highway. and now: a chp officer opens fire on a knife wielding man along the side of a busy bay area highway, and now the suspect is clinging to life. good evening. i'm brian hackney. >> and i'm juliette goodrich. the shooting happened on highway 101 in belmont just south of the ralston avenue exit. the incident shut down all northbound lanes for hours. kpix 5's jessica flores is near the scene where the risky confrontation happened. >> the freeway is now open. it's been open since about 8 a.m. but there's a lot of questions that remain. investigators have not released the name of that suspect and we just don't know how he ended up on the freeway in the first place. >> reporter: a chaotic scene unfolding on highway 101 around

2:30 a.m. drivers see a man walking and running across the lanes. investigators say when chp officers confronted the man, he came at them with a knife. that's when one of the chp officers shot the unidentified suspect on the northbound lanes. >> ultimately the suspect produced a knife, held it over his head, and lunged toward one of our officers. >> reporter: paramedics rushed the suspect in critical condition to stanford medical center. no officer was injured. now the belmont police department is taking the lead in the investigation. trying to piece together why the man was on the freeway and what led to the shooting. according to chp, the man was hopping over the concrete barrier walking on the southbound and northbound lanes and they don't know how he got on the freeway. chp shut down 101 freeway northbound at ralston in the early morning but they didn't find an abandoned car and investigators are trying to determine if the man walked on

to the freeway. when chp did reach the man on highway 101, they say their officers tried other methods before one of the officers fired his gun. >> as they were trying to detain him, was resistive, they deployed a taser to no avail. >> reporter: at least four officers were there when the man allegedly lunged toward them with a knife. belmont police department is now working on collecting witness statements. >> and the last word from investigators was that that suspect is still in critical condition. belmont police is leading the investigation and chp is doing their own internal investigation. reporting live from belmont, jessica flores, kpix 5. 9ers fans outraged with colin kaepernick after he sat out the national anthem. people have been posting videos of themselves burning their kaepernick jerseys and other merchandise. the quarterback said he couldn't honor a country that oppresses black people and people of

color. maria medina was there as he explained why he'll continue to stand up for social injustice. >> this is because i'm seeing things happen to people that don't have a voice, people that don't have a platform to talk and have their voices heard and effect change. >> reporter: kaepernick explained in the locker room after practice today he made his decision based on what he believes are social injustices in our country right now. the example he gave, police brutality, claiming he's been racially profiled by police in the past. >> one of my roommates was moving out of the house in college, and because we were the only black people in that neighborhood, the cops got called and all of us had guns drawn on us. you can become a cop in six months and don't have to have the same amount of training as a cosmetologist. that's insane. someone that's holding a curling iron has more education and more training than people that have a gun and are going out on the street to protect us. >> reporter: the quarterback has actually sat during the

initial anthem at all the preseason games but no one noticed until saturday's game when he did it for the first time in uniform. he says many of his teammates support him. >> everyone has the right to stand up for what they believe in so i respect that first and foremost, whether i agree with what he did or not and the way he did it. >> reporter: kaepernick says he believes what he's doing is right, even if that means his decision has consequences on his career including getting cut from the team. >> i can't look in the mirror and see other people dying on the street that should have the same opportunities that i've had. >> kaepernick was actually asked to speak to his teammates about why he did what he did. he said they had an open conversation about it. some of the players told us they understand his decision. at levi's stadium, maria medina, kpix 5. police have made an arrest in connection with a stabbing spree. the suspect reportedly robbed and stabbed two men with a

screwdriver. the man took off then attacked another man who was riding a bike. police eventually tracked down the suspect. both victims who were stabbed are expected to be okay. a bay area congresswoman who's been leading a push for more gun control at a sit-in today at a peninsula. people of all ages sat at a congregation. signs on easels showed pictures of shooting victims this year and the kinds of assault weapons that are still legal. congresswoman jackie spear says nobody should have to live in fear of being shot at places like schools, movie theaters, dance clubs and churches. >> i want desperately to see them put some gun safety measures in place. we can do this. we're a country that's capable of doing this. we've done it in the past. we had an assault weapon ban in this country for 10 years. >> spear and some of her democratic colleagues in congress are demanding votes on universal background checks for gun purchases and preventing suspected terrorists from buying

guns. for the first time in years, oakland unified is starting the school year without a major shortage of teachers. school officials announcing today they only have four vacant teacher positions that will likely get filled soon. this time last year there were 70 teacher vacancies. the district hired more than 400 teachers leading up to the academic year. they did it by boosting social media outreach, launching an online jobs board, and offering signing bonuses. b.a.r.t. riders will soon have a chance to shop while they're waiting for their trains to arrive. the transit agency has partnered with developer transmart to bring retail stores inside b.a.r.t. stations. prospective businesses include gear deli chocolates and oak landish. the stores could launch as early as december in the oakland and downtown san francisco stations. a festive pride parade today in the silicon valley. dancers in colorful costumes moving through downtown san

