5:00 am
through the year of mercy designated by pope francis, going on now through throughout this . good morning. welcome to "mosaic ." we have been journeying through the year of mercy designated by pope francis going on now through november 2016. throughout this year, we're focusing on mercy of god and how christians are called to receive and witness to that mercy. in the past episodes, we have explained what this year of mercy all about. different events for people to engage in the works of mercy as well as activities occurring throughout the archdiocese of san francisco where people can learn about and engage in this year of mercy more fully. today we have a special guest with us, bishop william justice
5:01 am
who will prayer for this year of mercy and allow that to become action. join us when we come back. ,,,,,,,,,,
5:02 am
who will be discussing withe how we can prayerfully enter in . welcome back to "mosaic ." today we have a special guest bishop justice. he will show us how to help us respond to jesus' invitation to love our neighbor and share mercy of god with one another. bishop justice is a native of massachusetts and moved when he was 4 years old. he graduated from st. gregory elementary and high school in san mateo and later in cemetery school. he was ordained into priest hood in 1968 and served as a young priest in number of san francisco and san mateo county
5:03 am
parishes. since then, bishop justice has been pastor of parishes in san francisco and also in south san francisco. he's had various administrative appointments including director of permanent, most recently victor for clergy. in 2008 he was named by pope benedict 16th. thanks for being here >> great to be here. >> we're talking about the year of mercy. when pope francis declared this, words were inspiring to us. since you became a bishop, you had the motto of god's mercy endures forever. for you this is personally very important. when you heard pope francis declare this year of mercy, was there anything about at this time that stood out to you that you were inspired by and excited
5:04 am
by? >> i think the thing that was most inspirational to me was the pope's calling to remember that it's a core thing we need to live out in our lives. especially as priest and bishop to minister in a way that is healing, that's forgiving, that's caring, that is mercy. so god's mercy endures forever is for the of that. that's really -- when i reflect back, that's what intrigued me to become a priest i think. i wanted to help people. i wanted to share god's mercy with people. that goes way back to 1960 when i entered the seminary. that's always been with me that each person, each part of our
5:05 am
parishes and world needs god's mercy and that i enjoy and love to share that mercy. what happens is they give you mercy back. so it helps me to be a better person and priest. >> yeah. people's response to pope francis and so many of his messages, especially this message of mercy has really had huge impact on people. they've been responding so heart feltly to it. i'm wondering for you, are there any words of pope francis that inspired you or stood out that you've been carrying with you throughout this year of mercy? >> the number one is his challenge that says the beating heart of the church is mercy. that if we have anything we should have heart. we've got to have heart.
5:06 am
the old song, huh? mercy is the way to share that. it isn't necessarily have the most beautiful church. that's good if you have that and everything else, but how are we sharing the heart of god that we meet in jesus christ which is mercy. that sticks with me. >> yeah. those words of pope francis that mercy is beating heart of the gospel. for me, when you hear those, you right away think of images of sacred heart that come up a lot. i remember the first time i was in rome there's that famous image of the sacred heart i think we have. they're going to put it up. that image and so many others like it, that's what i think of when i think of mercy has the
5:07 am
beating heart of gospel this image can be startling. this is what we're called to be first and foremost to put forth love and heart first of all and put that first and foremost in our ministries and everything that we do and say. it. >> right. one of the most beautiful churches in paris is to celebrate the revival of french and image of sacred heart. that got spread all over the world with the missionaries of france and the beating heart. >> yeah. it seems so many people are starving for that message of love at the core of the gospel. jesus said the most important commandment i give you is love god, love yourself. this is the first and foremost
5:08 am
the most important thing. >> right. i think what that leads to is the dignity of the person. dignity of the group and whatever the nation is mercy comes and is there because respecting that person is a creature of the lord, creature of god. in christ, we meet the face of god. in seeing jesus preaching, challenging, healing, forgiving, giving mercy and in dying for us and rising we might have life to the fullest. we touch the dignity of each person. our own dignity and the person. there's kind of like a love relationship going back and forth between each person we
5:09 am
care for or treat as a human being. god's love and god's beating heart there. >> definitely. to extend that love and be front other people in everything that we're doing takes a lot of attention and also a certain cultivating prayer life. how to do that, we're going to talk more after we come back after the short break. . we found bart's latest challenge. one-third of engineering jobs are now vacant. beneath the free way, a rise
5:10 am
in the homeless. expect original reporting from kpix news expect more. mother: good job! is it pretty? how's your hair, is it pretty? it's pretty!
