convention so dull, humor es will rodgers urged churches here to open their doors so the delegates could have some excitement. >> donald trump is no calvin coolidge and this convention is anything but dull as the dull gets prepare to nominate a political novice as their candidate for president and the party deals with a new reality as a trallity star as this stand bearer. >> in an unprecedented move trump will be speaking on this first night of the convention before he's even nominated. john dickerson is at the podium. john. >> tonight donald trump begins a four-day effort to finish the rebranding of the republican party into the party of trump. tonight the message has been about administration betrails on everything on the u.s. consulate in benghazi to emigration policy. the other objective over the four days is for donald trump to present a more personal picture of himself. more margin and more well rounded in the hopes that that public relations pitch will

convince voters that he's ready to be president. >> all right john dickerson there and gail king is in the midst of it all. she's down on the convention floor. she's been talking to some delegates, gail, good evening. >> i'm here sitting with the new york delegations. as you know they have the best seat in the house, front and center. they say that what we know is make america great again but some people thinks it means make the gop united again because not everybody is on the same page tonight but they say wait until november, we will be there, we're coming along. had set, the majority of the people in this room are for donald trump. they say he is real, he is raw. he's not the establishment and he is their guy. >> gail, thanks very much. also on the floor tonight cbs news chief whitehouse correspond marriage garretmajor garret whon covering the complaint i major. >> on the floor, a woman with a

pink glamour saying over and own gefer trump's islamist phobia she's by herself arms raised pink dress being escorted out of here. she had a banner. supporters nearby tried to rip it out of her hands more testfully than -- successfully than she would have preferred. those around her started to dhanchant usa. trauma slogan make america safe again is a reference to islam in general and immigration specific would make the country less safe. you can see she's being escorted from her seat. i will tell you scott, very near to where trump's running mate make pense is sitting maybe 25, 30 feet from where mike sense is now. he's sitting next to bob dole, long time establishment republican figure. i can tell you governor pense is paying no attention to this disturbance whatsoever acting as if it's not happening at all. the woman being escorted up and

out of the quicken lont loans aa of any organizized opposition to trump someone who is clearly not a delegate but someone who wants their voice heard. >> major is it just the one woman you saw there? major do we still have you? was it just the one protester? >> yes, just the woman, scott. i can barely hear you but if you want to ask me that question again go ahead. >> if it's the one protester there. it's the first time we've seen a protester at the convention this first day. >> yes, just one. all by herself and i would not describe this as a significant disturbance. it was isolated in this one particular section of the arena. most of the arena is not aware of it. but here next to governor pense made it more noticeable about. i'm about 25 feet from it so i noticed it as well. >> the crowd coming to their

feet to cheer the new york city mayor rudy giuliani who in the theme of the night is talking about donald trump making america safe again. major, you've been on the floor for much of the day. earlier there was a disturbance among delegates. describe what happened earlier today. >> well, i would say it was an organized effort to change the rule here for the convention. rules written by the republican national committee to smooth donald trump past the nomination. a rend gat renegade group of des most against donald trump but not all tried to change or tried to ask for a roll call vote on those rules. that would have been a very time consuming process. it would have delayed what you see behind me now. the trump forces in the rnc used a series of procedural moves to thwart them. they did not make it and that created a disturbance on the floor, a bit of an uprising lasted all about 15 minutes. it was resolved and those in the

trump action that deposed him, they call themselves the never trump movement, also reconciled themselves to defeat. they gave it their best effort. not in any way shape or form they're motivated than they were to support trump but they are acknowledging they are defeated. trump has won, the rnc has won and he will be the nominee. >> major, earlier this evening, we had a chance to speak with one of the leaders of the anti-trump movement. he is the senator from utah, mike lee. we asked him about the back room maneuvering that occurred earlier today. the anti-trump faction of the republican party believe it had the support of enough state delegations to force a roll call vote on changing the rules in hopes of preventing a first ballot victory by donald trump. but strangely, and very prizing

convention the chair announced the states had packed out. they called that back maneuvering change. this is what else he had to say. >> in your opinion i take it this convention is not proceeding in a fair manner. >> not so far. i hope that changes. this will be a defining moment for us an illuminating moment where we identify some of the areas of our party that aren't working right. i should be clear by the way. i don't think this is mr. trump's fault. i don't think he was behind this. this is the rnc. this is the people running this convention. they owe the delegates an apology, they owe mr. trump an apology. >> will donald trump be the nominee. >> i think he probably will be and i think it's almost certain that he will be. he will emerge much stronger from this convention. if we were able to have our votes. >> but the party didn't want to take that vote but they didn't