jose, cheered on by thousands of spectators and some of the people who turned out along market street were seeing this type of parade for the very first time. >> it's my son's first pride experience. it was a good choice to bring him here to san jose as opposed to san francisco where it may be a little bit more wild. this is a great first experience for him. >> the procession ended at a spot where the festival was going on featuring reggae and latin music on several stages. this year's scene was diversity, inclusion, and success. donald trump tried to clarify his position on illegal immigration today after the presidential nominee altered his stance on the issue earlier in the week. as cbs reporter wendy gillette shows us, a lot more on the way. >> reporter: the campaign manager told john dickerson the republican presidential nominee has not changed his staff on undocumented immigrants. >> first, there's no amnesty.

secondly, he's building the wall. that's been the centerpiece and his vision from the beginning and it's not changed one inch. >> reporter: what has seemingly changed is trump's position on what will happen to an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the u.s. he called for a doportation force to help send them out of the country. but in recent days his campaign team has talked about what they call a more humane approach. though they say trump's views have not shifted. >> you heard him describe there in his usual plain spoken american way was a mechanism, not a policy. you're going to hear more detail in the next two weeks. >> reporter: on the democratic side, the chair of the party defended hillary clinton after trump called her a bigot last week. >> donald trump has not held an event in the black community. he's not gone to a black church as hillary clinton has done. >> reporter: the democratic presidential nominee spent the day fundraising in the hamptons.

shooting dwayne wade's cousn chicago... are now behind bars. today: two brothers suspected of shooting dwayne wade's cousin in chicago are now behind bars. today 22-year-old darren sorels and darwin sorrels were charged with first degree murder, both were career criminals out on parole at the time of the shooting. wade's cousin was just 32 years old when she was shot and killed

by a bullet that was meant for someone else. it happened friday afternoon on the south side of chicago. aldridge was pushing a baby carriage when shots were fired. >> aldridge registered her child at school friday afternoon. she would be the subject of national headlines just hours later. she wasn't aware that her short life would stand as an example of what is a clear failure in the criminal justice system here in chicago. >> police say they've yet to track down the gun used but they do have video of the shooting. in louisiana two people and dozens injured after a bus carrying flood recovery workers slammed in to a fire truck. the crash happened on highway west of new orleans. the fire truck was blocking traffic while police investigated an earlier accident. a bus hit the fire truck and other cars knocking three firefighters in to the water below. a fire chief and a passenger in a car died. state police say the bus driver,

an undocumented immigrant from honduras, and he did not have a driver's license. from the head of the public utilities commission to the guy next door, skyrocketing pg&e bills are a common complaint. julie watts reports on why some are quick to blame their smart meters and how to tell if it's really to blame. >> the problem is these will be energy savers. >> reporter: john gray was already struggling to pay the bills when his pg&e began to skyrocket. >> $900 to $1200 a month. >> reporter: the disabled single father began turning off appliances and cutting power use, but his bills continued to rise, nearly tripling year-to-year. >> i think the meter is malfunctioning. >> reporter: immediately john suspected his smart meter. and he's not alone. even the former head of the public utility commission, michael peavey, suspected his meter was to blame when his power bills more than doubled a few years back. according to e-mails obtained by the l.a. times, pg&e ordered a staffer to, quote, have someone address this asap. >> never had anyone say we'll come out and check your meter.

never. >> reporter: while the customer service may have been different, the results were the same. according to pg&e the smart meters were not to blame. >> i think a lot has been done to make sure the smart meters were working correctly. >> reporter: anna montez says while faulty meters were blamed for billing errors, she says two years of consecutive rate increases totaling 13% are now to blame for a recent spike in billing complaints. she says pg&e can make mistakes. a red flag if your energy usage increases more than 25% year-to-year. in john's case, his usage didn't skyrocket, just his bill. turns out his care and medi-cal baseline discounts had lapsed. pg&e has now restored those discounts and john's faith in his smart meter. pg&e has now forgiven more than $5,000 of his outstanding debt and has agreed to send out an energy auditor to his home.

the utility points out these discounts for low income or disabled folks, they do automatically lapse every two years unless the customer proactively recertifies, meaning filling out paperwork and proof of need. in san francisco, i'm julie watts. a man barely escapes death because of a daring officer. >> blue skies up above, low clouds on the way. forecast is coming up as well.

pulled to safety by a trans officer... just moments before a trai take a look at this new video. a man lying on the tracks gets pulled to safety by a transit officer just moments before a train comes rushing by. it happened in new jersey earlier this week. police say a transit officer climbed down from a terminal platform to save the man. it's not clear why he was on the tracks in the first place. a group of scientists are finally back in the real world after completing a year-long mars simulation in hawaii.

