be. this divisiveness between our police and our citizens. >> reporter: the city's police chief is asking for the nation's support. and already this community is coming together in the wake of this horrible tragedy. part of city hall is being used as a blood bank now and earlier this afternoon, hundreds of people filled a park not too far away from here for a prayer service as the police chief here put it, we have to start healing wounds and not creating them. we're in dallas. i'm don champion. now back to you. >> as don said, the city of dallas did come together this morning. community leaders and citizens held their prayer service to honor those officers killed and wounded. there were words of comfort but

scheduled political events today. clinton tweeted, quote, i mean, for the officers shot while doing -- i mourn for the officers shot while doing their duty to protect everyone. >> donald trump wrote, prayers and condolences to all of the families who are so thoroughly devastated by the horrors we are all watching take place in our country. and we will continue to bring you the latest information out of dallas. kpix 5's joe vazquez will have live reports starting at 5:00 tonight followed by a special hour long "cbs evening news with scott pelley" then kpix 5 news at 6:30. an unusual show of solidarity for the dallas victims here in the bay area. about an hour ago, all vta buses and trains stopped for one minute. the idea, to quietly reflect on last night's tragic events. the vta's show was also meant to honor dallas area rapid transit officer brent thompson one of five police officers killed. some bay area law enforcement agencies quickly

responded to try and keep their officers safe. kpix 5's maria medina is in san jose where the chief there issued new orders this morning. >> sad, really sad. hard to talk about. >> reporter: the deadly dallas shooting hits close to home for bill irwin whose son-in-law works for oakland police. >> i'm tearing up thinking about it. that's enough for me. >> reporter: last night in response to the violence against officers in texas, the chiefs for the oakland and san jose police departments announced they would pair up their officers in patrol cars. >> i think it's better for them to be paired up with somebody so it's safer. >> reporter: although normally san jose officers ride solo, they rarely respond to calls alone. they wait for another officer to arrive. now under this honor, they will be responding together. >> it doesn't help the cause. it's intimidating. you think maybe they are already out to get you. >> reporter: some don't agree with this. those we spoke to all believe

violence in the nationwide debate over police brutality is not the answer. >> nobody should be acting that way on either side. >> i can see they are trying to get justice for what happened but i don't think that that's the route. >> it's consistent every day. something new. it's going to escalate. i hope not. i pray it's not. but it's hard to talk about guys. these are guys, you know, lost their lives over this. it's terrible. >> reporter: it's unknown how long the two officer patrols will remain in effect here in san jose. chief garcia is expected to meet with the media and answer any questions today at 12:30. in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. >> that's not the only city taking extra precautions. san francisco's police department says that it will continue its practice of sending out two-person patrol units. officers will also back each other up on calls and runs. oakland is cleaning up after a night of violent protests.

thousands turned out to protest police shootings. at one point demonstrators blocked the freeway and chanted "black lives matter." anne makovec reports. >> reporter: you can see that the flags also flying half- staff here in downtown oakland at the oakland police headquarters. behind them, a door that was broken overnight. they are boarding it up at this point bracing for the possibility of more protests tonight. an estimated 2,000 people gathered in downtown oakland to protest recent deadly police shootings marching through the streets taking over frank ogawa plaza and gathering outside of police headquarters. >> it's a cycle of death that keeps happening because of the injustice in this country about police brutality toward black bodies. >> reporter: someone painted "murderers" on the door of opd and a small group of protestors were violent. this is a damage left behind at a foot locker store on broadway, windows smashed that are now boarded up. same story at smart and final a

few blocks away. but this scene has people all over the bay area concerned today. a crowd before 1,000 protestors shut down 880 in both directions again and the chp didn't stop them. >> once it's a crowd that large it takes us an amount of time to formulate a plan so that we can do it safely. >> reporter: they stayed for four hours climbing on a big rig, occupying all lanes of traffic. the chp's advice to drivers? don't engage with the protestors on the freeway. >> if you can by all means maybe steer clear of the area tonight because it will probably happen again. >> reporter: three people were arrested for failure to obey orders to disperse on the freeway. five people arrested for vandalism in oakland. and there could be more arrests pending as police identify more suspects through surveillance video. i did mention the possibility of protests tonight in oakland. we are also hearing a possible protest in san jose and in san

