reporter: neighbors say the rowdy bottle throwing crowd spilled into the street. when police arrived they scattered hopping fences and running through the backyards. >> a whole bunch of cops started to come here. i heard bottles crack and then i heard a big thump and they hit the back window of my car and it broke. >> reporter: alexi avellar replaced his broken windshield this morning but the owners of the home which was empty and under renovation when party- goers broke in have only now begun to assess the damage. >> it's scary. you don't know what's going to happen, what kind of people is out there. >> reporter: erwin lives next door and saw everything as police called in the s.w.a.t. team to disperse the increasingly hostile crowd. >> i just hope they have the people in custody the ones breaking into these houses because, um, this house is about to be ready for rent and i heard it's going to be set back. >> reporter: a spokesman for the police department says many of the party-goers escaped through the backyard. several neighbors who didn't want to talk on camera for fear of retaliation say they were deeply troubled by last night

and that the party left them with little to celebrate. in the san jose, devin fehely, kpix 5. a different kind of mess in santa clara where a worker at a waste water plant accidentally turned the wrong valve and released nearly a million gallons of sewage into the bay. now, that's enough to fill about 50 backyard swim pools but it's not quite as bad as it sounds. the "mercury news" reports the water from the alviso plant had already gone through the first two levels of treatment, so most of the contaminants were already gone. and the spill is no threat to public health or the environment. a big fire burning near big sur doubled in size overnight to almost 5 square miles. the soberanes fire is threatening about 1,000 homes near garrapata state park. so far no burned structures but the fire is still zero percent contained. some san francisco firefighters

are now headed to the site to help. meanwhile, southern california another big wildfire scorched 11,000 acres in the hills just north of los angeles. 1500 homes in the santa clarita valley have been evacuated. the so-called sand fire has been burning out of control since yesterday and they have only 10% containment there. reporter greg mills caught up with evacuees on two and four legs. >> reporter: high heat, low humidity and enough wind to make it dangerous. mark underwood has lived in little tujunga canyon for nine years and is under evacuation orders. >> when they say go, go. >> reporter: it's not that easy. most of the places are horse ranches. people tend to worry more about their beloved animals before they worry about their own safety. >> we really are concerned because look at that. >> reporter: javier perez has 16 acres and 22 horses. they were on his mind as he watched the sand fire moving through the mountains and

heading his way. >> they never get up that close, but we really worried about that. >> reporter: the great thing is horse people help other horse people. perez had lots of help from volunteers. that's good because moving his horses wasn't easy. >> most of them had not been handled at all so we did a lot of horse wrangling and a lot of people putting horses into small chutes, biting, kicking. >> but they were experienced and could handle it. karen and her friends offered help and trailer in moving the horses to safety. >> we got everybody out. >> reporter: 22 horses and a whole bunch of chickens out of the path of this fire. >> i feel that we should make it out right on time. >> reporter: further up the canyon mark underwood pondered moving these big guys and told us in addition to their weight and strength, they tend to be rather uncooperative. >> the weather isn't doing firefighters any favors. excessive heat warnings are posted for parts of southern california with temperatures in some spots soaring into the triple digits. now, our colleagues at our

sister station in los angeles left this thermometer on the dashboard of a car parked in the sun. it reached 120 degrees in less than three minutes. a few minutes after that the thermometer exploded! >> out here in this heat, all we can do is stay hydrated and work cautiously. that's all we can do. >> the heat is just as hard on pets as it is on people. with the ground so hot, some dogs are actually wearing shoes to protect their feet. earlier this year, kpix 5 discovered that hundreds of homemade untraceable guns have wound up in the hands of criminals in the bay ar. reporter christin ayers says, the governor is cracking down. >> reporter: they're called ghost guns. untraceable homemade firearms. hobbyists are legally allowed to make them and own them in california, no registration required. but tonight governor jerry brown signed a bill that would require anyone planning to build a ghost gun to get a serial number and undergo a

background check. >> going through this process, well, at least allow law enforcement some tracking mechanism in place. >> reporter: kpix 5 security analyst jeff harp says the proliferation of ghost guns has bedeviled law enforcement. >> they are a problem everywhere. anytime you have an unregistered weapon it becomes a problem for all law enforcement. >> reporter: the atf has seized hundreds of ghost guns and silencers in california in recent months. a kpix 5 investigation revealed they often wind up in the hands of criminals like daniel crownenshield known as dr. death. >> pull it and here's the hole. >> reporter: he was caught on hidden camera illegally manufacturing and dealing untraceable firearms. harp says now that the bill has been signed the state will have to figure out logistics next. >> as long as california is able to give them the serial number they are looking for, for their firearm, i think people have a little higher comfort level with that. >> reporter: christin ayers, kpix 5. >> that same bill was