5:11 am
. welcome back to "mosaic ." we're journaling through the year of mercy. we're talking about the year of mercy and how to prayerfully enter into this year of mercy and allow that prayer to transform into action. when i think about hope francis
5:12 am
especially, when -- it's not just his words that we talked about last segment that has a resonance with people, it's also the heart he brings to it. you can just tell. so often times i'm working in young adult ministry with adults 18 to 40. i know within that ministry and so many others in the catholic church. when we work with people, we hear the question how to pray. it's more learn how to pray in the way that transforms us. i think a lot of people struggle with that. you can learn me and the words of it. learn the mass is a prayer. learn the words and actions of that and what that sacrament means. without this that pope francis is such a good example of, it can all become very meaningless
5:13 am
and become very hollow. that's when i think a lot of people go to mass and feel, how do we bring our heart into that? how do we cultivate this interior life? i'm wondering how you would share with our viewer, what is prayer, and how do you begin to cultivate a prayer life? >> very -- somewhere along my priesthood life, someone gave me a prayer which i love. it's sitting down with jesus and father having a cup of tea with him, glass of wine or beer or chocolate chip cookies and milk or something. it's that -- it's a conversation between the god who made us, who loves us, who is merciful to us,
5:14 am
who fills us with his spirit and ourselves. god is love. where this is love this is god. as john says, i think first john, it's you have nothing to fear. people who are afraid are not filled with love yet. just to be able to relax with god. maybe it might be on a hike. maybe it might be a beautiful bench in the golden gate national recreation area. it might be in your room or whatever. just to relax and be, here i am lord. i've come to listen to you. and one thing also it said was that if you are having tea or glass of wine or something with god, the thing is to remember
5:15 am
that god might have some things to say to you or us that might be a little more important than we have to say to god although we're important. just listening. you can pick up the scriptures and read a passage like the lord is my shepherd. there is nothing i shall want n. green -- want -- want. in green pastures and so on. that can be prayer. it's also sometimes just -- if a tragedy has happened or get into the moods of filling glow, it's like lord, here i am. help me. that's the other part of psalm 23. even though i walk through the deepest, darkest valley, i fear no evil for you are there with your rod and staff to give me
5:16 am
courage. what's fun, i had one teach their told me, the staff is to pound on the ground to say to the sheep you're not alone in this darkness and thunderstorms and things. the rod is to hit them on the rear end and say don't run backwards. keep going forwards. always forward. that is part of prayer. to walk in the valley, darkness. knowing there's love, giftedness. then there's the prayer which is very important. >> i love what you're saying first and foremost it's a conversation with another being, god which is a being beyond our comprehension, more dynamic than a human person that we can't control. i think that's the hardest part
5:17 am
about it too. just to let -- to really respect the utterness of god. not that god is distant but god is truly another being. when you sit to pray, to just sit with god and be in that awareness. i remember the first time i tried to do that. it was disarming. i was so use to filling a space with thoughts, my needs, my concerns. just to sit with god and allow god to be god and just sit there it's like the old story about the priest who goes into the back of church that's all empty and sees a gentleman sitting in the back. for days he sees him staring up at tabernacle. finally he interrupts him one day and says what is it you're doing? the old man -- so many catholics know this story. he says i look at him, he looks at me. he's sitting with god in the
5:18 am
presence of god. i think that is such a hard first step of prayer to get to that place. maybe first part is that conversation that you were talking about. i think that resonates so much with young adults. to imagine sitting down having a beer with god. it is like that. it is getting close to that friend. more than a friend, it's god. >> also what happens and the challenges if we let god love us and speak to us in that conversation, then hopefully that empowers us to go out and see the grandure. i might have the wrong one here. it says the glory of god is human being fully alive. so if you like to play soccer or
5:19 am
