live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix 5 news. now at 5. back to back water main breaks cause problems for a berkeley neighborhood. dozens of people are without water as crews work to repair the pipe. good evening. >> the three water main breaks have flooded streets in berkeley. they are all on the same pipe running down cornell avenue near gilman street. crews are trying to fix the damage. hey, jessica. >> reporter: brian, you can see the cast-iron pipe in pieces. here it is on the ground. crews, they have been here since the early morning hours working to fix it. they are almost done with this trouble spot. around the corner there is another trouble spot. just as crews worked to replace this pipe after it burst open

last night, a half a block away another pipe broke this morning. berkeley residents watched the asphalt rising as the water poured through the streets. >> we come out this morning and it's totally rushing down the street, and it's like there is a volcano in the middle of the street that, like, when anybody gets close to it pulses. it's coming up through the street all over the place. >> i lived here for 18 years. i lived through el nino. this is as bad as el nino to see the water at this level. >> reporter: crews turned off the water near cornell and gilman street leaving about 50 families dry for the day. according to east bay mud, the stretch of pipe broke in three places. the cause likely the old age of the cast-iron pipes. >> the pipe that broke here on gilman was 79 years old.

it was installed in 1937, so it's possible that age was factor. >> reporter: east bay mud has been trying to replace pipes before this kind of break happened. one of their projects is just around the corner. >> i hope it doesn't happen again, but for right now you have to be jumping. you just have to a long -- have long legs to jump over the water to get out of your driveway. >> reporter: for residents living here on gilman street, they can expect their water to be restored in about an hour around 6:00. on cornell, they can expect the water to be restored closer to midnight. family escaped a burning house today. at least one of hair pets, a dog, didn't make it. flames broke out of the home on birch grove drive at 12:30 this afternoon. the fire went to two alarms before crews got it under control before one. firefighters were able to save two of the family's dogs leading to a joyful reunion

with the owners, but unfortunately one of their dogs died. >> there were reported four animals in the structure. we were able to rescue two. unfortunately, we had an unsuccessful resuscitation attempt on the third and the fourth is unaccounted for at this time. right now we have three people displaced for the evening. >> no one else was hurt. video from a kpix viewer shows heavy smoke from the sierra fire. it's burned more than 100 acres and is 75% contained. firefighters are using aircraft to douse the flames. the fire broke out p.m. near alum rock park. a deadly wildfire burning near big sur is larger than the city of san francisco. it's charred more than 38,000 acres around the soberanes creek. more than 5,000 firefighters are battling that blaze, which is just 15% contained. one person was killed. dozens of homes have been destroyed while the blaze has shifted away from coastal

homes. officials say thousands of structures are still threatened. >> the fire is burning in an area that doesn't have a lot of fire history. currently it's slope driven and field driven. the fields are dry. we are coming out of a long drought. the tree mortality is a issue in california. >> officials tell us the fire could continue for weeks. with tension against police at an all-time high nationwide, here in the bay area one police chief is taking action before it's too late. kpix 5's maria dina is live. >> reporter: the chief wants his community get home safely every night. he also wants his officers to get home every night as well. outside a church in san jose a scene different than the recent violent images across the nation. police officers and the

community really getting to know each other. >> my goal really was just to make sure that our community knows that we care. >> reporter: san jose police chief eddie garcia at coffee with a cop. >> we have a great community relationship in our city and we have to continue to build on it and not take that for granted. >> reporter: but the pastor of eman i am baptist church wanted his congregation to get to know the department deeper than that. >> given the right opportunity, they will make great changes. >> reporter: and invited the chief to speak during sunday's service about the changes he plans to make in his department. >> we are so much more than the uniform we wear. >> after ferguson, we noticed there were some issues. instead of waiting for them to come to san jose, we said what can we do to get ahead of it. >> reporter: it's a talk every police chief and sheriff he says needs to have with their community see change. >> i think it's important to get out into the community that you serve, to build relationships.

and i think it was wonderful. >> reporter: and so the chief talked about making several changes in his department, including training his officers to deescalate a situation before using force. he seemed honest with the congregation. they applauded several times. one of the things he said was that his officers are biased for human beings, so of course they are going to be biased, but he wants them to recognize their biases and not react to those biases. >> all right. a weekend long bart closure in daly city has led to big delays. a bus bridge has been running between the stations all weekend. it's the first of seven planned closures along that stretch of track. thousands of janitors could go on strike if a new contract deal is not reached by tonight. hundreds of people protested last thursday at 1st and market streets in san francisco. they blocked traffic at the peak of rush hour. union members are trying to

negotiate better salaries and benefits. if no deal is reached tonight, they will meet tomorrow to discuss a possible strike. thousands of long distance runners hoofed it in today as marathon in san francisco. they set off from the ferry building before dawn and headed along the embarcadero. they ran across the golden gate bridge and back again, continuing through golden gate park and various neighborhoods. after covering more than 26 miles, they reached the embarcadero again and crossed the finish line. runners caught their breath and then they talked about the race course and their performance. >> finished about four and a half hours. my eighth year now. still shooting for under four hours. but, you know, getting there eventually. >> a wonderful course. beautiful running across the golden gate. it's really special. >> the winners are from the bay area. makes styles of san francisco finished in over two minutes -- [ laughter ] wow!

