the damage from the air. the epicenter was near norcia in the up brea region at northeast of rome. seth doane reports. >> reporter: rescue crews carried a young girl to safety after she was pulled from the rubble in amatrice. the earthquake flattened homes and trapped people. it struck around 3:30 p.m. one town clock stopped marking the time. residents woke to find their communities leveled in some case walls cracked open or destroyed. this woman says a wall fell next to her. this is a remote mountainous region. this is an area where italians in particular will come on vacation. one of the issues is getting the equipment in to sift through some of the rubble. and, of course, the ambulances in to try to get those who were

wounded out. in the village eight miles from amatrice, frustrated survivors waited for rescue crews to dig out loves ones in the rubble. this man says no one has gone there yet. they sealed off the area and kicked us out. [ non-english language ] >> reporter: at the vatican, pope francis skipped his traditional catechism lesson and prayed for the victims of the earthquake instead. seth doane, cbs news, amatrice, italy. hillary clinton will keep a mostly low profile as she raises money in the bay area. the first of three private fundraisers gets under way in an hour. tech ceo amy rau will host an event in redwood city. then at 4:15 clinton is expected at a fundraiser in los altos and two hours later at an event hosted by tim cook in woodside. last night she surprised supporters in piedmont by stepping out to shake hands while attending another private fundraiser. tickets to the various events

violence incident with the 37- year-old councilman. the santa clara county district attorney's office is handling the case. jeffrey was first elected to the council in 2010. we expect to learn more later today about a san jose police investigation dubbed operation gang of thrones. among the arrests is a veteran member of the department. kpix 5's maria medina reports. >> reporter: that police officer could have his badge and gun stripped away. the police chief plans to hold a press conference about that arrest in just a few hours. now, according to the "mercury news," that 9.5-year veteran is accused of leaking sensitive information to vietnamese street gangs. now his identity and exactly what information he leaked are unknown but what we doe know is his arrest was part of a month long investigation into those gang members. several of them arrested earlier this week and the list of crimes is pretty long including extortion, public corruption, drugs and gambling. and police say many of those crimes would happen at vietnamese cafes here in san

jose and that the suspects would extort those owners of those cafes. according to the "mercury news," that officer who was arrested on tuesday is now on leave. again, those details of what information he was leaking allegedly to gang members unknown but we hope to learn those details later today when the police chief holds a press conference at 3 p.m. here at police headquarters. at sjpd, maria medina, kpix 5. federal investigators helped with the case including raiding homes, businesses and vietnamese cafes. the san jose city council will review a plan later today dealing with police staffing shortages. currently the department only has 413 patrol officers and needs a minimum of 500. one of the options under consideration is declaring a state of emergency to address the shortage. daly city police are looking for the person who shot and injured a man overnight. the victim, in his early 20s, was shot around 12:30 on vendome avenue.

he is in stable condition. police have not released information on the shooter. new at noon, a social networking site aimed at bringing neighbors closer together getting backlash from people who say it's a magnet for racial profiling. kpix 5's anne makovec is live with the new changes to reduce alleged discrimination. anne. >> reporter: basically, if you see somebody you think is suspicious and you want to post a warning for your neighbors on nextdoor.com, you better have more specifics than just race. nextdoor is a private social network for individual neighborhoods where people can post about block parties or babe sitters or warning about potential crimes but community leaders in oakland say the site was fostering racial profiling. some users posting vague descriptions of people they viewed as suspicious focusing on race. >> if we have a chance to be part of the solution we have a moral obligation do that. >> reporter: so now posters will be required to answer more

an attack at the american n's developing news at least one student is dead after armed militants launched an attack at the american university in afghanistan's capital city of kabul. kenneth craig has the latest. >> reporter: the wounded were rushed away by ambulance after a militant attack on the american university of afghanistan. witnesses say they heard a loud explosion and automatic gunfire on the campus. witnesses say students barricaded themselves in a classroom using chairs and desks to block the door. >> the security forces they have been already deployed around the university. so we do not know whether the militants are killed or not. >> reporter: it happened on the campus in the western outskirts of kabul around 7:30 local time from inside the "associated press"'s pulitzer prize winning photographer sent these now deleted tweets, help, we are

introduced legislation to repeal sales taxes on menstrual products. the cost of the epipen for people with severe allergies has jumped nearly 500% since 2009. now lawmakers want some answers. meanwhile, martin shkreli the former pharmaceutical ceo known for increasing prices of a drug, is defending it. >> i think important medicine should be expensive because they are valuable. >> reporter: the former pharmaceutical chief martin shkreli gained notoriety last year by ratcheting up the cost of a malaria and hiv medication by 5,000%. he defends the epipen's increase for from about $100 for a two pack in 2009 to more than $600 this year. >> everyone can understand in a free market the dollars rule. however, these are life-saving drugs. people don't have a choice whether they can buy them or not. >> yeah. well, that's up to insurance to pay for them. like i said, it's $300 a pen.