they lived in a dome on monaloa for the past year and could only go outside while wearing space suits. they say they're looking forward to getting in to the ocean and eating fresh produce. the simulation was the second longest of its kind after a mission that lasted 520 days in russia. meanwhile back in this part of earth we've got plenty of sunshine and i'd like to introduce you to madeline, the tropical storm now spinning in the pacific and threatening hawaii by midweek. even though it will be a hurricane tomorrow before being downgraded the path of madeline will take it over the big island, but by then it's going to go to a hurricane category 1, then bumped to a tropical storm. a lot of rain and heavy winds coming in by tuesday, wednesday. bay area, 83 degrees. oakland's got 70. livermore, 82.

san francisco, 65 degrees. very pleasant day today. numbers came up just a notch or two. tomorrow afternoon, sunny and warm inland again. coastline, ditto after the usual low clouds. more mild temps all this week for the bay area with just minor fluctuations in high temperature readings. futurecast shows low clouds come back in to the shoreline overnight tonight. we begin monday morning with fairly extensive low clouds. then those will dissipate and head back to the shoreline later in the day. along the shoreline we get the low clouds at the coast in the mornings. temperatures will remain in the low 80s inland and mild temperatures all this upcoming week. overnight lows tonight, mid to upper 50s will do it for the most part. sun up tomorrow morning, out of bay area partly cloudy skies in the mountains. tahoe, 83 degrees. yosemite, 74. in the central valley, numbers will be mostly in the 90s.

nice and warm inland but along the shoreline, not so much. in the extended forecast which has come up much more suddenly than i thought it was, temperatures will be in the low 80s inland. 83 degrees monday. tuesday, mid 80s as well. around the bay numbers will be in the 70s. and they'll stay that way pretty much all week. temperatures will be in the low 60s along the shoreline with low clouds in the early morning. we're going to have temperatures pretty much remain in the mid 80s inland. at the shoreline the numbers will be in the low 60s. if you know what the last week or two has been like, you're going to have a pretty good idea of what the upcoming week looks like as well. that's weather. for sports, let's get the latest. if the giants want to make the playoffs, they've got to be the beat -- got to beat the weak

giants needed a bounce backe and a series win against the worst team in baseball. coming off his worst start of the year, madison bumgarner and the giants needed a bounceback game and series win. giants hoping to stop the water from coming in to their ship. bumgarner allowed three runs in 7 innings but he had plenty of run support. joe panik starts off a huge game for him. solo shot 1-0. same score, bottom of the 4th. another one in to right field.

two-run home run. makes it 4-1. panik finishes the game 3-4 with four runs batted in. giants made at&t look like coors field today. three batters later, denard span with his ninth long ball of the year, giants led 5-1. after the braves cut the lead to 5-3, the giants explode in the 7th. brandon crawford goes in to triples alley, scoring buster posey from 1st base, and back up to a three-run lead. then two batters later, jarrett parker called up from triple-a before the game. parker had three runs batted in in the game. giants finish the game with 11 extra base hits. four of them triples. they win 13-4 to take 2-3 in the series. vin scully is hoping to call some playoff games before retiring after the season. no score, bottom of the 8th, cubs and dodgers, bases loaded, adrian gonzalez, looks like he grounds out to end the inning. ben zobrist covers 2nd base too

late. everybody is safe. that's the only run of the game right there. and the dodgers win 1-0. the as were in st. louis where they could help the giants out on the wildcard race. top of the 1st, davis, this guy has had a season and a half. would you believe this? his 34th home run, two-run jack. as up 2-0. they beat good baseball teams. 2-1 in the 3rd. stephen vogt, there's his 11th. three-run blast to make it 5-1. he had four runs batted in. cardinals 5-3. alberto rosario scores garcia from 1st. that cut the oakland lead to one run. rosario was thrown out at 3rd to end the inning. next inning, as respond. valencia doubles home marcus siemian. the as won 7-4. they take 2-3 in that series. as starter andrew trigg picked up his first year major league win.

what does all this mean? the dodgers and giants both winning, l.a. keeps their two-game lead in the west, but with the cardinals' loss, the giants lead st. louis by two and a half games for the first wildcard spot. new york looking to become the first u.s. team to win the little league world series since 2011, scoreless against south korea. bottom of the 4th, conner rush drives in the first run of the game with a bloop single. wins 2-1. the first time new york has won the series since the johnson administration. nfl, a jekyll and hyde game last night for the raiders who had fireworks on offense against the titans. the defense, not so much. tennessee marked down the field on their opening drive thanks to a 60-yard pick by the rookie wide-out, sharp. demarco murray finished the drive off with the short touchdown. the titans racked up 336 total yards and won 27-14. jack del rio not too thrilled
