this is kpix news. >> i spoke with and had on the phone. while i was speaking to him. >> turmoil in turkey was dangerously close to home. >> the unrest in turkey is having ripple effects in the us. tonight the faa is banning all flights by us airlines into and out of turkey. here in the bay area emily turner reports people with strong ties to turkey had the -- worry it's headed into a dangerous time. i this is what we watched unfold last night. but for this man it was more shocking because it was unfolding outside his family's home.

>> the 1st thing that went through my mind is what's happening with my family. my family live in turkey and i was worried about them. >> reporter: yesterday's failed military coup went down and left more than 250 people dead. it was put down after citizens and people took to the street to fight back. >> i spoke to my dad on the phone. while i was speaking to him i could hear the machine guns in the background. people shooting each other on the street. >> reporter: today crowds gathered in the park and celebrated by waving flags and chanting. now even though the coup failed, americans worry what this will mean for turkey's political future. >> the concern is that this failed coup is going to allow him to pursue the same policies

of concentration of power much more thoroughly and more extreme. >> reporter: the government has erected nearly 3000 accused coup supporters. as the dust settles both diplomats and turks agree there is plenty to be concerned about. >> to worried about your country. you don't know what is next. >> the us certainly snapped to attention when this started happening in turkey. >> turkey is vital to the war on terror. it is a border with 3 important countries syria, iraq, iran. if we lose a relationship with turkey, potentially lose ground in the war against terror. want to make sure that country stays democratic. >> we have to play nice with turkey consider the request. but it's not as if we are keeping to expedite this because turkey wants it.

>> he is essentially saying i have nothing to do this. not to mention the fact that he says i have been through enough clues. -- coup. i would never have wanted other went or engaged. >> we will see. tonight the parents of a uc berkeley student missing in france are preparing to travel to france to search for him. no one has seen or heard from this 20-year-old ever since the terror attack in nice on bastille day. the mediterranean reopened with tourists paying tribute to the 84 people who did. no clear motive has emerged. a 31-year-old man a the attack and was killed by police. isis is claiming responsibility on social media. as for the missing student, today some of his friends ran into trouble ran into french police while they were looking for them.

-- him. >> we are a group of 85 students. we last -- lost one friend. back emotions are running high looking for missing student make. 2 days after the attack still no sign. the last time anyone saw him he was running away from the struck. his friends who survived the attack are frantically searching for him. passing out flyers. that the search took a bad turn. one of his friends said the french police attend 10 uc berkeley students disturbing flyers. officers manhandled the students. took their phones and took their -- took them to the police station. officers later apologized calling it a miscommunication. >> the police were not helping so we decided to print out flyers. >> nick is a 20-year-old julia -- junior at cal.

3 other uc berkeley students were injured in the attack. to with broken legs and this student with a broken foot. the focus is on finding nick. >> the waiting and uncertainty is hard. >> this guy is also in nice hoping to look for him. >> they will look at everything they can to determine where he was last. and if he was one of the victims that had been hit by the attack. >> reporter: jeff is a security analyst and former fbi special agent. >> if something happens when they can't find identification on you it takes a while to figure out who you are and where you belong. i am sure the hospitals are overwhelmed. >> reporter: i talked to nick's mother yesterday and she is nervous. she and her husband are flying to nice to look for any -- nick. >> attribute along the tour de france route. someone spelled out nice in a

hayfield with a heart dotting the i. back in the bay area, we learned the 2 men died in a terrible crash on a freeway. the crash brought traffic to hold on to 10 in pasadena. -- 210 in pasadena. a red buick was told after being pinned between 2 trucks. the 20-year-old driver of the buick and his passenger, both die. the cause is under investigation. 2 dogs stabbed at the bay area park. tonight the dog owners tell us what led up to the attacks. >> reporter: otis may be wondering where ruth is. he hasn't seen her since last sunday when some weird stuff happen. >> i was standing about where you were. was talking to the neighbor. >> reporter: his human took him to the spartan empty lot that acts as a dog park in a laurel

neighborhood of oakland. he saw puppy on the other side of the fence. >> one of my dogs shot under the fence. a dog's tail was wagging. like night and day the guy flipped out. >> reporter: he says that guy took a 9 inch double-sided knife and then started slashing ruth and then when he got there carolina. >> i looked at my dog and it was cut up so bad from one shoulder to the other. >> reporter: caroline and ruth were slashed on their bodies. the guy picked up his awe and ran. the description 60, dark wearing shorts and a panama hat. >> no one wants to see that. someone cut your dog like they were me. the most horrible thing i've ever seen. >> reporter: police took a report but there is not been an update. a go fund me account has been set up for the $3000 that

bills. ruth is still there. otis hopes she comes back soon. >> the go fund me account has helped pay for about half of what the dog owner needs to pay the vet. the nba communities paying tribute to a golden state warriors legend. seven-time all-star nate thurmond played since he was drafted. known as great nate thurmond he had his number 42 jersey retired from the warriors and cleveland cavaliers. he died in san francisco after a short battle with leukemia. he was 74. the warriors said he represented the franchise with class both of the player and community relations ambassador. he is one of the most beloved figures to ever wear a warriors uniform. tonight steph curry said this. rip big fella. warriors head coach said it so

sad to hear of his passing. he was a great warrior and frequent visitor at games and practices. >> there are only 3 guys that call me vernon. nate was one of them. the other 2 were willie mays and willie. there are only 3 guys in the nba to have 40 rebound games. he was one of them. it is great to hang out with him. he took me to the cal palace. that is where the warriors played a lot of games. he was taking me to the locker room where they had the regular size showers and he showed me had -- how they had to get on their knees to get a shower. it wasn't custom. it was drafted in 1963. a man was so nice and be known for such a defensive terror.

tonight: she is in the hospital. kpix 5's jackie ward tells us: a seemingl a bay area toddler went to the dentist this morning and tonight is in the hospital. jackie tells us a seemingly routine procedure in san ramon left her unresponsive. >> reporter: we don't know many details we know a 3-year-old girl came to this office building for a dentist appointment and left in the mountains. police got to this office building around 1030 this morning. >> we received a medical call of the 3-year-old female juvenile who went for 8 dental procedure and went into complications.
