he says the 49ers quarterback has a point by not standing during the national anthem. >> burglars lead a security guard on a high speed chase after causing vandalism in a car dealership. >> kpix5 jackie ward on the investigation now under way. >> reporter: this is where it all started. at this dealership on peralta boulevard in fremont. police say around 11:30 last night, someone broke into the used car dealership and stole all of the car keys plus a car. after that happened, police believe an associate or an employee of the dealership went to the office to monitor it. around 2:00 a.m., that associate called police and told them he was driving and following not one, but two cars that had been stolen from the lot. the pursuit ended up on 880 northbound. where one of the stolen cars crashed on thornton just before

dakota. while the other kept driving. police tell us the driver was able to escape. and the associate who had been following them also fled the scene. >> the vehicle that rolled over, which you can see behind me here, it was -- we were unable to get the party out of it. they didn't seem to be in distress. but due to the damage, the fire department, fremont fire, did a great job cutting the roof off the vehicle to get the party out. >> reporter: not long after that, the second car crashed at 880 and tenyson. that suspect was taken into custody. >> it is important to note that they were not in pursuit any law enforcement agencies. none of us were involved yet. >> reporter: three bystander vehicles were involved in the crashes p and police are still looking for the driver of that first crash. they are basing their investigation primarily on witness accounts. in fremont, jackie ward, kpix 5. right now, san jose police are looking for a convicted sex offender suspected of trying to force women into his car. david lee russell is suspected of two kidnapping attempts within the past week.

one was last monday. near meridian and hamilton avenues in the city's willow glenn area. and the other was on thursday, at hillsdale and navares avenue near communications hill. police describe russell as a transient who previously committed violent assaults against women and they believe he is driving a nissan rogue with no license plates. the san francisco police officer's association has endorsed interim chief tony chaplain for the permanent post of police chief. he has been with the department for 26 years. he was appointed interim chief after form the former chief resigned in may. in endorsing him, the union president says the union which represents over 99% of all sfpd officers is looking for the right leader at the right time. and this week, the public can weigh in on the selection. the police department is holding a series of meetings to get input. and the next one is planned for wednesday, at san francisco city hall. you can also fill out a

survey online. you will find it under links on our web site, cbs sf .com. www.cbs-sf.com. at least 60 people have applied and 11 of the applicants including chaplin are current or former members of the department. new at noon, san francisco 49 bruce miller is behind bars, and less than an hour ago, he was charged with assault. the fullback was arrested in san francisco this morning. police say that he tried to check into the fisherman's wharf marriott hotel last night but was told it was full. miller then returned this time knocking on a guest door. after the guest told him that he had the wrong room, miller allegedly attacked him, and his elderly father. both men were taken to the hospital for treatment. you may remember last year miller was in court for battery charges in santa clara. he was accused of smashing his then fiance' cell phone during a heated argument. the team did release a statement, a short while ago, saying it is aware of the report regarding miller and just moments ago the 49ers

released miller from the team. well, president obama is getting behind 49ers quarterback colin kaerpernick, his right to sit during the national anthem, to protest police violence against african- americans. the president was asked about it on his trip to china. he admits to not knowing much about the controversy but says that he supports kaerpernick's rights. >> if nothing else, what he has done is he has generated, you know, more conversation around some topics that need to be talked about. >> kaerpernick's protests have spurred outrage from the sant clare police union and threatened to boycott workers 49ers game but the quarterback is also getting a lot of support. one of his supporters is u.s. soccer star megan rapino. she took a knee during the national anthem at the seattle rains game against the chicago red stars. she says it was an intentional nod to kaepernick and everything he stands for and

