shakeup in their party. >> democratic national committee chair woman debbie wasserman schultz announced she will step down at the end of the convention in philadelphia this week. pressure had been mounting for her resignation after wikileaks posted e-mails from democratic officials that appeared to favor hillary clinton. >> i think we need a new leadership in the democratic party. >> reporter: clinton and her running mate tim kaine sat down with cbs news anchor scott pelley for their first joint interview. >> when i see this crooked hillary or i see the locker up, it's just ridiculous. >> reporter: even though clinton will officially become the democratic nominee tuesday, thousands are showing up here in philadelphia to rally for bernie sanders. bruce carter led a caravan from daytona, florida to philadelphia to join fellow sanders supporters in marches and celebrations planned all week long. he says there's no way clinton is getting his vote. >> i know who i am not voting

for. i'm undecided on who i'm voting for. >> reporter: the dnc vice chair will serve as interim chair through the election. live in philadelphia, danielle nottingham. back to you. >> why aren't supporters of bernie sanders giving up their fight? >> they said what bernie sanders has been saying all along about the election system being corrupt and rigged. those e-mails being leaked recently, they feel it proves their point. and they say they want anyone but hillary clinton and they really still feel like they might have a chance. there are protests planned throughout the week. delegates on the floor are planning a protest during the week. there's a lot still happening and they feel like they still have a chance this week to bring bernie sanders as the nominee for the democratic party. we'll see what happens. >> full week ahead.

danielle nottingham in philadelphia. thank you so much. it didn't take long for donald trump to respond to the dnc shakeup. he tweeted, i always said debbie wasserman schultz was overrated. the dems convention is cracking up and bernie is exhausted, no energy left. look for live reports beginning tomorrow. >> and a programming note. tonight's edition of cbs news will be an hour-long extended coverage of the democratic national convention. the next kpix 5 newscast will air at 6:30. after that newscast you can watch 60 minutes. hillary clinton and senator tim kaine just gave their first joint interview to cbs news anchor scott pelley. all happens beginning at 7:00 tonight. we have breaking news in southern germany. one person killed and several others hurt at an explosion in a bar. the blast happened near nuremberg. the cause is unclear. but the city's mayor says it was an explosive device. it's believed the person killed

was the attacker. this comes just days after a deadly shooting in munich. in oakland, a police sergeant is recovering after crashing her vehicle and then getting shot at. the sergeant was responding to a call around 9:30 last night when she collided with another car at 73rd avenue and holly street. then while she was trapped in wreckage, a man not involved in the crash walked up and fired multiple shots but missed. that gunman is still on the loose. >> we're following up with any information, video surveillance footage, witness information, the officer is alert. the officer is talking, sharing information with our investigators. so we can identify and locate this individual. >> the sergeant was hurt in the crash and not from the gunfire. she was released from the hospital today. kpix 5 reporter joe vazquez will have a live report coming up at 6:30. now we want to take you live to southern california for a look at the huge wildfire in santa clarita about 35 miles

north of los angeles. the fire has burned 22,000 acres. at least one person was killed. firefighters discovered the body inside a charred vehicle. the fire has destroyed 18 homes so far. today about 1500 residents were ordered to evacuate. firefighters estimate they've only got the fire about 10% contained. in monterey county, over 10,000 acres have burned north of big sur. parts of highway 1 are closed off as crews battle the spreading flames. there's a mandatory evacuation in effect for the community of palo colorado. kpix 5 devin fehely is at the cal fire command post with more on the fire fight. >> cal fire says it has assembled a massive response to match this massive wildfire. an estimated 800 firefighters from across the state and county. and yet the fire continues to grow and threaten some of the central coast's best known communities. >> reporter: the fire nearly doubled in size overnight, having now burned more than

10,000 acres and is threatening more than a thousand homes and buildings in its relentless march down central california coast. >> with the drought we're having, tree mortality, fire is burning in a critical fashion. >> reporter: because of the remote and rugged terrain, firefighters have largely battled the blaze from the air with helicopters in a seemingly endless loop, from the coast to collect water to the fire lines to release it, and back. while the winds have whipped and spread the fire, it's also pushed it away from more populated areas like the carmel highlands, which remain on alert but have not been evacuated. >> we never want to lose any bit of land to any type of fire so it's good because it's moving away from the homes, but bad because it's moving in to the wilderness area. >> reporter: cal fire warns it could be days, possibly even a week before they get the upper hand. they say they're still at the mercy of mother nature, that a shift in the winds could spell catastrophe for areas that so far have been spared. >> we just want people to be ready and prepared. the reason for that is we want

people to get all their important things in their vehicle so when they actually get a phone call or the sheriff's department comes and tells them to evacuate, they just need to get in the vehicle and leave. >> cal fire is still hoping on help from mother nature. while they say rain is unlikely, they say cooler temperatures or fog could significantly slow down the fire. in salinas, devin fehely, kpix 5. just ahead, a complete stranger rushes to help a man trapped under an suv. we'll hear from the good samaritan. >> it looks like a deal has been reached to sell yahoo. when a formal announcement is expected. that's coming up. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

