the shocking resignation that has palo alto talking. >> reporter: the letter written by kate downing starts off dear city council members and palo alto residents. we rent our current home with another couple for $6,200 a month. if we wanted to buy the same home, our monthly payment would be $12,177 a month. kate, a planning and transportation commissioner, says the high cost of living in palo alto is forcing her to resign and move to santa cruz. >> i experienced that. it's tough living in palo alto for a long time. we rent and it's difficult. >> reporter: amy brown considers giving up her small business and her rental home to move somewhere more affordable. >> we have a reasonable landlord. so we're not in as bad a position as most people. >> reporter: what's reasonable? >> $4,000. >> reporter: that's reasonable? >> no. it's reasonable in palo alto right now. >> reporter: kate, whose volunteer position as a commissioner made recommendations to the city council about city growth, she

the organization she cofounded called, palo alto forward. developing news. a toddler is seriously hurt after falling from the third floor of an apartment building in foster city. it happened around 8 a.m. this morning at a unit at the waters edge complex on hills day boulevard. the 1 1/2-year-old boy was transported by helicopter to stanford hospital. police think he was leaning on a window screen when fell. new details in a murder investigation at a san francisco shopping mall. the body was found in a stairwell at the westfield center on market street yesterday. officials have ruled that death a homicide and now the medical examiner's office has identified the victim as 28- year-old frank dellisia of san francisco. police are not commenting on how he died or how how long his body may have been there. a 5-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet last night in san francisco's bayview. police say gunfire erupted near whitney young circle and hudson avenue at 5:15 p.m. a little girl was shot in the hand and rushed to the

hospital. she will be okay. police are looking for three suspects. new information about the skydiving accident over the week. the instructor wasn't knows certified. two people died when their shared parachute failed to open. the skydiving company says quan was a veteran skydiver with 700 jumps. but we now know although he was a trusted instructor, he never received certification from the u.s. parachute association. a spokesman says anybody not listed with that group may not meet safety standards. berkeley police are urging "pokemon go" players to be more aware of their surroundings. the warning is sparked by three recent robberies in the city including two near the cal campus. one victim says a man jumped out of a waiting car, punching him, and stealing his phone and wallet. another victim says that she was playing when she noticed she was being followed and soon after, two men knocked her to

this massive apartment explosion just outside of washington, d.c. crews raced to pull neighbors from the flames overnight. adam may on the blast that rocked the community. >> reporter: the massive explosion and fire lit up the night sky in silver spring. the blast so powerful, firefighters a mile away could feel it. >> i was sleeping and i heard a boom and mom said wake up, there's a fire. the whole apartment shook. >> reporter: the explosion happened shortly before midnight causing parts of the buildings to collapse and sending debris across the street. >> the people trapped on second and third floor. >> reporter: emergency crews used ladders to pull residents out of windows on the upper floors. neighbors rescued people before firefighters arrived. rescue dogs searched for several missing victims. official confirmed two people are dead, found inside the rubble and others are still unaccounted for. dozens more were taken to area

vote on the city's minimum wage. tonight the berkeley city council will hold a special meeting to vote on the city's minimum wage. instead of taking the issue to voters this november, the council plans to find a compromise between two competing proposals. right now the minimum wage is $11 an hour. but community members want it to $15 by next year. the city council meets at 6 p.m. for that vote. new at noon, the lines have been out the door at a popular bakery in san francisco and kpix 5's sandra osborne shows us the tasty treats that earned it the title bakery of the year by bon appetit magazine. >> reporter: it's called rc2 with hungry customers waiting patiently in line and smell the

park without thigh hike. >> reporter: tourists -- without the hike. >> reporter: tourists and local residents now have a new way to see yosemite. >> you can still see the features of the cliffs and the waterfalls and so forth. but you can see everything beyond them as well. >> reporter: from high in the sky, we see half dome towering over the meadows below and visitors driving through the park. >> this is el capitan. we are looking at tuolumne meadows. >> reporter: the owner and the airport manager say he wanted to show people what he has been seeing for years. >> i first flew over, i thought, man,should be seeing this. >> reporter: he was approved by the faa to give scenic tours. >> folks who can't hike or aren't able to really see the perspective like a bird would see can still do that today. >> reporter: the yosemite flyover operates year round depending on weather of course. you see it like you have never

seen before. you see everything from looking down instead of up. tonight star gazers will see the perseid meteor shower. the best time to see it is after midnight. nasa expects between 160 to 200 meteors to go through the atmosphere through dawn tomorrow morning. normally the showers are only between about 80 to 100 so we're looking at double. city dwellers will have to go where the skies are the darkest. >> and the clearest. fog, haze, close to the coast not good. yes miss g? >> yes. not good. just lie an your back and look up -- just lie on your back and look up. fog will be hanging tight to the coast and moving into the bay. go inland. it will be worth the show and usually we have a couple trailing off into your friday and saturday morning. this is the golden gate bridge. you have the towers about 747 feet above the bay waters and we can't see the top of it which lead me to believe that ceiling has lowered to about 700 feet. but sfo now has planes on time. they were delayed earlier. 74 now in san jose. it's 75 degrees in santa rosa. it is another "spare the air" day today and tomorrow with smoke particles entrained in our wind flow here in the bay area. satellite-radar, slow to clear at the beaches today. pacifica with some sun but until this low gets out of here it's enhancing our marine layer. once it ejects to the east that right there an area is high pressure will come in, in time for the weekend. wait until you see which day

of the day. >> reporter: today is with kasaba melon, they're called mixed melon in the market. there's plenty of them but they are not always the most popular melons maybe because they look like a gourd with rough edges. let me show you. you see this? let me tell you. they are wonderful. when you cut these open, the sugar is out of this world. and even though the look stays around for a while, they don't. the shelf life because of the sugar content is so high is not as long as other mixed melons. when you buy them, make sure the color is nice all the way around, heavy so it has a small cavity. and a wonderful aroma. when you bring them home, store them on the counter two or three days four days at the most. or you put them in the refrigerator. or leave them on the counter. put the unused portion in the refrigerator. sometimes that can hurt the flavor to store it in the refrigerator. when you cut them open on the