want to count the noses of all the people against mr. trump, i understand your question you but respectfully the party is the delegates who are here. the party is not the rnc. >> will you support donald trump. >> he has yet to earn my vote. i would like him to earn it. >> how does he do that. >> buy embracing the principles that make this country strong, principles of constitutional restraint, federalism, separation of powers. powers should be governed locally and kept away from washington. those in washington should be exercised within the three branches of government respectfully. if he does that he could win a whole lot of conservatives. >> is it an awe trenl attempt to prevent trump from winning. >> i don't know. >> what would you do next. >> i don't know. but again i think it's important for us. this doesn't have to be our defining moment. this is shameful to be sure, it's unfortunate. it was a lost opportunity but it doesn't have to define us. we need to do the things that

united people do which is respect each other's opinions. treat each other with dignity and respect and allow people to cast their votes, express their differences and move on. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> senator mike lee of utah, supporter of ted cruz and a member of the utah delegation. >> this is a big night because shortly we're going to hear from donald trump himself. he's going to be introducing his wife melania trump who is the keynote speaker then. but the warm up act is rudy giuliani. let's listen in for just a moment. >> in almost 30 years. i know him personally. and this is a very good and decent ha man and he will be a great president. [cheers and applause] >> in the last seven months, there have been five major islamic terrorist attacks on us and our allies.

we must not be afraid to define our enemy. it is islamic extremists terrorism. i for the purposes of the media, i did not say all of islam. i did not say most of islam. i said islamic extremist terrorism. you know who you are. and we're coming to get you.

failing to identify them, failing to identify them promptly maligns all those good muslims around the world who are being killed by them. they are killing more muslims than anyone else. it also sets up a fear of being politically incorrect that can have serious consequences. it did in san bernardino, it did with major nadal. he was yelling awe la allah akb. the one who was the was barack

obama. this is why our allies see us as weak and vulnerable. donald trump said the first step in feeding our enemies is to identify them promptly and see connections between them. so we can find them and catch them. to defeat islamic extremist terrorists we must put them on defense. if they are at war against us, which they have declared, we must commit ourselves to unconditional victory against them. [crowd cheering] this includes undoing one of the worst deals america ever made. obama's nuclear agreement with iran. that will eventually, that will eventually let them become a

nuclear power. and is putting billions of dollars back into a country that's the world's largest supporter of terrorism. we are actually giving them the money to fund the terrorists who are killing us and our allies. we are giving them the money. are we crazy? donald trump will make sure that any agreement with iran meets the original goals of the u.n. and our allies. a non-nuclear iran. donald trump is a leader. he will reassert america's position as the nation with the best values to lead the world. it was hillary clinton who

advocated to the overthrow of qaddafi in libya. now libya is in chaos. hillary clinton is accountable for this and much more. her dereliction of duty and failure to keep her people safe played a major role as you heard tonight in the horrific islamic terrorists murders on september 11 and 12, 2012 in benghazi which claimed the lives of four brave americans. ambassador gay christopher stevens, us more than service officer sean smith and cia its tyrone edwards and glenn dougherty. may they rest in peace. and clinton and the obama operation for political reasons lied about the purpose of the

attacks, including hillary clinton lying directly to the families of the people who were killed right to their face. hillary clinton's answer to congress about the deaths of these four brave americans because of her gross failures as secretary of state was, quote, what difference at this point does it make. what difference does it make. watch the video yourselves and see the arrogant dis regard for american lives lost unnecessarily because of her. and then make up your own mind. anyone who -- [chanting usa, usa

tonight to introduce his wife melania and our john dickerson is down at the podium now. john what is melania trump going to say? >> well, she's going to begin or continue a rols we heard rudy giuliani just engage in a little bit here. he's obviously talking about terrorism a lot but he also testified to donald trump's character. talked about anonymous acts of charity that donald trump committed. the idea is that the donald trump you heard about in the media is not the one that they know. he got a big applause line, rudy giuliani did. we talk about unity, he unified the crowd here as he talked about the private donald trump. melania trump will do that same thing and introduce again this idea of the personal donald trump to tamp down those worries others have about him. >> we have received an advanced copy of melania's speech and the speech she says in part that donald trump will bring kindness, love and compassion to the whitehouse. >> melania herself talks about

being an emgrant, becoming a u.s. citizen in 2006. we'll hear more of that indeed. we want to go more on the convention floor who has been talking to a number of delegates. gayle i understand these delegates are very anxious to hear from the trump family. >> this is michelle, she's from rochester new york. this is her first convention as a delegate on the floor. she'll be talking about melania trump's speech. you said you're looking forward to hearing from her tonight, why. >> we need to see the side of melania trouble and see the person he wakes up with the morning, someone who pushes him on the way to the bathroom to brush his teeth. the real deal donald. this man who wakes up. the guy who is the head and the husband and father and everything we need. >> she's the one who would know the answers to those questions. i was talking to some people who say they're not with donald trump yet but they will be with him come november. other people wearing button will say donald trump from the day one, you are one of those

big bold letters refugees welcome. those on the floor saw that, shouted them down, escorted out, end of story. >> thank you very much. we're expecting donald trump in the next minute or so. very unusual, maybe unpress denied, norah, for a nominee at the convention before he's nominated. >> not only that but appearing on another network, fox news network at about 8:30 when the convention was talking to a mother whose son was killed during the ben geeps attack bena very emotional. >> this is before donald trump taking the stain. his prepared remarks are exactly 28 words. let's see if he sticks to it. here's donald trump.