to save him. kpix 5's maria medina reports on the move that kept the victim alive as rescuers arrived. >> under never seen something like that before in my life. >> reporter: some would say everything happens for a reason, that some people are at the right place at the right time. >> i was just driving home from the grocery store. >> reporter: some would say that about this man. who just moved to the bay area for a job only a week ago. >> and then i pulled up to the stop sign, i saw there was a guy under the car. >> reporter: he just approached redwood shores and bridge parkway in redwood city last night before 10:00, when he saw an suv on top of a man. he ran to check out the victim and called 911. >> it was just my instinct to run out and try to help this guy. >> reporter: he says other good samaritans were on the phone with 911, but something had to be done, or the victim may die before emergency crews arrived. so that's when he jumped in to action. >> i think at some point in time he wasn't breathing.

so as i started jacking the car up, i think his breathing got better and he started breathing. i just heard her say on the phone, oh, the guy is breathing. >> reporter: the one who once wasn't able to breathe was now able to say a few words. emergency crews arrived to rush him to the hospital leaving a group of strangers hoping they'd saved a man's life. >> jacked the car up to help this man. praying and hope that he survives. i'm sure he has a family. >> reporter: maria medina, kpix 5. >> the victim was a pedestrian and so far we don't know his condition. the driver of the suv had a dashcam and two passengers. police are now trying to figure out exactly what happened. yahoo is zeroing in on a buyer and it looks like verizon is the highest bidder. the deal reportedly worth $5 billion. the official announcement is expected tomorrow morning before markets open. yahoo is set to sell its e-mail

the decision came after calls to some members of the russian olympic team will not compete at the summer olympics in rio. it came after calls to ban the entire team after a doping scandal was recently revealed. brian webb has the story. >> reporter: russia's track and field team will not be allowed to compete in the summer games, but the international olympic committee, or ioc, decided that athletes in other sports will have an opportunity to go to rio. each competitor has to meet strict criteria before competing. >> every human being is entitled

to individual justice. >> reporter: the ioc decided to leave it up to individual sports governing bodies to decide if russian competitors are clean. russia's sports minister welcomed the decision, calling it objective but tough. the u.s. anti-doping agency criticized the ruling, believing all russian athletes should be banned from going to rio. a recent investigation showed russia's ministry of sports oversaw a sophisticated system to cover up doping in 30 different sports over several years. during the sochi winter games, the fsb, the former kgb, moved next door to a testing lab, drilled a so-called mouse hole through the wall, and swapped dirty samples for clean ones. the 28 individual sports federations now have just 12 days to analyze each athlete to decide who is in and who is out at rio. brian webb for cbs news, new york. a wild scene caught on

camera in brazil. a man was wrestled to the ground and detained after he tried to steal the olympic torch. the man tried to break through the line of security guards accompanying the torch bearer. the torch will arrive in rio august 4th, one day ahead of the opening ceremony of the olympic games. the coast guard is trying to track down a man accused of making fake mayday calls at a significant cost to the coast guard. he's made 28 fake calls in two years including a couple just a few days ago in maryland. he uses an emergency radio channel. coast guard has spent about half a million dollars sending out crews to respond. the waters of pacifica are a hotbed of marine activity right now. we sent john ramos to check it out and he saw some amazing things. >> reporter: saturday evening a kpix photographer was shooting off pacifica pier when she got this amazing shot of a humpback whale lunge feeding at the surface. we thought it was worth a story.

but it turns out, it's not news to those at the pier. >> i think it's pretty normal especially this time of year, but i think there's larger numbers than usual. >> we see whales all the time but they're not usually that close. >> reporter: this is prime whale watching time at the pier because of all the bait fish like mackerel and sardines that are schooling right up to the surf line. mila has made a hobby of filming the giant visitors and has videos of them feeding on her facebook page. >> you see people [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: at san francisco's aquarium of the bay, marine biologist mike mcgill says an up swelling of cold water has set the table for this buffet and will likely last until winter sets in. >> they've been coming in to our coast about 200 million years so they're smart. they know where to find the

cafe, so to speak. >> reporter: so if you want to do a little free whale watching, head over to the pacifica pier. here's another tip. it will be a lot more fun if you dress like one of the locals. >> we can tell they're from out of town the way they dress. they wear the shorts and don't know where they're at. >> reporter: in pacifica, in july, john ramos, kpix 5. whales aren't the only one enjoying the free meal. locals say if you look closely, you can see an occasional great white shark. >> sounds like a fun for all out on the water. today quite a temperature spread. we've not left the theme of pacifica behind. it was certainly cold out there. not a surprise for july in the bay area. cloud and fog. microclimate in full effect. pacifica this afternoon was at 54 chilly degrees but only 35 miles away there's livermore. 35 miles and almost a 50-degree

