we this has happened far too often, and i've spent a lot of time with law enforcement this past week. >> for the second time in less than a week, president obama addresses the nation about a deadly attack on police officers, and this time it is in baton rouge where a gunman killed three officers and wounded three more. >> breaking news in the search for a uc berkeley student missing after last week's terror attack in nice, france. the fbi announced nicholas leslie was among the 84 people killed. good evening. i'm brian hackney. >> and i'm juliette goodrich. we begin with that breaking news. 20-year-old nicholas leslie was one of 85 cal students enrolled in a study abroad program in nice. authorities have been searching

for leslie since thursday and today fbi officials notified the university of his death. leslie was majoring in environmental sciences and set to begin studying at the school of business in the fall. three other uc berkeley students were injured in the attack. uc berkeley will hold a vigil tomorrow to honor him. it starts at 4:30 p.m. at sprow plaza. last month sophomore tarishi jain was killed in a standoff in bangladesh. she was in the country as part of an internship through uc berkeley. we're learning more details about the gunman who killed three officers in baton rouge. the shooter has been identified as gavin long. he attacked officers on his 29th birthday. don champion has the latest. >> reporter: cell phone video

captured the gun battle between gavin long and police in baton rouge sunday. >> shots fired. >> reporter: police say the suspect opened fire at a gas station less than a mile from police headquarters. officers were responding to a 911 call of a suspicious person walking with a rifle. >> an absolutely unspeakable heinous attack on law enforcement here in baton rouge. the violence, the hatred just has to stop. >> an eyewitness live streamed the shooting on social media. >> he has a mask on looking like a ninja. >> reporter: as shots rang out, law enforcement took cover behind their cruisers. police say three officers and the gunman were killed in the shootout. president obama expressed his condolences and condemned the attack. >> nothing justifies violence against law enforcement. attacks on police are an attack

on all of us. >> reporter: tension has escalated following the death of alton sterling, a black man killed by police officers nearly two weeks ago. the video of his death sparked outrage nationwide. the motive for this latest shooting on police remains unclear. don champion, cbs news, baton rouge, louisiana. >> one officer is in critical condition fighting for his life tonight. this is the fourth high profile deadly encounter involving police over the past two weeks with jerry brown out of the country, lieutenant governor gavin newsom is serving as acting governor. he's ordered the flags on the capitol building to be lowered to half staff. just nine days ago they honored the police officers in dallas with the same order. >> hillary clinton said this is an assault on all of us. there's no justification for violence, hate, for attacks on

men and women who put their lives on the line every day in the service of our families and communities. donald trump said we grieve for the officers killed in baton rouge today. how many law enforcement and people have to die because of a lack of leadership in our country? we demand law and order. >> san jose's mayor says the events in baton rouge underscore the risks police officers have to take every day. kpix 5 devin fehely has been talking to the mayor and also getting reaction from san jose police to the killings of the officers in louisiana. >> it seems to be profound sadness and simultaneously profound frustration that they've yet again been targeted with deadly results. >> officers are in the line of fire on a daily basis. >> reporter: at police headquarters in san jose, flags were once again lowered to half staff. the fading tributes to the five officers in dallas have yet to

be swept away before fresh tragedy struck the law enforcement community. >> the reality is this is a very dangerous job. these folks are doing everything they can to protect us. as president obama said an attack on a police officer is an attack on all of us. >> reporter: in the wake of the deadly dallas shootings, san jose police doubled up on officers on patrol. so far after baton rouge they've decided not to resume the practice. they released a statement saying they had not, quote, received any credible information of threats, while adding that our officers have the ability to walk two-person patrol cars if they wish. the police officers association condemned what they described as this latest cowardly ambush. they also called on political leaders to increase funding for a department that has in recent years been understaffed and overworked. the murder of the police officers in baton rouge is a reminder of the dangerous job. >> there are a lot of folks trying to protect us right now who feel they're under siege and