thinks the way he has been treated over the controversy is disgusting. to politics now and the race for the white house. the election is 63 days away. and labor day is traditionally the time when presidential campaigns kick into high gear. as mark albert shows us, both candidates are courting voters in the battle ground state of ohio today. >> vice president joe biden and tim kaine kicked off labor day in pittsburgh. >> when fewer workers are in unions, wages are lower and when more workers are in unions, wages are higher. >> and hillary clinton meets with voters in ohio this afternoon. many of whom still have questions about her e-mails while she was secretary of state. clinton told fbi agents she doesn't recall any briefing or training on how to handle classified information. and she says she thought the "c" marking on confidential e- mails meant it was marked in alphabetical order. 40% of voters says clinton's ex

returns to san francisco, for another fundraiser. according to an invite to potential donors. this could be the last visit to the bay area before election day. the cheapest ticket is $250. but the invite is asking for donations of up to $100,000. no word on where the event is being held. right now, hermine is threatening several states along the northeast coast. with dangerous rip currents and storm surges. this comes after the storm made land fall on friday. in several southern states. teresa duncan reports from seaside heights new jersey, where folks are concerned about flooding. >> reporter: along the jersey shore, overnight, hermine whipped up strong waves. at sea, the choppy waters rocked this royal caribbean cruise ship headed from new jersey, to bermuda. >> when you see the crew on a cruise ship starting to get dizzy and sick, then you know it has gotten pretty bad. >> derrick beeterman was one of 6,000 people on board the ship

during the storm. >> maybe 1:00 a.m., the whole boat started rocking. people started getting sick. they started distributing vomit bags around. >> reporter: the deadly storm made land fall last friday as a category one hurricane. it is already hammered coastal areas stretching from florida to virginia. knocking out power for hundreds of thousands. and causing widespread damage. >> it is now targeting the eastern seaboard. from maryland, to massachusetts. >> we have been doing this for almost 30 years. we see the sunrise on labor day. so we are here no matter what. so this hurricane is nothing. >> reporter: governor chris christie says hermine won't come close to having the same destructive power as superstorm sandy in 2012. still, he is urging people not to take any chances. >> we don't want to see people have injuries or loss of life because of going to the ocean in dangerous conditions. >> reporter: hermine may regain

hurricane strength but the worst of the storm is pretty much over and continues to move offshore. teresa duncan, cbs news, seasides new jersey. and roberta gonzalez is in the weather center tracking hermine. >> we were saying that the bulk of the activity is pretty much done and over with. i got to tell you, this is one dangerous storm. no longer a hurricane. and i wanted to call on this. it is our water vapor imagery, and only a few minutes old, and if you look out towards new york, look out towards the open water, you can see the spiral activity there. and hermine still has winds sustained at 65 miles an hour. and so i am zooming on in, and you can see the rain bands, moving around it, in a counter- clockwise position. looking like it wants to head directly to the east towards new york. and right now, i am looking at a huge ridge of high pressure to the north. towards canada. that's going to block that system right there and it is going to spin right there perhaps all the way into thursday. and speaking of the coast, our coast is clear. and we do have sunny skies and currently temperatures are in the 60s and 70s.

on i-880. family and friends are remembering two east bay teenagers who died in a car crash on i-880. 17-year-old izaiah mease and joe laramo students were students in the unified school

district. the crash happened early yesterday morning in hayward. investigators say one of the teens lost control of the car and slammed into a pick-up truck. the school district posted on the facebook page overnight saying the new haven community is mourning the tragic loss of our students, our condolences go out to the families and we offer our support in this difficult time. back open, after shut down, when two correctional officers were shot over the weekend. officials say a visitor and ex convict opened fire and critically wounded the officers in a confrontation this weekend. the suspects quickly gave themselves up. but the facility was closed to visitors following the incident. officials say they are looking into improving security at the jail. a wildfire in the far northern part of the state has grown to 25,000 acres. the gap fire has been 40% contained. the blaze has been burning more than a week now. more than 1800 firefighters are working to put out the flames.

