police say: 11-month-old "william brown" breaking news. an amber alert issued for a little boy in san francisco. police say 11-month-old william brown was abducted last night. he was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray pajamas with sharks on them. the suspect is identified as 44- year-old phoebe haynes.

she is believed to be the boy's grandmother. haynes was last seen driving a 2004 white acura tl. the front bumper may be black. call 911 with information. new at noon quarterback colin kaepernick drawing more criticism this time for what he was seen wearing on the field. and it's coming just hours before he is set to start in the 49ers final preseason game. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us with the latest twist in the national anthem controversy and results of an exclusive new poll. anne. >> reporter: just realized after zooming in on some practice video that kaepernick has been making a statement with his socks. here's kaepernick at a team practice on august 12th at levi's stadium. and when we take a closer look at his socks, you can make out the image of a pig in a cop's hat. he has reportedly been wearing these socks for weeks. it appears to be part of a "statement" against police. the same statement he made after causing quite a stir sitting through the national anthem before last friday's

game at levi's stadium. we just got this statement from colin kaepernick about those controversial socks. he says, i wore those socks in the past because the rogue cops that are allowed to hold positions in police departments not only put the community in danger but also have put the cops that have the right intention in danger by creating an environment of tension and mistrust. now, we also just got the results of a new kpix/surveyusa poll this morning. keep in mind, this poll was taken before the pig socks were revealed. first question, do you respect kaepernick's decision to remain seated for the national anthem, 55% no. do you understand at least the reasons why he says he will not stand? 72% say they understand. 27% say no. and when asked if respondents' opinion of colin kaepernick has changed, 16% say it's got up,

53% say it's gone down. 31% say it's unchanged. now, kaepernick will be on the field in san diego tonight. and again, he is expected to continue his "protest" and tonight's game happens to be a celebration honoring 240 military members right before the national anthem. kenny? >> thank you. we'll have live coverage leading up to tonight's 49ers- chargers preseason matchup an early start, remember at 6:59 p.m. ahead of the game right here on kpix 5. final security plans are under way for tomorrow's release of former stanford swimmer brock turner. he will walk out of santa clara county's main jail after serving half of his six-month sentence. kpix 5's maria medina spoke with the woman who is leading a protest tomorrow against the judge in turner's case. >> reporter: the sheriff told us brock turner will likely be released anytime between 5 and 9 a.m. tomorrow. but when he walks out of the front doors of the jail he will walk right into protestors. >> we're calling attention to the short sentence that mr.

turner got. >> reporter: michelle wants her message to be heard loud and clear tomorrow. >> the message is that we believe judge persky should be recalled by the voters of santa clara county. >> reporter: the stanford professor is organizing a protest outside the jail tomorrow and has also led the recall campaign against aaron persky, the judge who sentenced brock turner to six months in jail. >> he has a long-standing pattern of bias in cases of sexual assault, particularly involving collegiate athletes. >> reporter: turner, a former stanford swimmer sexually assaulted a drunk woman outside of a frat party last year. he faced several years behind bars and instead persky game him half a year in jail which many called a slap on the wrist. >> three months is not a sentence for a major felony let alone three felony sex crimes. >> i think the protestors are going to be angry. i think a lot of people are angry over this case. >> reporter: the santa clara county sheriff told kpix 5 turner's case may be high- profile but he won't get special treatment and will walk out of the front doors of the

jail like everyone else. >> he should not be treated any different than anyone else. um, we obviously have to keep people safe. but he is going to walk out the front door. we have treated this case just like we treat every other person being released from custody. >> reporter: but tomorrow a portion of the public won't treat him like every other inmate. they will voice their opinion of his sentence and early release that's even got the sheriff agreeing with them. >> it's too light of a sentence for a rapist and, um, but we're just going to make sure that the public and everybody is safe on the morning that he is released. >> reporter: and after his release, turner will reportedly go back to ohio, where he is from, and complete his probation. in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. the san francisco police department is moving forward getting more officers trained and equipped with body cameras. the department says that the cameras are proving to be effective law enforcement tools and a way for the department to be more transparent to the public. earlier today, several officers talked today about their experiences during the test run. >> you know, my first week