maybe genuinely under siege. >> right now the department's policy is it is elective if officers want to ride two to a car. they have that option. it's not clear how many officers are actually taking them up on that offer. in san jose, devin fehely, kpix 5. >> look for the latest on the baton rouge shooting in an-hour-long edition of the cbs evening news. it begins right after this newscast. in walnut creek, a hit-and-run suspect is facing more charges after an officer and k-9 were injured. it happened late last night. police were called to the scene where a pedestrian was hit. the driver took off and nearly ran over someone else. when officers caught up to the suspect, he rammed his car in to a police vehicle, injuring an officer. then ran in to the bushes. the k-9 went after him but the suspect stabbed the dog. police used a taser and bean bag gun to take him down. >> it was really dark. the subject was hiding in bushes and at various times our

officers, depending where they were standing, some officers can see certain things that maybe another officer couldn't see in a different area. >> the officer and k-9 are expected to be okay. the suspect is facing felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon and harming a police dog. one person is dead, another injured after a shooting, this time outside a bar in downtown san francisco. happened about 2:00 this morning along gary boulevard. police say several people leaving the bar got in to a fight. that's when a car pulled up to the area. one person got out, fired several shots. one man pronounced dead at the scene. another man was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. a faulty sprinkler system is to blame for leaving dozens of san jose residents without a place to sleep tonight. a fire broke out at the vintage tower apartments early this morning. small fire so firefighters were able to put it out quickly but cleanup crews say water from the sprinklers flooded the place, doing most of the damage. more than 40 people were displaced. no word on what caused the fire. still ahead, the fight to

where the republican national convention starts tomorrow. security is tight in cleveland where the republican national convention begins tomorrow. but even with all the extra officers and federal agents, concerns are surfacing about ohio's open carry gun law. craig boswell reports from cleveland. >> reporter: security is tight and visible around the quicken loans arena where the gop is gearing up for its convention. cars entering the immediate area are being checked, and officers ranging from local police to the secret service are out in force. >> we planned for anything and everything that could happen. >> reporter: thousands turned

out for the circle the city would love event, to tamp down the tension in cleveland. >> this is an effort of love and peace and justice. >> reporter: there's concerns ohio's open carry law could compromise matters. >> that's all we're asking for here is common sense leadership. >> reporter: a spokesperson says the ohio governor does not have the power to arbitrarily suspend constitutional rights. anti-trump protesters are marching loudly but peacefully with a message for the billionaire businessman. >> the immigration bigotry, the hysteria around muslim people, we want to push back against them. >> reporter: the convention floor is ready for republicans to welcome donald trump as their party's nominee. >> it's going to be a very personal convention. he's going have to family and friends speaking. >> reporter: trump is expected to draw more than the 30 million viewers mitt romney had in 2012.

breeze at the shore and you can see the sea breeze powering through the golden gate. that's what's keeping the inland areas unusually mild this week. low pressure is dropping in over the pacific northwest. kind of stalling. high pressure has actually retrograded, moved back farther to the west. pressures are down. temperatures are down as well. still will be a nice evening tomorrow night. take in the as, taking on the houston astros. partly cloudy skies and 63 degrees. what we're expecting is more of the same really, unusually cool weather to continue tomorrow and tuesday. fog and low clouds will shroud the shoreline. by thursday, friday, saturday the numbers do recover inland to about 90 degrees. we'll scratch and claw our way back to average by the end of the week. overnight lows tonight, we'll be looking at mid 50s for the bay area. then sun up at 6:02 a.m. on monday morning where we will find unusually cool conditions especially the farther inland

you go. concord tomorrow will be 9 degrees below average. san jose, 7 degrees below average tomorrow. oakland, a little bit cooler than average along the shoreline with everybody in the 60s and 70s except morgan hill, the exception. 81 degrees. down in the south bay tomorrow night, sunshine and mid 70s. for the most part, east bay, a few places nudging 80 degrees. rest will be in the mid to upper 70s. north bay tomorrow, low cloudiness before we clear to the mid 70s. shoreline will be on the cool side and persistent low overcast, still summertime in ukiah, lakeport, and clear lake. windsor, 79 degrees. extended forecast, we're going to be looking for numbers to be in the low 80s in the warmest spots for monday and tuesday. then we'll creep in to the mid 80s inland by the end of the week, and nudge 90 degrees by the time we get to saturday and sunday around the bay, we'll be in the mid 70s. it looks like just the usual in the weather department. now if you want the highly unusual and unpredictable, here's mr. glenn.
