jamie yuccas is at hofstra university in hamstead, new york. good morning, jamie. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. can you believe it, we're 43 days away from election day. that means the candidates are back on the election trail. this morning getting back out there after last night's debate. both of them saying they were the winners, touting themselves as that. of course there were attacks both personally and on policy. >> i have been a senator -- >> you haven't done it. >> reporter: the first of the three eagerly anticipated presidential debates was anything but friendly. >> hillary has experience but it's bad experience. >> i know you live in your own reality. >> reporter: the debate focused on topics voters have heard before. >> i will release my tax return when she releases her 33,000 e-mails that have been deleted. >> it was a mistake and i take responsibility for that. >> reporter: topics of race, national security and jobs dominated on the stage but it was the sometimes awkward and pointed attacks that are making headlines.

>> i don't believe she does have the stamina to be president of this country you need tremendous stamina. >> a man who can be provoked by a tweet should not have his fingers anywhere near the nuclear code. >> reporter: clinton questioned whether the businessman is ready to lead a nation. >> i prepared to be president. and i think that's a good thing. [ applause ] >> reporter: and trump accused clinton of being soft on crime. >> secretary clinton doesn't want to use a couple words and that's law and order. we need law and order. >> reporter: afterwards, trump reacted to his performance. across. she's not going to make america great again. she has been saying these things for years and nothing ever happens. >> reporter: while hillary clinton stopped by a nearby watch party to thank cheering supporters. >> we did more than talk about what to do to make america to work for everybody. >> reporter: the candidates are back on the trail today in battleground states. clinton in north carolina. and trump in florida. now, this is only the first of three presidential debates.

the next will happen on october 9th in st. louis, missouri. as for the vice presidential debate, that happens one week from today. and, anne-marie, our own elaine quijano will moderate that debate. >> very exciting news. thanks a lot. jamie yuccas at hofstra university in hamstead. following what many believe to be a string of inflammatory comments was enough to dissuade voters that he has the temperament to be president. >> why is your judgment any different than mrs. clinton's? >> well, i have much better judgment than she does. there's no question about that. i also have a much better temperament than she has, you know? i have a much better -- she spent -- let me tell you, she spent hundreds of millions of dollars on an advertising -- you know. they get madison avenue in a room and they, oh, temperament. let's go after that. i think my strongest asset maybe by far is my temperament. i have a winning temperament.

i know how to win. she does not -- >> secretary clinton -- >> wait. the afl-cio, the other day, behind the blue screen, i don't know who you were talking to, secretary clinton, but you was totally out of control. i said there's a person with a temperament that's got a problem. >> secretary clinton. >> whew. okay! >> clinton said anyone who can be provoked as easily as she said as trump can, should not be allowed to control america's nuclear arsenal. cbs news' contributor bob schieffer has moderated three debates and reported on all the others, schieffer said last night's face-off was nothing like he's ever seen. >> i've never seen one where the decorum broke down the way it did tonight. you just never see audience responses like you saw tonight. we were expecting a different kind of debate, and i think in that way, we saw one. i don't think donald trump lost any votes tonight.

i'm not sure hillary clinton gained any votes tonight. what we saw was an example of just how deep the divide is now between democrats and republicans. i didn't learn very much new tonight. i mean, i thought they started off pretty well. it was fairly business-like. about 15 minutes in, it just broke down into name calling. it was back and forth and who could shout the loudest. i must say i thought mrs. clinton maintained her composure throughout. i thought she zinged him a couple of pretty good times on the income tax. when she brought home this point, what is it that he has to hide here. now, his supporters in the hall seem to think that was a great moment for him. but i think that's what we saw tonight. she was preaching to her choir over here. he was preaching to his choir over here. we never saw any indication of

how you cometogether and form the coalitions to break the gridlock that this country finds itself in. well, coming up on "cbs this morning," we will take a look at what was fact and what was fiction during last night's high stakes presidential debate. the suspect accused of killing five people at a mall north of seattle confessed to police. arcan cetin is being held on $2 million bail. he has a criminal record going back two years. and one neighbor said he scared her so much, she kept a stun gun by the front door. mireya villarreal has the report. >> reporter: arcan cetin. entered a packed courtroom filled with grieving family members. >> you understand the charges? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: cetin charged on five counts of premeditated murder has still given no motive into friday night's attack. cetin is a naturalized u.s. citizen from turkey.

and has expressed an interest in guns and social media. his stepfather spoke after the hearing. >> arcan has had mental health issues that we have been trying to work on with him. that's all i can say. >> reporter: just before 7:00 on friday night, 911 calls poured in from mall customers. they described a man walking into macy's with a gun. court documents describe cetin's alleged attack. the suspect initially shot a juvenile victim near some clothing racks he moved near the makeup counter where he shot the adult male victim. then shot three other adult female victims. the victims included a sarai lotte, a 16-year-old cancer survivor. chuck egan, a maintenance worker at boeing. belinda galde, a probations officer, and her 95-year-old mother beatrice dotson. mireya villarreal, cbs news, washington. police say a gunman who opened fire in an affluent neighborhood had two weapons and thousands of rounds of

ammunition. officials say nathan desai as a disgruntled lawyer but still have no motive. police say desai who was wearing a nazi you'll started screaming monday morning before being shot by police. officials say they don't believe the shooting is tied to terrorism. this morning, firefighters are battling a fast moving fire in northern california. the loma fire has burned about 1,000 acres in santa clara county. one building has been destroyed. but the fire has forced the evacuation of 300 homes in santa cruz mountains. the fire is also threatening television and radio towers. it is being fed by high temperatures and strong winds. it started yesterday afternoon in a building and spread to nearby vegetation. last night, the miami marlins played their first game since the death of their ace pitcher jose fernandez. fernandez was killed sunday in a boating accident.

♪ the pregame ceremony included a slow trumpet rendition of "take me out to the ball game." the entire team wore fernandez's number 16. the marlins' first batter second baseman dee gordon who normally bats lefty, stepped to the plate as a righty, wearing the helmet with hernandez's number 16. after one pitch, he hit one out of the park. >> he cracks one to deep right field. that goes loose and the track looks up. that ball is out of the here into the second deck. the first home run of the season for dee gordon. >> gordon sobbed as he circled the bases. the marlins beat the mets 7-3. and after the game, gathered around the pitcher's mound leaving their hats.

charges against a city officer. he's accused of fatally shooting a man. video shows the officer fires one second after the man charged towards his car. cbssports.com reports that lebron james' view on the national anthem protest by athletes. he said he'll star but james said he supports colin kaepernick's demonstration against racial bias. the los angeles times reports that police are reporting a sex assault against derrick ross. the report claims rose and two other men raped her while intoxicated. the men admit it happened but she consented. the national park service says it's unreliable and needs to be modernized. that's expected to take months.
