good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. in accepting the republican nomination for president, donald trump promised to put america first. his speech lasted more than an hour, as promised. trump vowed to restore law and order, control immigration, and negotiate new trade deals. and he lashed out at hillary clinton. weijia jiang is in cleveland with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. donald trump spoke for 76 minutes to be exact, but his address did not offer any specific details about policy. and it also lacked the humor and impromptu style that once defined trump's speeches, as he tried to convince the country that he is ready to be commander in chief. fireworks lit up the sky outside the arena as balloons rained

down on donald trump and mike pence and their families. the joyful celebration crafted trump's dark 75-minute address in which he vowed to restore law and order to a nation in peril. >> the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon, and i mean very soon, come to an end. >> reporter: trump also made his case against opponent hillary clinton. >> the world is far less stable than when obama made the decision to put hillary clinton in charge of america's foreign policy. let's defeat her in november. >> reporter: clinton's campaign fired back over social media throughout the speech. >> i'm with you, the american people. >> reporter: the presumptive democratic nominee took particular offense when he

mocked her campaign slogan, firing off this tweet, i'm with you, not included, women, african-americans, lgbt people, muslims, latinos, immigrants. trump's speech also aimed to sway republican voters, still skeptical of his campaign. his oldest daughter ivanka trump did her best to reach women voters. >> he will fight for equal pay, for equal work. >> to talk about equal pay for women, i thought she did a great job. >> reporter: the focus now shifts to democrats, whose convention starts next week in philadelphia. but right here at the quicken loans arena, it looks more like a construction site, as crews hastily tear this down and prepare for the next big event here. of course, the opposite is happening in philadelphia ahead of the democratic convention. this afternoon, we expect hillary clinton to announce her pick for vice president in order to energize democrats ahead of the start there. virginia senator tim kaine is the top contender.

>> weijia jiang in cleveland, thank you so much. following trump's speech, "cbs this morning" co-host norah o'donnell asked cbs news contributor bob schieffer and cbs news political director john dickerson for their take on trump's message. >> it was a speech full of existential threats. he mentioned the threats to our way of life and a moment of crisis. this was for a candidate who came up with stadium rallies, this was very much like his stadium rallies, as others have mentioned, no optimism. the question now is is there a big enough group in the company who shares that same desperate feeling about the state of things, that they are under siege? the reason politicians usually use optimism is to bring in new people. there was no pivot. it's all pure trump and it looked like that's the way he is going to run the rest of his campaign. >> the speech lasted 74 minutes. hillary clinton tweeting, we are better than this.

bob, you've heard a number of these speeches. how would you analyze this? >> this convention has been marred by negativity, up until now. i mean, the fact this is probably -- it was an attack on what is wrong with everything and mainly hillary clinton and it's her fault, but for having said that, this probably is the most positive speech that we have heard all week. basically, it comes down to this -- donald trump said he's going to make everything put up all of the trade agreements and put in a new immigration policy and he is also going to cut taxes. i think the follow-up question might be, how is he going to do all of that? earlier, in a first for a republican convention, openly gay silicon valley billionaire peter thiel acknowledged his sexuality. >> of course, every american has a unique identity. i am proud to be gay.

i am proud to be a republican. but, most of all, i am proud to be an american! >> thiel warned republicans against waging culture wars. republicans stripped all gay rights mentioned from their platform. texas senator ted cruz is still taking heat for not endorsing donald trump. thursday morning, cruz was forced to defend his decision to the texas delegation, some of whom were highly critical of his position. >> i am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father. >> during the campaign, trump mocked cruz's wife's appearance and linked his father to the kennedy assassination. and trump asked cruz to speak at the convention and knew he would not endorse him. >> coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk to ted koppel about his interview with donald trump. the democratic national convention starts monday in philadelphia and hillary clinton

may announce her running mate as early as today. this morning, clinton begins a two-day campaign swing through florida. sources tell the associated press, virginia senator tim kaine is the leading candidate to join clinton on the democratic ticket, but no final decision has been made. speakers at the democratic convention include michelle obama and bernie sanders monday night. on tuesday, former president bill clinton, mothers of black men and women who have been killed by gun violence or in police custody, including the mothers of eric garner, trayvon martin, and michael brown. on wednesday, president obama and vice president joe biden speak. hillary and chelsea clinton wrap up the convention thursday. during a white house reception, president obama called for an end to discrimination against muslims. the president hosted more than a hundred muslim americans to celebrate the end of the holy month of ramadan. the president, again, challenged donald trump's proposal to temporarily ban muslims from

entering the country and putting mosques under surveillance. >> singling out muslim americans, moreover, feeds the lives of terrorists like isil that is west is how at war with a religion that includes over a billion adherence. that is not smart national security. >> the president also urged muslims to answer those who use the religion to justify violence. the nba is looking for a new home for the 2017 all-star game. the league announced it will be moving the game from charlotte yesterday because of a north carolina law that limits anti-discrimination protection for the lgbt community. the league had lobbied to change the bill known as hb-2. it's estimated charlotte will lose about a hundred million dollars in revenue. wnba players don't understand why they were fined for wearing black warm-up shirts following the recent shootings of black men by police

and the ambush of police in dallas. players on three teams were fined $500 apiece after wearing the shirts with the #black lives matter and dallas five. a man who forced an overnight stand justify with new york city police is accused of making terrorist threats. officers say he tossed a fake bomb into a squad car on wednesday night and then he parked at a mid manhattan square claiming he had a bomb. he finally surrendered yesterday morning and no explosives were found on him. this morning, malaysia and australia and china agreed to suspend the search for mh-370, after the search in the current area is complete. the malaysia airlines flight disappeared over the indian ocean in march of 2014 during a flight. there were 239 people on board. some debris has turned up on the shores of africa. in a statement, the country said despite the best efforts, the likelihood of finding the plane