introduced two years ago, only then governor brown vetoed it. there seems to be no ceiling in sight for bay area home prices. they have hit record highs for the third month in a row. now, according to real estate research firm core logic, the median price of a house or condo in the nine-county area is now $712,000. and that is more than a quarter million dollars above the statewide average. but it's nowhere near what you would need to buy in san francisco where the median price is just under $1.2 million. but despite the boom in prices, sales are actually down by about 6.5% over the past year. and realtors say it's inventory as more and more people clues to hold on to their homes in this red-hot market. well, so-called furniture tax for online rentals is expected to generate $120,000 in revenue for the city of san francisco this year. the tax requires people offering rentals on airbnb and similar sites to tally the

contents of their homes so the city can put a tax on everything from sheets to sofas. it covers all spaces being rented, meaning it could be an entire house or just a room. airbnb says it wants to see the process simplified. bart is hanging out the help wanted sign. the transit agency has 60 openings to fill by november as it upgrades trains and technology. they are looking for computer systems and mechanical engineers mainly. the jobs pay from $90,000 to $160,000 a year. some of those big upgrades start next weekend, as well. they will affect service between daly city and glen park for the next three months. service will be shut down between the two stations every weekend through mid-october and that will include the labor day weekend. so if you are headed to sfo, you will need extra time. shutdowns are part of bart's efforts to replace critical crumbling stretches of track. caught on camera! an irate customer goes crazy at

shop. rachel kim shows us: the whole encounter -- was caught on tape. orange police are looking for a customer who attacked a clerk in a cell phone repair shop. rachel kim shows us it was caught on camera. >> reporter: the store's owner says the customer dropped off his phone to be fixed on friday and came to pick it up on monday earlier than he was told. the employee told the man the part they ordered hadn't come

in so it wasn't ready. that's when the man apparently flipped out. in the security video, you can hear the man starting to curse and telling the employee that no one was getting out of there of in he got his phone because he had to make a call. he said he didn't have a loaner so he offered him a refund. after 10 minutes the man snapped and became violent. >> he slammed me into the bench and i pepper sprayed him as soon as i could before, um, before he could do anything else. he showed me extremely -- shoved me extremely hard into the tech bench. i got whiplash and concussion and my whole brain is swollen. >> reporter: the suspect then grabbed his phone, the other phone and others in the back of the store before he jumped a counter and ran off. rachel kim, kpix 5. >> one cell phone carrier is about to make customers

unhappy. verizon is pulling the plug on some data hogs if they don't pay up. users who were grandfathered will have to be in a metered plan on have their service terminated if they use an extraordinary amount of data amounts to 100 gigs or more per month. it's a busy week for verizon. the giant is closing in on a deal to buy yahoo's core business. the price tag, about $5 billion. the sale would include yahoo's neft internet properties and patents but not real estate holdings. the deal could be announced as early as next week. well, just when you thought you could buy just about everything on amazon, there is even more. the online retail giant is offering prime customers a prime rate on student loans. it's begun offering private student loans through wells fargo with a half point discount on the regular interest rate. the student prime program is open to both grads and

undergrads and repayment is deferred for the first six months after leaving school. the biggest all girls baseball tournament in the country is being held in san francisco this weekend. kpix 5 reporter sharon chin was at today's opening ceremonies at kezar stadium. lots of excitement out there. >> reporter: oh, you bet. the girls are excited. they have come from all over the country, even canada, and they can't wait to play in this tournament of their own. >> whoo! >> reporter: more than 200 girls from the u.s. and canada came to play ball. they will compete in a week- long all girls tournament in san francisco with baseball for all. >> i'm just really happy that there are so many girls that like like are exited to play baseball. >> there is a huge deal because these girls have been told from the first time they started playing that they should go start playing softball. >> reporter: the second annual tournament headed up by baseball for all founders who

became major league baseball's first woman coach with the oakland a's. >> there are girls from 8 to 16 ready to dream. >> reporter: earlier this month the minor league sonoma stompers made history with two women on the roster. that inspired this girl who has 500 home runs. >> i'm working hard. i know if i work hard enough i'll get there. >> reporter: encouraging the girls will be two women from the all american girls professional baseball league who played in the real life league of their own more than 50 years ago. >> gives the girls an opportunity to choose what they would like to play. they always push them off to softball but so many girls love to play baseball. >> yay! >> reporter: sue ginsberg of the san francisco rec and parks department brought the tournament from orlando hoping to build momentum for change. >> 100,000 girls across the country play youth baseball and only 1,000 play in high school. >> reporter: so take a look.

