michelle griego. pg&e could face a $3 million fine on charges from the san bruno blast but some community leaders are not satisfied with the potential punishment. kpix 5's sandra osborne live in san bruno this afternoon with more. sandra. >> reporter: yeah. a bit of a mixed reaction out here. a news conference just wrapped up here at city hall leaders saying they are pleased that pg&e has the guilty verdict. even the city manager saying justice has been served. still, some question the maximum penalty saying that pg&e may not be facing enough when it comes to those penalties. you know that, explosion which happened back in 2010 killed 8 people and destroyed 38 homes. a federal jury found california's largest utility company guilty of misleading investigators about how it was identifying high risk pipelines. although prosecutors got the conviction, a decision to lower the maximum fine from $562 million to $3 million took them by surprise. still, today at that news

conference officials say it was never about the money. >> the counts that the jury has found pg&e guilty on provide a black mark, if you will, as the mayor said, on the corporate seal of pg&e. >> reporter: the city manager saying that it wasn't about whether it was $3 million or $562 million. she was just glad to see the guilty verdict. today the city is asking pg&e not to appeal and to, instead, accept the verdict. san mateo county district attorney steve wagstaffe says the jury is making a strong statement with their verdict labeling the company as felons. and the neighborhood even though it's been nearly six years, they are still dealing with the aftermath. they are working to rebuild. in fact, right now, there is a park in the works for that neighborhood and also a memorial. live in san bruno, sandra osborne, kpix 5. new at noon, on day 6 of a strike we're just now learning santa clara county court workers have agreed to mediation. earlier in the week they

marched and chanted and held up signs. they are demanding higher pay. the strike shut down most operations at all 11 courthouses. only hearings deemed essential are going forward. also new at noon, chopper 5 was over a small plane crash in east san jose that happened about an hour and a half ago at reid-hillview airport. officials say the plane rolled off the runway as it tried to take off then crashed through a fence and ended up blocking part of westbound tully road between capitol expressway and eastridge way. the pilot and passenger were not hurt. an early-morning break-in on the apple campus in cupertino. a trio of burglars led deputies on a chase through san jose and only one of them was caught. kpix 5's maria medina on the search for the other two suspects. >> reporter: this is where that car chase ended when the suspect's car broke down. two of those suspects ran into the neighborhood behind me, one of them ran into a starbucks. >> he ran in and tried to go

hide. >> reporter: but stacey says because the man didn't have the code to get into the bathroom, he had nowhere to run. what happened next unfolded right in front of her, her coworkers' and their customers. >> not even two minutes after, it happened -- cops tackled him to the ground with guns. we were just so shocked. you don't expect that at 5 a.m. >> reporter: santa clara county sheriff's investigators say the man broke into this apple building with two others and were able to drive off with stolen laptops. but an alert security guard got a good description of the trio's car. >> deputies located that vehicle on highway 85. >> reporter: that's when the car chase was on and when their car broke down here, the suspects ran off. one of them in the starbucks off camden and ross, the other two -- >> i was nervous, really nervous. >> reporter: -- in this neighborhood where deputies searched for hours. >> they came from house to house with the dogs and went from this block to that block.

>> it was scary, let me tell ya. >> reporter: but as deputies began to leave one by one without the suspect, it left them wondering where could those suspects have gone? >> i got to go to work. i have a big question mark. is he still here somewhere? you know? kind of spooky. >> reporter: at this hour, investigators say those suspects are still on the loose. in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. a man faces charges of evading police and driving under the influence after a low speed pursuit that spanned two bay area counties. it started this morning in menlo park when a driver wouldn't pull over for local police. the highway patrol then got involved when the suspect's car crossed the bay. the pursuit ended around 5 a.m. in oakland when the car ran over a spike strip near the caldecott tunnel. investigators say that the suspect still wouldn't leave the wrecked car even after it caught fire. a k-9 officer eventually coaxed him out. the suspect has been identified as 28-year-old abdul zahid of

