>> those weren't the only fireworks on day one. the thwarted attempt to dump trump and the heartbroken mom who blames hillary clinton for her son's death in benghazi. and charlie rose sits down with hillary clinton one-on-one, she trashes trump as the most dangerous person who ever ran for president. >> no self-discipline. no self-control. no sense of history. good morning. from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. well, the republican national convention kicked off with dissent and speakers who painted a bleak picture of the united states, but this morning it was the speech by melania trump, last night's star attraction that's causing a stir. in an unusual opening night move, donald trump came on stage to introduce his wife. there were two passages in her speech that were strikingly similar to michelle obama's speech at the 2008 democratic national convention.

>> my parents impressed in me the value that you work hard for what you want in life. that your work is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise. that you treat people with respect. >> barack and i were raised with so many of the same values. like you work hard for what you want in life. that your word is your bond. that you do that you say what you say you're going to do. you that treat people with dignity and respect. >> we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. because -- because we want our children in this nation to know that all you need for your achievement is the strength of

your dreams and your willingness to work for them. >> barack and i set out to build lives guided by thesevalues. and pass them on to the next generation because we want our children and all children in this nation to know that the only limit to the height of your achievement is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them. >> in a written statement, the trump campaign addressed melania trump's speech. "in writing her beautiful speech, melania's team of writers took notes on her life's inspirations and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking. melania's immigrant experience and love for america shone through her speech which made it such a success." when the convention opened, anti-trump delegates hoping to derail his nomination staged a surprise protest. they were overruled. craig boswell has more. >> reporter: trump's family will be featured throughout the week

in a concerted effort to soften his image. the theme at the convention was security, one of the featured speakers was pat smith whose son sean was killed in the benghazi attack in 2012. >> i blame hillary clinton personally for the death of my son. personally. >> reporter: iowa senator joni ernst said trump will be the president who can keep america safe. >> he will not hesitate to destroy those who wish to harm our great nation. >> roll call vote! roll call vote! >> reporter: earlier, there was chaos on the floor. some delegates tried to force a roll call vote on the convention rule. it was rejected. craig boswell, cbs news, cleveland. cbs news contributor bob schieffer has been covering political conventions since 1968.

here's his take on this year's gop gathering. this one is different. the republican party is vetting its future now on a candidate who has never held public office, never served in the military. is anti-trade. anti-entitlement reform that has proposed a budget critics say would add trillions of dollars to the national debt. by any conventional reasoning, he is a long shot, but this is not a typical year. republican primary voters chose him because they say he speaks his mind and they feel abandoned by their party. but his nomination has left this party deeply divided, so divided even the republican governor john kasich, the host governor, will not be here. his friends say he will not step foot in the arena because he disagrees with what trump stands for, and feels it would be hypocritical to give his stamp of approval. modern history shows that candidates outside of their party mainstream don't do well. barry goldwater wrestled a nomination from the republican establishment in '64, but lost

to lyndon johnson. democrats kicked out party regulars in '72 and nominated george mcgovern, he won only one state. donald trump may or may not win. but in a party facing an identity crisis, the overriding question here is, is he changing the party for better or worse? or as many establishment republicans worry, destroying it altogether. >> well, weijia jiang is in cleveland. and the theme for the republican convention today, weijia, is make america work again. what is that going to work like? tell us about that theme. >> well, good morning, anne-marie. this is a chance for republicans to really talk about what donald trump boasts as one of his greatest strengths is to create jobs and boost the economy because of his history as a businessman. the official theme for the rnc also specifically mentions hillary clinton with a warning that a clinton presidency would be much more of what they call

anemic economic growth. so, of course, we expect to hear solutions how trump would fix that, all in mind with make america work again. >> so, who are the big speakers then today? >> well, the lineup has a lot of high-profile, high ranking republicans including house speaker paul ryan. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell, new jersey governor chris christie. at one point, trump promised it was was going to be a show biz kind of convention, with celebrities and stars, but it's also shaping up to a family event also. we heard from melania trump. we'll hear from the trump children including tiffany trump, eric trump and donald trump jr. >> weijia jiang in cleveland, thank you so much. "cbs this morning"'s co-anchor charlie rose talked with hillary clinton yesterday. she said donald trump is the most dangerous man ever to run for president. >> no self-discipline. no self-control.

no sense of history. no understanding of the limits of the kind of power that any president should impose upon himself. he has shown none of that. let's return to torture. and you know what, i will order the american military to commit war crimes. what he has laid out is the most dangerous reckless approach to being president than i think we've ever seen. well, coming up on "cbs this morning," more of rose's interview with hillary clinton, and coverage of day two of the gop convention in cleveland. baton rouge police say the former marine who ambushed police officers systematically targeted them. an autopsy is expected to be performed on gavin long's body today. don champion is in baton rouge. don, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie, authorities offered up new disturbing details yesterday as they vowed to leave no stone unturned in the investigation. two days after the tragedy, it

is clear the gunman used his military training to ambush the officers. >> reporter: chilling new images released by investigators offered new detail on the baton nman's deadly attack. they show gavin long armed, dressed in all black, as he carried out his shooting sunday. investigators say the former marine bypassed civilians while methodically searching for police officers. >> he was looking for locations to specifically target police officers. there's no doubt whatsoever that these officers were intentionally targeted and assassinated. >> reporter: three officers were killed in the eight-minute rampage. the gunman was eventually killed by a s.w.a.t. team with a shot fired from 100 yards away. three other officers were wounded including sheriff's deputy nicholas touay who was shot in the head and stomach as he sat in his patrol car. >> we're just praying for him

it's in god's hands, and we'll just have to see what happens. >> reporter: president obama called the families of the fallen officers and law enforcement officials yesterday to offer his condolences. attorney general loretta lynch condemned the attack and called it counterproductive. >> these incidents occur and it seems to pull us back into a period where we're so far apart. >> reporter: while investigators say long acted alone, they're still looking into whether someone may have known about his plan. now, as part of the investigation, authorities are still trying to build a time line of where and what the suspect was doing, the gunman was doing the days before the attack. meantime, president obama has ordered the flags fly at half-staff in honor of the fallen officers. anne-marie. >> don champion in baton rouge. thank you so much, don. this morning, isis says a teenage migrant who attacked passengers on a german train was one of its fighters. he was shot and killed by

police. the train was traveling through central germany last night when the 17-year-old used an ax and a knife to attack passengers. four people were injured three suffering serious injuries. teenager had a hand painted isis flag in his home. a french prosecutor who says the truck driver who killed 84 people in nice had expressed support for isis. yesterday, remembers threw trash on the spot where he was killed. officials say he carefully plotted the attack. and several visits to the beachfront in nice. well, coming up on the "morning news," exposing twitter trolls. 49 years ago, 44 american soldiers survived an enemy ambush in vietnam because one pilot refused to leave them behind on the battlefield. on monday, president obama awarded that pilot the highest military award the medal of honor. david martin spoke with him. >> reporter: the pilots in chuck kettles' helicopter bet italian called it chump valley because only a chump would fly into a landing zone so exposed to enemy fire. zone so exposed to enemy fire. >> we had eight helicopters in this operation, all of them got hit. >> reporter: kettles was trying to rescue american soldiers trapped by a north vietnamese