these stars of today could be the major leaguers of tomorrow. the girls will play at moscone rec center. they will also get a chance to take a tour of at&t park and meet with women who are senior managers at the san francisco giants. really they are getting inspiration from women in baseball both on and off the field. juliette? >> so it's a win-win all around. sharon, thanks so much. all right. we are going to go from that to a tropical swarm. after all, it is the season. but it's threatening the big island of hawaii tonight. tropical storm darby has 60- mile-per-hour winds max so it's kicking up surf especially rain. it's going to pass over the entire hawaiian island rain. a lot of rain in 24 hours affecting most of the islands. winds not a big deal. surf is up. rain could cause some problems. tropical storm darby right now is just about 50 miles southeast of gila, hawaii. it will make landfall in the

next few hours. back in the bay area, our weather story of the summer is always the microclimates where you go 35 miles, you gain 45 degrees from 58 at pacifica to 103 today at livermore. so that's still plenty warm -- i like that -- it's still plenty warm inland. and nice and mild along the shoreline. concord now still has 97 degrees. oakland 72. livermore 93 degrees. this is all very interesting. [ laughter ] >> san jose 85. santa rosa 88. [ pause ] >> i don't know. sea breeze is offshore. it will strengthen a bit and as a result, we are going to cool things down a bit. you get more of a sea breeze, you get more cooling in the weather department. slightly cooler inland as a result not so much you would really notice. in fact, high pressure generally dominant over the southland and it affects us a little bit. so the high will ease up a touch tomorrow and monday bringing temperatures down a touch before warming up again on tuesday. fluctuations in the high temperatures not dramatic and the low clouds not going to

help a lot. you can see that tomorrow morning at about 8 a.m., we have low clouds digging in at the shoreline dissipating as the day goes on and they pop again abeam south of san francisco. on-again, off-again in the low clouds department. still tomorrow the a's at the coliseum mostly sunny skies, 74 degrees at game time against the rays. here's what we're looking for, more fog and low clouds along the shoreline so temperatures cool a little bit. they warm up again midweek. nice day for the sonoma county fair. santa rosa 91 tomorrow. state fair in sacramento, 103. and stern grove festival 63 degrees tomorrow. messing up traffic but generally a good time to be had by all. free san francisco symphony concert at pier 27 tomorrow good weather there. overnight mid-50s in fact bay area of the daytime highs central valley tomorrow very warm above 100 degrees but nice and mild along the shore. daytime highs tomorrow in san

environmental sounds like outside. when there's competing noises, um, i have like a 50/50 hearing loss. [ bell ] >> reporter: that was exactly the scenario recently when joyce was downtown near "k" street. she and hook were crossing the busy intersection but joyce didn't see or hear an oncoming rt train. >> yeah. i was probably about in the middle of the street and then hook started jumping on me and so, um, when i got to the tracks, hook just pulled me off the tracks. he just -- he like ran and he pulled me off the tracks. and i turned around and it's like here i am and here's the train and whew! just missed me. i would say about a foot. oh, my gosh! i can't believe, you know, that my dog did this and saved my life. >> for his efforts, hook earned himself a spot as one of the eight finalists for the american humane association's hero dog award. the national winner will be

and one bay area athlete w's competed twice before.. is the olympics are fast approaching. and one san francisco native who has competed twice before is getting ready to go. kpix 5 reporter jackie ward caught up with him before he leaves for rio tomorrow. it wasn't hard. he is jackie's brother-in-law. >> reporter: the road to rio is getting shorter. >> feel great, yeah. we have been getting some really good training sessions in and we're all ready and excited to get there and get situated. >> reporter: 25-year-old gehrke meinhardt has been here before. in 2008 he made history by being the youngest u.s. olympics fencer ever and the youngest athlete to represent team usa that year. fast forward eight years later,

with two olympic games behind him, gerek has medals on his mind. >> now being older and a more experienced veteran on the team, it's an interesting role and something i'm looking forward to. hopefully i can use some of that experience and help our team get on the podium. >> reporter: fencing has been part of his life for 15 years. the sport helped him earn a full scholarship to notre dame where he got his bachelor's degree and mba graduating with couple lady latin honors both -- graduating with cum laude latin honors both times. a lot of his studying was on planes as he faced world fencers and consistently being one of the highest ranked fencers himself. >> an exciting fast paced lifestyle right now and i'm enjoying it. >> reporter: but that lifestyle won't last much longer. he is retiring from fencing after rio. it will be a change of pace one that will take time getting used to. >> i always feel like i have something else i should be doing.

