this memorial in front of the police department here and that is dampening the crowds but not the spirit as folks have gathered here in large numbers to pay their respects to the fallen officers. among the flowers and balloons and cards and prayers at dallas police headquarters, two strangers embrace and dissolve in tears. you all know each other? >> no. [ crying ] >> no. [ crying ] it's not real. can't hardably believe that this could happen. [ overlapping speakers ] [ crying ] >> reporter: it's going to take some healing from a lot of communities and here you are strangers and i have to point out, different race, right? what's it going to take? what's it take to get through? >> i don't know. i don't know what the answer is. but i just know that, um, people need to do more than just have a conversation.
6:01 pm
it capital just be rhetoric. it has to be sincere heartfelt. um, feeling and action. >> i'm almost numb after all these events of this week. just being down here and seeing all these people, feeling these emotions, i'm just -- standing here with you. >> we just grabbed one another. we both were crying at the same time. >> obviously we're all feeling the same things right now. >> yes. >> i don't have any answers. i don't know who could possibly have answers. but just upset about this happening. >> it's too much. [ crying ] >> i'm sorry. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> reporter: yeah. the truth is, nobody knows the answer. those ladies hit it on the head. but the fact that they were embracing, the fact that this community is coming together, that says a lot. >> joe, those ladies were saying it can't happen again but 60 minutes ago we were
6:02 pm
hearing about a possible new threat against officers. you were telling us about it. so what happened and what's the latest? >> reporter: right. well, the latest is that dallas police say they have received some threats which they have called credible. that somebody is trying to hurt police officers again. and they have issued this threat citywide. and then the second part of that was that there was some belief that there was somebody in the garage behind the police department. that does not appear to have materialized. they went and searched and sent in dogs to search, as well. there is no immediate threat here at the police department but the larger threat, they are taking very seriously. the last thing they need right now in dallas. >> i'm sure they're on edge out there. joe vazquez live for us in dallas. we'll check back with joe a little bit later. in san francisco, protestors have been trying all afternoon to get on the bay bridge. earlier, police shut down the i- 80 on-ramp at 5th street after demonstrators swarmed the area. and now the protestors have

decided to take a different approach. kpix 5's jackie ward is near the folsom street off-ramp where the crowd is now blocking drivers from leaving the bridge. jackie. >> reporter: juliette, we're at first and harrison street right now and i'm going to ten to the side so my photographer can zoom in and show you what's happening. the protestors just about an hour ago made their way to the fremont folsom street off-ramp and then that forced cars to not go -- they couldn't get off the bridge! they weren't able to get into san francisco. so chp actually had to direct these cars. they were reversing down the off-ramp to get back on to the bridge so then hopefully get off at the next exit. the protestors are sitting down right now and there's a line of cops. there's also a line of chp officers. this is a very heavy police presence here. the protestors i spoke to said they don't want this to be a violent situation. but they do want to be heard. >> they keep killing our black
6:04 pm
people not even just black people, mexican people, they just killing everybody. >> i feel like all race are going to come together and we all going to just up and somehow get on the freeway. so -- >> a lot of people act like it's not happening. a lot of people they see the videos and then they make excuses for it. >> reporter: so earlier this has been going on since 2 p.m. earlier they made their way down by the westfield mall and started blocking entrances to the businesses including outside of the gap where we were interviewing some people and people who were inside the store had trouble getting out, advicers is sa, people trying to get in court and vice versa. that was part of the protest. they didn't want people to shop. they didn't want corporate money to continue "feeding the engine." we're back here showing you the on-ramp to first street to the bay bridge. it is open but feels like a rush hour here on a friday

night it's been a little bit of a hectic situation but chp and police are on scene and there's a lot of them. probably at least 100 or so out here. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> thank you. the wake of the dallas shootings, police accost the country -- across the country are pairing up on patrols as a precaution. >> they have to start thinking more on the security end of things about not looking so much at protecting folks but protecting themselves and protestors. >> in fresno the dispatch center has fielded dozens of calls in the past few days threatening violence against officers! but so far, nobody has actually followed through. meanwhile, many police departments around the bay area are seeing an outpouring of support in the wake of the dallas ambush. mark kelly talked to a napa county teen who says the shootings won't derail her plans to pursue a career in law enforcement. >> makes me sad. >> reporter: when kimberly saw that a sniper killed five
6:06 pm
dallas police officers this week, her heart was broken but not scared. does it make you think twice about going into law enforcement? >> it doesn't. i still want to go into lawmaker. >> reporter: kim's strong interest doesn't surprise this man who runs the california cadet academy. >> being in law enforcement is a calling. >> reporter: he says the academy, which shows teens what being a firefighter, paramedics or cop is really like, has gotten more popular over its 11 years in spite of the recent tensions with police. >> people are definitely more interested in the programs today. firefighters, law enforcement officers, anyone who is involved in public safety, you have to have the heart for it. >> reporter: we have also seen tremendous love for our bay area men and women in uniform following the dallas shooting this week. this poster placed outside napa pd thanks officers for their service. san ramon pd was sent a cake.

this crayon drawing, even some starbucks as a thank you. and in novato, someone placed a single vase of roses in front of the police station. and the california cadet academy spent today collecting donations to mail to dallas. >> one of our brothers or sisters falls, and we all fall. all the monies that are raised will go directly to the peace officers association in dallas to benefit the victims and their families. >> reporter: in american canyon, mark kelly, kpix 5. president obama is going to dallas next week. speaking to nato leaders in poland today, he acknowledged that while it's been a tense and difficult week, the nation is still united and wanting the violence to end. >> as painful as this week has been, i firmly believe is not as divided as some have
6:08 pm
suggested. there is sorrow. there is anger. there is confusion about next steps. but there's unity in recognizing that this is not how we want our communities to operate.
