despite an uptick in zika cases and a historic warning from the cdc, miami's mayor says -- >> i think it's now because i don't think there are mosquitoes here. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, donald trump is trying to put a lid on reports that his campaign is in chaos, but even some of his closest allies say trump is making costly mistakes and republican party officials are reportedly beyond frustrated. hena daniels is here in new york and has more on that. good morning, hena. >> reporter: good morning. donald trump is trying to get his campaign back on track amid signs of turmoil within the gop. yesterday, trump's own running mate split with him over his refusal to endorse house speaker paul ryan, while another republican announced he would

not vote for trump come noember. campaigning in florida wednesday, donald trump sought to refocus attention on rival hillary clinton, blaming her for the creation of isis. >> she should get an award from them as the founder of isis. >> reporter: and tying her to accusations that the obama administration made a so-called ransom payment to iran in january, around the same time four american hostages were released. >> $400 million in cash. how does the president do that? how do you do that? this was all started by crooked hillary clinton. >> reporter: the attacks came amid signs of a deepening rift between the gop nominee and members of his own party. yesterday, illinois representative adam kensinger became the latest republican refusing to support trump in november angry over his feud with a gold star family. trump's own running mate mike pence also split with him and endorsed house speaker paul ryan. >> i strongly support paul ryan and strongly endorse his re-election.

>> reporter: a fox news poll out wednesdays saying trump is now trailing clinton ten percentage points nationally. speaking at a denver-based tie company, the democratic nominee attacked her opponent's business record. >> i would really like him to explain why he paid chinese workers to make trump ties. this is one of them. it's got his name on it, of course. >> reporter: today, clinton will continue to talk about jobs and the economy at an event in las vegas. one silver lining for the trump campaign. the billionaire candidate reportedly raised $82 million in july, mostly from small donations. the clinton campaign raised about $90 million. >> hena daniels here in new york, thank you, hena. one issue that has triggered a fire storm of criticism of donald trump is his clash with the family of captain humayun khan, a muslim american soldier killed in iraq. chan -- khan's former commander

called him a wonderful person and a great officer. in an op-ed published in "the washington post," it is written this family is our family and any attacks on this wonderful gold star family is an attack on all patriotic and loyal americans who have sacrificed to make our country great. any politically or racially motivated attack on the khan's is despicable and un-american. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk about some of the issues facing donald trump with his campaign chairman paul manafort. yesterday, trump campaigned in daytona beach, florida, and weighed in on the zika virus crisis and efforts by governor rick scott to fight the disease. >> i think he is doing a fantastic job and he is letting everyone know exactly what the problem is and how to get rid of it. he is going to have it under control and probably already does. >> scott ordered free zika testing statewide to help pregnant women. the tests are available at county health departments. meanwhile the obama administration is warning congress that money

to fight the zika virus is running out and resources to create a vaccine would be gone by the end of the month. 15 confirmed cases of zika in a miami neighborhood. believed to be the first to be caused by mosquito bites. the federal government is warning pregnant women to stay away. but miami's mayor told our david begnaud the area is safe. >> they have fumigated all of the corners of this area and i think that winwood now is safe. i think that -- >> reporter: do you think it's safe for pregnant women to come here? >> i think it's safe now because i don't think that there are mosquitoes here. >> police are handing out flyers to tourist in the winwood neighborhood. meanwhile the pentagon says 33 members of the military has contracted the disease during deployment overseas. one woman was killed and five others wounded when a man with a knife started stabbing people in london.

the attack started late yesterday in central london near the british museum. police used a taser to subdue and arrest a 19-year-old male suspect. >> early indications suggest that mental health is a significant factor in this case and that is one major line of inquiry. but, of course, at this stage, we should keep an open mind regarding motive and, consequently, terrorism is a motivation remains but one line of inquiry for us to explore. >> london police say an additional 600 armed officers are being deployed across the city to protect against the threat of attacks. london's mayor says the public should remain calm, but vigilant. the first-ever federal terrorism charges have been brought against a law enforcement officer in the united states. nicholas young is an officer with the district of columbia transit police and charged with attempting to provide materiel support to a terrorist group. jeff pegues reports. >> reporter: the transit police officer who appeared in court was already in custody when

investigators swarmed his fairfax, virginia, home. nicholas young may have been expecting this day. according to court documents, five years ago, he told an undercover officer that if law enforcement ever searched his home, they would have issues because he was stockpiling weapons, and that is what amphetamines, ballistic vests and assault rifles were for. authorities do not believe young was planning an attack on washington's transit system, but their investigation does allege he was providing financial support to isis. according to court papers, young bought gift cards to give to isis operatives who he thought would use them for untraceable mobile messaging accounts. he actually was giving them to the fbi. young allegedly wrote, glad it came through. getting rid of device now. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. secretary of state john kerry has been asked to testify before a congressional committee about a 400 million dollar cash payment to iran. the money was paid to iran last

january, about the same time that iran freed four american prisoners. it's reported that justice department officials objected to sending cash on a plane to iran because it could be perceived as a ransom payment. the white house denies the money was ransom. >> no, it was not. it is against the policy of the united states to pay ransom for hostages. >> the administration says the money was being returned to settle a decade's old arms sale that never went through. hurricane earl is storming central america this morning. it made landfall in belize early this morning after hitting northern honduras with heavy rain and high winds. two people are missing after a fishing boat cap-sized in the caribbean. some streets in southern mexico are flooded. forecasters say earl will also reach northern guatemala. >> five u.s. aviation officials are joining the investigation of a crash landing in dubai.