thankfully, there's a lot of packing that i have to do right now. >> reporter: the men's foil event is two weeks away but the u.s. men's team is meeting in -- the u.s. fencing team is meeting in houston tomorrow where they will get all the olympics swag, from there to brazil. >> i'm just appreciating the moment. so few people get to experience that and i feel so fortunate and grateful that i've been able to, you know, have all these experiences in my life and opportunities through fencing. >> reporter: jackie ward, kpix 5. >> the games begin on august 5. >> how neat for jackie to be able to do the story on her brother-in-law her sister's mister. >> good for them. we have some good news in sports. >> did they win? >> i'll tell you in a second. the giants have the worst record in the majors since the all star break. they are 0-6.

dave dravecky going to new york. scoreless in the bottom of the fourth. yankees mark teixiera singles to right and williamson bobbles the ball trying to throw it in allowing gregorius to score from first and an unearned run for johnny cueto but williamson atones for it in the next inning. leading off the fifth, matt with his third home run, tied at one. johnny cueto looked sharp again no earned runs in the 6th inning. he strikes out the side in the fifth and finished with nine ks. game goes to extra innings. yankees load the wastes in the tenth. starling castro out to right and williamson has to battle some of the fans to make this great catch to end the inning. top of the 12th inning now, we go in this one. williamson through the middle scoring trevor brown giving the giants the lead. giants win 2-1. williamson hitting .429 with three home runs and seven rbi on this road

trip. chris sale was scratched from tonight's start versus detroit and sent home because according to reports, he refused to wear these throwback uniforms and then cut them all up! that was during batting practice. chicago was forced to wear other throwbacks. first sem anytime of the bank of the west classic. johanna konta and dominika cibulkova. konta aces cibulkova 6-4. match point second since for konta and cibulkova's returning it's long and konta advances to the first-ever wta tournaments final. she will facing riske or williams as they play tonight. >> it's interesting to be dave dravecky. i remember when he came from the padres. were you watching the game when he broke his arm? >> i did watch that game. that was horrible. >> that was one of the most shocking things i have ever seen in a baseball game.

cut short by a swat team ra. neighbors say a group of ki broke into a vacant house lt night... and a wild house party in san jose cut short by a s.w.a.t. team raid. neighbors say a group of kids broke into a vacant house and it was so rowdy police were called in. the party-goers scrambled breaking bottles and smashing car windshields on the way. officers made a few arrests but most of them got away. san francisco firefighters are on the way to monterey county tonight to help fight a wildfire threatening 1000 homes north of big sur burning 3,000 acres in garrapata state park. another fast-moving brush fire has scorched 11,000 acres in the santa clarita hills. more than 1,000 homes there are threatened. hillary clinton and tim kaine campaigned together for

the first time at a rally in florida. clinton said senator kaine is ready to lead from day one and is a progressive who likes to get things done. that appearance comes two days before the start of the democratic national convention and jamie yuccas joins us live from the host of city, philadelphia. jamie. >> reporter: juliette, we learned today that tim kaine had been a front-runner report democratic ticket for quite a while. the senator, former governor and male -- mayor is from the battleground state of virginia. so he could really help hillary clinton there. but he could also help her in florida which is where they made their debut together today. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: hillary clinton introduced her pick for vice president at a rally in miami saturday. >> for tim kaine is everything donald trump and mike pence are not. >> reporter: she is hoping to

appeal the florida voters. [ speaking spanish ] >> reporter: clinton said unlike donald trump kaine is qualified to do the job. >> from atlantic city to his so- called university, he leaves a trail of broken promises and wrecked lives wherever he goes. >> reporter: the ticket is looking for momentum going to the democratic national convention here in philadelphia. clinton needs to shore up support among single women key players in the election making up more than 20% of the voters in the united states. >> that's what hillary brings to the table is concrete ideas and a path forward to get to them being accomplished. >> reporter: meanwhile, donald trump called kaine a career politician and said he was owned by banks. kaine has a reputation for reaching across the aisle. republican senator jeff flake of arizona tweeted: tried to count the ways i hate at tim kaine drawing a blank congrats to a good man and a good