berkeley. a man in arkansas is in custody accused of shooting two law enforcement officers. it happened in a wooded area early this morning in sebastien county about 115 miles west of little rock. the officers were shot while responding to an unspecified call for service. the suspect was arrested several hours after the shooting. the county sheriff says a police officer suffered superficial wounds but would not elaborate on the condition of the sheriff's deputy who was also shot. the department of justice has just released the findings of its year long investigation into the baltimore police department. federal officials say that baltimore officers routinely discriminated against blacks and repeatedly used excessive force. cbs reporter adam may has the details. >> reporter: justice department officials gathered at baltimore city hall to release their scathing report into the baltimore police department. the investigation finds the department discriminates against blacks, uses

unreasonable force, and fails to hold officers accountable for misconduct. >> these violations have deeply eroded the mutual trust between bpd and the community it serves. >> reporter: the report also found officers make large numbers of unlawful stops mostly in poor black neighborhoods. and they retaliate with force against citizens who talk back. the baltimore police department has already started making changes before the report was released. in the last year, the department revised its use of force policy and added more cameras. >> those who choose to wear this uniform and choose to blatantly disregard someone's rights absolutely should be uncomfortable because we are not going to tolerate it. >> reporter: the federal investigation follows the 2015 death of freddie gray who had a fatal spine injury while in police custody. >> the report assessment and follow-up will help us to heal the relationship between the police and our community. >> reporter: the justice

department will now work with baltimore police on a plan to reform the department. adam may for cbs news, baltimore. >> the department of justice had launched similar investigations into police departments in chicago and ferguson, missouri. a police demonstration goes terribly wrong in florida. 73-year-old woman was shot and killed by a police officer and that happened during a demonstration about police procedures. it happened last night in punta gorda about 75 miles south of tampa. mary knowlton was one of 35 people taking part in the city's eight-week citizen police academy. she was shot several times when a real gun was mistakenly used in a fake situation. >> these participants were randomly selected to be put through a shoot, don't shoot snare i don't. during the first scenario, in a horrible accident, participant mary knowlton was mistakenly struck with a live round. >> the officer who shot her is

now on paid administrative as the florida department of law enforcement investigates. there's a memorial service tonight in san mateo for a young athlete who was killed while playing "pokemon go." family and friends will remember 20-year-old calvin riley during a service at st. gregory's church. riley was a college baseball player and high school graduate. he was looking at his phone saturday night in aquatic park when a stranger approached him and then shot and killed him. u.s. park police is leading the investigation. at a state capital hearing today mothers of the six students who died when a berkeley apartment balcony collapsed urged a key assembly committee to pass new regulations. that bill would bring stricter oversight to the construction industry. one mother says her daughter did all the right things that fateful night in june 2015 including texting her when she got to the party but nobody could have anticipated what happened next. >> for me as a mother, i really

believe we failed these kids. i would never in a million years think of saying, ashley, don't walk out on the balcony in the united states of america. >> state senator jerry hill and loni hancock authored the bill. it has to clear the committee by friday to move forward. right now, work is under way to remove the last big truss from the old eastern span of the bay bridge. here's the view from chopper 5 just a short time ago. crews will cut the truss from its support and lower it to barges. this one will have to be cut into three segments before being hauled away. this should continue for a few days. caltrans is live streaming it on youtube so that curious people will not need to rubberneck while crossing the bridge today. about an hour from now in sacramento, a state senate committee is going to hold a special hearing on the devastating crab season. the season was delayed for months because crabs off the california coast had high levels of a toxin caused by large and prolonged algae blooms. as a result, crab sales were down sharply and the crab

left. >> reporter: this trainer knows it costs money attorney a living. >> you have to spend money to make money, right? so i'm driving -- i obviously have to eat well, keep up, do my training, pay for my gym stuff for myself, clothes. >> reporter: add all that to the price of commuting and the career builder survey found the average worker spends $276 a month to go to work. that's $3,300 a year. >> most people think about what they get paid. they need to think more broadly about what it costs them actually to earn that paycheck. the cost of getting to works the cost of business- appropriate clothes. the cost of daycare, pet care. it all adds up. >> reporter: nearly half of those surveyed spent at least $250 a year on clothes for work and half of the employees who buy lunch spend $25 or more a week. more than 30% of people who need daycare spend at least $500 a month. even coffee adds up. about one out of four workers who buys coffee spends up to $25 a week.