one firefighter died yesterday trying to douse the burning airliner. the 300 on board escaped with seconds to spare. elizabeth palmer has more. >> reporter: skidding down the runway on its belly, the first video of emirates 521 shows it billowing smoke and minutes later, it exploded. just before that explosion, smartphone video inside the cabin shows alarm, but no panic. some people even take down their luggage. but 60 seconds later, the cabin crew sounding desperate. leave the luggage, she is shouting! jump! >> jump! >> jump! >> reporter: outside, you can see the neighboring emergency chute, apparently unusable. still the 282 passengers all got away safely. amazing, as not all of the exits were working. in fact, this passenger told cbs there was only one. >> everybody get out through one way. single door.

on the struggles to keep up with trump's headlines this week. well, the current president has granted a record number of clemencies and the pope weighs in on gender identity. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the washington post" reports president obama's order to free 214 prisoners. almost all were convicted of nonviolent drug crimes. it was the biggest one-day clemency order in more than a century. the president has commuted the sentences of 562 federal inmates, more than the previous nine presidents combined. politico reports a supreme court action in a transgender bathroom case. the justices say a transgender male can be blocked from the boys bathroom at his virginia high school, at least for now. the court wants time to decide whether to hear the student's discrimination case. "the new york times" reports criticism of pope francis by lgbt leaders. the pontiff said schoolchildren are being taught that they may choose their gender, and called it terrible. the head of an lgbt group says that shows dangerous ignorance

on the cbs "moneywatch" now. apple gets rid of the gender pay gap. and nike tees up an exit from golf equipment. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the price of oil jumped in a survey showed that private employers added a healthy amount of jobs in july. that sent the major stock indices higher. the dow broke a seven-day losing streak and gained 41 points. the s&p finished six points higher. the nasdaq rose 22 points. walmart reportedly in talks by jet.com, an online retailer that launched last year to take on amazon.com. jet operates kind of like online costco or sam's club. membership costs 50 dollars a year. members are supposed to save about 10% to 15% on products. walmart is trying to boost web sales as it competes with amazon. apple became the latest company to pay men and women the same salary for the same job.

apple announced that it achieved pay equity yesterday. apple also says minorities are in the same as their white and male counterparts. in april, facebook and microsoft said they had no gender pay gap. starbucks is reportedly addressing staff concerns about the hours that they work. staff had criticized starbucks for cutting back hours. buzzfeed reports starbucks promised its employees consistent and reliable hours and is asking store managers to help resolve the issue. nike is getting out of the golf equipment business. nike says it will stop make making clubs and golf balls and bags and instead focus on shoes and apparel. that means that pro golfers like tiger woods and rory mcilroy who signed deals with nike still have to get some new clubs. >> if you like nike equipment, get it while you can. it's about to run out. >> but the gear could be getting better. all of those cool shirts. >> that is good for me for

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. u.s. soccer's bid for back-to-back gold medals is off to a solid start. the women beat new zealand 2-0 in its opening match. with a first half goal from carli lloyd and an alex morgan goal just seconds into the second half. next up for usa is france on saturday in belo horizonte. they got the win but they also got a little controversy.

every time the ball got close to keeper hope solo, the crowd erupted in boos and chants of zika. solo was outspoken online in the run-up to rio over the mosquito-born virus. here are the two tweets that put brazil on her bad side. with #department of defense and zika proof. 11 israeli athletes killed during the 1972 olympics are being remembered at this year's games. the widows of two victims took part in a ceremony yesterday in rio de janeiro. the athletes were taken hostage and killed by a palestinian terrorists during the munich games. michael phelps will add a chapter to his olympic achievements tomorrow night. team usa chose the swim star to carry the flag during the opening ceremonies in brazil. he has won 22 medals in four olympics but he has never attended the olympic opening ceremonies because his events follow too closely afterwards. coming up on "cbs this morning," we go to rio and catch

a luxury apartment building in san francisco is leaning toward the pacific and it's sinking quickly. carter evans reports. >> reporter: the views from the millennium tower were well worth the $2.1 million pat and jerry dobson paid for their two bedroom apartment, they say, until they learned their 58-story building is cracking and sinking. >> at this point, the building has sunk 16 inches. >> reporter: but it's also leaning? >> right. >> reporter: how far is it leaning? >> it's leaning 15 inches out toward the west from here. >> reporter: the tower has been home to sports celebrities like

joe montana and hunter pence and rated one of the top residential buildings in the world. >> the problem is, i guess, that the building is not tied into bedrock. >> reporter: rae sullivan is a geologist with san francisco state university. he leads tours of the city's sinking and leaning buildings and when it comes to the millennium tower. >> i would be concerned if it accelerates and the tilting continues. >> reporter: it turns out, san francisco's leaning tower has a lot in common with the world's most famous leaning tower where engineers used a counterbalance to help straighten it, but millennium hasn't discussed any plans for a fix. in a statement, millennium's partner says the building was designed and constructed to the extraordinary high standards established by the city and county of san francisco for this type of structure. the company blames a new transit center across the street for destabilizing its luxury tower. there is a lot of finger pointing going on right now, but

[ laughter ] >> um, did the bridge just wink at him? >> you know -- >> the bay bridge brings it every morning. >> it's like we opened up the bottle and the genie popped out! isn't it like that? we love it! good morning. rise and shine! out the door the bay bridge does look fine although we have some overcast conditions from the coast to the bay. in fact, that marine layer has marched locally inland a good 50 miles. it's overcast in livermore at 55 degrees. later today, numbers are coming down by a good 10 degrees away from the bay. you will feel the difference today from the cloud cover in pacifica in the mid-60s to the partial clearing across the bay to the sunshine and refreshing temperatures inland. the full forecast is coming up. we have a traffic alert out there northbound 680 at monument boulevard. all lanes are blocked. and there is an injury involved so we'll get more updates on that later in
