to be among the first to have it. maria medina is live in palo alto where apple enthusiasts were in for a surprise. >> reporter: guys, you can see the store behind me is bustling and the only line that's left over is made up of those who preordered the iphone 7. the doors opened up here early at 8:00 for the release and there was a lot of excitement but not just because of the iphone 7. tim cook appeared out of nowhere behind the glass door to join employees in palo alto in counting down the much- anticipated opening. >> 3, 2, 1! whoo! >> reporter: once inside, iphone apple fans found out if they would be able to get their hands on the sold-out iphone 7 plus. >> what do they say? >> they truly don't have any 7

pluses like they said yesterday. >> reporter: david eaton was in line for more than 24 hours arriving at 6:30 yesterday to be the first in line. but that's nothing compared to justin harris. he camped outside the union square apple store for a week only to find out hours before the doors opened he wouldn't get an iphone 7 plus. >> they are sold out. >> i'm not expecting to get anything today. >> reporter: not everyone went home empty-handed. many preordered the 7 plus like eduardo. you're one of the first people to get the iphone 7 plus. >> pretty stoked. i'm looking forward to all the new cameras and all the new features. >> reporter: this person got a souvenir, money can't buy. a selfie with tim cook inside an apple store. >> i'm getting one in two or three weeks. i got to meet tim cook so that works. >> reporter: so this is the line made up of those who

preordered the iphone 7. the line will be here all day. on this side there was once a line halfway down the block this morning. they are hoping to get whatever is the left. not sure if this is a sign they have all given up hope [chuckling]. you can order the iphone still online but it will take weeks. live in palo alto, maria medina, kpix 5. the iphone 7 in jet black also sold out but at last check the other colors are still available. kcbs financial reporter jason brooks says iphone sales are a bigger boost for cupertino based applen that many expected. >> apple is enjoying its best week in over a year strong four- day winning streak thanks to strong preorders for the new iphones. a number of analysts are surprised by the strong demand and the iphone 7 isn't a major makeover from the prior iteration of the phone. the next big upgrade isn't expected until next year.

>> while apple stock has steadily climbed most of the week, it is down so far today. apple's big day comes amid trouble times for rival samsung. the consumer product safety commission is warning people to immediately stop using samsung's galaxy note 7 smartphone. the recall is in response to cases of batteries exploding and catching fire. flames ripped through a townhouse overnight on ticonderoga drive. firefighters knocked it out quickly. 8 people were displaced. the townhome was destroyed. two neighboring units received moderate smoke and water damage. one woman had to be restrained after attempting to run back into the townhouse to save her dog. unfortunately, that dog died. the cause of the fire is now under investigation. >> today jury selection begins in the trial of a man accused

of assaulting bart police officers. cell phone video from bystanders was widely seen after the incident in july at a bart station in san francisco. during the trial of michael smith jurors may see footage from officer body cam. that may show a different perspective and what happened before bystanders started recording. the house financial services committee is launching an investigation of san francisco-based wells fargo bank. the probe will look into possible illegal activity by wells fargo. the bank says that it fired more than 5,000 workers for opening new accounts without customer knowledge. critics say that the workers were trying to meet wells fargo' aggressive sales goals. u.s. and california regulators have already fined wells fargo a combined $185 million. governor brown just signed a bill to protect nail salon workers. kpix 5's anne makovec spoke to

the bay area assembly member who pushed for it. >> reporter: the new law is meant to polish the not so pretty side of nail salons. [ non-english language ] >> reporter: through a translator, the manicurist explains. >> workers end up doing more than they are required to such as cleaning the floors, mopping the bathrooms, even taking the owners' kids to work to school sometimes. >> reporter: now all nail salons in california will be required to post signs about workers' rights laws, minimum wage, overtime, meal periods and retaliation protection all in languages their employees understand. >> most of them don't speak english as their first language. it's hard to communicate with them. they don't know their rights quite often. >> reporter: the assemblyman wrote the nail salon worker protection bill along with the california healthily nail salon collaborative. >> when there's an inadequate price for service someone is bearing that gap in income or wage. >> reporter: sometimes that's

a cruise ship is now docked in new a live look from wall street on this friday. right now the dow is down about 99 points. a cruise ship is found docked in new york city after completing a one month 900-mile voyage from alaska via the northwest passage. the dangerous route is normally covered with thick sea ice but as don champion reports, warmer weather made the historic voyage possible. >> reporter: the cruise ship crystal serenity entered new york harbor friday morning and sailed into history. it is the first full sized ship to sail the treacherous northwest passage. the captain -- >> it was quite a voyage. >> reporter: the northwest passage is where the arctic ocean links the northern atlantic and pacific oceans. glaciers and thick sea ice normally make the route

impassable but warming temperatures have thinned the ice and cleared the path. the ship had extra safety equipment including ice radar. >> we also brought on board two very experienced canadian ice pilots who brought the -- the -- the knowledge about ice. >> reporter: the ship left alaska on august 16 on its 900- mile journey through the arctic and on to new york. >> the trip was really exciting. >> reporter: barbara peter and robert rosen wall called it a grade adventure. >> the idea was to see wild things and ice and we did. >> reporter: 900 passengers took the historic voyage aboard the crystal serenity and paid between $1,000 and $4,000 a day for the experience. peters says the irony that the warming earth is the only thing that made the trip possible wasn't lost on her. >> the arctic is ground zero for global warming. anyone who thinks that global warming isn't happening only needs to go to the arctic. >> reporter: crystal serenity

we like to say when i went to veterinary school since then no more than 6 hours during the day they should go without urinating in the morning at breakfast, lunchtime and late afternoon and before bed is ideal. and do know there are some people with work schedules and they can't get to their pet for long periods of time but problems that occur are urinary tract infections and if you don't treat a urinary tract infection it can go up the your right ter to the kidney and the bladder and it can go up into the kidneys and create a problem. that's a really bad consequence. if you see your dog drinking more water or feeling kind of list less, i would definitely recommend checking the urine to see whether or not there's an infection. >> does it depend on the breed? >> no. 50% of dogs and cats may not
