americans to create change. as funerals for three of the five dallas officers ambushed began today president obama will meet with law enforcement and civil rights leaders to discuss ways to repair the bonds of trust. tuesday during a public memorial service the president applauded the fallen officers for their bravery and sacrifice. >> these men and their families shared a commitment to something larger than themselves. >> reporter: the president then addressed fears gripping a nation caught in a bitter debate over policing over the killings of two black men. he made a plea for common ground. >> surely we should be able to hear the pain of alton sterling's family just as we should hear the students describe afiction for philando

castile. >> people showed up in a show of solidari solidarity. >> i feel the community has grown much stronger. >> we have a lot of work do but it's not impossible. >> reporter: george w. bush had a message for the families. >> we cannot explain it. we can stand beside you and share your grief. >> reporter: this moving image shows the daughter of one of the slain officer giving a bracelet to another, a symbol of their father's ultimate sacrifice. a powerful sign there and another sign of how the community is dealing with the tragedy. one of the main topics of discussion was improving race relations. >> that picture was so touching. don champion in dallas for us. thank you. philando castile will be

buried tomorrow. the president called his mother to offer his condolences. she told mr. obama about his son. >> he was a humanitarian. he was a hard worker. he loved his job and the community loved him. it's just heartbreaking he had to have his life taken from him in that manner. >> philando castile was killed one week ago. three men under arrest in baton rouge, louisiana. the alleged plot was uncovered saturday when police responded to a burglary at a pawnshop. eight guns were stolen. one suspect was caught at the scene and allegedly said the plan was to shoot officers. >> look what happened in dallas, a very peaceful protest and then

some crazy madman did what he did. so i think the threat speaks for itself. we can't take anything for granted anymore. >> police are searching for a fourth suspect. two of the stolen firearms are still missing. alton sterling killed by bat baton rouge police will be buried friday. yesterday his 15-year-old son talked with cbs news correspondent. >> all police aren't bad. they all aren't bad. there are some that are bad but all aren't bad. how i feel, i feel all police shouldn't be punished for other police's crimes. the police in dallas, texas, they didn't deserve that because no body knew if they had kids to go home to. those kids just lost a parent or
