good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. in philadelphia, the final day of the convention is kicking off. don champion joins us. this is a huge night for hillary clinton. >> reporter: now doubt, good afternoon, kenny. no doubt, good afternoon, kenny. tonight is the biggest speech of her career. it will come a day after some of the democratic party's biggest names offered passionate endorsements. [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: with an embrace on the convention stage, president barack obama handed the reins to the democratic nominee. >> there has never been a man or a woman, not me, not bill, nobody, no qualified than hillary clinton to serve as president of the united states of america. [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: voters got to know tim kaine. >> i was born in minnesota and grew up in kansas city. [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: he laid out his resume' and then went on the attack against republican rival donald trump.

[ sarcastically ] >> there's nothing suspicious in me tax returns, believe me. >> reporter: the clinton campaign says the theme of this final day is that the country is stronger together and that all americans should have the opportunity to fulfill their potentials. this woman says her speech could resonate for years to come. >> we have heard the word historic a lot. we're getting bored of it. but it is historic. >> reporter: as ivanka trump introduced her father at the republican convention, tonight will be the democrats' version. chelsea clinton will introduce her mother who will step forward to sent party's nomination. so what does clinton have to do tonight to make the case for herself? well, split can analysts say for one, she has to touch on issues that she is currently

losing to donald trump on like the economy and terrorism. they also say she has to deliver a message of unity, especially as she tries to court independent voters here on out. >> we've seen bernie sanders sanders being very vocal at the convention, clearly not happy with the nominee. explain what happened this morning. >> reporter: another sign of the lingering division at the dnc. this morning, some bernie sanders supporters did disrupt -- [ signal breakup ] [ no audio ] >> reporter: of course, as you mentioned these supporters of sanders have been very upset especially over his endorsement of hillary clinton. they even booed him this week. some of those same protestors this morning would not take off the table the idea of a every protesting on the convention floor tonight. so it will be interesting. >> thank you, don champion live

arrested a man accused of shooting at an oakland police sergeant. kpix 5's anne makovec on how police tracked him down in stockton and the hours long standoff that followed. >> what's your location? >> i just got shot at! [ screaming ] >> reporter: that's oakland police sergeant nadia clark calling dispatch last saturday night. ] > oh, i can't get out of the car. >> reporter: she had just crashed after responding to an accident. investigators say the shooter who wasn't part of the crash shot into the suv and took off. they found him at this home in stockton last night. >> the tenacity of our investigators that led us to there, the cooperation and assistant from the public. >> reporter: they arrested a man at 4 a.m. after a standoff that lasted for about 6 hours. hostage negotiators were making sure that three kids inside the home were safely released. police say the man's motive may have had something to do with

anger toward cops for the recent shootings of black men. >> did make some statements when he conducted that act that would lead me to believe that it is part of that story a little bit. >> reporter: sergeant clark wasn't hit by a bullet that night. but she had been injured in the crash. she has been released from the hospital. police haven't released the name of the suspect or mugshot but he was around 30 years old and did at one point live here in oakland. he is being interrogated before the case is turned over to the alameda county district attorney. anne makovec, kpix 5. oakland police have arrested four people accused of assaulting a man while he was in his car and firing multiple lines on july 9 on 92nd avenue. the victim anthony stevens died. four people were arrested in vallejo and berkeley. a fifth suspect is being sought, tyrone terrell.

the soberanes fire in monterey county is 10% contained after burning 27,000 acres destroying 44 structures. 2,000 more structures are threatened. one person, a bulldozer operator, died. smoke from that fire is leading to air quality concerns in the bay area. roberta has more. >> i want to explain why this is happening. the flames are entrained in a south to north wind aloft. all that's being transported primary into the santa clara valley. then lifting into the eastern portion of our bay area where we have the fourth consecutive "spare the air" day this week alone. it's the 12th of the 2016 season. in addition to that, we have a smoke advisory in place. if you are in the north bay you're saying what smoke? you have good air quality. nonetheless, it leads us to believe we could see another

"spare the air" day on friday. we'll talk about the chances of that occurring and when we'll see relief from the triple digits inland coming up later in this newscast. thank you. kpix 5's maria medina continues our team coverage from san jose with the health warnings there. [ helicopter sound ] >> reporter: that thick heavy smoke and ash from the soberanes fire is stubbornly hovering over santa clara valley. >> smoky. and hazy. >> reporter: this family felt forcedded to stay indoors. >> we stayed indoors. >> reporter: because of the smoke? >> sure. yeah. it was really bad. you could hardly see across it was so bad. >> shortness of breath, wheezing the primary symptom. >> reporter: doctors at regional medical center say they have seen a spike in emergency room patients with respiratory problems. it's especially bad, doctors say, for the old, young and those who already have

