5:37 pm
states. our poll shows donald trump leading in missouri, a state which has voted republican in recent presidential elections. the potential game changer could be the first head-to-head debate monday night. here is paul reid. >> he really shows up and swings and does a great job. >> reporter: trump's campaign manager isn't the only one comparing the debate to a sporting event. it is expected to be the most watched presidential debate in tv history. donald trump and hillary clinton's running mate say the first face to face showdown will be an opportunity for the candidates to showcase their strengths. >> hillary has been very specific about policy plans. we have a book out describing them. donald trump less so, but tomorrow is an opportunity to see whether donald will be specific about what he proposes to do. >> he's going to focus in this debate tomorrow night as he has throughout this election on the issues the american people care about. >> reporter: this weekend the campaign engaged in a twitter spat over the guest list. billionaire mark cuban, a frequent trump critic tweeted, just got a front row seat to

5:39 pm
also seen as able to bring the change that so many voters want. and two big reminders out of all of this for the debates, for all the talk about the candidates and their qualities, what voters say they want to hear is about the economy and who can fix it. and many voters say they're tuning in to watch their favorite candidate win. a reminder the partisans usually know what they're going to think before it even starts. and if they are just aren't that many undecided voters out there up for grabs. reena. >> ninan: thanks, anthony. a reminder, the first clinton-trump debate is just hours away. cbs news will have prime time coverage beginning at 9 p.m. eastern, 6:00 pacific monday. our dij nal network will provide live coverage throughout the day from half stras university in hempstead, new york. in syria there is little hope that a broken ceasefire will be revived. since late last week russian and syrian warplanes and roop troos have been hammering syria's largest city, aleppo.
5:40 pm
liz. >> at the start of the week we were watching a student party from a rooftop. when the war reignited. those are shells falling on rebel-held aleppo just after the syrian army declared the ceasefire was over. soon the warplanes were up too, bombing. the number of dead and wounded which had fallen to almost zero rocketed up. the front line of this civil war runs right through the center of aleppo. armed opposition fighters control this side. and syrian regime forces and their allies are here. 13 year old aya lives on the very edge of the government side. >> this here, what is that for. >> the snipers just a few hundred yards away are opposition fighters who over the past four years have aimed their weapons at syrian army positions deep in this neighborhood. >> did you lose some friends in
5:41 pm
this war? >> yes, have i lost many, she says. some were killed by mortars or snipers. some just left the country. many of those who didn't make a run for it are now living in the ruins of more, and desperate need. the ceasefire was supposed to let humanitarian aid reach them. but the main delivery route into aleppo has been a battleground for months. to let the aid flow, all sides including the syrian army were supposed to pull back. and it never did. because the negotiations to secure the road failed. in a war this savage, it's hard to sort fact from fiction. and it got even harder this week when a u.s. air strike hit syrian soldiers. by mistake, said the pentagon. a few days later a red kres ent aid convoy was attacked.
5:42 pm
>> aid, aid from the u.n. >> the u.s. says early indications show the russians were responsible, something moscow furiously denied. but public opinion in this country is shaped by syrian state media and the villain on its airways is always the united states. syrians also believe that america can make a big difference to the outcome of this war. and that the u.s. has a responsibility to use its diplomatic muscle and its power to help bring peace. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, damascus. >> ninan: coming up next, the view from russia of the u.s. presidential elections.

5:46 pm
>> reporter: if you want to know what putin is thinking, you talk to this man. certificating aye markoff, his political think thank has a direct line to the kem lynn which sort of denies the hacking allegations. >> it is central intelligence to the united states over this issue means no, nothing, they vus forget about that pt-- putin said hacking the dnc is a good thing. >> it appears he is condoning the hacking. >> yeah. very good. >> reporter: his own united russia party whack if it had been hacked into, how would he react then. >> negatively because it is his party. >> reporter: during the elections here, opponents of president putin were banned from appearing on state-controlled television. but images of donald trump and the american election have been getting plenty of air time. charlie d'agata, cbs news,

5:57 pm
>> here he comes, hobbling. >> it is gone. in a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened. >> reporter: it was the way he guided listeners through each game that won over generations of baseball fans. for at least nine nlgs his words transported them from their homes and cars into the dugout or on to the pitcher's mound. for the past 67 years from brooklyn to los angeles, this weekend fans filed into dodge erstadium to honor him. angel rodriguez is a walking tribute. >> nobody here that has not lived it. >> on vin skully appreciation day it was vin pitching out this gift, 50,000 letters went out to baseball fans thanking them for six decades of love and listening. >> dennis murphy drove five hours from san francisco to share this moment with his daughter. >> what is it about him that
5:58 pm
makes him the best? >> i think it's just the way he brings the game to life. the experience of the game of baseball. there is just-- the calm nature of his voice. >> he will call his final game in san francisco but this afternoon he signed off one last time from dodge erstadium. >> leave it to the dodgers. a game-winning homerun. >> baseball is described as a boy's game played by men. if that holds true, then vin skully will be forever young, his voice echoing through history for millions of fans to am could. mireya villarreal, cbs news, dodge erstadium. >> ninan: that's the cbs weekend news for this sunday. later on cbs, the 49th is he son premier of "60 minutes." and news continues on our digital network cbsn, cbs news.com. i'm reena ninan in new york. thank you for joining us. good night. captioning sponsored by cbs captioned by media access group at wgbh access.wgbh.org

erupts near cloverdale. and the weather.. isn't going to help matters. plus: this san francisco high- rise.. is getting lower by the day. now: people who paid millions to live there are bringing in their own engineers.. to get to the bottom of it. and: did oakland's mayor just miss her chance to keep the raiders in town? the comment she made.. that could cost the city its football team. good evening, i'm brian hackney. i'm juliette goodrich. we begin with that fast-moving fire in sonoma county. they're calling it the sawmill fire. it's burning in a remote area off geysers road... and geysers resort road. that's about 10 miles east of cloverdale. massive flames ripped through dry brush this afternoon.... and quickly spread over a hillside. the fire has exploded across nearly 15-hundred acres so far... right now, it is 10 percent contained.
6:00 pm
earlier today: planes dropped fire retardant over the blaze... to stop the spread of the flames. mandatory evacuations are in effect for 20 to 30 homes in the rural area where the fire is burning. but so far, no structures have been damaged. an evacuation center has been set up at the good shepherd lutheran church in healdsburg. we have a crew on the way to cloverdale right now. we'll keep you updated through this newscast. this all comes as the bay area swelters under a heat advisory.. and it's only going to get hotter. we're scrolling today s highs at the bottom right corner of your screen. in the vicinity of that fire now burning east of cloverdale, it's still hot at 91 degrees... and it's dry---humidity is around 13%...heat advisories posted in the vicinity. in fact... heat advisories are posted baywide, as we expect another day with temperatures climbing to near 100 degrees inland. we've seen readings close to that today, with san francisco at 91... santa rosa hit 97... livermore 94.