tennis or going to a beautiful spot and just -- when you see i don't semity from inspiration pointe and say wow. let that come into you. that can also bring you when you see a human beings being injured, treated like slaves or whatever. then that can say that's wrong. i touched the grandeur of god. >> we can respond in the most appropriate way when we have that inferiority. that's what we'll talk about when we come back, how this relationship of love with god moves us to share mercy with one another. join pus after we come back -- join us after we come back after this short break. for

5:21 am
5:22 am
. welcome back to "mosaic ." with me today is bishop william justice. we're continuing our look at the year of mercy. we're talking about how important it is, whatever works of mercy we engage of, to have that interior spirit of prayer and bring that prayer into it. i often think about how when jesus -- when st. paul says use as metaphor the body of christ that we are all different members. i think how people will hear different needs around the world and will want to respond in different ways. want to go right away. some try to pray for people here from where they are. i think how you respond is actually -- if it's motivated by that prayer, you cannot go wrong. it's through prayer we disearn how god is calling us to love
5:23 am
our -- discern how god is calling us to love our neighbors. we've talked about how this year of mercy declared year of mercy by pope francis. we're called to be missionaries of mercy. >> yes. >> i'm wondering, how do you understand god's invitation to us to live that mission of mercy to the world and understanding that first we've got to have it rooted in prayer. when people look to then put that into action, how do you understand that and that call from pope francis? >> well, in the prayer for the year of mercy that the pope approved and wrote, he says lord jesus christ, you taught us to be merciful like the heavenly father and told us that whoever sees you sees him. jesus shows us your face and we will be saved.
5:24 am
so that's what i see is that in prayer filled with the holy spirit, we are able to see the face of jesus through the scriptures. and see it more deeply. his call of service to call to recognize dignity of each human being. the call we do -- we are our brother's keeper in the best sense of that. someone is our brothers keeping us. in that, then that pushes us out to be of service to put into action the mercy whether it's -- there's a young couple i know who have just had their first child. you know, they're still goo goo goo, but you can see without sleep that there's a little
5:25 am
wearing. yet i was talking to the father the other day. he said oh but it's all worth it. she's so cute. that's a simple way of putting i don't mind doing this. even though i'll be glad when this part is over. it says we can't just pray with no reaction going out seeing the people of jesus. >> it's difficult but you know it's all worth it. it's worth whatever you're sacrificing. then there are people that it's really hard to see that and even more so -- at least for me during this year of mercy. that's been a challenge i've been wrestling within myself and my heart. the people that are most
5:26 am
difficult sometimes to see the face of christ in. for me personally because of whatever i have going on in my own heart. it's hard for me to see the dignity. i've yet called to love them and share that same mercy with them. i think in this climate of where we're coming up on election which is always really heated and can be so difficult but yet i feel the conversation is changing too. you hear christians talking about how do we love one another better in this process? >> a good example is one of the first -- well, i guess the first two months of the pope's vacancy, he flies to island where so many people were fleeing from africa in the middle east to get onto italian
5:27 am
territory so they might have hope of a new life. he goes and speaks to them. he hugs them. he put into action that mercy. then also with the washing of the feet. that was -- >> the prisoners. yeah. >> it didn't matter -- you know, that they were from different faiths or some women some men. just that hole sense of care -- whole sense of caring and then bringing back the last island he went to near turkey. he brought back a family, two families or is it three? it didn't matter they were muslim. the basic reason was they had all their papers. they could go. now they're being cared for. there's a future.
5:28 am
putting into action mercy. i think one of the things that the man -- >> thank you so much. there's so many wonderful examples from pope francis. definitely thank you for sharing this time with us and helping us learn how to develop an interior life to help us see god in one another. thank you all for joining us. we'll pray for you during this year of mercy. when consultant josh atkins books at laquinta.com. he gets a ready for you alert the second his room is ready. so he knows exactly when he can settle in and think big. and when josh thinks big you know what he gives? i'll give you everything i've got and then some... he gives a hundred and ten percent! i'm confident this 10% can boost your market share. look at that pie chart! boom!