francisco. live in oakland, anne makevoc, kpix 5. breaking news on what looks like a dallas copycat shooting. this is in tennessee. police there say a black man opened fire along a freeway because he was upset about recent police shootings. one person is killed in this case. three others including a police officer are wounded. it happened in bristol, tennessee. the shooter was shot and taken to a hospital. also this morning, a missouri police officer has been shot in the neck during a traffic stop. it happened in ball win in st. louis county. the officer is in the hospital but his current condition is unknown. the suspect was arrested after a chase on foot several miles from the scene. it's unclear what led up to the shooting . in minnesota, protest over a deadly police shooting in which the aftermath was streamed live on facebook continues. the video is graphic. 32-year-old philando castile was shot and killed by a 4-year

veteran officer in suburban st. paul, minnesota. the school cafeteria was shot after telling the officer he had a gun and permit to carry and was allegedly reaching for his wallet. that video is now evidence to decide whether or not to charge the officer who is on administrative leave. a homeless manmade a 911 call that brought police to the convenience store in baton rouge, louisiana. that's where alton sterling was shot and killed by a police officer. the 37-year-old was developing cds tuesday when the homeless man claims sterling showed him his gun. graphic cell phone video of the shooting was shared on social media. orlando, florida is recovering following the mass shooting at a gay nightclub last month. this morning, san francisco mayor ed lee visited a growing memorial there paying his respects to the 49 dead. he was joined by orlando city

dozens. typhoon nepartak touched down in taiwan today bringing with it drenching rain and 125-mile- per-hour winds. it knocked over trees and power lines leaving tens of thousands in the dark. the bulls got the best of a half dozen people at the second bull run of this year's festival in pamplona, spain. six runners were gored in the run that went for five minutes. spectators say one of the bulls charged at runners after getting separated from the rest of the group. the running of the bulls dates back to the 1500s. another major blow for health technology company theranos. the feds have now banned the company's founder elizabeth holmes from operating labs for two years. back in april, the justice department launched a criminal investigation into theranos' blood testing techniques which promised an effective way to find health problems like cancer. new sanctions take effect in 60

little bit there because we are picking up some significant winds. temperatures right now according to our weather watchers in the 70s and now even 82 in antioch. thanks to jerry for reporting that temperature. charlie in vallejo says it's 72 there. we are talking about a wind, 12 out of the west-northwest in san francisco. 15 sfo with over one-hour delays on some arriving flights due to the low clouds and fog. 11-mile-per-hour winds in vallejo. 17 fairfield. winds variable today 10 to 20 gusting to 30. the clouds hanging tight to the coast. bright sunshine away from the bay. early-morning drizzle will continue because of that right there. it's a trough that has spilled a little bit of light precipitation across the northwestern quadrant of the state. futurecast illustrates no coastal clearing at all. then later on tonight, the clouds surge back inland at least a good 50, 60 miles and then we will see a chance of a light shower in the far reaches of the north bay on saturday. today 50s, 60s, 70s and even

e is it's a question cat owners are often faced with. should you have your cat declawed? our pet expert dr. jill chase is here to talk about. she brought some friends along minuter in have and posey -- minerva and posey. >> i want to talk about declawing cats. in a nutshell, i haven't declawedded a cat in 29 years. i don't think it's necessary and i think a lot of veterinarians would say the same. that may be shocking to say how

could that be, they are ripping up my sofa and chairs. i thought it would be a good opportunity to explain to owners there are ways to keep them from destroying furniture. every two to four weeks trim their nails. i feel strongly that somebody who knows how to do it should do it because you can hurt them. and then of course they become fearful about having their nails trimmed. most places don't charge much to have it done. and then there are so many varieties of cat scratching materials out there. and you really want to try all different things to see what your cat likes. some cats like cardboard. some like rugs. a really good tip is if you have a piece of furniture that the cat loved and you're going to replace it use that material from that couch because they are actually scenting the area that they are -- i know -- >> can i just say minerva is really nervous and posey is giving her love. it's the cutest thing!