[applause] i'm fortunate for my heritage but also where it brought me today. i traveled the world while working hard in the incredible arena of fashion. after living and working in milan and paris, i arrived in new york city 20 years ago. and i survived both the joys and hardships of daily lives. on july 28, 2006, i was very

[applause] i cannot take the freedoms this country offers for granted. but this freedoms have come with a price so many times. the sacrifices made by our veterans, our reminders to us of this. i would like to take a moment to recognize some amazing veterans, the great senator bob dole. and let us send o thank owl of t venezuela -- all of the veterans in our arena today and those across our great country. we are all truly blessed to be here. that will never change. i can tell you with certainty that my husband has been concerned about our country for as long as i have known him. with all of my heart, i know that he will make a great and lasting difference. donald has a great and deep and unbonding determination and never give up attitude. i have seen him fight for years

to get the project done or even started. and he does not give up. [crowd cheering] if you want someone to fight for you and your country, i can assure you he's the guy. he will never ever give up. and most importantly, he will never ever let you down. he also knows how to remain focused on improving our country, on keeping it safe and secure. [applause] donald is intensely loyal to family, friends, employees, country. he has the utmost respect for his parents mary and fred, to his sister mary ann and elizabeth and to his brother robert and to the memory of his late brother fred. his children have been cared for and mentored to the extent that

even his advisories mean they are an amazing testament to who he is as a man and a father. [applause] there is a great deal of love in the trump family. that is our bond and that is our trent. yes, donald thinks big which is especially important when considering the presidency of the united states. no room for small thinking. no room for small results. donald gets things done. [cheers and applause] our country is under performing and needs new leadership. leadership is also what the world needs. donald wants our country to move forward in the most positive of

ways. everyone wants change. donald is the only one that can deliver it. we should not be satisfied with stagnation. donald wants prosperity for all americans. [applause] we need new programs to help the poor and opportunities to challenge the young. there has to be a plan for growth, only then we'll see the results. my husband's experience exemplifies growth and successful paths of opportunity to the jesse jackson inventory to -- to the next generation.

prosperity and greater cooperation amongst people and nations. donald's intent to represent all of the people not just some of the people. that includes jews and muslims, it includes hispanics and african americans and asians and the poor and the middle class. him than rudy giuliani showed and she proved our perspective, she can be an asset in the campaign as this crowd is reacting to her. >> english is not her native language. she does speak five different languages and today she delivered a perfect speech. >> she did. it was by the script but delivered as you say with great perfection. some part of the speech was designed to repair or begin to repair breaches with the islamic community and with hispanics and with asians, people who might have felt offended by some of donald trump's rhetoric over the past year. she included all of them in her speech to talk about how he could be the president of all of americas. john dickerson is down at the podium for us tonight.

john, what did you see. >> well, this is definitely a new kind of speech from a candidate's spouse. she talked about donald trump but not really in the personal term that ann romney used in 2012 when they talked about how they were moore eating pasta and tuna to use personal stories to get personal inside the candidate. back to you, scott. >> so gayle king is down on the convention floor for us. >> we're here now with chris christie. he's been watching this speech. saying she was confident and very poised. governor christie your opinion about melania trump. >> she's someone who is smart and someone who lofsz her country. it was great tonight and a great way to start the convention.

>> because you weren't chosen was this tough for you sitting here tonight. how did you feel. >> disappointed of course. if you compete for things the way i compete for things, when i compete for signify want to win. but i'm very excited for mike being the nominee. he's a friend. i'm glad donald picked a governor. i think that's important to have done to have somebody in the party in that way for governor pence. chairman of the transition, i take a deep breath and have a good plan together for the president. >> not everyone's on the same page with donald trump yet but we will be there by november. do you think that he will be able to meet the gop party. >> he will be able to do it. >> thank you very much chris christie for your time tonight. scott and norah, back to you too. >> thanks very much. we're going to be back in just a moment with charlie rose's clue

talked about donald trump and she was very tough and called him very dangerous perhaps the most dangerous presidential candidate in the history of this country. >> no self discipline, no self control, no sense of history, no understanding of the limits of the kind of power that any president should impose upon himself. he has shown none of that. let's return to torture, and do you know what, i will order the american military to commit war crimes. what he has laid out is the most dangerous, reckless approach to being president than i think we've ever seen. >> dangerous man ever to run for president of the united states. >> i believe that. >> why is it today in the polls, most recent poll within two or three points. this is a man you just described in such harsh terms close to being even with you. >> well, our presidential elections are close and the