>> reporter: a test firing for spacex's falcon 9 ended in a disastrous explosion on cape canaveral. it was hauling an israeli satellite. facebook wanted to expand facebook access to africa. >> it was a major loss for the satellite on board. that was a $195 million satellite. that was destroyed. >> reporter: spacex released a statement saying, there was an anomaly on the pad resulting in the loss of a vehicle and its payload. it went on to say there were no injuries. the blast was felt miles away and billows of smoke poured into the sky. the falcon 9 has experienced problems before. one rocket exploded shortly after liftoff in 2015. and another experienced a failed landing earlier this year. the commercial space company is a critical partner for nasa. it carries supplies and equipment to the international space station. >> nasa has a $1.6 billion contract with spacex to launch cargo ships to the international space station.

>> reporter: spacex says the reusable falcon 9 rocket along with the spacecraft are designed to transport people into space and those flights were scheduled for next year. it's unclear how today's explosion will affect the flight's schedule. jamie yuccas, cbs news, new york. >> facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg posted online he is deeply disappointed to their that spacex's launch failure destroyed the company's satellite. but he says that his team remains committed to its mission of connecting everyone. the falcon 9 cost $62 million. the next flight to the international space station was scheduled for november. on the storm watch, now hurricane hermine is soaking florida's gulf coast. the sunshine state is pummeled with relentless rainfall and howling winds. the storm already submerged streets in gulfport and dumped more than 9" of rain on the state. the governor declared a state of emergency in more than 50 florida counties. and to make matters more difficult, people are being told to expect possible

tornadoes. kpix 5's roberta gonzales is keeping an eye on storms from coast to coast. >> michelle, when you just said hurricane hermine, that's the first time we have heard it here on kpix 5 because this tropical storm has now been upgraded to a hurricane. it's gathering strength and momentum out over the gulf waters. in fact, you can still see right here this is the core. this area right here is the center of the particular hurricane. let me see if i can -- kind of difficult because it just happened here. but all this is beginning to move in this direction. it's going to make landfall and when that happens, we are going to see 15 inches of rain. we could see those possibilities of tornadoes and you can't count on the path. it's supposed to scrape across orlando into jacksonville so we'll keep a watchful eye. last time we had a hurricane in that area make landfall was 11 years ago and that was wilma. meanwhile, let's share with you what's going on with madeline and with lester. rain, heavy rain, has moved into that area up to 10 inches of rain in some of the mountainous areas in the highest altitudes so the big

island we are counting on some mudslides and again a strong storm surge. as we bring you on back to take a look at our tracking map, madeline now downsized or downgraded, i should say, to a tropical storm. as it pulls away from the hawaiian islands we are still looking for the very strong storm surge. this is lester, it should be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it skirts past the hawaiian islands on sunday. we'll keep a watchful eye on a very busy hurricane season as well as your labor day forecast. that's later on in the newscast. donald trump is back on the campaign trail after his whirlwind trip to mexico. craig boswell reports, the clinton campaign is calling that effort a failure. >> reporter: donald trump spoke to the same veterans group this morning that hillary clinton addressed yesterday. he promised to create a new american future. >> in this future, we will have an honest government that includes an honest state

department, not "pay for play." she probably didn't mention that to you yesterday. >> reporter: trump's american legion event follows his meeting wednesday with mexico's president and a major speech last night on immigration. >> we will build a great wall along the southern border. [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: president enrique pena nieto says he told trump that mexico will not pay for the wall. but the republican presidential nominee has a different version. >> we did discuss the wall. we didn't discuss payment of the wall. >> reporter: despite the discrepancy the trump can page set a new record in online small donations. the clinton campaign says trump choked. later the campaign amended its statement saying it turned out trump got beat in the room and lied about it. >> he didn't have the guts to look the mexican president in the eye and bring up the central position in his campaign. it was a diplomatic embarrassment. and it shows that the guy's not ready for prime time.

