temporarily closing a station ... while a separate project left travelers confused about how to get in and out of s-f-o. good evening, i'm brian hackney. i'm juliette goodrich. the problems on bart caused added frustration for riders this afternoon... on both sides of the bay. delays were already anticipated in san francisco... because of three station shutdowns planned in advance. but as kpix five's da lin reports... there turned out to be a lot more trouble this afternoon. call it the triple whammy for bart... a scheduled shutdown, a fire, and a protest after this arrest video surfaced. despite all the public service announcements, the scheduled shut down between the glen park and daily city stations seemed to c guard. bart set >> reporter: call it the triple whammy for bart, a scheduled shut down, a fire, and a protest after this arrest video surfaced. despite all the public service announcements, the scheduled shut down caught a lot of people off-guard. bart set up a bus bridge to shuttle passengers.

they need to close so workers can improve the tracks. >> we have to stop here and there's no more stops going downtown. i have to get on the bus. i don't really want to do that. so it messed up my day. >> reporter: around 3:00 this afternoon, a fire shut down the part station for about two -- bart station for about two hours. >> a lot of smoke coming up from the platform area. we found that the protective cover that goes over the third rail along the westbound tracks was on fire. >> reporter: the fire caused system wide delays. >> the delay was almost at every stop. >> reporter: it took them a few hours to bring things back to full-service. over in san francisco, some upset passengers staged a protest around 2:00 at the embarcadero station over this video. they believe bart police used excessive force when they arrested a man on friday. bart says the suspect resisted arrest and fought the officers when they tried to question him

regarding an attempted robbery case. >> if you think driving is going to get you out of the jam, think again. this is one of the long lines to get on the bay bridge out of san francisco much i was in a car earlier this afternoon. it took me an hour just to get on the bridge. kpix 5. off the coast of san francisco, a man was killed after falling off a clip 100 feet below in the water. firefighters had to call in the coast guard because the surf was so rough. the man was later pronounced dead. firefighters were able to rescue the victim's friend after they became stranded on a cliff. she was okay. new tonight, a massive burning is burning east of -- fire is burning east of santa fe. this video was shot on the scene. it is about 40% contained. a wildfire is burning in monterey county destroying more

than 50 homes. the fire that's charred 52 squire miles and -- square miles. fire officials don't see another end to it for another month. it is so big, it's affecting local businesses. >> we get a lot of day business here, too, a lot of people traveling through big sur and that's decreased in the restaurants and general store sales. >> the fire started over a week ago. since then, about 5,000 firefighters were called in to again it financial spreading. 16 people died when a hot air balloon burst in flames and crashed in central texas. we have what witnesses heard before that disaster. >> reporter: investigators surveyed a gruesome scene, what was left after a hot air balloon loaded with passengers caught fire and plunged to the earth. a woman saw the aftermath from her front porch. >> i heard one pop before i stepped out the door and another pop and i'm looking around to see who's shooting

because it sounded like a gun going off. then i looked avenue over there and the next thing i now, i saw a fireball go up. >> reporter: she often sees hot air balloons flying in the area and that the same company involved in the accident had what she called a close call in a neighbor's field about a year and a half ago. she said it was foggy early in the morning, but it had mostly cleared. she believes the popping noises she heard was the balloon hitting power lines located just above the crash scene. >> the way it went up, i don't think any of them even had any idea what was going on. >> reporter: a team of investigators from the national transportation safety board out of washington will try to determine what went wrong. they will treat this area like a crime scene. >> you only get one chance at it. we want to make sure we do everything correctly. >> reporter: the governor says in a statement, he's asking all of texas to join in prayers for the lost.

cbs news, texas. >> this is one of the deadliest hot air balloon accidents on record. three years ago, 19 people were killed in a similar crash. two years ago, ntsb investigators said there should be more federal rules for hot air balloons. they recommended that tour companies should have to get permission to operate and that they be subject to continuing safety over sight as well, but the faa said that kind of regulation wasn't necessary because of low risk. blood and broken glass didn't stop burglars from swiping items from a school store. it happened around 8:30 this morning, a shop on the campus of rancho high school. thieves broke a window and took clothing and cans of code a. later in the afternoon, a 16- year-old boy turned himself in to police but officers say the teen didn't have injuries consistent with blood found at the scene. they believe one or more suspects are on the loose.

surveillance photos show bank robbers. they went into a chase bank and took money at gunpoint. there were two men. both of them are at least 6 feet tall. police have also provided a photo of a blue ford focus similar to the get away car. the fbi is now helping with the investigation. it looks like somebody might be trying to booby-trap mountain bikers on a trail. we report from where bikers found a spike strip earlier this week. >> reporter: the mountain bike whole found the spike stipulate turned it into the sheriff's department this morning, but for those on the trail, it's bikers beware. eric and his son road their mountain bikes on the trails here. they had no idea that another biker had discovered this spike strip laid across the trail on

tuesday just off white hill road in the open space preserve. >> to think someone is putting that up is surprising and shocking and disappointing to be honest. >> reporter: the biker who found and removed the homemade spike strip send me -- sent me those photos. it was anchored in the ground with 7 inch glikes it's obviously alarming. >> reporter: tom says it appears to be an intentional trap. >> the fact that they appear to be screws pointed upwards is a concern, of course, because that could cause injury to anybody using the trails, whether on a bike or hiking or a dog or even a horse. >> reporter: there have been conflicts among users over the years. to promote respect and safety, they launched a campaign called safe trails marin. >> here doing the bested we can -- we're doing the best we can

to be respectful, low down, acknowledge each other with a hello or ringing of the bell. >> reporter: tom says it's a good idea to remind people of that campaign as the sheriff's department investigates who put the spike strip on the trail and why. meantime, eric and his son will be watching out for more than poison oak and atle -- rattlesnakes. >> there's no reason we can't share the trails. >> reporter: they advise people who use the trail to be aware of their surroundings and reported anything suspicious. kpix 5. people familiar with the trails say they have come across various obstacles before, but this is the first time they've heard about a spike strip. hillary clinton and tim kaine are stressing economic issues as they tour pennsylvania and ohio. donald trump will go to those same battleground states in a couple of days. we report. >> reporter: hillary clinton

been charged with dui after slamming his truck into a home overnight. it happened on torrance avenue. it caused quite a scene, neighbors checked out the damage while police investigating. the driver of the truck was taken to the hospital to be treated, but nobody in the home was hurt. the number of zika virus cases in san francisco is up to 8 making july the biggest month for cases so far. health officials say all the residents who have the virus contracted it while traveling abroad. there is no risk to the public, but they are not releasing details on the patients to protect their privacy. the first case was reported in march followed by another in april. this month, six cases were recorded. florida health officials were going door to door testing people for the zika virus. it's the first state to have local transmission of the virus. four were reported this week. as the virus and news spread, public health officials in england are warning pregnant women to hold off on travel to
