i'm kenny choi. >> and i'm michelle griego. the loma fire is burning in the loma prieta area south of san jose. anne makovec has the latest. anne? >> reporter: the firefighters are driving up the steep and windey roads into the hillside to try and stop the fire from spreading. this is what the loma fire looked like after the sun rose. it had spread to 1100 acres since it started at 2:00 yesterday afternoon and for 300 properties along the loma prieta ridge, the evacuations went from voluntary to mandatoryy. >> they came in the driveway with the sirens and loud horn and said evacuate immediately. >> reporter: but jim didn't. he packed a trailer and is up on the ridge above his home.

>> if we see flames get closer, we'll head out. otherwise, i'm staying here. >> reporter: firefighters said it's tough to know where the fire is heading, moving north and south between highway 101 and highway 17. it's been driven by dry fuel instead of wind. >> as it works and finds a valley or a gully or drainage primed with fuel, it will go. >> reporter: that makes it unpredictable. >> i'm hoping that the fire people know who they're doing. i'm putting my trust in them but i think we're all right. >> reporter: at least one building has burned. and i spoke with a woman who believes that that building was her home. she said she saw the flames coming very close to it as she was leaving yesterday. she obviously didn't want to speak on camera, very distraught. at this point, one building burned and firefighters will hopefully get a better handle on this today but the

temperatures are extremely hot here in the south bay, approaching 100 degrees. live in gilroy, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> here is a look at the three evacuation centers opened by the american red cross, the screwish community center in los gatos, morgan hill presbyterian church in morgan hill and soquel high school in soquell. care for small animals will be available. and public schools in the area are open as scheduled. a traffic mess for hour along the richmond-san rafael bridge and still, things are going slowly after a big rig crashed into a guardrail and caught fire. kpix 5's jackie ward reports from the richmond toll plaza. cracky? >> reporter: kenny, it's strange to see 580 eastbound completely empty and it's been this way for hours. it will stay this way until

1:30 this afternoon. at 10:15, chp temporarily opened 1 lane on the bridge to allow the cars that were stuck there for 2 hours to finally get off. but this is the reason that the cars were stuck there. this is video from chopper 5. it shows that a big rig has crashed into the bridge's guardrail. no other vehicles were directly involved. but mondays of cars were affected. you could see huge clouds of smoke from miles away. at one point, traffic was backed up to san quentin, and 580 in richmond was a mess, too. eastbound traffic had to be stopped and the cars heading towards richmond that hadn't made it on the bridge were diverted to main street. this big rig was carrying 24 tons of contaminated soil, a difficult and lengthy clean up process. fortunately, no one, not even the driver was injured.

chpand the fire department are on the scene and caltrans are also here and are going to eventually remove the big rig from the bridge. jackie ward, kpix 5. >> jackie, thank you. back to the fire watch coverage in sonoma county. firefighters are battling the sawmill fire that began over the weekend. it has burned 1500 acres east of cloverdale. the fire is 55% contained and no reports of structures damaged. all evacuation orders and road closures lifted yesterday evening. and city officials will decide whether to re-open a local park later this afternoon, alum park. julie? high pressure is holding steady because of a warm, dry air mass, not great news for the firefighters. 90 and dry up north but here's a look at the loma fire where

>> reporter: the next debate is schedules for october 9. last night, both clinton and trump weighed in on the national stop and frisk policy. as kpix 5's political analyst melissa caen shows us, kamala harris is chiming in. >> reporter: the candidates were asked now to mend race relations. trump answered that minorities need law and order in their community which he called hell and clint open said one way to reduce crime, stop and frisk -- >> whether or not you do stop and frisker, it worked very well here. it brought the crime rate way down. >> stop and frisker was found to be constitutional in part because it was ineffective. it did not do what it needed to

do. i believe in community policing and, in fact, violent crime is 1 half of what it was in 1991. property crime is down 40%. we just don't want to see it creep back up. we've had 25 years of very good cooperation. >> reporter: in new york, stop and frisk was ruled unconstitutional in part because a judge found that the nypd engaged in racial profiling, and that's one reason california's attorney general, kamala harris condemned it last night tweeting there is no easy answer to criminal justice reform but i can tell that you stop and frisk not the solution. harris who is currently running for senate also began a petition on her campaign website. its that we should reject trump's shallow stop and frisk proposal. the site did not show how many people have signed. >> the vice presidential debate

>> the firefighter was a battalion chief who served with the fire department for 17 years and was the father of three. a backpack has reportedly washed ashore in florida containing baseballs autographed by jose fernandez. he and two friends were killed over the weekend when a boat slammed into the jetty in miami. yesterday, his team paid an emotional tribute to fernandez. he had escaped from cuba and was known for his constant smile. anxiety in eastern iowa. people living in cedar rapids are hoping that a temporary flood wall protecting thousands of homes and buildings will hold as the rain-swollen cedar river crests. they have been building walls and sandbagging in anticipation of days of heavy rain. >> i trust in the wall but still, you have to be prepared.