difference. that's pretty amazing even for us. as we look over beautiful view of the city skyline with fog filtering through the transamerica pyramid and beginning to obscure the bay. as per usual for this time of the year too. it's 101 right now in concord. oakland, 68. san francisco, 63. warm in the east bay but we'll cool it down a little bit. sea breeze over the next 24 hours going to strengthen a little bit. the temperatures will come down a little bit in the east bay. slightly cooler inland tomorrow. but don't be lulled in to a false sense of security. because we've got more high pressure and warmer temperatures on the way for tuesday. tomorrow looks better in terms of temperatures. in the morning, more extensive low cloudiness. a good extensive layer offshore. even though it burns back to the shoreline later in the day, it will serve to keep things relatively cooler in the east bay. by cooler i just mean low to mid 90s instead of over 100. so tomorrow we'll be in the low 90s inland. sunny and warm. bay will be nice.

upper 70s. along the shoreline, it will be cool with temperatures no better than the mid 60s and some places cooler than that. then what happens, high pressure rebounds so it will be hot again midweek. numbers will be nearing the 100-degree mark by the time we get to tuesday and wednesday. tomorrow it's just an aberration. we'll get back to near 100 degrees inland before long. coastal fog and clouds on monday. burn back to the shoreline. a little bit cooler tomorrow. temperatures come right on back. giants taking on the reds tomorrow. 7:15. looks like a nice night for baseball. mid 50s. sun up tomorrow, 6:08 a.m. in the great valley, 106 at redding. plenty warm in the central valley. tomorrow numbers are not that much above average. concord is 91. 4 degrees above average. south bay tomorrow, mostly in the 80s. that's a bit of a cool change. in the east bay, numbers mostly in the low 90s. not cool by any means. not as bad as it has been. north bay, very pleasant. to the mid 80s around santa

rosa. it's smoking up around ukiah and lakeport. extended forecast, we're going to cool it a little bit tomorrow before we get back to 100 degrees inland tuesday and wednesday. thursday is warm too. we really don't get back to near average temperatures all the way through the weekend. so a warm one ahead if you get any respite tomorrow, enjoy it while you can. that's weather. you know, brian, i left on vacation and the giants were the hottest team in baseball. what happened? and venus reaches the finals at stanford. can she win the title? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

had to be a quiet cross country flight home for the giants who went in to the all star break on fire, came out of it like a team playing anything but a first place team. starters allowed 13 home runs in 43 innings. while the offense was 9-72 with runners in scoring position. masters winner, willett throwing out the first pitch. right on cue. jeff samardzija continues to struggle with the long ball away from at&t. takes advantage of the short portion right field. that's 21st home run of the year for beltran. mark teixeira, he's hitting only .188. connects for a solo shot of his own. just his ninth of the year. samardzija has now given up 15 of his 19 home runs on the road. this pretty much sums up how things have gone since the all star break. top of the 8th, castro makes the

diving stop and gets the out. williamson thrown out trying to get to 3rd base. lousy base running. yankees win 5-2. giants drop 7-8 on that road trip. jesse hahn and the as looking to remain hot. oakland ahead 2-0. ryan dole replaced hahn. faced logan forsythe. ties the game with a two-run shot. that means no win for jesse hahn, despite a great effort. bottom of the inning, billy butler doesn't play every day, played today. just his third home run of the year. turns out to be the game winner. as win 3-2. they're 7-3 since the all star break. this is bizarre. white sox pitcher chris sale has been suspended five games. he'll miss one start by the team after he refused to wear the throwback uniforms chicago was scheduled to wear and then prevented the team from wearing

them by cutting up all the jerseys. ken griffey, jr., mike piazza officially inducted in to the baseball hall of fame today. emotional speeches from both capped off by griffey bringing back his trademark look one final time. >> i want to thank my family, friends, fans, the reds, the white sox, and the mariners for making this kid's dream come true. [ applause ] >> i remember interviewing him as a rookie. i can't believe he's now in the baseball hall of fame. venus williams made her professional debut in oakland when she was just 14 years old. now 22 years later, venus is back in the bay area, still looking like her teenage self again. she's going for her 50th career singles title facing kanta. the first brit to reach the finals in the bank of the west since the reagan administration.

pulled away late to take the first set 7-5. looked like it was going to be a quick match when venus fell behind 4-1 in the second set. she would mount a comeback. she'd been that set 7-5. we had a thriller down at stanford. after the set, kanta left the court for a bathroom break but the extra rest would not help venus. final set, she broke venus twice and went on to win 6-2 for her first career tour title. nascar, jeff gordon out of retirement today at indy replacing dale earnhardt, jr. out with a concussion. gordon finished 13th place. last few laps of the brickyard. final seven laps featured two cautions and a red flag. all those stops couldn't slow down kyle busch who led 149 of the 170 laps to win at indy for the second straight year. he picks up his fourth victory of the season. how about lake tahoe for the final round of the american