campaign is really just started. but hears what's really happen -- hear here'-here's whal happening i believe. america is worried and he's looking for answers. he's providing simplistic easy answers. let's make america great again which means basically we'll go back to the way it was and you, you out there whoever you are, you're going to have a better shot. it is a, you know, unfair and wrong-headed view of history. >> are you speaking to these fears and these concerns in a way that there is an alternative that they can clearly see. so they believe and trust you to be on their side. >> well that's what i intend to do. and i have a very clear sense of what we can do that will actually produce results. not just demagoguic rhetoric but real results. >> this really goes to the core of how some people in significant polls say, they say they don't trust you and you

have thought about this and you have begun to speak about this. >> yes, i have, yes i have. >> tell us. >> it is something that clearly i don't like to hear. nobody would. and it is at such variance with the way i am perceived when i'm doing a job. part of it is seeking this job at this time of fear, anxiety, discouragement, rejectionism that is unfortunately part of our political environment right now. i understand people who are asking these questions. and i hope by the time we have this election, it will be clear to voters who they can count on. >> charlie, great and i know you've got so much more of this interview that will air on your show. on the night they're saying make america safe again, hillary clinton is saying this guy can't be trusted with the nuclear. >> exactly what she said. but she at the same time

understands and talks about the fact she has a huge plus factor. >> for herself. >> for herself and she's not perfect and that she has to go at the america people and convince them to believe in her. >> on cbs news 76% of the people said they did not trust her. >> she's talking about herself. we're looking in this upcoming way the two most least popular political candidates ever to run for the presidency. >> a remarkable campaign. and beginning with a remarkable first night here at the republican convention. we're going to have our panel of political experts and the insight of bob schieffer when we come back to cleveland.

republican national convention here where we have heard from donald trump and melania trump tonight. joining us now our panel of cbs news political analysts, peggy noonan and mark leibovich of the "new york times." we heard on 60 minutes donald trump's choice of mike pence of the vp had unified that party. did we see that today here. >> oh my goodness i do not think we did. we just saw a floor full of people altogether listening to mrs. trump who i think haded

some real glamour to the proceedings. before that things were historically in terms of the speeches had been a little bit grim. there was a sense of people being besieged and also angry. there were a lot of boos and nos and such. to your question, i think the party, the republican party had about eight or ten weeks to get used to the idea it has a nominee and unify around him. i think it became clear today that that has not happened and it did not happen. >> one of the things that i noticed today is that this is the first day but the hall has been about half empty all day long. of course we know that neither of the presidents bush have decided to come. other noteables, lindsey graham are missing as well. is the party uniting around donald trump.

>> it doesn't appear. a poll recently came out yesterday, nbc news and the washington journal, 67% of the republicans were unhappy with the nominee. just 38% were happy with it. while i think most republicans will end up voting for donald trump, in november it is very clear to me looking at the numbers, looking at this seemingly sparsely attended convention, looking at the lack of party stars at this convention, not just former presidential candidates or former presidents but a whole sort of constellation of governors and senators and people who you would expect to see at a convention like this. the fact these people are absent from it, the fact that so many republicans are unhappy strongly suggest that looking at the republican is fundamentally divided over the president donald trump. >> on that note, a bunch of people already left. the program's not over. this is michael flynn who is

speaking right now raising questions about the national security credentials of hillary clinton. mark, talk about that. i mean we're going to hear more from family members than they are going to hear from sitting u.s. senators. >> yes. i don't think there's any question this is a unified party. certainly nothing today would lead anyone to think that has happened at all. i think what's interesting is that donald trump doesn't seem to care and i think a lot of of the other people don't seem to care. it's almost this passionate division here. and it's almost as if donald trump is trying to start his own almost quasi-independent party and let the rnc sort of run it and pay for it. and you know, again as peggy said, he has six, seven weeks to really do this. and he doesn't seem to have cared that much. so look, it adds drama, it adds a level of and. melania trump gave a very good speech tonight especially for a political novice but the sense of unity is not something that anyone takes that leading.

even republican governor john kasich, the host governor will not be here. his friends say he will not step foot in the arena because he disagrees with what trump stands for and feels it would be critical to give his stance of approval. modern history shows that candidates outside their party main streams don't do well. barry goldwater wres ustled the non-nation -- wrestled in 46 but lost to lyndon johnson. democrats kicked out party regulars in 72 and nominated george mic mcgovern, he won onle state. donald trump may or may not win but in a party facing an identity crises, the question here is is he changing the party for better or worse or is many establishment republicans worry destroying it altogether. >> bob schieffer, thank you very much. drum made adonald trump made ane