investigators are still trying to determine the cause. the soberanes wildfire in monterey county has now passed the 100,000-acre mark. cal fire made the announcement late this morning. the fire has been burning since july 22, when it started as an illegal campfire and destroyed 57 homes between carmel and big sáur. and now 60% contained. and full containment is not expected until the end of the month. now, let's get our forecast now, with roberta. >> i want to say with the soberanes fire, i did receive an e-mail from brent ellen, and he captured this morning's sun rise in the soberanes canyon and he says it is the first time visiting the area since the fire broke out on july 22. you can obviously see a lot of the smoke and the haze still in the atmosphere there. and brent, we thank you so much for sending that picture to us right here at kpix5. it is on the smoky and hazy side. our coast is clear. we have temperatures responding

to the abundance of sunshine. right here. we are looking up toward ocean beach. a high temperature of 65. right now, san francisco, it is sporting 65. and 10 degrees warmer than that to the east in livermore and to the north in santa rosa. this is the weather watcher, hi there, paul, and i got to admit, paul is like the only one that came inside to participate in our weather watcher program this afternoon. everybody else is outside playing, and he is reporting 77 degrees in brentwood and i thank you, sir, for that information. and so here is what you need to know today. it is going to turn out to be a warmer day than yesterday. still having some clouds linger around the dalc city area. and lots of sunshine today and warmer than yesterday, by a good 5 to 8 degrees. winds are still under 10 but picking up later this afternoon. and out of the west, 10 to 20 miles an hour. and satellite radar, there you have it, the clouds, wiping away. they will return later on tonight. but the big headline for us, it is the area of low pressure, it is parked over there, it is now wiggling inland. as it does so, the high pressure is building in its wake, and the end result is

advisor estimates that a 10% increase in labor day weekend travel this year, while most of those people are driving, air travel is also up by about 6%. well, if you are driving, you will get some relief at the pump. and this labor day, gas prices are at the lowest levels since 2004. and the national average for a gallon of regular is $2.21 today. and that is 20 cents cheaper than this time last year. according to aaa, the state average for regular gas is $2.68. san francisco right now, it is $2.83. in san jose, it is $2.70. if you are in the bay, you may want to give yourself some extra time, if your holiday plans include a ride on bart. there is no train service today at the glenn park, balboa park and daly city stations due to track repairs. a shuttle bus will take riders between the closed stations. normal service resumes tomorrow. and right now, the parking lots on either end of the golden gate bridge are closed.

the lots at the welcome center and the point will reopen at 5:00 this afternoon. the goal is to minimize the backups from all of that holiday traffic. well, hayward is celebrating as the third most diverse city in the nation. with a special mural this labor day. >> the city commissioned andrew cong knight to create this mural on mission boulevard, one love, one family, faces of hayward california and putting the fime touches on it today. it shows portraits of hard- working hayward families celebrating the diverse and rich culture. samsung is recalling the 7 after reports of an explosion. a look at how much it will cost the company to replace all of those phones. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,

uber's self- driving cars may be movi today's tip of the day is casaba melons, a mixed melon. there are plenty in the market. but not always the most popular melons. maybe because of how they look. they almost look like a gord with the rough edges all the way around. let me pick one up and show you. but let me tell you, they are wonderful. when you cut them open, the sugar is out of this world. even though they look like they could stay around for a while, they don't. as a matter of fact, the shelf life on these melons with the sugar content so high, it is not as long as those other

mixed melons. when you buy them, make sure the color is nice all the way around, heavy for their size and a small carvedy in there and a wonderful -- cavity in there and a wonderful aroma. store them on the counter, two or three days, four days at the most or put them in the refrigerate. forget. that leave them on the counter and put the unused portion in the refrigerator. sometimes it hurts the flavor to be placed in the refrigerator of the melon. when you cut them open in the inside, that's what it looks like. the casaba melon, delicious. i'm tony tantillo, your fresh grocer and always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy. i love them. uber self driving cars may be moving through san francisco traffic. the web site got the video of the car where the uber advanced technology center logo on it. and it is snot clear if it is one of the self driving cars being used in a road test or just being used for other research. the cars are being tested in pittsburgh. but there has not been an