degrees. in the bay 70s. that low pressure trough, might get a few thunderstorms by tuesday afternoon in seattle. for us it's going to keep temperatures mild. about where we should be this time of the year. here's why. the early morning clouds, we begin cloudy tomorrow morning 7 a.m. here's how it looks. the low clouds fill in the bay and go up through the plain through santa rosa. but after sunrise, back they go to the shoreline. we will get early clearing tomorrow. better clearing than we had today. strong onshore flow means it stays mild inland with numbers near seasonal averages. cloudy coast. warm inland. will continue so. it will be cool and cloudy all week long. temperatures remaining about the same. the usual summertime pattern all week long. overnight lows mid 50s with a few low 50s scattered here and there. sun up quarter after six. sunny day for inland country.

redding 102. 103 at fresno. the numbers for the bay area are close to average. 64 in the city. concord 85. 82 san jose. fairly pleasant day. east bay the same. a little bit warmer. brentwood all the way up to 94 tomorrow. north bay very nice. temperatures in the mid 70s. santa rosa a little bit warmer. and for ukiah and clear lake in the mid 90s. in the extended forecast we are going to be going with the usual fog and low clouds in the morning and sunshine in the afternoon. and by next weekend it will be pretty much the same. i guess you could say in terms of high temperatures and low temperatures and weather extremes, we're pretty much par for the course. that, ladies and gentlemen, is a transition to this guy. >> that is excellent writing, brian. very impressive. after losing two straight, the giants try to split the series with the nationals. which 49er quarterback is getting the starting reps right now? golf major year. final major of the year. it's a thriller.

hendrick stinson and defending pga champion jason day chasing jimmy walker trying to win his first major. walker had to play two rounds after rains delayed players yesterday. he shot 68 in the morning round. walker then parred his first nine holes in the final round. then on the bunker on 10 hold out the shot for birdie and a 2 shot lead over stinson and day. then on 11 after day pulled

within 1 shot of the lead, walker rolls in the long birdie to go back up by 2. later, on 17 walker barely curls in the put for birdie and he heads to 18 with a 3 shot lead. look at jason day, who saw the leaderboard, and he knew his chances were slim unless he could eagle 18. and here's his eagle putt to move to 13 under. 1 back of walker. so walker's got a par 18 to win the tournament. and on his second shot from the fairway walker pulled out a fairway wood instead of laying up, and he found the rough on the right-hand side. would he collapse in search of his first major? he played smart from the rough. from behind the flag, up over the trap, and that's safe condition. he basically has to get up and down to win his first major. the first putt leaves him with

a 3-footer for the win. no problem. walker goes wire to wire and wins by 1 shot over jason day, and that is his first major title. the giants won't look back on july with fond memories. bruce bochy at the ballpark. i don't know if he got the right hat size. matt cain had his best start since coming off the disabled list. struck out the side in the third. he tossed five shutout -- did not allow a hit in five shutout innings. was lifted after throwing 93 pitches. gio gonzalez a fastball off the wall in right. his fifth extra-base hit of the year. cain hoping for his 100th win. henter pence a ground ball to third. should be the third out. anthony rendon throws it away and jeff margin, who pinch ran for bumgarner, scores to give the giants a 2-0 lead. top of the ninth.

3-1. casilla time. he blows the fastball past daniel murphy to end it. 24th save for casilla. two up on the dodgers now. the giants win 11-13 in july. the indians were big winners before they took the field after they acquired andrew miller from the yankees. corey glover did his part. seven strikeouts in seven shutout innings. sonny gray wasn't nearly as sharp. mike napoli makes him bay pay with a two-run shot. napoli getting -- no, he has 24 homers this season. it wouldn't get better for gray. he gives up four singles in the fourth. gray's e.r.a. is now 5.84. that is the worst among qualified starters in baseball. strange days indeed.

most peculiar, mama. the indians beat the a's 8-0. the 49ers opened training camp today. how did the coach handle it? split repetitions between them in the first practice. >> you just got to make the most of your opportunities. this isn't my first quarterback competition i have been in. definitely won't be the last. you just got to make the most of your opportunities and go out there and have fun. >> he took over for kaepernick the middle of last season and went 3-5 in eight games. kaepernick has had three separate surgeries since november. the 49ers couldn't trade him in the off-season. here he is heavier than he has been in his career and ready to win his job back. >> yeah, definitely put a lot of weight back on. i don't look like my high school self any more. i feel like i look more like an adult now. >> reporter: how many calories would you say?
