from moving closer to a historical landmar now at 5:00, firefighters are racing to stop a raging wildfire from moving closer to a historical landmark. strong winds have been whipping flames closer to hearst castle. good evening. i'm juliette goodrich. >> and i'm brian hackney. billowing gray smoke has filled the sky near san timian tonight. the chimney fire is about two miles away from hearst castle. the wildfire burning more than 24,000 acres and destroying about 50 structures. so far hundreds more are threatened. the fire just 35% contained. kpix 5's maria medina shows us how firefighters are working to protect hearst castle from the highly volatile fire. >> reporter: firefighters battling the chimney fire in the air, thousands on the ground. and now they fear hearst castle

could be in its destructive path. the national historic landmark originally built for newspaper publisher william randolph hearst, a mansion often visited by politicians and the hollywood elite nearly a century ago. now open to the public for tours, until now. >> the wind changes about every 12 hours. thankfully there are low numbers of houses out there that need to be protected but percent castle is in the area. >> reporter: cal fire battalion chief says the fire is unpredictable as it creeps closer to hearst castle. >> 4 miles doesn't sound too far. >> it's not too far. the fire would have to make a severe left turn and go to the west to affect hearst property but the hearst property is very large. there are thousands of acres. >> are you treating it differently because it's a historical landmark? >> it is a historical landmark. we have a plan already created for that. normally when the town is threatened, there's usually a

pre-attack plan established. this is no evidence de. >> -- this is no different. >> reporter: they've dug a 16-foot wide contingency line created to stop the flames there, far enough away from the castle. but the challenge, the wind, that could send embers flying in to the historical hearst estate. >> the fuels are so dry, they're putting off record setting energy releases right now which means the fire is burning hotter than it every has. >> but they are getting more and more help every single day. as firefighters gain the upper hand in other nearby wildfires, they're being pulled off to help with the chimney fire. >> firefighters are making major progress in lake county. the clayton fire is almost fully contained. it's charred 3900 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes. investigators say the cause was arson. their suspect, damon pacik was arrested monday. he faces more than a dozen

charges for illegally starting fires. major evacuations in effect as the cedar fire rages on. it's scorched nearly 18,000 acres and is only 5% contained. parts of the sequoia national forest are now closed. no word yet on the cause. and a long line of cars in san bernardino county, all evacuation orders have been lifted for residents affected by the blue cut fire. when the wildfire was at its peak, 82,000 people were forced to evacuate. many of them were relieved to return to their homes today. >> this is the first time it's been significantly extended evacuation so it's really nice to come home and know that everything is standing and that all of our friends' homes, that they're safe and their homes are all still standing. >> thank you, firefighters. absolutely. >> blue cut fire has burned more than 37,000 acres and is now 83% contained. back here in the bay area,

hit-and-run crash triggered a gas leak and evacuations this afternoon in san jose. crash happened around 1:00 on story road. a few businesses were evacuated, also about 10 homes on amador drive. a fire captain says a car hit a gas feeder line on the side of the building then left the scene. utility workers were called in to cap the gas line. firefighters stayed on the scene for a few hours to make sure nothing caught fire or exploded. >> the biggest danger is we've got natural gas free flowing out of the pipe. somewhere else we could possibly have ignition sources. there's always a danger of that. >> 3:30, pg&e was able to stop the flow of gas but one block of story road is blocked between leeward drive and adrian way. a high speed car chase ended in a crash overnight sending five people to the hospital. it happened after 1:00 this morning at the 2,000 block of mclaughlin avenue in san jose.

