now at 5... young woman at the center of a g dozens your realtime ca ptioner is linda marie macdonald. now at 5:00 a young woman at the center of a sex scandal involving dozens of bay area officers now wants one city to pay up by the millions. we hear from the mayor. >> a pipe bomb goes off in new jersey where thousands were supposed to hit the streets for a race. now the fbi is investigating and some bay area police are stepping up patrols. >> and heating up on this final weekend of summer. the high temperatures sending plenty of people outdoors. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> i'm brian hackney. a live look from our dublin camera now. warm temperatures inland, but just across the bridge, it's a different pictures, 30 miles, 30 degrees away, here's ocean beach in san francisco. fog has been playing touch and go with the coastline all day

long and here's the current temperatures in the 90s inland only in the low 60s close to the coast in san francisco. and here's why it's warming up. a big ridge of high pressure parked over the west coast. pressure is up. and so are the temperatures today inland at least. at the same time, today is a "spare the air" day. and that will continue through tomorrow with poor air quality in the east and south bays. also a beach hazard statement in effect for tomorrow from beaches down from sonoma to monterey. big rip currents and breakers a problem through tomorrow night. finally not long into next week there are changes on the way and we'll have the forecast in just a few minutes. $66 million for a teenager's lost innocence. that's the cost according to the attorney for the young woman at the center of an east bay police sex scandal. kpix 5's da lin talked to the lawyer today about the newly filed claim. >> jasmine did nothing that was wrong. she didn't make any mistakes. she was a victim. these police officers created the crime reporter: now her

attorneys will try to make oakland pay, $66 million. >> the claim is based on $3 million per perpetrator plus the aggregate total amount against the entity for covering up. >> reporter: the claim, a precursor to a lawsuit names the city, the police department, 11 officers, and former chief sean whent. jasmine's attorneys indicate there was obstruction of justice at the highest level within the police department accusing former chief whent of knowing about the sexual misconduct and covering it up. >> i know the question is how do we have jasmine recover? they have created a life-long deficit in her. she will never recover. >> reporter: oakland has 45 days to respond. it's unlikely city leaders will pay out the claim given the large amount. >> i have tremendous compassion for the victim of this matter, her family. and so again, we respect that people have a right to use our justice system and seek redress

of the wrongs. we will also do our duty to act in the interests of the city of oakland. >> reporter: mayor libby schaaf says she can't talk about pending litigation but says since the scandal, they have taken steps to try to restore public trust. attorney charles bonner says he will sue every agency that's taken advantage of jasmine and richmond is next. i'm da lin, kpix 5. >> richmond city officials admit they played a role in sending jasmine abuslin to rehab in florida but not to impede justice. investigators are trying to piece together what led to a homicide in bay point. the contra costa county sheriff's office says a man was killed this morning. no details about the circumstances yet. in richmond, police say a teenager was apparently targeted in a homicide. it happened about 10:30 last night if he bella vista apartment complex -- at the bella vista apartment complex in the hilltop area. officers found a 17-year-old boy with multiple gunshot wounds who later died. investigators are trying to pin down a motive.

they say the victim didn't live in that complex. in redwood city, the search is on for a missing child. 11-year-old david mendoza was last seen yesterday afternoon at kennedy middle school. he is considered at risk due to his age. if you see him, give police a call. and san francisco police are beefing up patrols after a pipe bomb exploded today in new jersey. it happened along a route where a charity race with thousands of runners was about to start. brook silva-braga reports from the scene reporter: the explosion blew a hole in this plastic trash can just as runners in the semper five charity race were due to pass around 9:30 this morning but heavy turnout for the race benefiting marines and sailors slowed registration and delayed the start. no runners were on the course and no one was hurt. >> i heard it and i yelled to my neighbor and said, what was that! >> we are all working side by sighted with our law enforcement partners -- side by side with our law enforcement partners with federal, state and local officials and we are

investigating to see who is responsible. >> reporter: officials say other items were found in the trash can and new jersey state police bomb squad rendered them safe. nearby residents of the jersey shore beach town were temporarily evacuated. trash cans in the area were searched but no suspects and no other devices were found. brook silva-braga, new jersey. >> after today's explosion, san francisco police released a statement saying, quote, sfpd has increased uniform high visibility presence throughout the city. we are working with allied law enforcement agencies and we are encouraging the public to report any suspicious activities. two people are hurt after a seaplane crash in lakeport today. it happened while the pilot was participating in the clearlake splash-in event. the plane was in the water 500 feet offshore. no life-threatening injuries. the ntsb is investigating. bart is back to normal after an equipment problem led to smoke around a train and

