with the latest on the firefight. >> reporter: this fire now stands at nearly 4,000 acres, 22% contained. behind me a much different story than yesterday when there was a lot of smoke. now it's everywhere and that's because of the wind. firefighters slowed down the spread of the "loma fire" but now there's a new concern up ahead. >> we do have some concerns tomorrow with possible forecast to 30- to 40-mile-per-hour winds at the ridgetops. >> reporter: the cooler weather is bringing winds that could shift the "loma fire." a team behind the scenes is hard at work. >> i'm the incident meteorologist. >> reporter: bob is the "loma fire"'s only meteorologist. he works 24/7. >> we basically predict the weather for that incident specifically. >> reporter: bob then gives that information to this man. >> i'm the fire behavior

analyst. >> reporter: he predicts what the fire wants to do based on the weather, fuel -- and fire history of the area. their main goal help firefighters fight the fire while keeping them safe. >> we are giving them as much information as we can. >> reporter: because of the predictions, right now firefighters are trying to get ahead of the fire before the winds arrive to stop it from spreading and destroying everything in its path. >> we want to get in today and do as much work as we can. >> reporter: so far this fire destroyed one home and six outbuildings. they hope to control it by monday but it all depends on the wind. cal fire plans to hold a meeting this evening at 7 p.m. with evacuees at loma prieta school to give them an update.

here's roberta with the weather conditions. >> today's the perfect day to plan for the onslaught of the very windy conditions to come within the next 24 hours. the weather conditions in the "loma fire" area in the santa cruz mountains in the county of santa clara, air temperatures between 70 and 79. the winds are light out of the west to about 10 miles per hour. you can see that by the arrows or the stream, wind particle map, wind drifting in off the ocean. that's an onshore push. we anticipate winds to pick up to 40 miles per hour tomorrow. right now, locally up to 15 in san francisco. 20 at sfo. winds have been increasing in san ramon and look at the wind speeds right now in the fairfield area out of the southwest at 23. we do have an improving situation at sfo where we had delays up to an hour 30 due to the bank of low clouds and fog. temperatures have cooled significantly compared to just yesterday and we'll talk about the additional cooling effect and the winds and how it's all

going to affect the weekend coming up. a train packed with commuters barreled into a busy station in hoboken, new jersey, this morning. there's one confirmed death and dozens injured. jamie yuccas has the latest. >> reporter: witnesses say the commuter train slammed through a barrier into a wall at full force inside the rail station in hoboken, new jersey. michael larson a transit employee was inside the terminal about 30 feet away from the crash. >> i observed it coming at a high rate of speed. it went over the bumper block through the air, traveled about another 40 feet came to a rest. >> reporter: people were standing on the platform waiting to commute into new york city. >> there were folks hobbling around, people holding their limbs, holding their backs and things like that. there were definitely some bad injuries. >> reporter: officials say the station's roof partially collapsed on the train and debris littered the reception area. >> blood kind of like around their faces, um, people were, like, you know, kind of

holding on to each other. >> reporter: rescue crews climbed through train cars to reach trapped passengers. the injured passengers were taken to a parking lot that turned into a triage area. federal investigators will try to figure out what happened here. they will look at various factors including the condition of the tracks and the speed of the train. >> so we're not going to speculate about the cause of the accident. fact is that we're in the middle of an investigation. >> reporter: new jersey transit service has been suspended at the hoboken station indefinitely. jamie yuccas, cbs news, hoboken, new jersey. >> the nj transit and path trains are set to have technology installed that could have prevented this crash. but that's not scheduled until 2018. new at noon, the man accused in a bizarre kidnapping for ransom case in vallejo changed his plea to guilty hoping to get a lighter sentence. under the plea terms, matthew muller can avoid the maximum sentence of life in prison and the government will recommend

he be sentenced to no more than 40 years. the story got national attention as many likened it to the plot of the movie "gone girl." vallejo police initially accused the victim of making up the story. the department now faces a lawsuit. the victim's attorney is holding a press conference this afternoon in san francisco. stay with kpix 5 for the latest development. we're now learning the unarmed black man fatally shot by police in san diego was ordered to be deported twice. but his native uganda refused to take him. alfred olango was a refugee in 1991 and was later ordered to be deported in two separate convictions. one for drug charges, the other for firearms. authorities told the "associated press" today olango stopped reporting to immigration officers in february 2015. he was shot to death earlier this week in el cajon after police say he pointed an object at an officer. it turned out to be a vap smoking device. we are learning new details about the events leading up to

the south carolina school shooting that injured two students and a teacher. police say the alleged shooter a 14-year-old killed his father at home and then called his grandparents who said that he was emotional before he headed to the school and fired shots on the playground. frantic parents were alerted by text to come to the school as soon as students were evacuated. >> i saw her come out and i just ran to her, crying. just gave her a big hug. you know? just thankful. >> one of the students is in critical condition. the other student and teacher who were injured have been released from the hospital. investigators say that there's no link between the suspected shooter and the victims at the school. the gunman is in police custody. to the campaign trail. with just 40 days left before election day, the presidential candidates are focusing on battleground states. hillary clinton is in iowa, donald trump in new hampshire. craig boswell has the latest

[chuckling] >> so it's very big challenge to survive with little or no income. >> reporter: last year, high levels of domoic acid were detected in the crabs so they posed a significant risk to the public if consumed. but the california department of public health started testing dungeness crab a few weeks earlier than usual this year and so far results are normal for this time of the year which is is great news for fishermen like mellor. >> everything is looking really good in the ocean so i imagine stuff is going to bounce back big and, you know, just got to hang on to, you know, where we can start crab fishing again. >> reporter: the owner of alioto fish company buys crab and fish from fishermen like mellor and sells them to many restaurants at fisherman's wharf. she was extremely pleased with these latest test results. >> very optimistic. very hopeful. getting excited. starting to get the inventory where it should be in terms of

packaging and, um, bags and, you know, just getting ready for the season. >> reporter: the dungeness crab season is supposed to start november 5 for recreational fishermen and november 15th for commercial just in time for people to get crab for the holidays. the department of public health will continue to test crab once a week and it will have a better idea if there's a chance that crab season will be delayed by the end of october. at fisherman's wharf, lisa chan, kpix 5. an extensive and expansive deck of low clouds and fog pretty compressed to about 1500 feet pushed onshore, repeat performance again tonight. but overall, sunny and cooler today. dry front blows through tomorrow. you will notice increasing winds but no precipitation. we'll have light rain in the vicinity on sunday due to this, upper level area of low pressure very unusual for this time of the year projected to take a nosedive into the bay area changing up our weekend forecast like this. watch our futurecast. look at the rain showers offshore for the most part nicking the north bay where we do anticipate about two-tenths of an inch of rain and just anything south of the golden gate bridge, a few sprinkles. could see about a tenths of an inch of rain though towards mill valley. 67 in the high sierra due to the front. we have a fire weather watch in effect for friday. and we have a red flag warning in effect for the reno area. today temperatures in the 60s and 70s down to the 80s. 81 today in livermore down from