we're told the people taken to the hospital are all juveniles and the car they were in was stolen. the person chasing them, the owner of the car. >> honestly all i know is my car got stolen. that's all i know. we started following the guy and once he noticed we were following him, he lost control, swerving, driving like a maniac. >> based on the speed and the mechanism after the accident, they all became trauma victims based on our criteria so all five of them were transferred to local hospitals. >> no word on their conditions and san jose police are investigating the crash. a baby born prematurely after his mother was killed in a car crash is slowly improving. baby christopher can be seen wiggling his fingers in this video. he remains in serious condition at valley medical center in san jose. his mother, 18-year-old dulce capatillo was pregnant when the car crashed. doctors were able to save her son but they couldn't save her. friends and family have set up a

gofundme page to help with funeral expenses. the crabbing industry is taking another hit. a new state warning finds high levels of demoic acid in rock, crab, and other shellfish. >> reporter: barry day makes his living off the sea at salmon, tuna, and crab. after the california department of public health issued a warning to avoid eating rock crabs from half moon bay, salmon is all he's selling today. according to the california department of public health, rock crab caught and tested here in half moon bay so demoic acid levels 10 times more than the action level, which is 30 parts per million. the warning also includes shellfish, oysters, mussels, clams. barry says the restrictions are too tight. >> they used to be 50 parts per million. why is it 30 parts per million

now? more realistic research on it has to be done because other countries aren't following the standard. >> reporter: the state's action levels have cut down business dramatically especially during the last dungeness crab season when high demoic acid levels shut down most of the dungeness crab fishing. >> insurances and stuff like this, your finances are set up. this year, bang. stop. >> reporter: that shutdown caused $48 million in losses for the crab industry. barry said some of his fellow fishermen went out of business and he said the state should work harder to find a fix. >> look for the solution. at the end of the day we don't want people getting sick. >> people we spoke with said they won't take any chances with the new warning. >> they've been doing the test in the water. the officials tell us what we can and can't eat. i'd listen to them. >> we wait till it's all clear. we have him to worry about and

family. it's not worth the effects of what it can do to your body. >> reporter: so far no illnesses have been reported. in half moon bay, cate cauguiran, kpix 5. >> symptoms from demoic acid poisoning can hit people within 30 minutes of eating toxic seafood and the most severe cases can be fatal. a man has turned himself in. this car was traveling south on sonoma boulevard when a 47-year-old richmond man was hit and subsequently killed. the collision happened earlier this month. the car was abandoned in south vallejo. while one of the suspects have come forward, police are looking for 26-year-old taylor gowan. anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact vallejo police. it's been a day of mourning after a suicide bomber killed 50 people at a wedding party in turkey. weijia jiang has the latest from washington, d.c. >> reporter: the blast was so powerful it shattered glass and

took out chunks of concrete from buildings near a town of the turkish syrian border. the suicide bomber was between 12 and 14 years old. some of the badly injured are around the same age. this little girl was hit in the face with shrapnel. she was one of the guests who gathered for a wedding celebration saturday night. the bride and groom's injuries are not life-threatening but the groom's sister and uncle are among the dead. a day of joy now marred in tragedy. turkey's president blames isis for the terror attack. he walked the halls of the hospital, trying to comfort the victims sunday. turkey is still trying to rebound from the failed coup attempt last month. experts believe the attack was in retaliation for kurdish advances on isis forces in syria. last june several suicide bombers set off explosions at istanbul's ataturk airport. at least 44 people were killed. officials say the latest attack

battleground states. wendy gillette tells us republican officials now say he's improving as a candidate. >> on november 8th, you've got to get out and vote, right? >> reporter: top republican officials say donald trump is back on track after a series of controversies. >> i think he's shown maturity. i think he's growing in his role. he's a person who's never run for public office. >> reporter: hillary clinton is now leading trump nationally by at least 5 points. a cbs news battleground tracker poll shows clinton has extended her lead in ohio to 6 points, improving two points since july. in iowa the candidates are even at 40% a piece. the only state with recent polling that doesn't show clinton leading. trump's new campaign manager kelly ann conway says voters are seeing a more focused candidate. >> this is the best week i think so far in the trump campaign. mostly because he's able to be himself, the authentic donald trump. but also the pivot he's made is