that meant systemwide disruptions earlier. the smoke developed at about 8:30 a.m. at the 16th street station in san francisco's mission district this morning. the station was shut down for about half-hour while the smoke dissipated. trains passing through could only use one set of tracks. there were delays in all directions for several hours. and a reminder, there is no bart service between glen park and daly city this weekend. people traveling to sfo can expect delays up to an hour. crews are installing sound dampening equipment to the curved track way and other maintenance. today people touched by the aids epidemic are marking 25 years since the san francisco memorial site was created. it was made at a time when the aids crisis was at its peak. kpix 5's jackie ward live at the aids memorial grove in golden gate park with the story reporter: brian, the national aids memorial spans 10 acres of golden gate park and it's away from streets and ball

streets and playgrounds. it's meant for people to come and reflect. >> sunshine through the redwoods. it's a meadow. it is a beautiful garden. it's all these things. and it's a pretty special place. >> reporter: this grove is a sacred place for healing and remembering. >> he was somebody who lived life to its fullest. hard and fast every day. and, um, he always commanded the energy of the room everywhere he went. >> reporter: and for jack whose late partner steven envisioned this oasis when it was an overgrown swamp in golden gate park. >> my official title is like the volunteer that didn't know when to go home. >> reporter: -- it's a place he visits to remember steven who died from aids in 1989. >> there was a group that got together and said, we would love to build a -- to create a sanctuary or grove or something in the city to remember all these that we keep losing. >> reporter: when steven died, jack decided he would follow through with steven's plans and

began donating a lot of his time to the grove and its existence. it's this partnership between volunteers like jack and the city's rec and park department that keeps this place special. >> parks have a function to inspire and to connect. and i don't know that there is a more inspirational spot in this park or anywhere. >> reporter: even though aids has killed many people, their friends and family come here to make sure their spirits live on in the trees and the flowers and in their hearts. 175,000 volunteer hours have been put into working in this grove. and every, single dollar used to fund projects here is privately funded. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. a touching reunion today in the south bay. bryan stow was among the many patients at the santa clara valley medical rehabilitation center who came to reconnect with friends and staff. he spent months at that facility recovering from an

attack at a dodgers game that left him in a coma an today, he was asked to speak to patients. >> there's doctors, nurses, therapists, people i don't even know helped me get this far that have seen me do this. it's amazing to me. >> so says he doesn't remember his time at the rehab center. when it came time to speak today he reminded patients what you can believe, you can achieve. coming up a standoff stalls an amtrak train for hours. how police finally got an armed man into custody and passengers on their way. >> plus, an injury on the baseball field. not a player but a security guard. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,

injured. the guard was one of several a security breach at at&t park leaves a guard injured seriously. he was one of several people who rushed in to detain a fan who ran on the field during last night's game. he was the first to get to the man. he tackled him. in the course of stopping him, the guard got a broken leg. he somehow managed to get back on his feet and helped hold the fan before he was helped off the field. an 8-hour standoff with an armed man on an amtrak train so far. somebody on the san diego bound train reported seeing a weapon and things got out of control. police were called.

passengers evacuated. and the standoff began. most of the night the train was stalled in the san fernando valley. police finally used tear gas to break the stalemate. suspect is a 46-year-old man from oxnard and as you can see, he was taken into custody. coming up, donald trump talks tough on immigration while hillary clinton fires back about what some are calling threats he made against her. >> well, we have already chatted about the weather today. but what's ahead? changes, my friend. we'll document them when we cover the forecast as we look live toward the coit tower. it's all coming up.