respiratory issues. >> try treating it at home but sometimes it's too much and they come to the emergency room. >> we have a reaction to the smoke. used to have asthma a long time ago. you kind of feel it. >> reporter: he says he may not have asthma now, but the smoke still triggers uncomfortable symptoms. >> the throat a little bit kind of itchy and, you know, so the breathing is not as normal as you normally would. >> reporter: their daughter lives with asthma and complained about breathing problems. but she had no idea about the bad air. a good reminder to pay attention to health warnings that could prevent a trip to the e.r. >> you don't know it when you're healthy. it's almost like you're allergic to something, you feel it. it's like nothing to you. >> reporter: and by the way, a "spare the air" day means officials want you to limit any activity that would add to the pollution to the bad air like driving your car or using

aerosol cans. in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. this was the mess on 880 this morning. all northbound lanes were blocked after a fatal accident. they stayed like that for over an hour. according to the chp. someone was walking along the highway when a silver sedan struck and killed him. investigators are trying to determine how and why that person was walking in traffic. all lanes are reopened. a groundbreaking ceremony is just wrapping up in greenbrae for the new $535 million marin general hospital. the construction site is adjacent to the current hospital on bonaire road which has been around since 1952. the new state-of-the-art facility will put the hospital in compliance with new regulations in healthcare and seismic safety. this november, people in mountain view will have a chance to vote on a new rent control ordinance. the mountain view tenants coalition says that its plan would limit rent increases to between 2 and 5% per year. landlords would only be able to raise rents once annually and tenants would get some

relocation assistance if they are evicted and proved not to be at fault. some city council members against the plan may put a competing ordinance on the ballot. new at noon, we are getting word that a former de la salle high school quarterback has died after his first day at the military's grueling ranger school in georgia. the army says second lieutenant from walnut creek died yesterday two days after becoming sick during training at fort benning. he had been treated for an illness caused by low sodium levels. tributes are pouring in on facebook. one person says: another says: "sadly we lost a spartan brother toda i've never been so fortunate to know a person a lit up a room with so much energy and passion." still ahead: you skydiving is dar ... wait t ear how one man going even more extreme. plus still ahead, you think skydiving is daring enough? wait until you hear how one man

were at 90 in throughout the tri-valley. let me get out of the way. this is frank our weather watcher in novato. he is carrying his weather station with his granddaughter there. thanks, frank. he is reporting 82 degrees, pleasant, not as hot as the past few days. you're spot on there, frank. we do however as is similar to the last few days have another "spare the air" day in effect for unhealthy levels of pollution primarily around the east bay and south bay from that fire that continues to burn south of us. the smoke gets lifted up from the south and comes north clipping the santa clara valley and also the east bay so some haze there. smoky conditions and hot. summer temperatures around the bay. "flex alert" in effect as we are flexing these huge muscles of domes of high pressure double barrel keeping the seal with the pollutants trapped and

hot air trapped at the surface. triple digits in various areas. 82 redwood city. topping off 79 to 89 across the north bay. mid-60s in pacifica. your sun goes down at 8:21. and by that time, our temperatures go down with it. 60 to 103 today, a 40-degree span on our temperatures on friday. the weekend begins to cool in our inland areas only because of a trough that wants to clip the northern portion of the bay area. but meanwhile, did someone say weekend? it's the sonoma nationals this weekend at sonoma raceway in the low 80s. did someone say nationals? they are in town against the giants. game time temperature at 60 degrees as cueto takes the mound for the good guys. the nationals have gio gonzalez. that's their secret weapon. he is on the mound on sunday. >> so he is pretty good. >> he's my brother from another mother! breakdown, he lost everything. >> that's going to work really well. >> reporter: during his treatment for ptsd, he came to laurel lipsick for clothes as he got back on his feet as an attorney. >> she makes you feel good about yourself every time you see her. incredible. she is a godsend to vets. >> reporter: laurel serves about three dozen veterans a week at her free clothes closet. >> these will fit. >> reporter: it's at the "veterans resource center of america --next step" program in menlo park. >> they deserve to look fantastic. >> reporter: it all started about three years ago. when she was volunteering at the reception desk and at the computer lab, she discovered just how much the veterans needed clothes and shoes. >> i just always will remember two veterans i met -- one was sharing one pair of shoes, each had one shoe. and another gentleman who just was an amazing veteran who had a half a flip-flop on. and what they've gone through and sacrificed, it broke my heart. >> you like it? >> yeah. >> perfect. >> reporter: so she started "laurel's closet" in 2014.

it's open four hours a week. she spends even more time collecting donations from stores, friends, even sports teams at stanford university, where her husband teaches. >> ties. >> reporter: laurel outfits veterans with business clothes for interviews. >> wow, those are real comfortable. >> reporter: shoes. >> this will work perfectly. >> reporter: and casual wear. for example, laurel looks for athletic clothes for leila raffiee-shirazi. she rides her bike to help with ptsd. >> it makes me feel really appreciated and like someone really, really cares. >> reporter: antoine brooks, site director for the "next step" program, says laurel makes sure the veterans get new or almost new attire, shoes and backpacks. >> she will go out, she will purchase that item for them, and --and she he's a pit bull. i mean, when she's after something, she is relentless. >> reporter: what makes it all worth it? >> the thank you, the look in their eye, the hugs that i get. >> she's everybody's mom. >> reporter: so for outfitting thousands of veterans through