alone." a new york woman says jetblue accidentally sent her 5-year- old son to the wrong city. the woman told the "new york daily news" that she was shocked when jetblue staffers presented her with another little boy on august 17th at kennedy airport. her lawyer says that child was supposed to be in boston but somehow the two got mixed up. both children eventually made it to their correct destinations. the number of americans filing for unemployment benefits rose last week. but it's still unde 300,000. the jobs report is released tomorrow by the government. the dow is down now about 23 points. we know that investors will be watching the jobs report very closely. strong numbers make it more likely the fed will decide to raise interest rates this year, possibly even this month. more overseas service is launching today at mineta international airport.

air chinatownsed it's starting new -- china announced it's starting new nonstop flights from san jose to shanghai. the first flight from sjp departs in a few minutes. it's not even labor day yet and walmart has its eyes on christmas. they are opening their layaway program tomorrow. it's also out with its list of the 25 hottest toys for the holidays picked by kids. it includes a teenage mutant ninja turtle, remote control, and disney princess carriage. >> i want one. >> i bet do you! >> and the remote control. >> why does that not surprise me? you know what i want for christmas? anything but coal. >> okay. >> okay? because that's all i been getting the last couple of christmases. >> that's what we were planning to send you. is still quite deep at 1,000 feet. a lot of condensation. we have drizzle. temperatures now 50s, 60s and 70s. it's a cool afternoon in san francisco. when you couple in the winds west-northwest at 13, a little fog in "fogtember." calm winds in san jose. we have clearing in vallejo at 10. antioch is reporting a west wind at 10, as well. orinda east of the bay 61 cool degrees. hey, bill, that's unseasonably cool but he does report as far as our weather watcher are concerned some partly sunny skies as the area of low clouds and fog finally begins to retreat back towards the coast. now, our futurecast does promise us a little sliver of some sunshine around ocean beach, pacifica and the sunset district by 7 p.m. but overnight as we clear out we'll begin to see the low clouds and fog form again before pushing back onshore so what you need to know today is that it's unseasonably mild to

downright cool in locations. about three degrees cooler than what we experienced yesterday. it's all due to that right there, an upper-level area of low pressure and just hanging tight right there bringing some rainfall to the pacific northwest. it's encouraging our marine layer and bringing us that heavy drizzle. 86 degrees in sacramento. if you are making vacation plans for the long holiday in the high sierra, 78 degrees just about each and every day, it's a stagnant weather pattern but overnight dipping into the 30s. we have temperatures 60s, 70s and 80s. my outside number today 86 degrees, livermore 82. should be at 92 for this time of the year. and notice the mild weather pattern continues through the holiday. we are going to continue with our news broadcast right after this. don't go away! ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

in the u-s and around the world. kpix 5's sharon chin explains... it's how she does i a south bay teenager brings smiles to children in the u.s. and around the world. kpix 5's sharon chin explains it's how she does it that makes her this week's bay area jefferson award winner. ♪[ music ] >> okay, you guys go to all the trash cans on this side. >> reporter: sonali ranaweera leads fellow students in an afternoon routine at a high school in san jose. they collect bottles and cans that the 16-year-old trades for cash at the recycling center. the work can be filthy. >> just knowing that i'm doing something good, that makes me not even think about the gross part. i want to change someone's life. i want to make someone smile. >> reporter: she has raised more than $60,000 through recycling for smiles, a

nonprofit she founded in 2011. a quarter of the money has gone to new york-based smile train to fund corrective surgery for nearly 60 children with cleft lips or palates. the community fundraising director offers high praise. >> sonali is one of our superstars. we don't see a lot of kids who have the initiative and drive that she has demonstrated at such a young age. >> reporter: her community service project started five years ago when she was 11 years old. her parents gave her $100 for christmas and said use this money to make a difference. sonali wanted to pay for a child's surgery but didn't have enough money so she turned to recycling and didn't stop. today students, relatives, friends and businesses help her collect and sort bottles and cans. volunteer alison sanchez has learned something about giving. >> you don't have to, like, build a hospital to help a lot of people. you can just start a club like sonali did and her own charity. >> reporter: a teacher calls
