walked off the job this morning. kpix 5's maria medina is live outside the courthouse with the chaos that the strike is causing. maria? >> reporter: yeah, michelle. expect a lot of delays at courthouses today. one lawyer told us that in some criminal cases, some people could be told to come back. and in the worst-case scenario, some suspects could be released from jail. [ chanting ] >> reporter: instead 6:00ing into work today -- >> we won't take it anymore! >> reporter: -- nearly 400 santa clara county court workers are walking the picket lines. >> it's a very chaotic morning. >> reporter: steven clark is the criminal attorney who says his three cases scheduled today are now in limbo. >> i think all the judges are trying to funnel the cases into one or two courtrooms but you're talking about hundreds of cases. so obviously, there's going to be a lot of delays this morning. >> i dedicated my life to this place. i have been here almost 20

years. >> reporter: but the workers, like anna sapp, said they had no choice but to strike. they said they deserve more pay after going 8 years without a raise. >> i live in the garage in my home and renting my home. that's embarrassing and sad. there's hundreds of us that center to go through that. >> reporter: as the workers walked the picket lines, a potential juror joined the crowd lining up at the door, not knowing what to expect inside. >> the judge yesterday told us that weuld most likely be in the courtroom today. after this i'm not sure. >> reporter: she says if the strike continues it could have a catastrophic impact including the possibility of suspects in jail being released until they can get in front of a judge. >> it's really an unprecedented situation where you have a criminal justice system really not able to move forward for a

large county and hundreds of cases. >> reporter: as far as how long this strike will go on, the union president said, who knows? it could go on for days. now, there are nine courthouses in santa clara county. we reached out to the spokesman and we have yet to hear back from him. live in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. >> one of those cases affected by the strike is antolin garcia- torres, the man accused of murdering 15-year-old sierra lamar. he was set to appear for a hearing today at 9:00. because of the strike, it was postponed to another date. dna evidence allegedly linked him to her kidnap and murder, her body never found. she disappeared from morgan hill in 2012. today donald trump is going after republicans who have been critical about his feud with a goldstar family. as craig boswell reports, the white house, now even more republicans are distancing themselves from the gop' nominee

from a nearby residential area, golden bear estates. voltage lines are threatened and route 128 is shut down between monticello dam and pleasant valley road. no word when it will re-open. we are learning the man behind the wheel in yesterday's deadly merced county bus crash had a history of questionable driving. according to dmv records his commercial driver's license was revoked for three months last year after an unspecified serious traffic violation. in a news conference that wrapped a few minutes ago, investigators from the ntsb say they are examining every variable that could have contributed to this wreck. yesterday we learned the bus involved in the crash had safety problems with the brakes when it was inspected back in april. four died and 18 others were seriously injured when the bus slammed into a pole. you can see that pole tore down the middle of the bus slicing it in half. a proposed plan for a pedestrian walkway in san francisco gaining some footing but kpix 5's anne makovec tells

us, there are still roadblocks. >> reporter: right now, it's the top of a construction zone for the new central subway and people are forced to walk around it. but in 2019, it could be primed for pedestrians, a photo of one proposal for the lower stockton street improvement project obtained by the "san francisco examiner" shows this stretch of stockton street between geary and market without any cars. >> probably safer that way. >> reporter: right now, the closure to cars is temporary. pedestrians get the chance to bask in the thoroughfare every winter when the sfmta lays down astro turf to help businesses get holiday shoppers in the door. >> felt like a european kind of pedestrian zone. and, um, it just sort of changed the whole atmosphere. it felt like a neighborhood. >> reporter: some leaders in chinatown north of this corridor are concerned that closing the road for good would be bad for car traffic. but it could give a boost to public transit. this drawing shows cement

sections carved out for buses but paul rose with the sfmta says this is one of many options. >> what it's going to mean for transit, walking and biking, there are a lot of options out there and we're not going to move forward and make a final decision without talking to all the communities along the corridor. >> reporter: the plan will have to go through a public hearing. in san francisco, anne makovec kpix 5. it's another step forward for governor brown's controversial plan to build twin tunnels under the sacramento-san joaquin death that. yesterday the department of water resources released a blueprint detailing the potential environmental impact. two federal agencies will review that report to determine if the plan violates the endangered species act. if completed, the tunnels would divert water from the sacramento river to central and southern california. a boeing 777 burst into flames moments after landing. coming up, the investigation into what happened. >> pope francis wants to look