on substance. >> reporter: clinton's team disagrees with the claims. >> we're not seeing a pivot. >> reporter: trump announced his first ad buy of the campaign. in terms of raising money, clinton is far ahead, raking in a total of $326 million since 2015, more than twice of what trump has brought in. clinton spent the weekend fundraising in massachusetts and will hold more finance events monday in california. wendy gillette for cbs news, new york. >> vice presidential candidate tim kaine is in the bay area raising money for the clinton campaign. earlier today he made stops at two homes in san francisco and in portola valley. right now he's in a third fundraiser in atherton. meanwhile, hillary clinton will be back in the bay area later this week. she's attending a fundraiser hosted by apple ceo tim cook and clinton's campaign is halfway to its goal of raising $1 billion for the 2016 race. donald trump will head to napa valley next monday to hold

the ongoing new information on prince's death. we now know pills at his estate contained fentanyl. in the ongoing investigation, his paisley park estate reveals pills found in aspirin and vitamin bottles contained the highly addicted opioid. prince died at his home in april. autopsy results show he overdosed on fentanyl. authorities say he had no prescription for any controlled substances in the state of minnesota. they're investigating how he got the drug. health officials now say the zika virus could stay in the u.s. for another year or two. they're warning that states along the gulf coast are most vulnerable to spread the disease. earlier today workers were spraying areas along miami beach to combat zika carrying mosquitos. mosquito-borne zika cases have been found in two neighborhoods of miami county, and they are the first areas on the u.s. mainland where health officials discovered mosquitos were

transmitting zika. it's thunderstorm season out in the sierra and also over the desert southwest as monsoonal moisture is beginning to fire up over the mojave desert and working its way in to the southern, central, and northern sierra. you can see that on the time lapse here, sun comes up, and those thunderstorms blossom from yosemite down to the sierra and range east of bishop. a few sierra thunderstorms out there. for us we've got clouds, no rain. as we look at sfo and the numbers right now, plenty warm in concord. 79 degrees. san francisco at 61. san jose, 74. in santa rosa, 70 degrees. here's how it looks now for the afternoon high forecast for tomorrow. low 80s inland. that's about as warm as we're going to get. we'll go in brentwood, low 90s. around the bay, mid to low 70s. at the shoreline, on the chilly side. futurecast shows plenty of low clouds that have packed in along the shoreline getting pulled through the gate and along the peninsula so tomorrow morning we wake up to mostly overcast skies

but not for long. the low clouds pull back to the shore lickety split so by midday it will be a mostly sunny day. low pressure is going to float in over the pacific northwest. that will bring numbers down a little bit for monday. but by midweek we'll be warming again to 90 degrees around livermore and pleasanton, dublin and san ramon. if you're going to catch the oakland as playing the indians tomorrow, partly sunny skies. temperature of 58 degrees at game time. overnight lows, mid 50s for the most part. sun up tomorrow morning, 6:32 a.m. those thunderstorms in the forecast for tahoe and yosemite. for fresno, 96 degrees. sacramento, 85. so it has cooled down in the central valley although 97 doesn't sound terribly cool. for the bay area, we're below average. in san francisco tomorrow, just 5 degrees below average at 63. concord is well off the average mark of 87. san jose tomorrow, 77.

and oakland, 67 degrees. not bad though down in the south bay. numbers are simply pleasant. mid 70s for the most part. a little bit warmer in campbell and morgan hill. in the east bay tomorrow, numbers near the low 80s except out of brentwood, 93 degrees. north bay, nice. temperatures in the low to mid 70s with sun after the usual night and early morning low clouds. then as we get up toward ukiah and clear lake and lakeport, numbers will be in the low 90-degree range. extended forecast, we'll be looking for numbers to be in the 80s until we warm them up to near 90 by wednesday. then we'll cool them down. either way it's not going to be terribly dramatic. it will just be summertime in the bay area and a little bit cool. as for really cool, here's mr. glenn. >> let me applaud you giving the oakland as some love. got a lot to get to in wrapping up a sunday afternoon. guess who's already a day ahead? the cal football team.