friend. late this afternoon, donald trump texted his supporters as well about tim kaine saying, quote, president barack obama clinton and kaine the ultimate insiders. he then asked voters to not let obama have a third term. juliette? >> tell us a little about how philadelphia is gearing up for the convention. do you see a lot of activity today? and specifically, security? >> i can tell you i talked to a lot of people around philadelphia. we arrived a couple of days ago and they said you will really be able to feel it on saturday because so many people here in this area go to the jersey shore to be able to cool off. it's been very, very hot here around 100 degrees. and they said if people were in the city, you knew that people were starting to come into town and that's exactly what we saw happen. we also had a huge security sweep happen at the dnc at the wells fargo earlier today. you saw so many journalists starting to arrive in town as well as people now in restaurants and stores. who normally wouldn't be in

this area this time of year. >> thank you. also kpix 5 political analyst melissa caen is in philadelphia. you can look for her live reports from the convention floor starting monday. new details tonight on that teenaged gunman who opened fire in germany yesterday. police say that he had extensively researched mass killings. he was mentally troubled and had no apparent links to isis. his home was raided, no suicide note. they didn't find any reference to religion. in documents they got their hands on. officials say the lone gunman had no political motivations for carrying out the attack. the 18-year-old killed nine people at a shopping center in munich last night. he wounded more than 2 dozen others before turning his illegal pistol on himself. police say his backpack had more than 300 rounds of ammunition. and state officials paid their respects to the victims today. they walked toward the scene of the attack where several

wreaths commemorate those who died. isis is claiming responsibility for a deadly attack on demonstrators today in the afghan capital of kabul. brian webb reports the attack left at least 81 people dead and hundreds more hurt. >> reporter: ambulances carried the wounded to the hospital after the attack. authorities say two suicide bombers detonated bomb vests near a huge protest march in a popular square in kabul. a third attacker was shot by security forces. isis is claiming responsibility. the marchers were demanding that a major electric power line be routed through their impoverished province. government officials had warned the group before the demonstration they may be a target for violence. in the aftermath, investigators collected the clothes and belongings of the dead and injured that were lost during the attacks. afghan's president promises to take revenge on the terrorists behind the bombings. brian webb for cbs news. >> later a spokesman for the afghan president said police

shot one of the two suicide bombers before he could blow himself up. a new clue might help explain the mysterious disappearance of malaysia flight 370. according to new york magazine, a malaysian government document says the pilot practiced the so- called suicide route on his flight simulator at home. the document suggests he did it less than a month before the flight went missing. a plane with 239 people on board disappeared more than two years ago. investigators never did figure out exactly what happened. southwest airlines is extending its discount fares as it slowly recovers from a massive computer failure. a router problem brought down several automated systems on wednesday causing days of cancellations and delays. service is just about back to normal but a lot of stranded passengers have been having a terrible time rebooking because we're in the middle of the summer travel season. a lot of flights are already

the game is now apple's most downloaded app in its first week. it shot to the "pokemon go" craze sweeping the nation is also breaking records for apple. according to apple, "pokemon go" had the most successful launch of any app in the app store's history. and as of tuesday, the game had more than 30 million downloads. it's not showing any signs of stopping. apple says in-app purchases could generate a cool $3 billion for the company over the next year. some say games purchased on "pokemon go" could add up to $3 billion for apple over the next

few years. while you're trying to catch pokemon you might run into the love of your life. a new dating app is catching on with players. >> reporter: you swipe right to catch, you swipe left to run away. sounds like the tinder dating app. but it's not. we're told by the creator, it's as if pokemon and tinder had a baby. >> it's a merger of my two favorite apps and i have already been able to find a few mates and i'm very excited about our endeavors. >> reporter: a new app that just launched two days ago but already exceeded 10,000 matches with 7500 active users. it gives "pokemon go" players find love interests. >> i would say so. this app i found really helpful. >> reporter: here's how it works. when you're out looking for a "pokemon go," you can also catch a mate.

system that's already saved drivers millions. >> reporter: on crowded city streets few things are more hated than parking ticket and that has made 19-year-old josh browder a bit of a hero to thousands of drivers. >> almost overnight it went from 40 people which i was very proud of to a few thousand and then built up from there. >> reporter: he is talking about his website, do not pay. it uses artificial intelligence to beat parking tickets. in his case, necessity was the mother of invention. you get a driver's license. you also start to get parking tickets. >> after about the fourth ticket, um, my parents said to me you're on your own. we're not going to help you anymore. and i didn't have the money to pay for these tickets. >> reporter: what he did have was computer programming skills. he began learning when he was just a kid. skills he used to create a robot lawyer. also known as a bot. >> he would say hello to the bot, he says hello back. >> reporter: so this is artificial intelligence. >> very simple artificial