arab emirates flight and the fiery aftermath. one firefighter was killed while responding to the blaze. as jonathan vigliotti reports, all 300 passengers and crew escaped without injury. >> reporter: the emirates airline flight from india came to a fiery stop on the runway as people inside dubai international airport looked on in horror. the plane came down on its belly. video posted online shows the boeing 777 erupting into a massive fireball blowing off one of the wings. firefighters hosed down the smoldering fuselage. most of the top melted way. amazingly, all 3 -- most of the top melted away. amazingly, all 300 on board including three minutes were evacuated safely within a minute. >> the smoke was coming in. immediately, they asked us to leave. >> reporter: the pilot made an announcement he needed to make

an emergency landing because of a landing gear problem. airport officials say there were strong winds and blowing dust as the plane approached the runway. the exact cause of the crash- landing is still under investigation. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, london. >> today's crash in dubai looks similar to the asiana airlines crash at sfo back in 2013. flight data recoveredders revealed that flight -- recorders revealed that flight was too low and too slow for a safe landing. it burst into flames on the landing strip. two people died in the crash and another later died of her injuries. a possible breakthrough for women in the catholic church. pope francis is making more changes. or what this means for the faith and for women. marlie hall reports. >> reporter: pope francis says his decision came after intense prayer and mature reflection, to appoint a panel to study the idea of women deacons in the

roman catholic church. religion professor woman is the only american on the commission and said she has been waiting for this moment for years. >> the church would be making a great statement about the dignity and place of women in the world. >> reporter: known for his progressive stances, pope francis's decision to look into the possibility of women deacons differs from the views of his predecessors. he first entertained the idea last may after meeting with a group of women from various religious orders. the idea for the commission originally came from the nuns, not the pope himself. he agreed to the study but the vatican says not to expect change anytime soon. deacons are ordained ministers who can preach as well as preside over weddings and funerals. but they cannot say mass. historians say the idea of women in this role is not new to the church. >> there are several popes in the middle ages who wrote to bishops giving them the authority to ordain women deacons.

>> so there is precedent for this. great precedence for including women in the diaconate. >> reporter: she says the idea can transform not only how women are seen in the church but in society, as well. marlie hall, cbs news, new york. for some, it's all about "pokemon go." for others, it's pokemon go away! kiet do on the bay area businesses hoping to cash in. >> reporter: are you doing what i think you're doing? it's been nearly a month and for some businesses pokemon reality is setting in. a candy store in campbell has seen a flood of foot traffic since being dubbed a pokemon gym drawing in players like 16- year-old jack thomas. while you're here do you think you'll buy candy or stop in? >> yeah, sure. why not? yeah. >> reporter: thing, jack and his friends never did go inside. >> -- thing is, jack and his friends never did go in. there is a spike in sales of energy drinks but sales last month have been flat.

>> that's where the rubber meets the road. will a businessman pay to have a pokemon presence at his location? >> it's a tough question because i'm sure it's not going to be cheap. and i have a low margin business. so i have to take those things seriously. >> reporter: now a new jersey man has filed a class action lawsuit against niantic, the makers of the game, complaining about virtual pokemon showing up on his property and attracting players. the lawsuit said the company has, quote, shown a flagrant disregard for the foreseeable consequences of populating the real world with virtual pokemon without seeking the permission of property owners. the parent company says they are updating the game so it's fun for players but respects the real world. we didn't hear back from niantic so it's unclear how it chooses pokemon on how to opt out. back in campbell, there are thoughts about luring the players into the world. >> it's a funny world. hopefully it will be fun. >> reporter: in campbell, kiet do, kpix 5. ro, you're seeing less pokemon players near your

house? >> i have a gym, what's considered a pokemon gym across from my house and we had crowds a couple of weeks ago and yesterday we had two. so maybe the craze is dying down. i'm in search of some better air quality. take a look at this. right now our live weather camera from the transasia airways, looking east you can't see mount diablo. usually it's visible but the air quality is compromised due to a fire to the south and one to the north now. we have 73 in santa rosa. 81 degrees at this lunchtime in livermore. up to 63 in san francisco. 24 hours ago, we were at 59. air quality moderate and even though the north bay reports good air quality, this photo was sent in to me by our weather watcher dana. and dana is in novato. she says it's 58 degrees there and she -- 85 degrees there and she smells smoke in the air