expressing regret for what calls "unintentional loss of life." a u.s. air strike apparently hit syrian forces today. now the obama administration is expressing regret for what it calls it unintentional deaths. the air strike reportedly hit a base in eastern syria surrounded by isis fighters. syrian officials say at least 62 of their soldiers died. and the air raid allowed the extremists to advance and

overrun syrian army positions! the u.n. security council is holding a closed emergency session at russia's request but the u.s.'s u.n. envoy calls it a stunt. in the race for the white house, donald trump is pledging to crack down on illegal immigration. meanwhile, hillary clinton's campaign is firing back against trump's latest controversial comments regarding her security. craig boswell reports from new york reporter: donald trump addressed the remembrance project in houston saturday. the group advocates for tougher immigration laws. >> politicians ignore your cries for help. but i never will. >> reporter: trump pledged to the families of americans killed by illegal immigrants that he would shine a national spotlight on the issue. >> not one more american life should be given up in the name of open borders. >> reporter: on friday, the republican presidential nominee appeared to threaten hillary

clinton while criticizing her position on gun control. he says clinton's secret service team should disarm. >> take their guns away, she doesn't want guns. take them. let's see what happens to her. >> reporter: clinton's campaign said in a statement today, inciting people to violence, it is an unacceptable quality in anyone seeking the job of commander-in-chief. the latest cbs news, washington post poll shows 67% of voters believe trump is a risky choice. bernie sanders held several campaign events for clinton on college campuses in ohio today. >> and you have got to do everything that you can to make sure that secretary clinton and ted strickland win this state. >> reporter: the cbs news poll also shows clinton and trump are in a statistical tie when third party candidates are included in the vote. craig boswell, cbs news, new york. thousands of people hit the pavement today for the walk to end alzheimer's in san francisco. the three-mile walk began and

ended in the great meadow at fort mason. organizers set a goal of $1 million. alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the u.s. and while organizers say a cure is close, it has already devastated more than 5 million families. >> i'm here for my mother eleanor who graduated magna cum laude with honors when she was 73 years old from college. that eleanor is no longer with us. >> members of our kpix staff walked today to show their support for alzheimer's research. our team was led by sports director dennis o'donnell who also emceed the event. >> good. the weather cooperated for those folks, as well. as it will continue to do for the rest of the weekend. plenty of sunshine around the bay area and here's proof. numbers are still in the 90s inland to the low 70s right along the shoreline. in san francisco, 62 degrees

right now. and in concord, 92 degrees. so what do we expect next? not much in the way of low clouds in early-morning hours overnight. with fog and low clouds at the shore, clear start to sunday. and a fairly decent day, as well. probably the warmest day of the week will be tomorrow. numbers will be near 100 degrees inland for sunday because of this. the reason we mentioned a minute ago, the strong high pressure in the eastern pacific is sending rain up into the pacific northwest. but for us, be it's just warm temperatures. not exceptional. we are not going to hit record highs but we'll be near 100 tomorrow and it will cool against by tuesday afternoon when temperatures plummet into the mid-80s inland. you will stay cool at the shoreline but a lot to do this weekend. the, um, oakland raiders taking on the falcons tomorrow in a game to be broadcast by coincidence on -- on kpix 5. hm. sunny and pleasant for that game. temperatures in the mid-70s. a grand prix of sonoma will be happening tomorrow 88 degrees.

that looks nice. lafayette art and wine fest 90 degrees all weekend sunny and warm beautiful lafayette. and then there's the norcal dragon boat festival. they are fun but there's nothing like good old video to show people moving. 100 teams competing out at lake merritt. one from the philippines. they will be going at it all day with the dragon boats out on the lake happening all weekend under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s. art festival happening 77 degrees tomorrow for that. forecast overnight lows for the bay area will be in the mid-50s to near 60. sun-up tomorrow 6:45 a.m. sunny in the mountains and warm, too, with 80 degrees at tahoe, 67 at yosemite. 100 degrees at fresno tomorrow. and 101 in concord. 15 degrees above average in the east bay. 87 for san jose tomorrow. 82 in oakland, 77 warm degrees in san francisco. so tomorrow the warmest day of the week with 97 at morgan

hill. sunnyvale 85. 91 at cupertino. east bay looking good but look at all the triple digits. all over 100 degrees. the north bay doesn't escape, either. 90 at napa. 91 for novato. 91 at petaluma. 89 for santa rosa. and plenty warm for ukiah, lakeport and clearlake. extended forecast calls for temperatures in the 100s on sunday, a little bit of a break by monday. and then tuesday, wednesday, thursday, the numbers fall back into the 80s. very much closer to average by the time we get into tuesday in the latter half of the week. the low clouds increase at the shoreline but in the meantime sunshine and plenty of it. and speaking of warmth and sunshine, mr. sunshine himself. >> here he is!
